2010 South Dakota State Women’s Soccer The seniors reflect on the “Jackrabbit Family.” “There is such a great mix of personalities within our 2010 senior class. This group has been tremendous on the field, excellent in the classroom and wonderful representatives of all the great things South Dakota State symbolizes. It has been a great honor and privilege to coach and mentor this senior class and I am excited to see them accomplish even greater feats this season.” -Lang Wedemeyer, head coach
Top row from left: Emily Quigley, Tory Schiltgen, JoLynn Janckila, Kaitlin Justice. Bottom row from left: Danni Healy, Dani Pappas, Elizabeth Nagelhout
“Playing for SDSU has been a great soccer experience, but the memories from off the field are the ones that mean the most to me. My teammates have been my family away from home and have made my college experience one that I will remember forever.” -Emily Quigley
“Being a Jackrabbit has affected me in many great ways. As a Jackrabbit, I have developed a strong character and a competitive spirit. I’ve had the opportunity to be a part of a great program and experience the ups and downs of being a student-athlete. I’ve also had the chance to travel to new places. Most importantly, I’ve become a member of an elite group that’s become my second family!” -Danni Healy
“Being a Jackrabbit is being part of a family. Not only my immediate teammates, but the athletic department and community as a whole are so supportive of one another. I couldn’t have asked for a better college experience than coming to play at SDSU. I will cherish the people I’ve met and the memories I’ve made here forever.” -Kaitlin Justice 2

2010 South Dakota State Women’s Soccer The seniors reflect on the “Jackrabbit Family.” “Being a Jackrabbit at South Dakota State means taking pride in myself and the University that has given me the opportunity to be a student-athlete. Athletics are consistently used as a great metaphor for life’s more difficult lessons. It is through my experience as a Jackrabbit student-athlete that I have come to understand fears can be overcome, obstacles can be conquered and the ability to do great things lies within. That is not to say that our team’s love for each other and the Jackrabbit community does not go unnoticed. We are nothing without those who support us and, as a Jackrabbit, I know there are fans constantly rallying behind us and pushing us to achieve goals. To my family, teammates, coaches, friends, professors, other Jacks, the Athletic department and other math majors a million ‘thank yous’ cannot even begin to express my gratitude for the positive impact you have had in my life. I am so proud to be a Jackrabbit! GO BIG, GO BLUE, GO JACKS!” -Tory Schiltgen
“What it means to be a Jackrabbit....It’s simple: FAMILY. The soccer team is all about the family aspect. We support each other on and off the field, enjoy each other’s company and love to have a fun time with many laughs. A student-athlete has another family away from home in the team. “ -Dani Pappas
“Playing for SDSU has been a great learning experience. I have learned to persevere through challenges, set high goals for myself, and to love the team around me. I will cherish the memories I have with this team forever.” -Elizabeth Nagelhout
“To be a Jackrabbit means to be part of a team that relies on each other to achieve success. We pick each other up through the rough patches and celebrate together through the triumphs. The team has become my family over the past four years. It was our love of the game that brought us together from different walks of life but it’s the bonds we created with one another that will keep us together no matter where life takes us.” -Jo Janckila 2010 South Dakota State Women’s Soccer Media Guide

Vision, Mission and Values South Dakota State Athletic Department
Every undertaking of South Dakota State University is driven by a common force — a relentless commitment to excellence. Within the Athletic Department, excellence is measured by much more than wins and losses. We are committed to providing each and every student-athlete with a comprehensive collegiate experience that is second to none. Every decision that guides our program is made with the student-athlete in mind. Is athletic achievement important? Yes, because it is the fundamental purpose of the student-athlete experience. Is social responsibility a vital component? Yes, we expect to contribute to the well-being of our campus, community and state. How about positive student-athlete experiences and competitive success? Those also define our program because they are integral to the student-athlete’s growth. That is what it means to be student-centered, and why our vision is:
VISION: To be a premier student-centered collegiate athletic program. How will SDSU athletics achieve that vision? By working tirelessly to create a special place where studentathletes who share our drive and determination can develop life skills that lead not only to athletic success, but pave the way for victories long into their lives. The important work of creating that setting is the heart of our mission:
MISSION: To passionately and relentlessly create an environment, rooted in sportsmanship and ethical conduct, where motivated student-athletes can develop into lifelong champions. To be a lifelong champion, one must maintain a discipline of taking the highest road. Similarly, SDSU is guided by a stringent value set that will not be compromised:
VALUES: Honesty, equity, academic integrity, fiscal integrity and social responsibility with the expectation of competing at the highest level.

