Dr. David L. Chicoine • President David L. Chicoine, Ph.D., has served as the 19th president of South Dakota State University on January 1, 2007, becoming the third alumnus to lead the state’s largest institution of higher education. President Chicoine, who graduated in 1969 with a bachelor of science in agribusiness, also holds an appointment as professor in the Department of Economics. President Chicoine has a long association with intercollegiate athletics, and is currently serving a four-year term on the NCAA Presidential Advisory Group. Chicoine also serves as chair of the President’s Council for The Summit League — SDSU’s conference home for 18 of its 21 varsity sports — during the 2011-12 academic year, after filling the role of vice chair for two years. Previously, Chicoine served as the faculty representative to the Big Ten Conference and the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) for the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He served as chair of the Budget and Finance Committee for the Big Ten Conference for nine years of his 11-year term. Upon his arrival at SDSU, Chicoine implemented an aggressive strategic plan — “Achieving National Distinction, Strengthening Local Relevance.” The plan has four goals: enhancing academic excellence, fostering economic growth, expanding the reach of the university, and creating a sustainable financial resource. During his tenure, enrollment has reached record levels of undergraduate students and Ph.D. candidates. Correspondingly, the amount of research grants and contract awards has jumped nearly 90 percent during that time, and research expenditures exceeded $60 million in the 2010-2011 academic year. To support the strategic plan, the SDSU Foundation in 2008 launched an aggressive comprehensive fund-raising effort — “It Starts with STATE: A Campaign for South Dakota State University” — which recently reached its goal of $200 million. The most visible support for the campaign can be seen in several construction and renovation projects funded primarily by generous donors, all part of the largest campus building boom since the 1960s. The majority of the facilities enhance the university’s research capabilities and allow for new discoveries that drive technology-based economic development in South Dakota. Building a better academic model has also been part of President Chicoine’s agenda. In the fall of 2010, SDSU launched the state’s first architecture program through its College of Arts and Sciences. The program, created without any new state funding, will place a special emphasis on sustainable and renewable design practices. The Chicoine administration also developed the new College of Education and Human Sciences in 2009, a merger of the former College of Education and Counseling, College of Family and Consumer Sciences and the Department of Health and Physical Education. It represented the first significant academic restructuring in more than 40 years. Dr. Chicoine brought more than 30 years of experience in higher education with the University of Illinois to his role as president of SDSU and is a nationally recognized economist. Chicoine received an M.S. in agricultural econcomics from the University of Delaware in 1971, and completed an M.A. in economics at Western Illinois University. In 1979, he completed his Ph.D. in agricultural economics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Justin Sell • Director of Athletics Justin Sell has moved Jackrabbit Athletics forward in a number of areas of its Division I pursuits since being introduced as the 12th director of athletics at South Dakota State University on May 7, 2009. At South Dakota State, Sell oversees the Jackrabbits’ 21-sport Division I varsity athletics program. Eighteen SDSU teams compete in The Summit League, while football competes in the Missouri Valley Football Conference of the Football Championship Subdivision, and wrestling is a member of the Western Wrestling Conference. Women’s equestrian competes under the National Collegiate Equestrian Association banner. During his first three years, the Jacks displayed success across the board, winning both the Summit League Commissioner’s Cup — the league’s all-sports championship — and the Summit League Sportsmanship Award during the 2010-11 school year. Individually, SDSU has claimed two Summit League regular season titles in men’s cross country (2009, 2010) and women’s soccer (2009, 2011), as well as regular season league titles in baseball (2010) and women’s basketball (2012). In addition, the women’s basketball team won three Summit League postseason tournament titles from 2010-12, the men’s basketball team claimed a tournament title in 2012, and the Jackrabbit football team reached the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs for the first time in 2009. Sell also has implemented aggressive marketing and fundraising initiatives which resulted in record average attendance for football during the 2009 season, as well as the highest number of donors and dollars donated to the Jackrabbit Club. Ticket sales totaled more than $1 million for the first time during the 2011-12 academic year. In the classroom, Jackrabbit student-athletes have excelled, posting a cumulative 3.195 grade-point average during the 2011-12 academic year. Fifteen of the Jackrabbits’ 17 varsity teams included in the report — cross country and track and field are combined into one team each for men and women — compiled team GPAs of 3.00 or higher. Individually, 269 of 455 Jackrabbit student-athletes — 59 percent — posted a GPA of 3.0 or higher during the spring semester. Of that group, 146 recorded a GPA of 3.5 or higher and 57 had a perfect 4.0 GPA during the spring term. A 1991 graduate of Bowling Green State University (Ohio) who later earned a M.S degree at The Ohio State University, Sell previoulsy served as senior associate athletic director at the University of Northern Iowa. His primary duties at UNI included sport management, oversight of the athletic business office, facilities, game management, summer camps and human resources, while also assisting in fundraising and corporate sponsorships. In his previous roles as an assistant and associate athletic director at UNI, Sell managed facility operations and the planning of capital projects, including the $26 million McLeod Center and the $7 million Human Performance Center.

