2014 Preview
Goalkeepers
One of the fiercest battles for a starting position will happen in net. Last season, Nicole Inskeep earned the job after incumbent starter Elisa Stamatakis suffered a season-ending injury shortly before the first game. The freshman more than rose to the challenge, starting every game and tying the SDSU record for most shutouts in a single season in the process. With Stamatakis healthy and raring to go as she enters her senior season, Wedemeyer has two strong options in net. “We feel very confident that we have two goalkeepers that are both capable of helping us reach our goals,” Wedemeyer said. “It’s going to be fun to watch the two of them battle it out for the starting position.”
2013 Quick Hits • Nicole Inskeep led the Summit League in shutouts (11) and ranked second in save percentage (.818), GAA (0.75), wins (11) and minutes played (1676:32). • With 11 wins, Inskeep tied Elisa Stamatakis for fourth all-time in single season wins. She also tied Kat Donovan for first all-time in single-season shutouts. • Inskeep took home all-Summit League second-team and freshman-team honors and was also the league’s defensive player of the week two times. • Stamatakis lost the season to injury. She is ranked second all-time in career shutouts (13) and career starts (33) and third in career wins (16). She is also in the top 10 in most career statistical categories.
Defenders Last year, a stingy defense helped the Jackrabbits come out on top of eight of 12 games decided by one goal. And the Summit League will have to contend with that same back line again this year. Dani Patterson and Katie McNeary have started together since arriving in Brookings in 2012. They will once again anchor the back line. 2013 Quick Hits • SDSU’s back line posted 11 shutouts, six of which came against Summit League foes. • The Jackrabbits opened conference play by blanking their opponents in five consecutive games from Oct. 4 to Oct. 19. Each of these matches was won by a 1-0 score. • The Jacks limited opponents to seven goals in the second half and overtime. • Delaney Ratcliffe (2), Dani Patterson (1), Katie McNeary (1) and McKenzie Wolf (1) found the back of the net. Every defender who played in at least 14 games contributed at least one point. • Patterson was one of two Jackrabbits to earn all-Summit League first team accolades.