2010 South Dakota State Women’s Soccer Season Preview After winning their second-straight regular season Summit League co-championship during the 2009 season and earning runner-up in the conference tournament, the Jackrabbits look to build on their success and make their second appearance of the Division I era in the NCAA College Cup. “The 2009 season was one of ups and downs, but winning a second regular season championship was great for our team. However, ending with a loss on our home field is something we really want to rectify this fall,” said head coach Lang Wedemeyer. To begin the season, the Jacks suffered a 0-3-1 record before tallying the first win of the season against WisconsinGreen Bay. The Jackrabbits finished the regular season with a share of the Summit League title and a No. 1 seed for the conference tournament. At the conference tournament, the Jacks defeated Western Illinois 1-0 in double overtime before falling to IUPUI 4-1 in the championship game, ending the season. The Jacks finished with an 11-7-2 overall record and 7-2 in the Summit League. The 2010 season looks to be a promising one as the Jackrabbits return all but one of the 2009 squad, including 10 of the 11 starters, and add eight new faces to the team. The Jacks lost all-conference and Summit League all-tournament performer Jessica Heine to graduation, but add seven freshmen and one junior college transfer. “Jess was a great representative of our program on and off the field, but we are super excited for this incoming group of players,” Wedemeyer said. “The team will have a great mix of mature returners and enthusiastic incoming freshmen.”
Outlook
the NCAA College Cup.
Forwards
The Jacks will be strong at the forward position with eight returning players to choose from including three starters in Kayla Braffet, Kelsey Ferguson and Danni Healy. Junior Braffet played in all 20 games in 2009 and scored six goals and eight assists for 20 points, the highest on the team. For her efforts, she was honored as an all-conference second-team selection. Senior Healy earned 12 points on five goals and two assists last season, while junior Ferguson tallied one goal and one assist. Sophomore Courtney Higgins was a solid spark off the bench for the Jacks. Higgins played in all 20 games and tallied 11 points on four goals and three assists in her freshman season. Higgins was honored with the Summit League Athlete of the Week Oct. 26 after tallying two goals and two assists in two games. She was also an all-conference all-newcomer team selection as voted on by Summit League coaches. Sophomores Christa Nyblom and Brittany Sipp combined to score 10 points on three goals and four assists while playing in every game last season. Also returning for the Jacks are junior Elizabeth Nagelhout and sophomore Aimee Fielder. Newcomers to the position are Chelsey Poole and Kara McCaughey. Wedemeyer describes Poole as a soccer-savvy athlete with speed and the ability to tear apart defenses, while McCaughey is a versatile, attack-minded player. The Jacks are strong at the forward position. Look for the Jacks to score plenty of goals with an attack-minded style of play.
In 2010, the Jacks return plenty of power and Midfielders athletic ability after only losing one starter from the 2009 The Jackrabbits return 10 at the midfield position, including three squad. 2010 South Dakota State Women’s Soccer Season Preview freshman season and owns a .571 shot on goal percentage for her career. Sophomore Kourtney Frank also returns after a successful freshman season with two goals scored for the Jacks and one assist with a .556 shot on goal percentage. Junior Cori Bonte played 11 games for the Jacks and started 10 until she broke her leg against IPFW Oct. 11. Others fighting for the spot are Dani Neuhalfen and Hannah Phillips. Newcomers to the position are Caylee Costello, Darci Miller, Kara McCaughey and Abby Jurgens. A strong incoming freshman class and the returning experience should give the Jacks plenty of versatility and power at the midfield position. “We will be incredibly deep in the midfield and that gives us loads of options to alter our shape and utilize our many different talents tactically,” Wedemeyer said.