WOMEN’S PREVIEW

The South Dakota State University men’s swimming and diving team will attempt to continue its steady rise in the ranks of the Summit League during the 2012-13 season. The Jackrabbits, who posted their best-ever finish at the league championships with a second-place showing in 2012, return 11 lettermen from a year ago. Leading the Jackrabbits in the freestyle events are school-record holders Wil Hogue and Kyle Ochsner. Hogue enjoyed a stellar first season in the SDSU lineup, setting Jackrabbit record times of 20.70 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle and 45.75 seconds in the 100 freestyle en route to a pair of fifth-place finishes at the league championships. He also placed seventh in the 200 freestyle. Hogue will be joined on the sprints crew by freshman Ben Bolinske, a North Dakota high school champion in the 100 freestyle, and junior Jack Morrow. Ochsner, meanwhile, holds school records in the 200 freestyle up to the 1,650 freestyle. A native of Jordan, Minn., Ochsner posted fourthplace finishes in both the 500 and mile at the league championships, along with a sixth-place effort in the 200. Joining Ochsner in the distance events are sophomore returners Blake Yeager and Nathaniel Weinman. Yeager turned in fifth-place finishes in both the 500 and 1,650 freestyle at the 2012 league championships, while Weinman’s top finish was a ninth-place showing in the mile. SDSU also returns both of its top performers in the backstroke events. Junior Phil Albu holds school records in both the 100 and 200 backstroke and is coming off a third-place finish in the 100 at conference. He also placed fifth in the 200 backstroke and 11th in the 50 freestyle last season at the league meet. Sophomore Alex McLain holds the second-fastest time in school history in the 200 backstroke and ranks third in the 100 backstroke. However, his best finish at the 2012 league championships was a sixthplace effort in the 500 freestyle. Senior Shea Patrick anchors the Jackrabbits in the breaststroke and individual medley events after a fourth-place showing in the 200 breaststroke at the Summit League Championships, while newcomer Garth Wadsworth is expected to lead SDSU in the butterfly. The Jackrabbits also figure to rack up points in the diving events as school-record holders Clark Kocourek and Brad Schoreit both return. Kocourek placed second on the 1-meter board at conference a year ago, while Schoreit finished fourth on both 1- and 3-meter boards.

A mix of steady veterans and an exciting group of newcomers has the South Dakota State University women’s swimming and diving team poised to continue its recent run of success during the 2012-13 season. The Jackrabbits, who have placed second at each of the last three Summit League Championships, are again picked second in the preseason poll conducted among the league’s coaches. SDSU returns a solid nucleus of 11 letterwinners, led by juniors Andrea Budahl and Kaylin Caron. A Mitchell native, Budahl posted three top-five individual finishes at last season’s Summit League Championships. She placed third in the 1,650-yard freestyle en route to a school record, followed by fifth-place efforts in both the 500 freestyle and 400 individual medley. Caron, a Marshall, Minn., product, also turned in a third-place finish for the Jackrabbits, clocking a school-record time of 52.26 seconds in the finals of the 100 freestyle. She also turned in top-10 finishes in both the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Sophomore Nicole Grimit also returns after clocking three top-eight finishes in the freestyle sprints, as do juniors Selina Gilbertson and Shauna Foor. The distance freestyle contingent is paced by Emma Gaulke-Janowski and Kelsey Boucher, both juniors. Gaulke-Janowski finished fifth in the 1,650 freestyle and seventh in the 500, while Boucher turned in top-10 finishes in the 1,650 freestyle (seventh), 400 individual medley (ninth) and 500 freestyle (10th) at conference. Adding depth in the sprint freestyle and butterfly events is newcomer Devonne Dalin. The Sioux Falls native is a transfer from the University of North Dakota. Also in the butterfly events the Jackrabbits welcome the return of junior Emmalee Wright and sophomore Trina Young. Wright recorded a third-place finish in the 200 butterfly at the league championships, while Young placed sixth. Wright also competed in both the 200 and 400 individual medleys, posting a sixth-place showing in the 400 IM. Senior Kylie Poel placed seventh in the 200 butterfly, giving the Jackrabbits three swimmers in the event finals. Senior Lisa Newberger is expected to again lead the Jackrabbits in the backstroke events, while newcomer Kayce Smith will likley pace SDSU in the breaststroke events. Fellow newcomer Olivia Olesiak is the lone diver on the Jackrabbit roster. She posted three top-10 finishes at the Minnesota state meet during her high school career.

