JACKSON ACADEMY 2016 SUMMER CAMPS Learning has never been so much fun! The camps at Jackson Academy have something for everyone, from rising sports or stage stars to future artists and scientists. We have several new camps to delight and thrill you. Summer is a great time to get on track academically with our workshops and Reading Institute. Please check the camp catalog and see these new camps, along with everyone’s favorites. A few reminders: 1. Many camps have limited availability, so sign up quickly. 2. Space in the camps cannot be held without payment and registration forms. 3. Please read all policies on the registration form and sign. 4. Call 601.364.5763 with questions and concerns. Summer Care Policy Summer Care is Jackson Academy’s After School Program designed for Jackson Academy students who are enrolled in JA for the 2016-2017 school term, need extended supervision before and after the camp, and are not enrolled in our regular Summer Program.
Parents Attendance Parents are welcome to attend the last session of each camp to meet your child’s instructor/coach and to see performances, competitions, or projects. Please check with the instructor/coach for times.
Summer Care will be $30 per day, plus a summer registration fee of $50 for PK-K and $100 for grades 1st-6th. Registration is through the After School Office only. Should you need additional information, please contact Hope Burford at 601-368-7398.

2016 SUMMER CAMPS Boys Baseball Camp Coach Jay Powell invites you to get ready for your baseball season with the Jackson Academy Raider baseball team. Boys Basketball Camp JA Raiders Coach Bill Ball and his staff offer an instructional camp designed to meet the needs of rising ballplayers of all abilities. Basketball fundamentals, good sportsmanship, a positive attitude, and enthusiasm will be emphasized in a wholesome camp atmosphere. T-shirt is included. Grades: 1st-9th. Fee: $80. Meet in the Gym. Girls Basketball Camp Lady Raiders Coach Jan Sojourner and her assistants will lead participants in learning basketball fundamentals and achieving a new level of playing ability in an environment that is both challenging and fun. Cheerleading/Accent Camp This non-stop week of action includes a variety of activities designed to develop cheer and dance team skills, and is led by our award-winning JA Accents and JA Varsity Cheerleaders. Fast Pitch Softball Camp Coach Will Whitehead and assistants will work on individual and team softball techniques in a fast-paced camp for girls of all levels of playing ability. T-shirt is included. Grades: 3rd-8th. Fee: $80. Meet at the softball field at Raider Park. June 27-30. 9:00-12:00.
Football Camp JA Raider football staff will lead participants in basic football skills including passing, receiving, running, blocking, and tackling. Raider Speed Camp Coach Mack Norwood and staff will work with campers on techniques to enhance speed, agility, coordination, and balance. Tennis Camp Beginner and intermediate level tennis instruction will be available this summer for the PK-4th grade student! Instructor Mary Rebecca Barry will instruct campers in basic techniques, scoring, strategy, and tennis etiquette. Racquets will be provided for use during camp. Get ready for some fun on the courts! Volleyball Join us for our volleyball camp, specifically designed to meet the needs of girls entering grades 3rd-9th. This camp focuses on all aspects of the game with emphasis on fundamentals. We will provide on-court instruction in the following areas: serving, serve receiving, forearm passing, setting, attacking, and blocking. Along with on-court instruction there will be many fun activities and matches. T-shirt is included. Grades: 3rd-6th. Fee: $80. Meet in Gym. July 11-14. 1:00-5:00. July 14 will be 1:00-4:00.