Defenders
The Jackrabbits lost all-Summit League Second Team performer Jess Heine to graduation but return seven other defenders, including three starters. Juniors Steph Peterson and Kelli Herman will look to fill the leadership role for the Jacks as returning starters. Peterson played in all but one game last season and tallied two assists from her position, while Herman played in all 20 games, starting 19 of them. Sophomore Stéphanie Bérubé is an up and coming talent for the Jacks as she started in all 20 games her freshman season and was part of a defense that allowed only eight goals in Summit League action. She was named to the all-Summit League Second Team and all-Summit League Newcomer Team. Other Jacks looking to fill the defender position are Megan Huegli, JoLynn Janckila and newcomers Hanna Kiebel and Darci Miller. “We played a variety of players on defense through the spring season and increased our depth on the back line,” Wedemeyer said. “Our new players will add to that and it should create a very tough defensive core.”
her final season with the Jacks. Pappas totaled 843 minutes in 10 games last season with a 5-3-1 record. She allowed only nine goals with 38 saves. Also fighting for time in the net are junior transfer Kat Donovan and freshman Elisa Stamatakis. Donovan joins the Jacks after two years at Shoreline Community College where she led the Dolphins in shutouts in 2008 with 11, while allowing only 10 goals. Last season, she recorded three shutouts and was an all-conference performer earning NWACC All-Star accolades both years. Stamatakis was a three-year starter at Ross Sheppard Senior High. She participated on the Victoria Major Senior Women’s team, which won the Gold medal at the national championship in 2009. “It will be a great group of goalkeepers that all have different talents to help us be successful on the field and keep clean sheets,” said Wedemeyer.
Schedule
The 20-game schedule for the 2010 season includes two NCAA College Cup qualifiers from a year ago in Wisconsin, which advanced to the third round, and IUPUI. The nonconference portion of the schedule features three Missouri Valley schools (Creighton, Drake and Northern Iowa), one from the Horizon League (Wisconsin-Green Bay), one from the Big 12 (Iowa State), two Great West schools (South Dakota and North Dakota), two Big Sky schools (Montana and Eastern Washington), one from the Western Athletic Conference (Nevada) and one from the Big 10 (Wisconsin). The Jackrabbits will play nine Summit League conference games during the 2010 season. “The 2010 schedule is full of great challenges for the SDSU Soccer program,” said Wedemeyer. “We have a tremendous non-conference schedule with some of the best teams in our region including Wisconsin, who made it to the third round of the NCAA College Cup last year. The Summit League is always very tough, but hosting the tournament once again is great motivation for our team. It should be another exciting year for Jackrabbit soccer.” By virtue of winning the 2009 Summit League regular season title and earning Goalkeepers the No. 1 seed in the conference Looking to keep her starting goalkeeper tournament, the Jacks opted to once position is junior Brie Rogers who played Kelli Herman started in the defender position in all but one game last again host the Summit League Women’s 1,317 minutes in 12 games last season season and looks to hold on to her starting postion. Excellence Starts Here
When starting a new program, many schools will allow for a grace period before evaluating the success of that program. South Dakota State University did not have to wait long before it was able to start compiling a list of accomplishments that its lone women’s soccer coach, Lang Wedemeyer, has amassed in his 10-year tenure at South Dakota State University. Wedemeyer built the Division II soccer program from the ground up and has led the Jackrabbits through a transition to Division I and a trip to the NCAA College Cup, which included the first NCAA postseason victory for SDSU in the Division I era and the first time a Summit League team won a game at the College Cup.
From The Ground Up
Ten years ago, Wedemeyer started at SDSU with the task of building an NCAA Division II women’s soccer program. His first roster of 19 included just six women who had any collegiate experience, six freshmen, and a mix of seven others, including four that had played club soccer at SDSU in 1999. The roster was put together in just six months before the inexperienced Jackrabbit team took to the field for its inaugural season. In 2000, SDSU posted a 5-12-0 record, including a 1-8 record in the North Central Conference.
