ROD DeHAVEN

Head Coach / 13th Season / South Dakota State (1986)

Entering his 13th season leading the cross country program, Rod DeHaven has steered the Jackrabbits towards success on the course and in the classroom. DeHaven led the charge as the athletics program moved up from Division II to Division I. During his tenure, the men’s and women’s teams have combined to capture five league championships in cross country. The men have claimed four league titles under DeHaven and have finished either first or second in The Summit League each year since 2012. Overall, the men’s program has won 34 league championships dating back to 1924. The women’s team won The Summit League crown in 2008, which was its 10th title in program history and first under DeHaven’s guidance. DeHaven has coached five individual league champions, the latest being Trent Lusignan, who won The Summit League title in 2015 and was named the league’s athlete of the year. In 2015, Lusignan and Joel Reichow both earned all-American honors, becoming the first pair of teammates to do so in a single season in school history. Lusignan also ran to a 12th-place finish at the 2013 NCAA cross country championships, becoming the school’s first Division I cross country all-American since 1973.

earn that same distinction in 2009. During the past five years, every men’s and women’s cross country and track and field team have earned recognition as an All-Academic Team from the United States Track and Field Coaches Association. The women’s cross country team has routinely ranked as a top-10 team among all NCAA Division I institutions for its work academically, including a tie for fourth place in 2008. During his four years of cross country competition, DeHaven claimed four North Central Conference individual championships and four top-10 finishes at the NCAA Division II national meet. With DeHaven leading the pack, SDSU captured four conference team championships and the 1985 NCAA Division II National Championship. The most decorated runner in SDSU history, he won a combined 19 individual North Central Conference titles in cross country and track and field and earned all-America honors 15 times in distance running. Following his collegiate career, DeHaven continued to compete on the national and international scene. In 1994, he debuted in marathon competition, posting a time of 2:14:48 at the Twin Cities Marathon. The following year DeHaven established his personal bests at 5,000 (13:40) and 10,000-meters (28:06), finishing fourth at the U.S. Championships at 10,000-meters. He represented the United States in the marathon at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. Illness slowed DeHaven to a 69th place finish at the Sydney Olympic Games, but he came back in 2001 to finish sixth in the Boston Marathon (2:12:41) and sixth at the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon (2:11:40). DeHaven was inducted into the Jackrabbit Sports Hall of Fame in 2014.

DeHaven has coached 32 athletes to earn All-Summit League cross country honors 56 times since the Jackrabbits joined The Summit League in 2007. SDSU student-athletes have also succeeded academically under DeHaven. In 2005, Brad Lowery was awarded the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship for his achievements as a physics major. In 2007, Becka Mansheim was awarded a NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship for her work as a nursing major. Stacy Huss became the latest Jackrabbit to

Emily Paull joined the cross country and track and field programs as a graduate assistant coach in August of 2016.

multiple times. Overall, she graduated from Aurora University with 13 school records and 13 Northern Athletic Conference records.

Prior to accepting the graduate assistant role with SDSU, Paull competed in both cross country and track and field for the previous four years at Aurora University in Aurora, Illinois. She helped lead the team to three consecutive indoor conference championships and back-toback outdoor and cross country conference championships before graduating in May of 2016.

In her time at Aurora, Paull also excelled in the classroom. She majored in health science and minored in coaching and physiology, graduating as a five-time USTFCCCA Academic All-American and CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-American. She also took on an assistant coaching role under head coach Ryan Chapman during her final semester. She assisted in the recruiting process and coached mainly distance events.

Paull, a two-time all-American in the Steeplechase, earned conference Track Athlete of the Meet and Runner of the Year in cross country

JACKRABBIT MEN are going to have to step up for the team to reach its goals. “Our key again this fall will be our four and five runners. At worst, our first three guys will be rock solid, and if they are, that’s good, but cross country is definitely a sport where as much as it is individual, if you don’t have a four, if you have a horrible fifth, who cares how good your first is. So, it’s the old proverbial, you’re only as strong as your weakest link.” SDSU has a competitive roster for the final two spots in their top five. Kyle Burdick made strides in 2015 as a redshirt freshman, and DeHaven thinks that he could play an important role in 2016. “He was a redshirt freshman and had a really good year last year. I think he’s someone that will obviously be in that top five as well. So, I feel good about where he’s at.”

