SOUTH DAKOTA STATE South Dakota State University Athletics South Dakota State University sponsors 21 varsity sports that compete at the NCAA Division I level. Eighteen teams compete in the Summit League while the football program competes in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision Missouri Valley Football Conference. The wrestling team competes in the Western Wrestling Conference while the equestrian program does not have conference affiliation. Legend of the Jackrabbit There are two theories as to how and why the Jackrabbit nickname evolved. The most common belief is that the name “Jackrabbits” came from a story and cartoon sketch that appeared in a Minneapolis newspaper following a 1905 football game between the University of Minnesota and South Dakota State College, as the university was then known. A reporter for the newspaper, knowing of the preponderance of jackrabbits in the Brookings area, was believed to have written that the SDSC team was as quick as jackrabbits. Many people believe that the school adopted the Jackrabbits as its official nickname from that beginning. The other theory about the origin of the nickname is given in The Jackrabbit, SDSU’s yearbook. There is a poem in the 1907 yearbook that puts forth the idea that the yearbook is called The Jackrabbit because a group of juniors wished to immortalize them- selves by changing the name of the yearbook. Athletic teams followed suit, adopting the nickname. Prior to the adoption of the Jackrabbit nickname, school athletic teams were known as the Barn Yard Cadets as SDSU was known as South Dakota State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1907.

Research and Economic Development Research has been an essential part of the university’s mission since passage of the 1887 Hatch Act, which established state agricultural experiment stations. SDSU has the most active research program in the state with nearly $70 million in research expenditures, and in 2006 the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching designated SDSU as South Dakota’s first High Research Activity institution. In addition to 42 graduate programs offered in six colleges, undergraduates also have research opportunities led by innovative faculty in renewable energy, food, health sciences, engineering and nursing, as well as with programs like the Sun Grant Initiative and the Geographic Information Science Center of Excellence. SDSU currently is home to three statefunded Governor’s Research Centers: the Center for Biological Control and Analysis by Applied Photonics, and the Drought Tolerance and Translational Cancer Research centers. SDSU researchers also participate in two other Governor’s Research Centers focused on materials and manufacturing at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. In addition, SDSU is the lead for the multi-institution South Dakota Research Innovation Center: the Biochemical Spatiotemporal Network Resource Center. The Technology Transfer Office, which assists SDSU researchers in commercializing intellectual properties and fosters collaborations between the university and industry partners, has generated some $1.8 million in royalties annually since 2010 via an average of 178 total agreements each year, including invention disclosures, patents filed and agreements with start-ups. Industry partnerships through the Research Park at South Dakota State enable technology transfer and stimulate economic development for the state.

Briggs Library serves students, faculty, staff and the broader South Dakota community through its holdings of more than one million items, 32,000 online journals, 18,000 electronic books, and 80,000 maps. The library has served as a depository for federal documents since 1889. The archives and special collections encompass 7,500 linear feet of materials and 1,675 digitized items. The Senator Thomas A. Daschle Congressional Research Study allows for public access to the career papers of Senator Daschle, a 1969 SDSU

graduate. Located within the Special Collections area on the upper level of the Hilton M. Briggs Library, the papers consist of more than 2,000 linear feet of materials that document the senator’s 26- year career in the U.S. House and Senate from 1979 to 2004. The American Indian Education and Cultural Center at SDSU is the nexus of cultural programming, services and advocacy to support American Indian students, encourage appreciation of cultural and human differences and advocate for the inclusion of Indigenous knowledge.