Youth Lead SDSU to Postseason Berth
The following season the Jacks welcomed a freshman class of 14 to its roster. Although the team was young in age, they were able to post the the first winning season in SDSU history as Wedemeyer marched his second-year program into the North Central Conference’s four-team postseason tournament with a 13-6-1 record. For his efforts, Wedemeyer was named the North Central Conference Coach of the Year following his 2001 campaign. After finishing the 2002 season with a 10-8-0 record, SDSU missed the postseason, struggling with a 2-6-0 record through the conference portion of its schedule. In 2003, the Jacks rebounded with their third consecutive winning season. After posting an 8-5-6 overall record and a 2-2-3 record in NCC action, the Jacks were back in the postseason for the second time in three years. Behind the net-minding skills of senior Erin Miller, Wedemeyer’s team posted the fifth-lowest goals-against average in Division II. Miller later became the first player in SDSU history to be named North Central Conference Player of the Year. She was also the first Jackrabbit soccer player to be named an All-American, earning second team honors.

After leading the four-year-old program to a 36-31-7 record, South Dakota State decided to take its athletic department to the Division I level, leaving Wedemeyer with the task of recruiting players into a program that was not eligible for the NCAA postseason and was without a conference affiliate. Wedemeyer accepted the challenge even though it came with its low points. The program returned to where it was just three years earlier, posting a 5-11-1 record during its first season at the Division I level. Although the wins were not rolling in as quickly anymore, SDSU was making solid strides. The program faced 10 new opponents during the 2004 season and saw 11 Division I opponents. Five games into the season, the Jacks earned their first Division I win with a victory over Western Illinois, 2-0, at the Diadora Classic in Omaha, Neb., on Sept. 12. In 2005, the team recorded another five-win season, posting a 5-12-1 record in its second year of Division I play. The Jacks recorded Division I victories over Northern Iowa, Montana and Murray State, while also holding

Head Coach Lang Wedemeyer Old Dominion ‘94 • eleventh season at South Dakota State • 89-79-19 overall record Big 10 member Minnesota scoreless on Sept. 11. In 2008, Wedemeyer led the Jacks to a 15-5-1 record in their first year of eligibility for Division I postseason play. After winning the Summit League’s regular season title with a 7-1 record, the Jacks went on to win the conference tournament, earning them a trip to the NCAA College Cup. Wedemeyer’s 14th-seeded team beat the nationally ranked Colorado 1-0 in the first round of the Cup. It marked the first NCAA postseason victory for SDSU and was the first time a team from the Summit League won a game at the College Cup. The win garnered national attention in the soccer world and created a buzz throughout SDSU and the state. Wedemeyer was selected as the Soccerbuzz.com runner-up coach of the year and the South Dakota Sports Writers Women’s College Coach of the Year. That season he coached six Summit League all-conference selections, two all-newcomer team selections, the Summit League’s Defensive Player of the Year and an Academic All-American along with numerous other athletic and academic honors.
Wedemeyer Leads Jacks to First Title
South Dakota State joined the United Soccer Conference for its 2006 campaign. After starting the season with wins over Northern Iowa and Northern Illinois, the Jacks were holding their heads high with a 3-1-1 record through five games. However, SDSU struggled through the middle portion of its schedule. The Jacks went 0-7-1 in their next eight games, scoring just one goal during that stretch. Four of those losses were by scores of 1-0 but the Jacks knew the season was not over yet. Over the course of the final seven games of the season the Jacks posted a 5-1-1 record, which included a 2-01 record in the United Soccer Conference tournament to claim the USC championship. During SDSU’s three tournament games, goalkeepers Nicole Lograsso and Jenn Davis combined for three straight shutouts. The conference tournament title was the first for SDSU at any level and especially a nice reward for Wedemeyer after starting a program from scratch and leading it to a Division I conference title.