Beat the Heat July is HOT! Join us in the area by the track at Raider Park for a fun way to beat the heat! Cool off in the water slides, slip and slides, and enjoy other water fun. Wear your swimsuit under shorts and a t-shirt, and wear your flip-flops, too. Bring a towel, snack, and water. This camp is led by JA’s Caleb Canterbury. Grades: 1st-6th. Fee: $80. Kung Fu Kids This new camp is offered by the award-winning Academy of Kung Fu, and is martial arts training at its best! Boys and girls will enjoy exciting and fun basic Kung Fu training. Students will learn age specific Kung Fu techniques, self defense, and bully prevention. These lessons will help to develop focus, coordination, and confidence. This camp also incorporates character development lessons including respect, self-discipline, patience, and compassion. Kids love it because it’s FUN! 2016 SUMMER CAMPS Art Explorations For all of those who love to paint, draw, or doodle, come and learn the basics of using several different art media. We will be using pencils, color pencils, pastels, and all different types of paint to develop your own style and promote new skills. All materials are included in the price of the class. Crafty Creations Students will create all sorts of projects using different types of media. All materials and supplies are included in the price of the class. Draw, Paint, Imagine! This camp is for students who truly are inspired with a pencil, pen, or paintbrush. Students will work with all sorts of art media including watercolor, oil pastel, and acrylic paint on a wide variety of surfaces. We will develop and push students’ imaginations to enhance their love for art! All materials and supplies are included in the price of the class. Summer Dance Sea Cruise Join us this summer for a Dance Sea Cruise! Once aboard the ship, our first stop each day will be the spa where we will create our wardrobe for the day, whether we are visiting Mermaid Lagoon with our younger dancers or the streets of Madrid with our older girls. Our ship will stop in a different locale each day. You will not want to miss the Voyage of the Summer! 2016 SUMMER CAMPS Theater Come take part in learning the basics of musical theater as JA’s own Katie Shores directs the MTI Kids production, 101 Dalmatians! As in past years, you can expect a nationally recognized production, complete with well-known music, fun group numbers with custom choreography, personalized costumes, and performance features galore. Students will participate in every aspect of musical production, with two full performances for the public at the end of the week. There are limited spots available, so don’t miss your chance to be a part of the 4th annual Summer Theater Camp at Jackson Academy. Grades: Rising 3rd-rising 9th. Fee: $300. Summer Showoffs With its beginnings in Jackson, Mississippi, Summer Showoffs has grown into one of the largest show-choir camps of its kind. Spend a week with us at camp at Jackson Academy this summer. Summer Showoffs is great for self-esteem, coordination, and confidence. This camp teaches that singing, dancing, and speaking on stage can be fun! Grades included in this camp are K-12. Your child will meet Monday-Thursday to rehearse group singing, choreography, solos, and the correct way to speak and use the microphone. On Friday we will have a dress rehearsal and then a grand performance for friends and family. Bring your friends and join us this summer and…Show Off! June 13-17. Meet in Performing Arts Center. Bricks 4 Kidz Camp Our Bricks 4 Kidz camps are built around our proprietary motorized model plans, designed by engineers and architects. Our specially designed project kits and theme-based models provide the building blocks for Bricks 4 Kidz approach to educational play. We learn, we build, we play with LEGO bricks! Star Wars/Space Adventures LEGO S.T.E.M. Inspired by NASA and Star Wars™, our Space Adventures camp is packed full of models that will make your imagination blast off! Each day, campers will learn about real-life space exploration and build motorized models related to the NASA space program. Each day also includes LEGO Star Wars™ themed models, group games, challenges, and more. Bricks 4 Kidz Space Adventures camp provides the spark for imagination and creativity to take off on an adventure that’s out of this world, while learning engineering skills! Grades: K-4th. Angry Birds® and Bad Piggies® LEGO S.T.E.M. Enter into the world of Angry Birds® and Bad Piggies®…the Bricks 4 Kidz way…using LEGO Bricks! Set your birds to flight by launching them on catapults and slingshots to destroy the pigs. Campers will build a working launcher and different colored birds using LEGO bricks. 2016 SUMMER CAMPS Drama Kids Playhouse Join us as we let our campers use their creativity to deliver a great play—created, directed, designed, costumed, and performed by them! Campers will explore all aspects of theater from acting and directing to set design and more. Our campers will bring the house down during their End of Camp DKI Playhouse Presentation, performing a play their team creates. Want to know how the story ends? So do we! Grades: K-4th. Fee: $195. “Sew a Friend” Sew Fun Studios Camp SEW FUN students learn the art of sewing and design through creative, project-based classes. Spend your week learning to sew while completing projects you take home! Trace, cut, stuff, and sew your way to creating your cuddly friends! Our creative instructors will offer hands-on fun, while inspiring your child in the art of sewing, using child friendly sewing machines. We will make “Hootie the Owl,” “Snake Charmer,” “Dapper the Penguin,” and “Blockhead Bunny”! All supplies are included. Grades: 2nd-6th. Fee: $225. Meet in the JA Lower School Art Room. Gifted Explorations: “Imagineers” Summer Camp Come be a part of the world of imagination! Campers will rotate through modules focusing on creative ways to collaborate and become immersed in the world of physics and so much more. Glimpse of Modules: Go Carts Future engineers will create a freestyle go-cart that can navigate a student-created obstacle course! Once the go-cart is complete, campers will compete in a final race for family and friends. Maker Station Using reverse engineering, campers will repurpose parts from various machines to design their own battery powered innovations in Maker Station! Inventions will be presented to parents on the final day of camp.
Circuit Makers Students will explore the world of circuity and learn the underpinnings of what makes things work. Campers will delve into the world of LED lights and apply principles learned to creatively design and enhance an ordinary item. Art Alive Recycled items become new when campers synthesize and design creatively. Using a plethora of materials, campers will look beyond the obvious and stretch the artistic side of their brains to go where no one else has gone before! Come join us for a week of exploration and imagination as we become “Imagineers” and tantalize our brains!