South Dakota State University is the state’s Morrill Act land-grant university and its largest, most comprehensive institution of higher education. It has an enrollment of 12,557 students from all 50 states and 70 countries who can choose from more than 175 majors, minors and specializations. The institution also offers 29 master’s degree programs, 13 Ph.D. and two professional programs. SDSU has grown from 80 acres at its founding in 1881 to a 422-acre campus with facilities valued at more than $381 million. The university owns or leases another 15,000 acres of land for research throughout the state. The university provides a rich academic experience in an environment of inclusion and access through inspired, student-centered education, creative activities and research, innovation and engagement that improve the quality of life in South Dakota, the region, the nation and the world. SDSU confers degrees through six colleges: Agriculture and Biological Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Education and Human Sciences, the Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering, Nursing and Pharmacy, as well as the Graduate School. Qualified students may enroll in the Van D. and Barbara B. Fishback Honors College. The Office of Continuing and Distance Education facilitates distance de- livery of credit and noncredit programming, and University Centers in Sioux Falls, Pierre and Rapid City offer degree programs and student support services comparable to those offered on the Brookings campus. SDSU Extension and the Agricultural Experiment Station reach all parts of the state. The federally funded North Central Regional Sun Grant Center (focused on developing biobased energy alternatives) and the North Central Agricultural Research Laboratory (the only USDA Agricultural Research Service facility in the state), along with the Northern Plains Biostress Laboratory, the Water and Environmental Engineering Re- search Center, the Animal Disease Research and Diagnostic Laboratory and the Northeast Research Center near South Shore demonstrate the university’s commitment to purpose-driven research and that supports economic development.

The South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum transformed the former Stock Judging Pavilion into a home for exhibits that record and preserve the agrarian heritage of South Dakota. Visitors attend the museum from all 50 states and many foreign countries. McCrory Gardens provides a beautiful setting to learn about ornamental plants adapted to the Northern Great Plains. THE SUMMIT LEAGUE THE SUMMIT LEAGUE In its fourth decade of Division I athletics, The Summit League offers 19 championship sports and has a combined enrollment of over 120,000 at nine institutions, including four located in top 60 U.S. metro populations and two land-grant universities. Member institutions include: Denver (University of Denver), Fort Wayne (Indiana UniversityPurdue University-Fort Wayne), IUPUI (Indiana University-Purdue UniversityIndianapolis), North Dakota State University, Omaha (University of Nebraska Omaha), Oral Roberts University, the University of South Dakota, South Dakota State University and Western Illinois University. Previously known as the Mid-Continent Conference, The Summit League rebranded in 2007 and has since produced eight NCAA Champions, and over 75 Academic All-Americans, 65 All-America selections and numerous former student-athletes competing at the highest professional level.

• The Summit League set all-time highs in 2014-15 with 23 teams recording perfect NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores and 25 teams publicly recognized for posting multi-year APRs in the top 10 percent of their respective sports. A total of nine Academic All-Americans and 19 Academic All-District honorees hailed from The Summit League last season. • Summit League women’s basketball led all Division I leagues in the NCAA’s Graduation Success Rate measure while baseball placed second. • Attendance at The Summit League Basketball Championships smashed 11 records, including new standards for both the men’s and women’s tournaments and the overall combined total. • Six Summit League teams attained national rankings in their respective sports last season, led by North Dakota State’s softball team, which ended the year in the Top 25.

Those achievements came on the heels of recent prestigious individual academic honors such as the Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship, Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association Scholar-Athlete of the Years and Capital One Academic All-America of the Year awarded to Summit League studentathletes. The Summit League also produces the highest quality in competition as evidenced by representation in the National Basketball Association (NBA), Major League Baseball (MLB), Major League Soccer (MLS), Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) and Professional Golf Association (PGA) in 2015.