A New Home For SDSU Athletics, Soccer
The 2007 season marked the first year for SDSU as a member of The Summit League. In 2008, the Jacks become a full Division I member and eligible for NCAA postseason competition.

Prior to SDSU
Wedemeyer joined the SDSU staff in 2000 as the first coach in women’s soccer history. Before taking his current post, Wedemeyer was the director of coaching and women’s coordinator for the Roanoke Valley Youth Soccer Club. His three-year tenure as the club’s assistant executive director included overseeing all 28 teams and their coaches. One of the youngest coaches in the United States to obtain all levels of coaching certification, Wedemeyer holds nine professional soccer coaching licenses, including a United State Soccer Federation “A” license and the NSCAA Premier diploma. While working on his master’s degree at Old Dominion, Wedemeyer served as an assistant coach for the men’s soccer program.
Playing Career
Wedemeyer began his collegiate playing career at Virginia Tech University, where he was voted the ‘Hokies best defensive player two years in a row. He later transferred to Old Dominion University (Va.), where he captained the team and earned second-team academic All-America honors in 1994. Wedemeyer also has extensive professional playing experience in the United Soccer Leagues. He played three years for his hometown Roanoke Wrath before playing with the Sioux Falls Spitfire at the beginning of the team’s first season in 2001.
Outside of South Dakota State
In addition to starting the women’s soccer program at SDSU, Wedemeyer has also been involved in other aspects of the South Dakota and national soccer community.

South Dakota State University You Can Go Anywhere From Here With a record enrollment of 12,376 students in the fall of 2009, South Dakota State remains the state’s largest institution of higher learning.
SDSU Early History
Located in Brookings, the Territorial Legislative Assembly authorized SDSU in 1881 to serve as the state’s land grant institution. Territorial Council member John O’Brien Scobey managed to secure Dakota Agricultural College for his city. Although allocations fell short of the actual cost, the school did open in the fall of 1884 because the president, George Lilley, advanced $500 — one-third of his salary — to finish three rooms in the new Central Building. “Old Central” was soon joined by South (1885) and North (1887), forming the nucleus of campus for a decade and a half. During the first year of operation, the college only held preparatory classes. College classes started in 1885 with five teachers, 17 freshman and 61 preparatory students. Growth stayed slow and erratic for many years, but by the turn of the 20th century, 242 students enrolled and by 1990, SDSU enrollment grew to more than 9,000 students.
Colleges Established
SDSU granted nearly 70,000 degrees since its charter in 1881. The structure of the college became more complex as enrollments increased. The first nine chairs of instruction established in 1884 included agriculture, science, mathematics, English, modern languages, military tactics, veterinary science, practical business, political & domestic economy and music. By 1907, the year the name of the institution changed to South Dakota State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, there were 22 departments on campus. Reorganization into the five divisions that formed the basis for the designation of colleges was completed under President Charles W. Pugsley in 1923. In 1964, when “State College” became South Dakota State University, the school included six colleges. Now, students can earn degrees offered through eight colleges. Students can choose from more than 200 majors, minors and options at SDSU with more than 2,500 different course offerings. Master’s degrees can be earned in more than 30 areas, with doctorates available in eight fields. SDSU also offers degree programs through the South Dakota Public Universities and Research Center in Sioux Falls. The Office of Academic Affairs and Outreach coordinates evening, RDTN, Internet and off-campus courses. The North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools accredits SDSU, while numerous departments on campus hold accreditation from various other agencies. SDSU celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2006, a yearlong event that culminated with the 2006 Hobo Day football game. Over those 125 years, SDSU grew from a campus of 80 acres in 1881 to a 271-acre campus with facilities worth more than $220 million. The university owns or leases another 15,000 acres for research throughout the state. The Printing and Journalism Building — now named

Anson and Ada May Yeager Hall — underwent a $2.1 million expansion and renovation project. Other recent campus construction projects include a $7 million expansion to Crothers Engineering Hall, the renovation of Solberg Hall and the building of a $9 million performing arts center, which opened in the fall of 2002. A new residence hall (Caldwell Hall) and the University Student Union expansion and renovation opened in the fall of 2005, and the Enterprise Institute, located on the southwest corner of campus opened in 2004. In 2005, SDSU spent more than $3 million to install new state of the art scoreboards in Frost Arena and at Coughlin Alumni Stadium.