2016 Men’s Preview The 2015 South Dakota State men’s cross country season was both historically good, while simultaneously somewhat disappointing. “Well, it was a good year,” 13th-year head coach Rodney DeHaven said, “You know, probably disappointing though not winning the conference meet, losing by three or four points or whatever we lost by. To finish 1-2-3 and still get beat it was tough, and to have it happen at home it was tough.” SDSU entered The Summit League Championship feeling that they were the team to beat, especially on their home course. They had individual finishers 1-2-3, the first team to do that since 2006, but did not win the race, finishing second by four points to IUPUI. On the bright side, the Jackrabbits rebounded and had their best-ever finish at the NCAA Midwest Regional and had two Division-I all-Americans in the same season for the first time in school history. “The guys bounced back really well at regionals. To be within 30 points of a national qualifying spot was remarkable. Literally, it comes down to 40 seconds. Eight seconds a guy over six miles is not a lot.” Trent Lusignan and Joel Reichow then raced their way to all-American accolades at the NCAA Championships to finish the season.

SDSU was able to redshirt their entire freshman class from a season ago, something that bodes well for them in 2016 and beyond. Chase Cayo, Lukas Nelson, and Chandler Klawitter could all help the overall strength of the team in their redshirt freshman seasons, and DeHaven thinks that incoming freshmen Micah Mather could make an impact this season. “He was the runner-up in Minnesota in Class 2A, and largely looks like somebody that could be an all-league performer. You never know how guys are going to adapt from high school to college. He’s going from running 5k’s in high school to the college 8k distance. If we bring him along in a smart manner he is somebody who could be very good.” Overall, the Jackrabbits look like they are in a good spot to compete for the 2016 Summit League title and beyond. “Obviously, the rival will be IUPUI. They return a ton of guys and are very talented and very determined and it won’t be easy,” DeHaven said, “A lot depends on really what the guys have done this summer. Certainly, we monitor them. They need to really have a good month of August here. And you know, be smart once school starts to even be within shouting distance of those schools that we need to jump over. Our region is going to be very tough. There are going to be six teams ranked in the top 30.” The Jackrabbits look poised to have a memorable 2016 season, but it’s not going to be a walk in the park.

“To have those two guys be all-Americans, that was a tremendous accomplishment and puts us in with less than a handful of schools that were able to do that. The things that we looked at were the entire Big 10 Conference had one all-American, we had two. The entire Big 12 Conference had one all-American, we had two.” SDSU loses Lusignan, who was the top Jackrabbit finisher in seven of eight races. The Jacks, however, have plenty of reasons for optimism entering the 2016 season. Trevor Capra, Reichow and Brendan Sage return for their senior seasons with plenty of success and experience under their belts. The three harriers scored for the Jackrabbits in each meet they competed in last season, and all were a part of the 2013 Summit League Championahip squad. DeHaven is confident in the trio of seniors, but knows that others 4

JACKRABBIT WOMEN

2016 Women’s Preview In 2015, the South Dakota State women’s cross country team seemingly improved each week. They fell just short of a Summit League title, finishing second to South Dakota. Five women earned all-league honors, including three returners for the 2016 season. “Well, for the women, it wasn’t an easy season, but in the same sense it was a season with nice progression and I think we had a decent chance to challenge USD for the conference meet,” 13thyear head coach Rodney DeHaven said, “We had some young people step up and those young people will be the foundation of our team this fall.” The women followed up their second-place finish at The Summit League Championships finishing 17th at the NCAA Midwest Regional. The Jacks will have a young core for the 2016 season, the preseason roster features two seniors, two juniors, eight sophomores and nine freshmen. Junior Halie Mechels, and sophomores Rachel King and Emily Donnay will look to build on breakout seasons, after all three earned all-league honors in 2015. Jenna Grossenburg will provide senior leadership to the team after redshirting in 2015. “We’ll get Jenna back, who was an all-league performer [in 2013]. It has been a while, but when she’s on, she can be very good.”