Since being named head coach in 2011, Michael Engdahl has led both South Dakota State tennis teams to unprecedented success. Under Engdahl, both squads earned their first Summit League Tournament berths and set Division I single-season records for dual victories. He coached the first Jackrabbit to advance to the round of 32 at an ITA Regional. In Engdahl’s first season, the men’s team qualified for its first Summit League Tournament after finishing fourth in league play with a 2-3 record. The Jackrabbit men built on that success during the 2012-13 campaign, going 4-1 in Summit League play en route to a second-place finish, the highest in program history. For his efforts, Engdahl was named the Summit League Men’s Tennis Coach of the Year. That season, the Jackrabbit women reached the double digits in victories for the first time since transitioning to the Division I level, posting a 16-10 record. They also made their first Summit League Tournament appearance after placing third in the league with a 5-2 record. Ffion Davies, who went 17-5 in singles play, became the first Jackrabbit on either team to be named Summit League Newcomer of the Year. In 2013-14, both teams set Division I single-season records for dual victories, as the men finished 16-8 and the women went 18-8. The Jackrabbit women posted their best finish in Summit League play, going 5-1 in league play to enter the Summit League Tournament as the second seed. At the Summit League Tennis Championships, Iasmin Rosa and Parker Lawley became the first Jackrabbits to win a point, each dispatching their opponent in straight sets. For leading the women’s team to a record-setting season, Engdahl took home Summit league Women’s Coach of the Year honors. The Jackrabbits opened the 2014-15 campaign on a high note when Rosa became the first Jackrabbit to advance to the round of 32 at the ITA Central Regional. Both teams enjoyed solid dual seasons, as the men went 14-10 (3-3 SL) and the women went 15-8 (5-2 SL), entering the Summit League Championships as the fourth and third seeds. There, the women’s team advanced to the finals for the first time in program history. After dispatching fifth-seeded Oral Roberts, 4-0, in the first round, the Jackrabbits upset second-seeded Fort Wayne on its home court, 4-2. South Dakota State ultimately fell to top-seeded and defending champion Denver, 4-0, in the finals. In his first four years, Engdahl coached eight players to 12 All-Summit League nods. His players have also consistently set high marks in the classroom, with the team boasting a perfect Academic Progress Rate and a GPA above 3.3 each season. In addition, four Jackrabbits earned spots on the Summit League Academic All-League team while, in 2015, Lawley became the first South Dakota State tennis player to be named to the Capital One Academic All-District 6 Men’s At-Large Team. In addition to coaching at South Dakota State, Engdahl spent time as the director and head tennis instructor for Michael Engdahl Tennis, which he founded in 2006. He also worked as the director and head tennis instructor at the St. Cloud Country Club in St. Cloud, Minn. from 2005-11. Before starting his own program, Engdahl was heavily involved in coaching and teaching at all levels. This included duties such as a teaching Sartell High School in Sartell, Minn. from 2005-06. A 2008 graduate of South Dakota State, Engdahl played first singles and first double as a senior captain. Before transferring to South Dakota State, he competed at St. Cloud State from 2004-06. Chuck Provencio joined the Jackrabbit tennis staff in January 2014 as a graduate assistant coach pursuing a master’s degree in sport and recreation management. He came to Brookings from his hometown of Bakersfield, Calif., where he started his tennis coaching career. In 2014, both squads set Division I single-season records for dual victories, as the men finished 16-8 and the women went 18-8. In 2015, the men (1410) and women (15-8) both enjoyed winning seasons. The women’s team also advanced to the Summit League Tournament finals for the first time in program history, ultimately falling to top-seeded Denver, 4-0. During his two years on staff, Provencio has helped guide four players to six berths on the all-Summit League team. Now in his seventh year as a USPTA certified teaching professional, Provencio coached the 2012 Junior World Team Tennis squad from Kern County, which won the California state title and then moved on to place in the top 10 at the national playoffs in San Diego, Calif. Provencio then became the assistant coach at Bakersfield College, where he helped lead players on the team to the state tournament with results placing as high as fourth in the individual rankings.The BC team also posted wins over some of California’s top junior colleges, including L.A. Pierce, Sierra, Glendale, College of the Sequoias, Reedly and Fresno City College. A 2010 graduate of CSU Bakersfield with a degree in physical education and kinesiology, Provencio hopes to study athletic administration after he graduates from South Dakota State.

Alex Jardine joined the Jackrabbit sports performance staff as a graduate assistant in May 2014 after serving as an intern in the sports performance department at the University of Colorado since September of 2012. Jardine’s main responsibilities include the program design and implementation for the Jackrabbit tennis, equestrian and cheer teams. He also assists with the remaining varsity sports. At Colorado, Jardine worked under director of basketball sports performance James Hardy and assistant director of sports performance Chris Sheckler, assisting with program implementation for men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball and lacrosse. Jardine received his B.A. in Integrated Physiology from the University of Colorado with an emphasis in Exercise Science in May of 2012 and subsequently began pursuit of a Master’s Degree in Exercise, Nutrition and Food Sciences at South Dakota State. Jardine is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the NSCA and a USA Weightlifting Sports Performance Coach. He also holds a certification from the American Red Cross in CPR/AED.