Agricultural Research
The university reaches all corners of the state through the Cooperative Extension Service and the Agricultural Experiment Station, offering service to improve the quality of rural life. SDSU also sponsors the Center for Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship; Engineering Experiment Station, Office of Remote Sensing; Water Resources Institute; Engineering and Environmental Research Center; Animal Disease Research and Diagnostic Laboratory; and Northern Grain Insect Research Laboratory. These
South Dakota State University You Can Go Anywhere From Here units help strengthen the university’s growing commitment to research and support of state and local economic development efforts. The Northern Great Plains Biostress Laboratory, dedicated in 1993, houses scientists who focus on research aimed at developing new technologies to protect crops and livestock. SDSU is also one of just five universities to serve as a regional center for the Sun Grant Initiative, which is a concept to solve America’s energy needs and revitalize rural communities with Land-Grant university research, education and Extension programs on renewable energy and bio-based non-food industries. The Harding Distinguished Lecture Series, the F.O. Butler Lectures, the Lusk Lecture and the Amdahl, Schultz-Werth and Griffiths endowments all supplement classroom instruction. Students can also choose from more than 100 clubs and organizations on campus.
Museums & Attractions
The educational opportunities do not end in the classroom or laboratory, as South Dakota State University houses several facilities, including museums and gardens. Dedicated in 1970, and expanded in 2000, the South Dakota Federation of Women’s Club first envisioned the South Dakota Art Museum in 1949. The museum’s collections include early Sioux Indian tribal art, the famed Harvey Dunn paintings of pioneer life and the exclusive Vera Way Marghab linens. The State Agricultural Heritage Museum transformed the former Stock Judging Pavilion into a home for exhibits that record and preserve the agrarian heritage of South Dakota. The 70-acre McCrory Gardens and South Dakota Arboretum, located south and east of campus, provide a beautiful setting for area residents and tourists to enjoy a stroll through the radiant colors and fragrances of one of the top 10 small ornamental gardens in the nation. It is also recognized as an All-American Display Garden, one of only 13 in the nation. In
SDSU Horticulture, Forestry, Landscape and Parks Department manage the arboretum and gardens. McCrory Gardens continues to develop more gardens, tree and shrub collections.
The Coughlin Campanile
RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES—SDSU has the highest involvement of undergraduates in research of any South Dakota public university. The university is large enough to offer the opportunities, yet small enough to foster student-faculty learning opportunities.
1993 McCrory Gardens was designated an AllAmerican Judging Garden to conduct research on annual flowers. Since 1985, private contributions made many new gardens possible including the Rose, Rock, Centennial Prairie, Iris, True Lily, Mum, Native Prairie Collection, Oak Tree Memorial Garden, All-Red Specialty Garden, Peony Garden, Shrub Rose Collection, and Children’s Maze. In August 1994, McCrory Gardens dedicated the Mickelson Grove Memorial in honor of former governor and Brookings resident George S. Mickelson. In 1982, they dedicated the area north of the formal garden to the planting and testing of ornamental trees and shrubs. The 45-acre site was designated the South Dakota State Arboretum in 1988. The arboretum’s purpose is to test woody plants needed to protect agricultural fields and livestock from the region’s harsh environment, to provide hardy trees to shade our towns and cities, and to test ornamental shrubs for both durability and beauty.
COOLIDGE-SYLVAN THEATRE—The Sylvan Theatre, located on the southwest corner of campus, is an outdoor amphitheater that has been the site of concerts, graduations and inaugurations of university presidents since its dedication by President Calvin Coolidge in September 1927.
