The Linde Center opened in June 2019 as home to Tanglewood’s year-round programs for education and performance. The landscape knits new buildings for rehearsal, performance, and gathering into the campus experience. Visitors arrive through a densely-planted woodland edge onto the campus’ iconic canopied lawns.

I was involved from the project’s outset as the main design staff responsible for studying, drafting, and refining landscape concepts in collaboration with the RH team and other consultants. I translated sketches and concepts into drawings and construction documentation. The RH project manager left the firm at 50% CD’s and I inherited many of the dayto-day responsibilities of project management and coordination through construction and project completion. Throughout construction, I participated in 12 site visits to observe progress on grading, planting, walkways, lighting, and fencing. I also participated in coordination calls with the owner, owner’s rep., contractors, and design team. I was the primary staff responsible for managing and processing landscape construction submittals and requests for information in consultation with the RH team.

Topography Concept (top left)

Set in the rolling Berkshire hills, Tanglewood’s 527-acre campus occupies a broad ridgeline overlooking a large lake, the Stockbridge Bowl. The campus originated as two separate estates punctuating the high point of the ridge. The subsequent campus buildings and performance venues defer to the ridge, utilizing the gentle slopes for lawn seating and acoustics. The new complex of buildings straddles the ridgeline, creating a dramatic arrival experience onto the ridge.

Entry Grading (top right)

The major grading challenges included fitting the substantial building footprints to the ridge and its sideslopes and discretely accommodating the necessary parking. Grading and planting along the southern and eastern edges embed the arrival and parking within a dense wooded edge. The parking is set lower than the campus lawns to conceal vehicles and a series of embankments terrace the lot down the hillside.

Sustaining the Heritage Oak (bottom right)

A heritage Red Oak tree serves as a major focal point around which the building volumes were delicately sited. Several other mature canopy trees also dot through the complex. Grading around the trees required careful calibration of the building FFE’s and coordination with an arborist and soil scientist to ensure construction activity did not impact their root zones. Drainage and grades around the Oak were fine-tuned extensively during construction.

CONCRETE PAVING DETAIL AT STUDIO THRESHOLDS

Concrete Details and Finish

The project required utmost finesse with grading and planting, but fewer technical details. The most critical hardscape features were a canopied exposed aggregate concrete walkway, which connected the three main studio buildings and an exposed aggregate concrete cafe terrace for dining spillout. Connections at the studio thresholds received a unique dye treatment, which we refined through custom samples and the mockup process. The areas that required extensive coordination with the architects and structural engineer were at the covered walkway post footings and building edges to eliminate differential settlement.

Field Work

I drafted all field notes for coordination with the design team, owner, and contractors to ensure that the work was carried out in accordance with the design intent and construction documents. I documented any issues that arose during construction administration through regular field reports, which were discussed on weekly OAC calls and provided the contractors supplemental information to guide their work. Grading and site drainage adjustments, such as the above selection, were major recurring items in the reports.

TANGLEWOOD LINDE CENTER / PROFESSIONAL CAMPUS PATH, VIEW EAST A winding path leads from the Linde Center parking to the canopied lawns of the main campus. CAFE TERRACE AND THE HERITAGE OAK The building volumes and covered walkway array around a heritage Red Oak, which provides the backdrop to performances in the main studio. WOODLAND THRESHOLD A woodland pallete of Hayscented Fern, Viburnum, Rhododendron, and Whitespire Birch occupy slopes graded to nestle the entry drive and parking into the larger landscape. COURTYARD GARDEN Whitespire Birch, Hakanachloa, Christmas Fern, Snakeroot, and European Ginger occupy a viewing garden between building volumes.

My Role: Project Manager 2018 - 2019

This main entry plaza was identified and funded as one of the first early intiative projects to be implemented as part of a larger Landscape Framework Plan we completed for the 527-acre campus. Though modest in scope, the project was meant to demonstrate a new era of reinvestment in the campus landscape and provide a welcoming new entry experience where previously there was only a sea of asphalt.