Nathan Moe enters his fourth year as the assistant athletic director for strength and conditioning after joining the South Dakota State staff as the head strength and conditioning coach in August 2005. Moe works directly with the Jackrabbit volleyball and football teams and oversees the design and implementation of the year-round strength and conditioning programs for the 21 Jackrabbits varsity sports. Before joining the SDSU staff, Moe led the strength and conditioning program at Eastern Illinois University for three years, overseeing the design and implementation of strength and conditioning programs for its 22 varsity sports. Before he worked at Eastern Illinois, Moe was the assistant strength and conditioning coach at Rice University, working with the Owls’ football, men’s and women’s track, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s swimming, women’s soccer and men’s golf teams. From 1997 through the spring of 1999, Moe was the graduate assistant in the strength and conditioning program at the University of Texas, earning a M.Ed. in exercise physiology. He also worked in private business in physical fitness in Austin and Houston, Texas and in Fargo, N.D. A Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and a USA Weightlifting Certified Club Coach, Moe also maintains certifications in the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association. In 2012, the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association honored Moe as a Master Strength and Conditioning Coach. A Minnesota native, Moe graduated from Moorhead State University in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science. He also earned all-conference honors as a linebacker for the 1995 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference champion Dragons. Moe and his wife, Colleen, live in Brookings with their son, Zachary, and daughter, Kylie.

Ben Heinze came to South Dakota State as an athletic trainer 2003 and worked with the Jackrabbit women’s basketball and football teams before making the move to the soccer team in 2011. A La Crescent, Minn., native, Heinze earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Winona State University (Minn.) in 1998, and then moved on to South Dakota State, where he added a master’s degree in athletic training in 2000. After completing his master’s degree, Heinze spent two and a half years as the head athletic trainer at Franklin College (Ind.) and worked at an athletic training clinic. He returned to South Dakota State during the 2003-04 school year, working primarily with the Jackrabbit women’s basketball program. For the past five years, Heinze worked closely with the SDSU football team. He oversaw the sports medicine facilities at the Dykhouse Student-Athlete Center for the last two years before joining the soccer team.

David Kragness joined the South Dakota State staff in 2009 as an assistant athletic trainer, where he works primarily with the Jackrabbit women’s basketball team. Before he came to Brookings, Kragness spent a year as an assistant athletic trainer at Winona State University in Winona, Minn., where he worked with the Warriors’ men’s basketball and track and field teams. A 2005 graduate of Minnesota State University, Mankato, Kragness worked as the head athletic trainer for the Minnesota Swarm professional indoor lacrosse team for a year after earning a bachelor of science degree in athletic training. Following his time at MSU, the Barron, Wis., native earned a master of science degree in kinesiology from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, where he served at the athletic trainer for the women’s volleyball team. In addition to his degrees, Kragness holds certifications through the National Academy of Sports Medicine as a performance enhancement specialist and a corrective exercise specialist.