WIL HOGUE set school records in the 50 and 100 freestyle last season.

THE SUMMIT LEAGUE#thesummitleague

IUPUI’s Chen Ni became the first female in Summit League history to win two NCAA Championships, after winning the platform dive in 2010 and 2012. As The Summit League enters its fourth decade of Division I athletics, the performance level continues to rise to higher standards. A memorable 2011-12 campaign celebrated numerous record-setting and remarkable achievements for The Summit League, its member schools and student-athletes during the league’s 30th anniversary season. “Ascending” and “improving” are common adjectives used in media coverage of The Summit League as it continues its renaissance. Consisting of nine member institutions with over 3,000 studentathletes competing in 19 championship sports, The Summit League has enjoyed unprecedented success and development in recent history. Since rebranding as The Summit League in 2007, the league has produced 54 All-Americans, 37 Academic All-America selections and seven NCAA Championships. In the past seven seasons, Summit League teams have achieved final national rankings in six different sports, won NCAA regional championships in two sports and advanced in three additional NCAA team championship tournaments. That level of success carries into both the classroom and athletic competition.

Record-Setting 2011-12 Season In 2011-12 alone, The Summit League nearly doubled its all-time NCAA Champions total by claiming four national titles. IUPUI’s Chen Ni became the first female to win multiple NCAA crowns when she claimed her second platform diving championship in three seasons. The Summit League produced its most successful NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships to date when its student-athletes won three titles. Southern Utah’s Cameron Levins, one of three finalists for the prestigious Bowerman Award, won the 10,000-meter and 5,000-meter races and became The Summit League’s first studentathlete to finish first in multiple events at a single championship. Oral Roberts’ Jack Whitt gave the league its third title when he won the pole vault competition. Two additional student-athletes collected NCAA statistical championships as Oakland’s Reggie Hamilton became The Summit League’s first men’s basketball national scoring leader and Western Illinois’ Sammy Marshall was softball’s national leader in stolen bases per game. The Summit League’s growth and success is most evident at the annual Basketball Championships. Its 2012 event set a record for total attendance, including the all-time highest women’s tournament figure and the third-best overall men’s draw. The last four tournaments occupy each of the top four all-time tournament attendance totals in league history. Popularity of The Summit League’s marquee event reaches beyond the arena. The 2012 Basketball Championships marked the first time in league history that all 14 men’s and women’s tournament games