“Those two have been playing together now for two years and have done a great job,” Wedemeyer said. “We’ll look for their leadership quite a bit this coming fall.” Sophomores Ashley Adams and McKenzie Wolf earned all-Summit League freshman team honors in 2013 and will be counted on to continue their development. Returning players Delaney Ratcliffe, who appeared in every match in 2013, Sheridon Newberry, Megan Graf and Lindsee Larson round out the defense.
Midfielders Two of the three starters SDSU lost from last season are midfielders. Wedemeyer will need to find replacements for two stalwarts in 2013 captain Darci Miller and Caylee Costello. “The big hole for us will be in the midfield since Darci and Caylee played almost every minute of every game,” Wedemeyer said. “It may be a situation where we solve some of those issues by committee.” 2013 Quick Hits • Three of SDSU’s top five scorers were midfielders. These players – Alyssa Brazil, Caylee Costello and Darci Miller – accounted for 11 of the squad’s 25 goals. • Midfielders took 88 shots on net in total, with Brazil (30) recording the second-most shots on the team. • Brazil led SDSU in scoring, posting six goals and two assists. She also tied Costello and forward Diana Potterveld for the team lead in game-winning goals (2) and was the lone Jackrabbit to convert on a penalty kick. • Costello was one of two Jackrabbits to earn al-Summit League first team honors, while Miller was one of two named to the second team.
Alyssa Brazil will be expected to build upon her breakout sophomore season, while sophomores Madison Yueill and Lauren Kressock will be given the opportunity to take on expanded roles. Seniors Sydney Tobin and Kristin Ford and freshmen Julia Lam and Bianca Madonia will provide depth in the midfield. “We have some very good midfielders that we think can do a very good job, and we have some good freshmen coming in to give us depth,” Wedemeyer said. “Hopefully some of those players step up and fill those roles.”
• Miller ended her SDSU career having seen action in 72 of a possible 74 games. She started every game as a junior and senior alongside Costello.
Storylines
Forwards
• Lang Wedemeyer achieved his 125th career victory last season. This year, he will go for his 100th career win at the Division I level. He sits at 93 DI wins.
Wedemeyer is excited about his front line. With Diana Potterveld healthy and a talented crop of freshmen joining the squad, the Jackrabbits will have greater firepower up front than they did in 2013.
• The Jacks will play Saint Mary’s (Calif.) for the first time in program history. The teams are meeting in Lawrence, Kan. Saint Mary’s will also be SDSU’s first West Coast Conference opponent.
“Diana struggled with injuries last year, which took away that threat for us, especially through most of conference play,” Wedemeyer said. “We feel confident that Diana’s back, and we have a lot of attacking power in our freshman class with people like Nicole Hatcher, Tori Poole and Amber Greely.” Last year, Shelby Raper and Alexa Trakalo gained valuable experience when Potterveld and 2014 grad Stacy Guijarro went down with injuries. They give Wedemeyer another option up front, as does senior Stephanie Krzywania. “Steph hasn’t played a lot in her career, but she really had a good spring so we’re hopeful that she’ll finish up her career on a high note and be able to give us good minutes up front and score some goals,” Wedemeyer said.
#RabbitsFutbol
• On back-to-back Fridays, SDSU will face a bitter rival on the road. The Jacks travel to North Dakota State on Oct. 19 and South Dakota on Oct. 24.
2013 Quick Hits • Diana Potterveld and Megan Kingston finished tied for second on the team in points (8). • Shelby Raper and Alexa Trakalo were two of six freshmen to appear in every game. • Raper was one of four freshmen to earn all-Summit League freshman team accolades. • In 2012, Potterveld recorded 19 points (8g-3a) en route to becoming the first Jackrabbit to earn league freshman of the year honors. She missed four games due to injury in 2013 but still notched three goals and two assists.
• The Jackrabbits will try to avoid the injury bug this year after losing three significant contributors Elisa Stamatakis, Lauren Kressock and Stacy Guijarro - to injury last year. Diana Potterveld and Dani Patterson also missed time. • Last year, SDSU was picked to finish fifth in the Summit League preseason poll. The Jacks finished in second place and will look to build upon that performance to win their second Summit League tournament title.

Jackrabbit Facilities Fishback Soccer Park The Jackrabbits play their home games at Fishback Soccer Park, which is roughly a 10-minute drive from campus. It has a 120-yard by 75-yard natural grass pitch with lights, stands that can seat about 500 fans, a two-story media box, locker rooms and a concession area. The playing surface is considered one of the best in the upper Midwest. Practice Soccer Field SDSU maintains a training facility on campus. It contains a 120-yard by 75-yard natural grass field with underground irrigation and grass that matches the playing surface at Fishback Soccer Park. It also features a goalkeeper training station and an agility and fitness area adjacent to the field. Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex The Sanford-Jackrabbit Complex is scheduled to open this fall after just over a year of construction. The multi-use facility features an indoor practice and competition space of more than 149,000 square feet and a human performance area of almost 15,000 square feet. It will house one of the only eight-lane, 300-meter tracks in the region, along with 100 yards of soy-based synthetic turf. Ground was broken in August 2013. The final beam was raised in March 2014, and the turf was installed in July. Fund-raising efforts kicked off in the summer of 2012, with leadership gifts from the Dale and Pat Larson family, First Bank & Trust, Sanford Health, Larson Manufacturing, Brookings Health System and other anonymous donors helping to make this program-changing facility a reality. Athletics Director Justin Sell said that the facility supports the athletic department's mission to develop lifelong champions and will have a positive impact on the university for decades to come. "The Indoor Practice and Human Performance Facility will have the greatest impact on our student-athletes. It is a game-changing opportunity to build a facility that will benefit the university for the next 50 years," Sell said. "The demands put on student-athletes today create the need for high-quality practice and support facilities that allow our student-athletes the opportunity to compete and excel at the highest levels."