The plaza’s focal point is a bust of Serge Koussevitzky,Tanglewood’s founding composer. Our design incorporated new paving, planting, walls, furnishings, and feature lighting for the bust. The project and bust were commissioned by composer John Williams.

As the project manager, my responsibilities included coordination with the client, design team, and construction team as well as the primary point of contact for construction administration.

Though our detail initially called for the foundations for the flush granite curbing and granite seatwall to be poured separately and pinned together, the contractor preferred to build them in a single pour. We approved the change in consultation with the structural engineer, which ultimately saved time and budget.

Paving Details and Layout

The piano shape of the planted island was said to have been originally designed by Koussevitzky himself, which the project donor and client wanted to honor. We improved the shape of the island, incorporated flush granite curbing with a flamed finish to define the edges, and used the paving and wall to frame a special alcove that would highlight the bust.

Concrete unit pavers define a larger terrace around the island for gathering and seating at the main entry gate. Though we originally carried a concrete paving slab to minimize subgrade settlement, we switched to a bituminous base and sand setting bed during value engineering.

Tanglewood Whispering Bench Restoration

This project was also one of the early initiative projects implemented out of the larger Tanglewood Landscape Framework Plan. This cast-concrete bench sits as the terminus in a series of formal terraced garden rooms. The hemlock hedges that define the formal gardens and frame the southern edge of the campus were not maintained properly for decades. Some had grown up to 30 feet tall, obscuring long views to the surrounding Berkshire hills and Stockbridge Bowl, which initially defined the Tanglewood experience. The restoration of the bench and surrounding hedges was a demonstration project intended to recover a window into those views, reconnect visitors with the campus context, and generate momentum and donor interest toward a full restoration of the formal garden.

My responsibilities included project design and construction documentation. I also participated in construction coordination calls and made several site visits to observe construction progress.

We worked closely with a local structural engineer and concrete restoration contractor to come up with a strategy and best practices for restoring the bench. The team determined that an in situ restoration would be more cost effective and authentic than a complete replacement and could produce a high quality result based on the contractor’s previous restoration experience. The structural engineer conducted an assessment of the bench and produced the above diagrams to guide the contractors’ work. Corresponding details for each type of damage/condition along with detailed specifications were also provided.

The project also served as a field test for replacing a larger ~1/2 mile segment of overgrown Hemlock hedge along the campus’ southern edge. Techny Arborvitae was found to perform well as a hedge replacement species that is easily grown and sheared into a single mass, while also avoiding immenent problems with the Hemlock Wooly Adelgid. The restoration also replaced overgrown boxwood hedges that defined the edges of the garden room and provided new bluestone paving with lawn joints at the base of the bench. All details were researched and executed in accordance with historic documentation of the original garden, but also adapted to contemporary construction standards and best practices.

Restored Garden Room and Bench

The restoration was a strategic intervention in a small area, but with transformative results. Overgrown hemlock hedges once divided and obscured connections both within the campus and to the surrounding landscape. The restoration re-established these connections for visitors and created momentum toward other garden restorations that were funded and implemented in the following year.

The first projected implemented as part of The Blackinton Framework Plan is Tourists, a 48-room hotel located on the site of a former dilapidated 1950’s motel. Re-shaped topography and plantings set a main courtyard and event lawn at a lower level within the Hoosic River’s riparian domain. What had once been a plateau of junk fill overlooking a stagnant mire, is now a series of lawn glades, swales, and rehabilitated wetlands. At the upper level, a domestic frontage of hedges and apple trees sets the rooms away from the busy street and a network of garden beds shape a meandering circulation of woodland and lawn paths leading to a suspension bridge across the Hoosic and the rest of the 72-acre property.

I was involved in the project from the outset, working closely with the design and client team from concept to completion across two phases of work. I conducted ten site visits with the project manager throughout construction to review decks, boardwalks, grading, paving, pool installation, and direct the composition and installation of plant material. Landform, grading, and stormwater management were central to the project’s spatial and performative concepts.