16

The return of Grossenburg, mixed with the emergence of some underclassmen will be the key to success in 2016 for the Jackrabbits. “A couple of other sophomores that I think made some progressions through the year are Emily Berzonsky and Rachel Propst, who could definitely make a difference for us as well,” DeHaven said. As for freshman making an impact on the 2016 season, DeHaven feels that it is well within the realm of possibilities. “We think there are three pretty decent incoming freshmen. The adaptation isn’t as much for the women because it’s just a kilometer more [than what they ran in high school], so Jamie Schweiss, Kendra Dykstra and Savannah Woods, who was the South Dakota state cross country champion [could have an impact].” The Summit League figures to be a deep league in 2016, but the Jackrabbits like their foundation. “The good thing is that we will pretty much have everyone back on the women’s side for the next several years, but they’ve got to get better and obviously the league is very good. No one is going to stand pat, and IUPUI’s women will probably be in the mix to win this year, as well as USD, NDSU. It will be a very, very tight team race.”

WELCOME TO SOUTH DAKOTA STATE UNIVERSITY

STATE UNIVERSITY Legend of the Jackrabbit

There are two theories as to how and why the Jackrabbit nickname evolved. The most common belief is that the name “Jackrabbits” came from a story and cartoon sketch that appeared in a Minneapolis newspaper following a 1905 football game between the University of Minnesota and South Dakota State College, as the university was then known. A reporter for the newspaper, knowing of the preponderance of jackrabbits in the Brookings area, was believed to have written that the SDSC team was as quick as jackrabbits. Many people believe that the school adopted the Jackrabbits as its official nickname from that beginning. The other theory about the origin of the nickname is given in The Jackrabbit, SDSU’s yearbook. There is a poem in the 1907 yearbook that puts forth the idea that the yearbook is called The Jackrabbit because a group of juniors wished to immortalize themselves by changing the name of the yearbook. Athletic teams followed suit, adopting the nickname. Prior to the adoption of the Jackrabbit nickname, school athletic teams were known as the Barn Yard Cadets as SDSU was known as South Dakota State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1907. 30 Coaching Staff—Jackrabbit Men—Jackrabbit Women—History—Summit—SDSU

SDSU PRESIDENT BARRY H. DUNN

President / First Year / South Dakota State (1975)

Barry H. Dunn was named the 20th president of South Dakota State University in April 2016, the fourth alumnus chosen to lead the institution. He took office in May 2016. Dunn received a bachelor’s degree in biology at SDSU in 1975 and subsequently completed two graduate degrees in animal science—a master’s in 1977 and a Ph.D. in in 2000—at the Brookings campus. He became the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council endowed dean of the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences in 2010. He also served as director of SDSU Extension and as a professor of animal science. As dean, Dunn led a college with some 550 faculty and staff, 2,800 graduate and undergraduate students, and a $78 million annual budget, including more than $20 million in grant and contract awards, fundraising and development. He shaped the academic and strategic direction of eight departments, spanning 18 degree programs, one regional research and outreach center, six research field stations and 14,500 acres of Agricultural Experiment Station research land. As Extension director, Dunn administered and set the vision for five program areas across two colleges and nine departments, as well as eight regional extension centers with a $12 million annual budget. He led a team of some 150 faculty and staff members and 3,500 adult volunteers.

Prior to that, Dunn spent six years at Texas A&M UniversityKingsville from 2004 to 2010, as executive director of the King Ranch Institute for Range Management. He first worked in Brookings as an Extension livestock specialist and as an assistant professor in SDSU’s Department of Animal and Range Science from 1997 to 2004. From 1979 to 1996, Dunn was a successful rancher, managing his family’s cattle ranch in Mission. In 2015, he was appointed to the South Dakota Habitat Conservation Fund by Gov. Dennis Daugaard, and to the Governor’s Pheasant Work Group in 2014. He served as an ex officio member of the ag advisory board for the First Dakota National Bank, Yankton from 2011 to 2016, and was a member of the board of directors for Padlock Ranch, Dayton, Wyoming, from 2009 to 2016. Dunn has a rich academic background, was a successful rancher and farm operator and is a published author and researcher. He is a nationally recognized expert in beef production and ranching systems, and is a member of several professional organizations, including the Society for Range Management, the American Society of Animal Science, and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association. He has a deep historical and cultural knowledge of South Dakota and South Dakota State University, and strong, statewide relationships with industry influencers and stakeholders, including government officials, business leaders, university administration, faculty and staff. He lives with his wife, Jane Dunn, on her family’s original homestead north of Brookings, where they raised their two sons, Thomas and Michael.