Justin Sell, who was honored as a recipient of the 2014-15 Under Armour Athletics Director of the Year Award, has moved Jackrabbit Athletics forward in a number of areas of its Division I pursuits since being introduced as the 12th director of athletics at South Dakota State University May 7, 2009. At South Dakota State, Sell oversees the 21-sport Division I varsity athletics program. Under his leadership, the Jackrabbits have made strides in athletic competition, in the classroom, in fundraising and in reconnecting with alumni. Athletically, the Jackrabbits have claimed 22 regular and postseason league championships in six different sports since 2009-10. That broad-based success has led SDSU to claim The Summit League Commissioner’s Cup all-sports trophy four times (2010-11, 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15), along with winning both the Summit League’s Dr. William Steinbrecher Men’s All-Sports Award and Dr. Helen Smiley Women’s All-Sports Award during both the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons. SDSU also claimed the Steinbrecher award during the 2012-13 season and was the recipient of the league’s Sportsmanship Award, an award voted upon by its peers, during the 2010-11 campaign. In the classroom, Jackrabbit student-athletes continually post a grade-point average of 3.2 or higher in more than 70 different majors, which led SDSU to winning The Summit League’s Institutional Academic Achievement Award for the 2009-10 and 2012-13 academic years, and the MissouriValley Football Conference Academic Award in all six years in the league (2008-13). Sell also directed the implementation of the Letterwinners Club, which provides opportunities for Jackrabbit Athletics to reconnect and stay connected with former student-athletes, while supporting current student-athletes at South Dakota State. Sell also has implemented other aggressive marketing and fundraising initiatives which have resulted in record average attendance for football during the 2009 season, as well as the highest number of donors and dollars donated to the Jackrabbit Club.Ticket sales totaled more than $1 million for the first time during the 2011-12 academic year, and was surpassed again during the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons. In addition, the Jackrabbit Athletic Scholarship Auction raised a record $603,000 in April 2015. On the facilities front, Sell has overseen dramatic upgrades and expansion of competition and practice venues through development and implementation of the 2025 SDSU Athletic Facilities Master Plan. The Dykhouse Student-Athlete Center was completed in 2010, and Sell spearheaded efforts to add permanent seating and a press box at Erv Huether Field. More recently, construction of the $32 million Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex was completed in the fall of 2014.The facility, which serves as a competition venue for indoor track and field and as a practice facility for football and a number of other outdoor sports, contains one of only a handful of 300-meter indoor tracks in the country. In addition, work is under way for the construction of the $65 million Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium, which will serve as the new home of Jackrabbit football. The 19,000-seat stadium is scheduled to open in the fall of 2016. In the fall of 2014, Sell was appointed by the NCAA Board of Directors to represent The Summit League and Missouri Valley Football Conference on the newly formed Division I Council. Born in Salem, Ore., and raised in Columbus, Ohio, Sell came to South Dakota State from the Northern Iowa, where he worked in various roles, both at the university and in the community for 10 years. He also worked atVillanova, Syracuse, Ohio State and Bowling Green. Sell gained further experience working in the private sector for various sports teams and events. In the Brookings community, where Sell lives with his wife, Jennie, and their four children Abbie, Zach, Josh and Eric, he serves as vice president of the Brookings Chamber of Commerce, vice president for the Brookings Friends of Baseball and is a member of the Brookings Health System Board of Trustees. Sell earned his bachelor’s degree in sport management from Bowling Green State University (Ohio) in 1991 and completed a master’s degree in physical education/sport administration at The Ohio State University in 1992.