Lang Wedemeyer has become synonymous with women’s soccer at South Dakota State. Entering his 15th year at the helm of the program he built, Wedemeyer will try to guide his talented young Jackrabbits back to NCAA postseason play and set some personal records along the way. Last season, SDSU rebounded from a trying 2012 campaign by finishing second in the Summit League and posting a 11-5-2 record. While the Jackrabbits endured a rash of injuries, they returned to their winning ways thanks to the contributions of freshmen like Nicole Inskeep, who started every game in net and tied the single-season program record for shutouts. Eight Jackrabbits were honored by the Summit League at the end of the season, with Caylee Costello and Dani Patterson headlining the group by earning spots on the first team. SDSU will face stiff competition for the 2014 Summit League crown, with nationally-ranked Denver looking to defend its title, but will be groomed for conference play by taking on a series of tough opponents, notably Creighton, Wisconsin and Minnesota. Wedemeyer will have the chance to capture his 100th victory at the Division I level, as he currently sits six wins shy of the milestone.
From The Ground Up In 2000, Wedemeyer launched a Division II women’s soccer program at SDSU with a roster of 19 players, just six of whom had previous collegiate experience. The roster also included six freshmen and four women who had played club soccer at SDSU in 1999. The roster was put together in just six months before the team took the field. SDSU posted a 5-12-0 record in its inaugural season. The team went 1-8-0 in the North Central Conference.
Building a Winning Tradition SDSU did not have to wait long for its women’s soccer team to start racking up wins, titles and honors under Wedemeyer’s watch. In just 14 years, Wedemeyer built a Division II soccer program from scratch and led his team through its transition to Division I play. In their fifth season at the DI level, the Jackrabbits earned their first trip to the NCAA tournament. There, they recorded their first NCAA postseason victory, a 1-0 upset of No. 14 Colorado. Since then, SDSU has reached the double digits in wins four of the past five seasons and missed the postseason just once.
SDSU Makes Transition to Division I When South Dakota State decided to take its athletic department to the Division I level, Wedemeyer was left with the unenviable task of recruiting players into a program that was not eligible for the NCAA postseason and did not have a conference affiliation. Wedemeyer accepted the challenge even though it came with low points. The program returned to where it was three years earlier, posting a 5-11-1 record during its first season at the DI level in 2004. The season, the Jackrabbits faced 11 DI opponents. On Sept. 12, they earned their first DI win, defeating

Youth Lead SDSU to Postseason Berth The following season, Wedemeyer welcomed a freshman class of 14 to SDSU. Even though they were young and relatively inexperienced, the Jackrabbits posted their first winning season en route to earning their first berth in the NCC’s four-team tournament. For his efforts, Wedemeyer was named the 2001 NCC Coach of the Year. In 2003, Wedemeyer had his first player earn AllAmerican honors. Senior Erin Miller posted a .915 save percentage and a 0.51 GAA, program records that still stand to this day. For her efforts, Miller was named the NCC Player of the Year and was honored as a second-team All-American.

Western Illinois, 2-0, at the Diadora Classic in Omaha, Neb. In 2005, the Jackrabbits endured another fivewin season but made positive strides, recording wins over DI foes Northern Iowa, Montana and Murray State and holding Big Ten member Minnesota scoreless on Sept. 11. Wedemeyer Leads Jacks to First Title SDSU joined the United Soccer Conference for its 2006 campaign. Through their first five games, the Jackrabbits posted a 3-1-1 record. But the team went 0-7-1 in its next eight games, scoring just one goal over that stretch. Four of those losses were by scores of 1-0. The Jackrabbits did not lose confidence in themselves and ran off a 5-1-1 record to close the season. In the USC tournament, goalkeepers Nicole Lograsso and Jenn Davis combined for three straight shutouts to lead the Jackrabbits to their first conference tournament title at any level. NCAA College Cup Contender The 2007 season marked the first year for SDSU as a member of The Summit League. In 2008, the Jackrabbits became a full Division I member, meaning they were finally eligible for NCAA postseason competition. And, in its first season of eligibility, Wedemeyer put his team in position to earn its first NCAA tournament berth. After winning the Summit League regular season title with a 7-1-0 record, the Jackrabbits won the conference tournament, earning them a trip to the NCAA College Cup. In the first round, Wedemeyer’s team pulled off its biggest upset in program history, taking down No. 14, fourth-seeded Colorado, 1-0. The win generated national attention and buzz throughout South Dakota, culminating in Wedemeyer being tabbed as the Soccerbuzz.com runner-up coach of the year and the South Dakota Sports Writers Women’s College Coach of the Year. That season, Wedemeyer coached six Summit League all-conference selections, two all-newcomer team members, the Summit League’s Defensive Player of the Year and an Academic All-American.