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR JUSTIN SELL

Director of Athletics / Eighth Year / Bowling Green (1991)

Justin Sell, who was honored as a recipient of the 2014-15 Under Armour Athletics Director of the Year Award, has moved Jackrabbit athletics forward in a number of areas of its Division I pursuits since being introduced as the 12th director of athletics at South Dakota State University May 7, 2009. At South Dakota State, Sell oversees the Jackrabbits’ 21-sport Division I varsity athletics program. Under his leadership, Jackrabbit athletics has continually made strides in athletic competition, in the classroom, in fundraising and in reconnecting with alumni. Athletically, the Jackrabbits have claimed 22 regular and postseason league championships in six different sports since 2009-10. That broadbased success has led SDSU to claimThe Summit League Commissioner’s Cup all-sports trophy four times (2010-11, 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15), along with winning both the Summit League’s Dr. William Steinbrecher Men’s All-Sports Award and Dr. Helen Smiley Women’s All-Sports Award during both the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons. SDSU also claimed the Steinbrecher award during the 2012-13 season and was the recipient of the league’s Sportsmanship Award, an award voted upon by its peers, during the 2010-11 campaign. In the classroom, Jackrabbit student-athletes continually post a GPA of 3.2 or higher in more than 70 different majors, which led SDSU to winning The Summit League’s Institutional Academic Achievement Award for the 2009-10 and 2012-13 academic years, and the Missouri Valley Football Conference Academic Award in all seven years in the league (2008-14). In January 2011, Sell announced a partnership with Learfield Sports, signing a 10-year deal worth $13 million for SDSU Athletics. Learfield Sports directs all aspects of the partnership, including managing and selling multimedia and sponsorship rights. Additionally, Sell directed the implementation of the Letterwinners Club, which provides opportunities for Jackrabbit Athletics to reconnect and stay connected with former student-athletes, while supporting current student-athletes. Sell also has implemented other aggressive marketing and fundraising initiatives which have resulted in record average attendance for football during the 2009 season, as well as the highest number of donors and dollars donated to the Jackrabbit Club. Ticket sales totaled more than $1 million for the first time during the 2011-12 academic year, and was surpassed again during the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons. In addition, the Jackrabbit Athletic Scholarship Auction raised a record $603,000 in April 2016. On the facilities front, Sell has overseen dramatic upgrades and expansion of competition and practice venues through development and implementation of the 2025 SDSU Athletic Facilities Master Plan. The Dykhouse Student-Athlete Center was completed in 2010, and Sell spearheaded efforts to add permanent seating and a press box at Erv Huether Field, as well as other recent improvements to the home of Jackrabbit baseball. More recently, construction of the $32 million Sanford-Jackrabbit

Athletic Complex was completed in fall 2014. The facility, which serves as a competition venue for indoor track and field and as a practice facility for football and a number of other outdoor sports, contains one of only a handful of 300-meter indoor tracks in the country, as well as expanded facilities for sports medicine and strength and conditioning. In addition, work on the $65 million, 19,000-seat Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium, which serves as the new home of Jackrabbit football, was completed in fall 2016. Born in Salem, Ore., and raised in Columbus, Ohio, Sell came to South Dakota State from the University of Northern Iowa, where he worked in various roles, both at the university and in the community for 10 years. He also worked at Villanova University, Syracuse University, Ohio State University and Bowling Green State University. Sell gained further experience working in the private sector for various sports teams and events. Sell earned his bachelor’s degree in sport management from Bowling Green State University (Ohio) in 1991 and completed a master’s degree in physical education/sport administration at The Ohio State University in 1992.