28 Swimming & Diving

appeared on national cable television. Since 2009, every tournament game has been televised, including the men’s championship on ESPN2 and the women’s title game on ESPNU. Men’s Basketball enjoyed a stellar season on and off the court. The Summit League finished 2011-12 with its highest RPI ranking in history, placing 16th among Division I conferences after peaking as high as No. 11 earlier in the season. A record five teams played in national postseason tournaments with one, Oakland, making the deepest run in league history with three wins and a semifinal appearance in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. The league-wide success translated to unprecedented fan support and an all-time best home attendance figure. Throughout the 2011-12 season, The Summit League measured up well against men’s basketball leagues across the country and finished with a .500 or better record against 15 of the 17 midmajor conferences. Against both Division I and overall non-league competition, The Summit League amassed its highest victory total and posted its best winning percentage on record. Under the national spotlight, The Summit League was one of only two conferences with multiple participating teams to post perfect records in nationallytelevised BracketBuster games. In women’s athletics, The Summit League sent a record four teams to compete in national women’s basketball postseason tournaments, including an all-time high three in the WNIT. The volleyball season saw The Summit League ranked as high as No. 13 among the 33 Division I leagues in the Pablo Ranking system. With three national champions and the two-highest placing teams in league history at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, The Summit League solidified itself as one of the national leaders in the sport. During the Indoor season, The Summit League finished ninth among men’s Division I leagues in the final USTFCCCA conference index. A combined 12 men’s and women’s Indoor and Outdoor AllAmerica honors went to Summit League student-athletes. The Summit League emphasizes a balance of outstanding athletics and academics. The NCAA honored a record 15 Summit League teams for APR success that included finishing among the top 10 percent for their sport. Individually, North Dakota State’s Amy Anderson continued to garner recognition as one of the NCAA’s top student-athletes by earning the National Golf Coaches Association’s Dinah Shore Trophy recognizing achievement in athletic performance, grade point average and community service. Similar honors went to IUPUI’s men’s soccer standout Perez Agaba, who earned selection to the Lowe’s Senior CLASS All-America team. A total of seven Summit League student-athletes were named to their sport’s Capital One Academic All-America teams, includes three first team honorees.

Origins and Evolution In 1982, the present-day Summit League was formed by commissioner F.L. “Frosty” Ferzacca as the Association of MidContinent Universities with eight schools competing in five championship sports at the Division I level. Later known as the

SUMMIT LEAGUE MEMBERSHIP

One of the Summit League’s most iconic moments came when Valparaiso’s Bryce Drew hit “the shot”, a game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer, to top Mississippi in the first round of the 1998 NCAA Tournament. Valpo’s story captivated the nation as they became the league’s second team to reach the “Sweet 16.” Mid-Continent Conference, The Summit League has grown to a combined enrollment of over 144,000 students at nine universities, four of which are based in top-58 U.S. metro populations (Detroit, Indianapolis, Kansas City and Omaha). The Summit League’s two newest members, South Dakota and Nebraska Omaha, compete together for the first time in 2012-13. Admitted to the league in 2009, USD completed its initial year of league competition in 2011-12 and is eligible for all championships this season. UNO joined the league in 2011 and is in its first year of Summit League competition before becoming fully eligible for all sport championships in 2015-16. Current Summit League member institutions include: IPFW (Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne), IUPUI (Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis), UMKC (University of MissouriKansas City), the University of Nebraska Omaha, North Dakota State University, Oakland University, the University of South Dakota, South Dakota State University, and Western Illinois University. Eastern Illinois University competes as an associate member in swimming and diving and men’s soccer and Oral Roberts University is an associate member for men’s soccer. These member institutions pride themselves on providing quality athletic, academic and social experiences for their student-athletes. The Summit League sponsors 19 championship sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, men’s and women’s tennis, and volleyball. The league champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament in all applicable sports. Since its inception in 1982, The Summit League has had several transcendent moments on the national stage. In 1986, Cleveland State upset third-seeded Indiana in the first round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament on its way to a berth in the Sweet 16. A decade later, Valparaiso captured the nation’s attention when Bryce Drew hit “the shot” to topple No. 4 seed Mississippi in an NCAA first-round game that sparked its 1998 Sweet 16 run. More recently, Oral Roberts’ baseball program finished the 2004 campaign with a nationalranking and became the first Summit League school to reach an NCAA Super Regional in 2006. Three years later in 2009, North Dakota State became the league’s first softball team to win an NCAA regional and advance to the Super Regional round. During the 2008-09 basketball season, South Dakota State’s women’s team was nationally-ranked throughout the year and capped its season with an NCAA Tournament first round victory. The League has produced nine NCAA champions, four Olympic medalists and numerous All-Americans in the sports of track and field, swimming and diving and cross country. Several professional athletes and draft choices have come directly from The Summit League, including three Major League Baseball first round picks, a pair of NBA first round choices, and one WNBA selection. Former Summit Leaguer Kevin Duckworth (NBA) was a two-time all-star during his professional career. To coincide with The Summit League’s 30th Anniversary Season, the league released a list of its Top 30 Distinguished Contributors from the Division I era as selected by a panel of voters from member schools and media. Four individual NCAA champions and three Olympic medalists along with four NBA players and two World Series Champions headlined The Summit League’s list of top student-athletes, coaches and administrators that was the jewel of the anniversary celebration.