• The Summit League finished 2013-14 at an all-time high (No. 16) in the men’s basketball USA Today Sagarin Ratings and had a record three teams advance in national postseason tournaments. The league recorded a final No. 13 softball RPI, the sport’s all-time best and the second-highest for any league sport in history. • In 2013-14, Amanda Hyde (Fort Wayne) was named the women’s basketball Division I-AAA Athletics Director Association Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive season and Tim Colwell (North Dakota State) received the Capital One Baseball Academic All-American of the Year award. • A record 10 former Summit Leaguers were on NBA or NBA D-League rosters in 2013-14, led by George Hill (IUPUI) and Nate Wolters (South Dakota State) as starting guards for their NBA teams. • The Summit League set all-time highs in 2013-14 with 21 teams recording perfect NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores and 22 teams publicly recognized for posting multi-year APRs in the top 10 percent of their respective sports. A total of 13 Academic All-Americans and 30 Academic All-District honorees hailed from The Summit League last season. • The Summit League Basketball Championships, called “March’s Best-Kept Secret” by USA Today, rank among the nation’s top mid-major tournament environments and continue to set attendance, revenue and sponsorship records. In 2015, The Summit League Basketball Championships move into the brandnew Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls, S.D. HISTORY Since its inception in 1982, The Summit League recorded several transcendent moments that resonate on the national stage. While known as the Mid-Continent Conference, the league’s first two decades produced a pair of appearances in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament’s “Sweet 16” and the Women’s College World Series as well as three individual NCAA Track and Field Champions. Oral Roberts gave The Summit League its initial baseball regional crown and Super Regional appearance in 2006 and three years later, North Dakota State became the league’s first softball team to achieve the same feat. The 2008-09 season also saw South Dakota State’s women’s basketball team carry a national ranking throughout a majority of the year and cap its season with an NCAA Tournament first round victory. In 2014, North Dakota State gained the national spotlight with a victory in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Round of 64. Throughout its history, The Summit League has produced 10 NCAA Championships, three Olympic medalists and numerous All-Americans in the sports of track and field, swimming and diving and cross country. Several professional athletes and draft choices have come directly from The Summit League, including three Major League Baseball first round picks, a pair of NBA first round choices, and one WNBA selection. In addition, Summit Leaguers compete in the MLS, and on the PGA and LPGA Tours. Former Summit Leaguer Kevin Duckworth (NBA) was a twotime all-star during his professional career. To coincide with The Summit League’s 30th Anniversary Season in 201112, the league released a list of its Top 30 Distinguished Contributors from the Division I era as selected by a panel of voters from member schools and the media. Four individual NCAA champions and three Olympic medalists along with four NBA players and two World Series Champions headlined The Summit League’s list of top student-athletes, coaches and administrators that was the jewel of the anniversary celebration. 38

Legend of the Jackrabbit
There are two theories as to how and why the Jackrabbit nickname evolved. The most common belief is that the name “Jackrabbits” came from a story and cartoon sketch that appeared in a Minneapolis newspaper following a 1905 football game between the University of Minnesota and South Dakota State College, as the university was then known. A reporter for the newspaper, knowing of the preponderance of jackrabbits in the Brookings area, was believed to have written that the SDSC team was as quick as jackrabbits. Many people believe that the school adopted the Jackrabbits as its official nickname from that beginning. The other theory about the origin of the nickname is given in The Jackrabbit, SDSU’s yearbook. There is a poem in the 1907 yearbook that puts forth the idea that the yearbook is called The Jackrabbit because a group of juniors wished to immortalize themselves by changing the name of the yearbook. Athletic teams followed suit, adopting the nickname. Prior to the adoption of the Jackrabbit nickname, school athletic teams were known as the Barn Yard Cadets as SDSU was known as South Dakota State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1907.