Topography Concept (top right)

When we began the project, the hotel foundations had already been built. Historic research revealed that junk fill including car parts, refridgerators, and construction debris were dumped beyond the edge of the river’s natural bluff landform when a shopping center across the street was built in the 1970s. The original bluff would have run through the main hotel courtyard. We proposed partially restoring the original landform to set the pool closer to the experience of the river and separate the courtyard from the street level. The elevation for the pool terrace was set safely above river flood elevations. Both steps and a 5% lawn path lead down to the lower level.

Sunken Event Lawn (Enlargement B)

In phase two of the project, a historic 19th century farmhouse adjacent to the hotel was rennovated as a restaurant and event space. An event lawn cut into the river bluff provides a mediumsized gathering space that is sheltered from road noise and oriented toward the river. As with much of the Phase 1 work, the earthwork design underwent an extensive approvals process with the local Conservation Commission to ensure there were no significant impacts to the riparian zone or the river’s flood storage capacity.

MULTI-PURPOSE

On an average day, the sunken lawn is a secluded getaway for individuals or small groups, but spacious enough to accommodate special events such as weddings, concerts, or banquets.

Stormwater Management

In collaboration with the civil engineer, we developed a water management strategy to channel and infiltrate stormwater on site, while improving nearby riparian habitats through restoration of an existing wetland. Sheet flow across the front lawns, parking lots, and walkways is directed into a series of swales connected by underground pipes. Roof runoff falls into linear gravel infiltration strips at the edge of room walkways and underdrains beneath the back decks. Stormwater discharge into the existing wetland was restricted so all captured runoff is conveyed into a large wetland swale in the main courtyard, where it is retained and infiltrates into the ground.

PERFORMATIVE AND BIODIVERSE

The main wetland swale is key to the overall site stormwater management strategy while also providing a seasonally-fluctuating mix of diverse wetland forbs and grasses as a courtyard spectacle.

Materials and Layout (Phase 1)

The project required detailed resolution of many different material conditions and adjacencies. The client had strong aesthetic preferences, which resulted in an incredible coherence between the material expression of the buildings and landscape. At times, their preferences were at odds with our own standards for long-term maintenance and durability, but that was a compromise the client was ultimately willing to make in favor of aesthetics. Specific examples were the widespread use of White Oak as the standard material for building cladding and decking and a curbless design for the gravel parking lot. We weighed these decisions in conversation with the client, who understood the maintenance they would require and decided they were essential to the project’s aesthetic expression.

Lodge Deck

Wood decks and boardwalks were a key design element used to create spaces for gathering, leisure, and relaxation. The main gathering space is a deck that extends from the main entry threshold and projects over the bluff landform into the space of the main courtyard. New mature sugar maples were planted within the footprint of the deck to provide ample shade and we incorporated poles and coordinated with the architect to provide connections on the building to string a canopy of cafe lighting overhead. I drafted every deck and boardwalk detail on the project in consultation with the project manager and our structural engineer. I also assisted with construction administration for those elements.

Lodge Deck Details

Detailing the lodge deck required close coordination with our structural engineer and the careful resolution with adjacent building and paving conditions. In particular, to acheive the cantilevered effect that would make the deck project into the main courtyard space, we had to devise a unique framing structure, which anchors the cantilevered portion to a frost-depth foundation wall.

The wetland boardwalk is the main access point for visitors to enjoy the riverfront on the hotel property. The path of the boardwalk descends from the main courtyard path, along the river bluff and restored wetlands, and lands at the riverfront, capping an existing concrete manhole for a storm sewer lift station. Through close coordination with the structural engineer, we detailed a helical pile system, which allowed the us to minimize the boardwalk’s footprint through the wetlands and on embankment side slopes. Helical piles also allowed the overlook deck to hover above the existing manhole in a way that both hides the structure and preserves access through a built-in hatch in the deck.