• South Dakota State University • With an enrollment of 12,583 in the fall of 2012, South Dakota State University remains the state’s largest higher education institution. EARLY HISTORY Located in Brookings, SDSU was authorized in 1881 by the Territorial Legislative Assembly and serves as the state’s land-grant institution. Territorial Council member John O’Brien Scobey, failing to obtain the penitentiary for Brookings, managed to secure Dakota Agricultural College for his city. Although allocations fell short of the actual cost, the school was able to open in the fall of 1884 because the president, George Lilley, was willing to advance $500 — one-third of his salary — to finish three rooms in the new Central Building. In 1887, the Agricultural Experiment Station was established under the federal Hatch Act and linked to the University to conduct research that concerned agriculture and the home. The Cooperative Extension Service was added in 1914 through the Smith-Lever Act. During the first year of operation, only preparatory classes were held. College classes started in 1885 with five teachers, 17 freshman and 61 preparatory students. Growth was slow and erratic for many years, but by the turn of the 20th century there were 242 students. By 1990, enrollment topped more than 9,000 students. Today, students from all 50 states and more than 40 nations attend SDSU. More than 70,000 degrees have been granted since the college was chartered in 1881.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE UNIVERSITY features an 18-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio. Over the past five years, the average placement rate at SDSU has been 95 percent, with placement in selected majors like pharmacy and engineering approaching 100 percent.

COLLEGES ESTABLISHED The structure of the college became more complex as enrollments increased. The first nine chairs of instruction established in 1884 included agriculture, science, mathematics,

English, modern languages, military tactics, veterinary science, practical business, political and domestic economy, and music. By 1907, the year the name of the institution was changed to South Dakota State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, there were 22 departments on campus. In 1964, when “State College” was renamed South Dakota State University, there were six colleges; today degrees are offered through these eight colleges: • Agricultural and Biological Sciences • Arts and Sciences • Education and Human Sciences • Engineering • General Studies • Nursing • Pharmacy • Graduate School • Honors College SDSU also offers degree programs through the University Center in Sioux Falls. Evening, RDTN, Internet and off-campus courses are coordinated through the Office of Academic Affairs and Outreach. (continued on next page)

• South Dakota State University • SDSU BY THE NUMBERS In its 130-year history, South Dakota State has grown from a campus of 80 acres in 1881 to a 422-acre campus with facilities worth nearly $400 million. The University owns or leases another 15,000 acres for research throughout the state. South Dakota State University is experiencing unprecedented growth, both in enrollment and building projects. Projects recently completed include: • The $48 million, 144,000-square-foot Avera Health and Science Center; • Daktronics Engineering Hall, a 30,000square-foot building that will house an expansion within the College of Engineering; • The $6 million Dykhouse Student-Athlete Center; • Jackrabbit Village, a complex of suite-style residence halls; • A University Student Union expansion and renovation project; • A $7.8 million campus wellness center; and • Expansion of the dairy manufacturing plant. Additional facility projects and enhancements to academic programs have been identified through the SDSU Foundation’s “It Starts With STATE” campaign, a comprehensive fundraising inititative which raised more than $200 million by the end of 2012. One of the projects outlined in the “It Starts With STATE” campaign is an Indoor Practice and Human Performance Center. Construction on the project, which is estimated to cost $2428 million, is expected to begin in spring 2013.

In addition, the Enterprise Institute building, which also houses the SDSU Foundation, was completed in the fall of 2004. The Enterprise Institute is designed to facilitate SDSU and industry resources to encourage and assist the establishment of entrepreneurial growth enterprises in the region. More than 200 majors, minors and options are available at SDSU with more than 2,500 different course offerings. Master’s degrees are offered in more than 30 areas and doctorates are available in eight fields. SDSU is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and numerous departments on campus have earned accreditation from various agencies. More than 2,000 people are employees of SDSU, and the University’s total operating budget was more than $200 million in Fiscal Year 2012. Supplementing classroom instruction are the Harding Distinguished Lecture Series, the F.O. Butler Lectures, the Lusk Lecture and the Amdahl, Schultz-Werth and Griffiths endowments. Students also have the opportunity to choose from more than 200 clubs and organizations active on campus. RESEARCH SDSU has the highest percentage of undergraduates involved in research of any South Dakota public university. SDSU is large enough to offer competitive research opportunities, yet small enough to foster student-faculty learning opportunities. In 2006, SDSU was recognized by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as the state’s only RU/H (research uni-