WELCOME TO SOUTH DAKOTA STATE UNIVERSITY South Dakota State University is the state’s Morrill Act land-grant university and its largest, most comprehensive institution of higher education. It has an enrollment of 12,554 students from all 50 states and 70 countries who can choose from more than 175 majors, minors and specializations. The institution also offers 29 master’s degree programs, 13 Ph.D. and two professional programs. SDSU has grown from 80 acres at its founding in 1881 to a 422-acre campus with facilities valued at more than $381 million. The university owns or leases another 15,000 acres of land for research throughout the state. The university provides a rich academic experience in an environment of inclusion and access through inspired, student-centered education, creative activities and research, innovation and engagement that improve the quality of life in South Dakota, the region, the nation and the world. SDSU confers degrees through six colleges: Agriculture and Biological Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Education and Human Sciences, the Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering, Nursing and Pharmacy, as well as the Graduate School. Qualified students may enroll in the Van D. and Barbara B. Fishback Honors College. The Office of Continuing and Distance Education facilitates distance delivery of credit and noncredit programming, and University Centers in Sioux Falls, Pierre and Rapid City offer degree programs and student support services comparable to those offered on the Brookings campus. SDSU Extension and the Agricultural Experiment Station reach all parts of the state. The federally funded North Central Regional Sun Grant Center (focused on developing biobased energy alternatives) and the North Central Agricultural Research Laboratory (the only USDA Agricultural Research Service facility in the state), along with the Northern Plains Biostress Laboratory, the Water and Environmental Engineering Research Center, the Animal Disease Research and Diagnostic Laboratory and the Northeast Research Center near South Shore demonstrate the university’s commitment to purpose-driven research and that supports economic development. Other Facilities The South Dakota Art Museum’s collections showcase the state’s rich art history, including early masterpieces of Native American art, the famed Harvey Dunn paintings of pioneer life and the exclusive Vera Way Marghab linens. The South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum

transformed the former Stock Judging Pavilion into a home for exhibits that record and preserve the agrarian heritage of South Dakota. Visitors attend the museum from all 50 states and many foreign countries. McCrory Gardens provides a beautiful setting to learn about ornamental plants adapted to the Northern Great Plains. Eenjoy a stroll through the radiant colors and fragrances of the 25+ acres of trial and display gardens, wander through the 40-acre ar-
boretum or attend a special event in the Education and Visitor Center. The Hilton M. Briggs Library serves students, faculty, staff and the broader South Dakota community through its holdings of more than one million items, 32,000 online journals, 18,000 electronic books, and 80,000 maps. The library has served as a depository for federal documents since 1889. The archives and special collections encompass 7,500 linear feet of materials and 1,675 digitized items. The Senator Thomas A. Daschle Congressional Research Study allows for public access to the career papers of Senator Daschle, a 1969 SDSU
graduate. Located within the Special Collections area on the upper level of the Hilton M. Briggs Library, the papers consist of more than 2,000 linear feet of materials that document the senator’s 26year career in the U.S. House and Senate from 1979 to 2004. The American Indian Education and Cultural Center at SDSU is the nexus of cultural programming, services and advocacy to support American Indian students, encourage appreciation of cultural and human differences and advocate for the inclusion of Indigenous knowledge. Research and Economic Development Research has been an essential part of the university’s mission since passage of the 1887 Hatch Act, which established state agricultural experiment stations. SDSU has the most active research program in the state with nearly $70 million in research expenditures, and in 2006 the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching designated SDSU as South Dakota’s first High Research Activity institution. In addition to 42 graduate programs offered in six colleges, undergraduates also have research opportunities led by innovative faculty in renewable energy, food, health sciences, engineering and nursing, as well as with programs like the Sun Grant Initiative and the Geographic Information Science Center of Excellence. SDSU currently is home to three statefunded Governor’s Research Centers: the Center for Biological Control and Analysis by Applied Photonics, and the Drought Tolerance and Translational Cancer Research centers. SDSU researchers also participate in two other Governor’s Research Centers focused on materials and manufacturing at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. In addition, SDSU is the lead for the multi-institution South Dakota Research Innovation Center: the Biochemical Spatioltemporal NeTwork Resource Center. The Technology Transfer Office, which assists SDSU researchers in commercializing intellectual properties and fosters collaborations between the university and industry partners, has generated some $1.8 million in royalties annually since 2010 via an average of 178 total agreements each year, including invention disclosures, patents filed and agreements with start-ups. Industry partnerships through the Research Park at South Dakota State enable technology transfer and stimulate economic development for the state.

