MHDS Recognized by Tennessee Department of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities As a 4-Star Agency

Madison Haywood Developmental Services (MHDS) has been honored by the Tennessee Department of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (DIDD) as a 4-Star Agency which is the highest quality rating from the department. In a letter to MHDS, Commissioner James M. Henry said “For the past several years, DIDD has worked to establish a comprehensive quality management system which includes numerous mechanisms to measure the quality of services and supports provided by community-based providers.” The analysis system includes examination of: • Outcome based quality assurance survey tools • Mechanisms for the review and trending of data related to incidents and investigations • Additional quality-related data available to DIDD “All of this information generates a portrait as relates to the level of performance of each provider,” Henry said. “Based on these criteria, I am pleased to notify you that MHDS has been designated a 4-Star Agency for 2012.” William D. MHDS currently serves approximately 265 adults who are intellectually disabled and employs over 400 staff in West Tennessee including Madison, Haywood, Hardeman, Hardin, Decatur, Chester, McNairy, Gibson, Fayette and Henderson counties with varying levels of service. The agency operates day and residential services on some basis 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. MHDS Workshops, which offer skills training by performing work contracted through area businesses and industry, are located in Jackson, Brownsville and Bolivar.

Dart’s Carts Featured in Yamaha Golf-Car Company Newsletter Dart’s Carts, a brand-new Yamaha golf car Dealer in Jackson, was featured as the dealer spotlight in the Yamaha Golf Car Club “Yamaha Links” newsletter. Dart’s Carts was started in 2011 and is led by Trad Longeway. Brooks West, Western U.S. Direct Sales Manager, Yamaha Golf-Car Company, highlighted the local company in the newsletter. “Dart’s Carts is off to an incredible start by selling almost 60 golf cars in their first year of operation,” West wrote in the publication. “Trad attributes much of this success to taking a ‘current and modern’ approach to sales by utilizing web and social media platforms such as CraigsList, Facebook and his website to not only get his name out there but also to communicate what inventory is available from the Yamaha family.” West also wrote that Dart’s Carts knows exactly what their customers wants and needs are. “This is a very important aspect in any retail business, but is especially important in a business where we are seeing more and more people starting to sell golf carts from their used car lots, general stores, etc.,” West wrote. “I am proud to have Dart Longeway, Co-Owner, Trad, Dwayne Davis, Head Mechanic, and the rest of the Dart’s Cart’s family to be a part of our team here at Yamaha.”

Steele Martin Jones & Company Adds Professional Staff Steele Martin Jones & Company adds two new professional staff members. Meribeth Boehler graduated from Freed-Hardeman University in 2011 with a BBA and MBA in accounting, all completed in four years. Boehler was also a dedicated member of the Lady Lion’s basketball team. Leading them to the final four of national tournament last spring (2011) and being named NAIA national player of the year, WBCA national player of the year, national tournament MVP. Craig LeQuire received his BS and Master of Accountancy degree from Lipscomb University in 2009 where he earned the Crowe Chizek Award of Excellence. LeQuire brings three years of professional experience to the firm. “These two new professionals will greatly enhance our growing practice,” said founding partner of Steele Martin Jones and Company, Mike Steele.

VOLUNTEER Spotlight Ty Cowles Jackson Energy Authority, Manager of Industrial Services Ty Cowles, Manager of Industrial Services with Jackson Energy Authority, has been chosen by The Chamber as the March Volunteer of the Month. Ty served as the Vice Chair for The Chamber’s Leadership Jackson program the past year and currently serves as Chair for the upcoming class. “As a graduate of the program, I was grateful for the opportunity as Chair to pass on the traditions of Leadership Jackson to emerging leaders of this community,” Cowles said. Ty is also an ex-officio Board member for the Leadership Jackson Alumni Association and has helped with The Chamber’s Rock The Chamber Membership Event. “Leadership Jackson is a tremendous commitment of time for any volunteer,” said Judy Renshaw, Senior Vice President, Business & Community Services for The Chamber. “After graduating from the program in 2010, Ty served as Vice Chair in 2011 and then moved into the Chair’s position in 2012. He has taken on this task with a spirit of passion for our mission of developing and equipping leaders for the future. GOOD NEWS JACKSON Steve Bowers awarded Jackson’s Man of the Year by Jackson Exchange Club Steve Bowers, communications manager of Jackson Energy Authority, was chosen as Jackson’s Man of the Year by the Jackson Exchange Club because of his service to the city. Chamber Connection: What’s new with your organization? Myers: We are constantly working to provide the best in technology-based banking services. We just launched iPhone and Droid apps so customers would have easy, convenient access to their accounts. This is in addition to the remote deposit for businesses which allows our clients to scan and deposit checks immediately from the convenience of their office. In addition to technical advances, we are continuing to grow our personnel. Laura Byrd, our newest officer and Vice President, has joined our team and has already proven to be an asset to our organization. Chamber Connection: What’s the biggest community project you’re working on right now? Myers: For us, each project is our biggest. All of us at Commercial Bank & Trust have a deep understanding that giving back to the community is a valued opportunity. Our model of contribution is based, not just on monetary giving, but volunteering according to our individual talents and abilities. For example, our leadership serves in a wide variety of charitable organizations, like the Carl Perkins Exchange Club, Jackson Arts Council and The Arthritis Foundation. Recently, we sponsored The Jackson Symphony’s Legacy Circle event, “Champagne & Chocolate” and we are looking forward to the upcoming Breakfast for Babies event in March, a great community event that benefits the March of Dimes. Also, as an organization, we support financial literacy programs and projects. Personally, I have been honored to serve on the Leadership Jackson Alumni Association board of directors and I have recently joined the Jackson Downtown Development Corporation’s board of directors. Through these efforts, I will be able to contribute first-hand to promoting leaders in our community and the preservation and revitalization of our beautiful, historic downtown. Chamber Connection: What’s helped your organization become successful in our community? Myers: I think what sets us apart is the fact that our primary focus is truly on our customers. Their input drives everything we do, from our locations and hours, to our personalized service. We feel that there will always be a need for a community bank, especially one that offers all of the services offered at larger banks, but with local leadership and local decision-makers. It is an honor to be part of an organization that has become successful by building strong relationships within the community. Chamber Connection: What does your organization do that most people don’t know about? Myers: Many people are familiar with our community focus. Our customers know first-hand how far that extends.