• South Dakota State University • Initiative. The Sun Grant Initiative is a concept to solve America’s energy needs and revitalize rural communities with Land-Grant university research, education and Extension programs on renewable energy and bio-based non-food industries. The Sun Grant Initiative will involve several SDSU departments, including mechanical engineering, biology and microbiology, the Geographic Information Science Center of Excellence, nutrition and food sciences, chemistry and plant science. • The Economics Department is studying the economic impact of ethanol development on the state’s economy and the logistics of using biomass for producing renewable fuels. As part of the Governor’s 2010 Initiative, a goal is for South Dakota to become a recognized leader in research and technology development. To realize this goal, SDSU faculty are involved in five research centers: • Center for Infectious Disease Research and Vaccinology • Center for Bioprocessing Research and Development • Center for Drought Tolerance Biotechnology • Center for Accelerated Applications at the Nanoscale • Center for the Research and Development of Light-Activated Materials An agreement between SDSU and Argonne National Laboratory will develop opportunities for SDSU faculty and students working in partnership to pursue fields of science that advance science and technology-driven economic development in South Dakota. MUSEUMS AND ATTRACTIONS The educational opportunities don’t end in the classroom or laboratory as South Dakota State University is home to several facilities, including museums and gardens, which highlight South Dakota history and heritage. The South Dakota Art Museum houses several collections, including early Sioux Indian tribal art, the famed Harvey Dunn paintings of pioneer life and the exclusive Vera Way Marghab linens. The State Agricultural Heritage Museum transformed the former Stock Judging Pavilion into a home for exhibits that record and preserve the agrarian heritage of South Dakota. The 70-acre McCrory Gardens and South Dakota Arboretum, located south and east of campus, provide a beautiful setting for area residents and tourists to enjoy a stroll through the radiant colors and fragrances of one of the

top 10 small ornamental gardens in the nation. It is also recognized as an All-American Display Garden, one of only 13 in the nation. In 1993, McCrory Gardens was designated an All-American Judging Garden to conduct research on annual flowers. In 1982, the area north of the formal garden was dedicated to the planting and testing of ornamental trees and shrubs. The 45-acre site was designated the South Dakota State Arboretum in 1988. Perhaps South Dakota State’s most recognizable landmark is the 165-foot Coughlin Campanile, the state’s largest chimes tower. A climb of 179 steps leads to a panoramic view of the city. The statuesque structure on the west end of campus was a $65,000 gift from 1909 engineering graduate Charles Coughlin, who later went on to become head of the Briggs & Stratton Corporation. Coughlin laid the campanile’s cornerstone on June 10, 1929. Since then, its chimes have called students to classes with the famous Westminster peals. An alumni-sponsored project to restore the campanile was completed in the summer of 2001. Adjacent to the campanile, Coolidge-Sylvan Theatre has provided a restful, green haven for students since its dedication by President Calvin Coolidge in September 1927. Over the years the outdoor amphiteater has

been the site of concerts, graduations and inaugurations for university presidents. Woodbine Cottage, the home of the university president, is a charming example of Queen Anne architecture. Built in 1887 by South Dakota Agricultural College’s second president, Dr. Lewis McLouth, the home is crowned by multiple roof lines. The house also has served as a women’s dormitory, music hall and infirmary. STATE’S LARGEST LIBRARY The Hilton M. Briggs Library, the state’s largest, was opened in 1977 and joined South Dakota’s statewide automated library network in 1988. Through the library, users have access to holdings from all 10 of the state’s libraries, including official documents and more than 1 million other holdings at Briggs. THE BROOKINGS COMMUNITY Today, Brookings is a growing community of about 22,000 people. Located 20 miles west of the Minnesota border and 50 miles north of Sioux Falls in east-central South Dakota, Brookings is situated at the intersection of U.S. Highway 14 and Interstate 29. The community also is home to several recognizable companies including Rainbow Play Systems, Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing (3M), Larson Manufacturing, and Daktronics, a leading manufacturer of scoreboards and display systems.