PROGRESSIVE
EXCELLENCE The South Dakota State University campus has seen numerous building projects the past 10 past years. And it is not slowing. Currently under construction are the Architecture, Mathematics and Engineering Building, the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex and an updated Medary Commons. The Architecture, Mathematics and Engineering Building will become home for several of the most dynamic programs on campus including: • Center for Financial Analytics, • Center for Statistics and Biometrics, • Center for Computational Science, • Senior Design Lab for Mechanical Engineering, and • Engineering Resource Center. Construction of that 60,000-square-foot, $17 million project started in fall 2013 after the summer was spent cleaning and then demolishing Solberg Annex and the Industrial Arts Building. The new building’s footprint also extends to the parking lot north of those structures. Completion is set for early 2015 with most of the moving to occur in spring and summer 2015. The first floor will be home to the mechanical engineering prototyping and design labs and construction and operations management departments as well as shared lab space with architecture. The mathematics and statistics department will be on the second floor while the third floor will house the architecture department. The Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex is a multi-purpose indoor competition and training facility currently under construction at South Dakota State University. The project, which will cost an estimated $32 million, is scheduled to be completed this fall. The facility will include an eight-lane, 300-meter track and 100 yards of synthetic turf, along with space for sports medicine, athletic training, strength and conditioning, physical therapy, hydrotherapy, observation rooms and office facilities. The building formerly known as Medary Commons will be renamed the Enrollment Services Center. The following offices will be relocating to that site: enrollment services, admissions, financial aid, records and registration, and scholarships.

INNOVATIVE The Innovation Campus at South Dakota State University marks the state’s first and only university-affiliated research park. Located on 125 acres just east of campus, it provides an environment that fosters partnerships among the University, business, government and the community to grow the sciences and technology-based economy. SDSU is building a future for South Dakota, the nation and the globe. The primary charge of the land-grant mission is to create opportunities for the state through research and education. Research has been a vital part of SDSU since 1887 with the creation of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station. Since that time, SDSU has been the reliable resource for research-based information and community leadership. Today, research provides a solid knowledge base for economic development, SDSU’s academic programs, and experiential opportunities for students. In the spring 2013, South Dakota State University officials rolled out IMPACT 2018: A Strategic Vision for South Dakota State University. The five-year plan features four main goals: • Promote academic excellence through quality programs, engaged learners and an innovatie teaching and learning environment; • Generate new knowledge, encourage innovations and promote artistic and creative works that contribute to the public good and result in social, cultureal or economic development for South Dakota, the region, the nation and the world; • Extend the reach and depth fo the University by developing strategic programs and collaborations, and • Secure human and fiscal resources to ensure high performance through enhanced financial, management and governance systems.