Advanced Robotics: Nature’s Fury Cliff Powers, Lower School STEM instructor at Jackson Academy, will take explorers on a challenging and fun-filled adventure through the world of robotics. Using the latest LEGO EV3 components, students will build and program advanced robots to help a community survive the devastation of a powerful hurricane. Students will learn advanced design, drive systems, and programming while developing collaboration, teamwork, brainstorming, and problem-solving skills. This class will be offered in June and July (Monday-Thursday) and is limited to 20 students per session. Grades: Entering 4th-6th. Fee: $250. Meet in the Lower School STEM lab. June 6-9. 9:00-12:00. Junior Robotics Camp Cliff Powers, Lower School STEM instructor at Jackson Academy, will introduce young designers to the world of robotics. Using LEGO’s WeDo products, younger students will create operable robots while learning the basics of motors, sensors, gears, and drives. Working with a partner, the students will also develop collaboration, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. Computer Tots Two super Computer Tots camps will be offered this summer. Students will rotate on computers, iPads, peripherals, art, and LEGO Robotics STEM stations. There are spots available for 6 to 20 students. These fill quickly, so sign up early! 2016 Summer Olympics-Rio Style. Students will attend a mini-Olympic camp. They will learn about exercise, fitness, nutrition, and the human body. Foreign Language Exploration (FLEX) will have students using technology and hands-on activities to explore international languages and cultures. Passports of different countries will be stamped, and students will be making art projects, including handmade paper torches. Students will carry flags representing different countries for their “march” during the opening games. Come join the fun! Grades: K3-1st. Fee: $130. Meet in the Preschool Library. DINO-mite Dinosaur Days. Get ready to explore the fascinating world of dinosaurs! Our latest technology programs and microscopes will allow us to explore what happened years ago. Students will program a “walking dinosaur” to look for eggs during our Dino Egg Scavenger Hunt. Photography skills will be utilized when the students are introduced to our selfie booth. Students will also reconstruct a full dinosaur skeleton using individualized fossil bones and bone sections. They will become paleontologists and work on a “mock camp dig site.” Stories, puzzles, and games utilizing an electronic dinosaur will round out the camp. Academic Courses for New Credit Information concerning courses for academic credit and for Driver’s Education will be mailed to parents after Spring Break. Enrollment is limited; registration is scheduled only through the Upper School Office at 601.366.2663.
English & Math Brush Up JA instructors prepare rising 7th graders for 8th grade with this review of basic grammar and algebraic concepts. Grade: 7th. Fee: $90. Meet in Upper School ARC rooms. August 8-10. 3:00-5:00.
Reading Institute JA will offer a two week intervention for rising 1st grade students and up needing remediation. All classes will be taught by trained professionals of specific programs offered. Classes will be held in the ARC classrooms in the Lower School building. (Very small student/teacher ratios) Phonics/Reading Using Orton Gillingham and Lindamoodbell techniques, students participate in a two week program that is designed for students that need systematic intervention in the basics of reading, spelling, and vocabulary. Strategies used are designed for students with dyslexia and related reading difficulties. Students will receive 20 hours of instruction—2 hours per day. Cost is $450. Two sessions: Grades: Rising 1st-3rd: July 11-22. 8:00-10:00. Grades: Rising 4th and up: July 11-22. 1:00-3:00.
Reading Comprehension This two week comprehensive program successfully emulates the concept of imagery which improves language skills, reading comprehension, critical thinking, and semantic memory. Students are immersed in strategies to build active reading and writing skills. Using multi-sensory techniques, students will gain knowledge and application of the writing process. 2016 SUMMER CAMPS Summer Academic Workshops All workshops will meet in the 7th-8th grade hall. Rooms will be assigned the first day of the workshop. Meet at the end of the hall near the football field. Fee: $200.
Writing Mechanics (rising 9th-12th) June 6-10: 1:00-3:00 Students will learn the basics of writing essays, which includes format, content, punctuation, and grammatical structure. Students will be exposed to skills needed to formulate a cohesive essay. In addition, documentation of sources for term papers will be covered.
Literature/Grammar/Vocabulary (rising 5th-6th and rising 7th-8th) June 6-10: 1:00-3:00 Learn the nuts and bolts of active reading skills to master reading comprehension using summer reading materials. Students will learn ways to study vocabulary effectively and store information in memory. Basic grammar skills will be reviewed, and students will receive a preview of skills needed to master the understanding of grammar and its applications in speaking and writing.

Camp Policy In case of cancellation after registering for a camp, if Jackson Academy is notified in writing at least two weeks prior to the start of a camp, 100 percent of the fee will be refunded. If Jackson Academy is notified at least one week prior to the start of a camp, 50 percent of the fee will be refunded. Less than one week’s notice of cancellation will result in the forfeiture of all fees paid.