David L. Chicoine, Ph.D., has served as the 19th president of South Dakota State University since Jan. 1, 2007, when he became the third alumnus to lead the state’s largest institution of higher education. President Chicoine, who graduated in 1969 with a bachelor of science degree in agribusiness, also holds an appointment as professor in the Department of Economics. President Chicoine has a long association with intercollegiate athletics, including serving on the NCAA Presidential Advisory Group. Chicoine also chaired the President’s Council for The Summit League during the 2011-12 academic year. Previously, he served as the faculty representative to the Big Ten Conference and the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) for the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He served as chair of the Budget and Finance Committee for the Big Ten Conference for nine years of his 11-year term. In the spring of 2013, Chicoine and his executive team rolled out IMPACT 2018: A Strategic Vision for South Dakota State University.The five-year plan features four main goals: academic excellence, research and innovation, outreach and becoming a high-performing University. During his tenure, enrollment has reached record levels of undergraduate students and Ph.D. candidates. Correspondingly, the amount of research grants and contract awards has jumped nearly 90 percent during that time. To support the plan, the SDSU Foundation in 2008 launched an aggressive fundraising effort: “It Starts with State: A Campaign for South Dakota State University.” It began with a goal of $200 million, but exceeded that to a total of more than $255 million with contributions from more than 23,000 donors. The most visible support for the campaign can be seen in several construction and renovation projects funded by generous donors, all part of the largest campus building boom since the 1960s.The majority of the facilities enhance the university’s research capabilities and allow for new discoveries that drive technology-based economic development in South Dakota. In January 2014, Chicoine was presented with the 2013-14 Chief Executive Leadership Award by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District VI. The award recognizes the leadership of a higher education chief executive officer who demonstrates the ability to create a vision and inspire others. Building a better academic model has also been part of President Chicoine’s agenda. In the fall of 2010, SDSU launched the state’s first architecture program through its College of Arts and Sciences. The Chicoine administration also developed the new College of Education and Human Sciences in 2009, a merger of the former College of Education and Counseling, College of Family and Consumer Sciences and the Department of Health and Physical Education. It represented the first significant academic restructuring in more than 40 years. Dr. Chicoine brought more than 30 years of experience in higher education with the University of Illinois to his role as president of SDSU. A nationally recognized economist, specializing in public finance, taxation, and rural economics, Chicoine served as an advisor to the Illinois General Assembly. His higher education administrative experience includes service as Head of the Department of Agricultural Economics and Dean of the College of Agriculture, Consumer and Environmental Sciences, at the University of Illinois. The co-author of four books and author of more than 100 invited and/or peer reviewed academic journal articles, Chicoine also served as a member of the Illinois Governor’s Council of Economic Advisors, and was a member of the board of the Illinois State Treasurer’s Technology Development Fund. Chicoine received an M.S. in agricultural economics from Delaware in 1971, and completed an M.A. in economics at Western Illinois. In 1979, he completed his Ph.D. in agricultural economics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Chicoine and his wife, Marcia, live in Woodbine Cottage on the SDSU campus. Their family includes son, Joshua, a Chicago-based musician; daughter-in-law Laura Ellsworth; granddaughter Sylvie; grandson Watson, and their late son, Jason.

Ed Posaski joined the South Dakota State staff in August 2012 as the assistant athletic director for budget after two years as the associate athletic director for business and finance at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Among his many responsibilities, Posaski serves as the sport supervisor for the Jackrabbit men’s and women’s tennis teams. A Freehold, N.J., native, Posaski started at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in 2006 as the assistant athletic director for marketing and promotions and worked in that position for a year before being promoted to assistant athletic director for business in 2007, a position he held until 2010 when he earned the promotion to associate AD for business and finance. Before joining the staff in Corpus Christi, Posaski worked as the director of marketing at Radford University in Radford, Va., for three years. He also worked as the director of marketing and promotions at the College of William and Mary from 2000-02 and as the assistant athletic director for external affairs at Western Carolina University from 1999-2000. A 1996 graduate of Bowling Green State University with a degree in sport management enterprise, Posaski went on to earn a master’s degree in sport management from Morehead State University in 1998.

Kathy Heylens came to South Dakota State in July 1984 as an admissions office staff member before moving to the athletics department two years later as a senior secretary. Heylens became the institution’s first full-time Compliance Coordinator in 1990 and continues those duties as the associate athletic director for compliance and senior woman administrator. Heylens manages all aspects of the athletics compliance program to ensure strict adherence with NCAA, affiliated conferences and university rules and regulations for amateurism, eligibility, recruiting, financial aid, awards and benefits, playing and practice seasons and enforcement. As the SWA, she helps to create an environment where staff and student-athletes can achieve their goals. Heylens recently accepted an appointment of a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Legislative Council, which serves as the primary legislative body in the Division I governance structure. She also accepted an appointment to the four-member Legislative Council Administrative Committee, which acts on behalf of the full Legislative Council between meetings to transact routine items of business. She also serves on the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision Governance Committee. In addition to her day-to-day duties, Heylens serves on the Undergraduate Experience Committee, Diversity Committee, Intercollegiate Athletics Board and Compliance Team. She also volunteers in the community as co-chair of the Brookings Food Pantry and serves as a member of the Brookings Committee for People With Disabilities. A Watertown, S.D., native, she enjoys reading, spending time at the lake and cheering on the Jacks.