Justin Sell
Athletic Director, South Dakota State University Bowling Green University, ‘91
Justin Sell joined the Jackrabbit staff May 7, 2009, as the 12th director of athletics at South Dakota State University. Sell oversees the Jackrabbits’ 21-sport Division I athletics program. Eighteen SDSU teams compete in The Summit League, while football competes in the Missouri Valley Football Conference of the Football Championship Subdivision and wrestling competes as a member of the Western Wrestling Conference. Equestrian competes under the umbrella of the National Collegiate Equestrian Association. Under Sell’s leadership, SDSU athletics continues to make strides in athletic competition, in the classroom, in fundraising and in reconnecting with alumni. Athletically, the Jackrabbits claimed 18 regular and postseason league championships in six different sports since 2009-10. That broad-based success has led SDSU to claim The Summit League Commissioner’s Cup all-sports trophy three times (2010-11, 2012-13, 2013-14), along with winning both The Summit League’s Dr. William Steinbrecher Men’s AllSports Award and Dr. Helen Smiley Women’s All-Sports Award during the 2013-14 season. SDSU also claimed the Steinbrecher award during the 2012-13 season and was the recipient of the league’s Sportsmanship Award, an award voted upon by its peers, during the 2010-11 campaign. In the classroom, Jackrabbit student-athletes continually post a GPA of 3.2 or higher in more than 70 different majors, which led SDSU to winning The Summit League’s Institutional Academic Achievement Award for the 2009-10 and 2012-13 academic years and the Missouri Valley Football Conference Academic Award in all six years in the league (2008-13). In January 2011, Sell announced a partnership with Learfield Sports, signing

Environmental Sciences (ACES) from 14 administrative units to seven academic departments and the Information Technology unit, completed a capital campaign for ACES surpassing the final goal of $115 million by raising $134 million in private gifts, grew the ACES endowment to $60 million and established $15 million in annual private gift support, funding endowed positions, scholarships and fellowships, and program support for teaching, research, and Extension; he also oversaw the completion of the $22 million ACES Library, Information and Alumni Center where $11 million was from gifts from ACES alumni and friends. He has co-authored four books, 12 book chapters and more than 100 invited and/or peer reviewed academic journal articles. Dr. Chicoine served as an advisor to the Illinois General Assembly on tax issues, farmland property tax assessments, public finance and rural economic issues. He served as a member of the Illinois Governor’s Council of Economic Advisors, and was a member of the board of the Illinois State Treasurer’s Technology Development Fund. He currently is a tenured faculty member in the SDSU Department of Economics, where he has been recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus. Chicoine served as the faculty representative to the Big Ten Conference and the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) for the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He served as chair of the Budget and Finance Committee for the Big Ten Conference for nine of his eleven year term. Dr. Chicoine is a graduate of SDSU with a B.S. in agribusiness in 1969, and the University of Delaware where he received an M.S. in agricultural economics in 1971. In 1978 he received an M.A. in economics from Western Illinois University, and in 1979 he completed his Ph.D. in agricultural economics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
a 10-year deal worth $13 million for SDSU athletics. Learfield Sports quickly established a Brookings-based entity known as “Jackrabbit Sports Properties” that directs all aspects of the partnership, including managing and selling multimedia and sponsorship rights for South Dakota State Athletics. In addition to the deal with Learfield Sports, Sell directed the implementation of the Letterwinners Club, which provides opportunities for Jackrabbit Athletics to reconnect and stay connected with former student-athletes, while supporting current student-athletes at South Dakota State. In the years to come, Sell wants to continue reconnecting with former Jackrabbit student-athletes and enhancing the athletic facilities while still maintaining success, both in competition, but more importantly, in the classroom. On the facilities front, Sell oversaw the completion of the Dykhouse StudentAthlete Center in 2010, and developed the 2025 SDSU Athletic Facilities Master Plan. Additionally, Sell spearheaded efforts to add permanent seating and a press box at Erv Huether Field, chairback seating in both Frost Arena and CoughlinAlumni Stadium. Construction of the indoor facility—the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex—began in August 2013, with completion slated for this fall. Lead gifts totaling $12.5 million toward the construction of a new football stadium with seating up to 20,000 were received in October 2013.The project will begin this fall, with completion set for summer 2016. Born in Salem, Ore., and raised in Columbus, Ohio, Sell came to South Dakota State from the University of Northern Iowa, where he worked in various roles, both at the university and in the community for 10 years. He also worked at Villanova University, Syracuse University, The Ohio State University and Bowling Green State University. Sell gained further experience working in the private sector for various sports teams and events. In the Brookings community, where Sell lives with his wife, Jennie, and their four children: Abbie, Zach, Josh and Eric, he serves as vice president of the Brookings Chamber of Commerce, vice president for the Brookings Friends of Baseball and on the Brookings Health System Board of Trustees. Sell earned his bachelor’s degree in sport management from Bowling Green State University (Ohio) in 1991 and completed a master’s degree in physical education/sport administration at The Ohio State University in 1992.