South Dakota State’s most recognizable landmark may be the 165-foot Coughlin Campanile, the state’s largest chimes tower. A climb of 179 steps leads to a panoramic view of the city. 1909 Engineering graduate Charles Coughlin, who later went on to become head of the Briggs & Stratton Corporation, donated the statuesque structure on the west end of campus at a cost of $65,000. Coughlin laid the campanile’s cornerstone on June 10, 1929. Since then, its chimes call students to classes with the famous Westminster peals. An alumni-sponsored project to restore the campanile was completed in the summer of 2001. Named after a former SDSU President, The Hilton M. Briggs Library, the state’s largest, opened in 1977 and joined South Dakota’s statewide automated library network in 1988. Through the library, users can access holdings from all 10 of the state’s libraries, including official documents and more than 1 million other holdings at Briggs. Adjacent to the campanile, Coolidge-Sylvan Theatre provides a restful, green haven for students since its dedication by President Calvin Coolidge in September 1927. Over the years the outdoor amphitheater hosted concerts, graduations and inaugurations for university presidents. Woodbine Cottage, the home of the university president, is a charming example of Queen Anne architecture. Built in 1887 by South Dakota Agricultural College’s second president, Dr. Lewis McLouth, the home is crowned by multiple rooflines. The house also served as a women’s dormitory, music hall and infirmary.
SOUTH DAKOTA ART MUSEUM—The museum is home to several collections, including early Sioux Indian tribal art, the famed Harvey Dunn paintings of pioneer life, and the exclusive Vera Way Marghab linens. The South Dakota Art Museum also has a variety of other exhibits throughout the year.

South Dakota State University You Can Go Anywhere From Here The Jackrabbits
Two theories exist as to how and why SDSU’s athletic teams became known as the “Jackrabbits”. Most believe that the name “Jackrabbits” came from a story and cartoon sketch that appeared in a Minneapolis newspaper following a 1905 football game between the University of Minnesota and South Dakota State College. Many believe that a reporter for the newspaper, knowing of the preponderance of jackrabbits in the Brookings area, wrote that the SDSC team was as quick as jackrabbits. Many people believe that the school adopted the Jackrabbits as its official nickname from that beginning. The other theory about the origin of the nickname came in The Jackrabbit, SDSU’s yearbook. A poem in the 1907 yearbook puts forth the idea that the yearbook is called The Jackrabbit because a group of juniors wished to immortalize themselves by changing the name of the yearbook. Athletic teams followed suit, adopting the nickname. Prior to the adoption of the Jackrabbit nickname, fans knew the school athletic teams as the Barn Yard Cadets as SDSU was known as South Dakota State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1907. The Jackrabbit can run at speeds of 30-to35 miles per hour, with bursts up to 45, making it the second fastest animal in North America, second only to the pronghorn antelope, which can run at speeds up to 60 miles per hour. Jackrabbits are, properly speaking, not rabbits but hares, with longer feet and longer ears than rabbits. Most hares live in open country, whereas rabbits - like cottontails - live in brushy habitats. Jackrabbits can grow up to two feet long, weigh froms six to nine pounds, with ears up to eight inches long. Hares are vegetarians, eating tender herbs in summer, and woody twigs and bark in the winter.

MEMORIAL PARK—Memorial Park, located between DuPuy Military Hall and Briggs Library in the center of campus, honors SDSU students who have served in the armed forces, including Congressional Medal of Honor recipients Capt. Willibald Bianchi and Col. Leo Thorsness. The park was dedicated in the fall of 2000.
enough to force doctors to amputate them. Undaunted, Brookings stayed and eventually became president of the territorial council and a judge in the state supreme court. In honor of his support of railroad construction, and possibly because of his stalwart nature, South Dakota’s first locomotive was named the “Judge Brookings.” Situated at the intersection of U.S. Highway 14 and Interstate 29, about 20 miles west of the Minnesota border and 50 miles north of Sioux Falls, the Brookings community of about 18,500 people continues to grow. The community also houses several recognizable companies including Rainbow Play Systems, Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing (3M medical products), Larson Manufacturing (doors and windows), and Daktronics, a leading manufacturer of scoreboards and display systems.
Named after W.W. Brookings, who came to the area in 1857. That winter, his legs froze badly