His primary responsibilities are to oversee the day-to-day operations of the department and to coordinate the implementation of the five-year strategic plan. He worked on the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex and Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium, including planning, design, fundraising and premium seating sales. Costello manages the athletic marketing, broadcast services, development, sports information and ticket operations and serves as the department liaison for Jackrabbit Sports Properties. He also works as the sport supervisor for the Jackrabbit volleyball, men’s basketball, wrestling teams. Before joining the Jackrabbits, Costello worked in a variety of roles for the Northern Iowa Athletic Department in his eight years on staff. In addition to increasing external exposure by securing two separate cable television agreements and adding radio affiliates, Costello also assisted in negotiating a 10-year agreement with Learfield Sports to provide additional marketing resources, and he developed programs like the Varsity Club, to re-engage former Panther student-athletes. A native of Fairbank, Iowa, Costello graduated from Loras College with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and sport science in 1998. While at Loras, he also played for the Duhawk men’s basketball team. Costello completed his master’s degree from Western Illinois University in sport management in 2002 and served an internship in marketing and game operations with the Boston Celtics. In the fall of 2002, Northern Iowa hired him as its athletic marketing and promotions assistant, where he worked for a year before earning a promotion to director of athletic marketing and promotions in January 2003. He and his wife, Heather, live in Brookings with their children, Cailin, Michael and Griffin.

Brown brought a decade of experience working in intercollegiate athletics, most recently as the director of development for UCLA Athletics. Brown spent the past year as director of development for UCLA Athletics. During his time with the Bruins, he oversaw major gift fundraising efforts for a variety of programs and directed the implementation of a sport specific program endowment initiative and the creation of an athletics-specific planned giving program. Before his time at UCLA, Brown held a variety of positions at the University of Iowa. He started as an intern in the ticket office before being named the director of premium seating and stadium club operations. He eventually became the associate director of development. During his time in Iowa City, Brown managed the Hawkeyes’ annual fund and served as the liaison between the University of Iowa Foundation and athletic ticket office. He also held leadership roles on a variety of capital projects, including the $35 million Iowa Football Legacy Campaign and $20 million Carver Hawkeye Arena Campaign. Originally from Storm Lake, Iowa, Brown played basketball and baseball at Simpson College (Iowa) before he graduated with bachelor’s degrees in sports administration and political science in 2003. He added a master’s degree in sport management from Western Illinois in 2005. Brown lives in Brookings with his wife, Kristy, and their children, Kinley and Easton.

The following guidelines apply specifically to Internet sites: • No more than two people working for the official Web site of the opponent and/ or its official conference site will be issued credentials. • Web sites whose content centers around message boards and chat rooms where users can post anonymous information and/or rumors are ineligible for any consideration for credentials or access. • Credentials will not be granted to any agency operating sites that are in any way affiliated with gambling, or to freelance or fan-based sites that are not affiliated with a legitimate news-gathering organization. The final decision for credentials remains at the sole discretion of the South Dakota State sports information department. Statistics: The South Dakota State sports information office will keep official statistics and will distribute final statistics to teams and members of the media after the conclusion of a game.
