Q&A
ABOVE: John Myers, Vice President of Commercial Bank and Trust Company.
Chamber Connection: What’s new with your organization? Myers: We are constantly working to provide the best in technology-based banking services. We just launched iPhone and Droid apps so customers would have easy, convenient access to their accounts. This is in addition to the remote deposit for businesses which allows our clients to scan and deposit checks immediately from the convenience of their office. In addition to technical advances, we are continuing to grow our personnel. Laura Byrd, our newest officer and Vice President, has joined our team and has already proven to be an asset to our organization. Chamber Connection: What’s the biggest community project you’re working on right now? Myers: For us, each project is our biggest. All of us at Commercial Bank & Trust have a deep understanding that giving back to the community is a valued opportunity. Our model of contribution is based, not just on monetary giving, but volunteering according to our individual talents and abilities. For example, our leadership serves in a wide variety of charitable organizations, like the Carl Perkins Exchange Club, Jackson Arts Council and The Arthritis Foundation. Recently, we sponsored The Jackson Symphony’s Legacy Circle event, “Champagne & Chocolate” and we are looking forward to the upcoming Breakfast for Babies event in March, a great community event that benefits the March of Dimes. Also, as an organization, we support financial literacy programs and projects. Personally, I have been honored to serve on the Leadership Jackson Alumni Association board of directors and I have recently joined the Jackson Downtown Development Corporation’s board of directors. Through these efforts, I will be able to contribute first-hand to promoting leaders in our community and the preservation and revitalization of our beautiful, historic downtown. Chamber Connection: What’s helped your organization become successful in our community? Myers: I think what sets us apart is the fact that our primary focus is truly on our customers. Their input drives everything we do, from our locations and hours, to our personalized service. We feel that there will always be a need for a community bank, especially one that offers all of the services offered at larger banks, but with local leadership and local decision-makers. It is an honor to be part of an organization that has become successful by building strong relationships within the community. Chamber Connection: What does your organization do that most people don’t know about? Myers: Many people are familiar with our community focus. Our customers know first-hand how far that extends. But many people do not know when you walk in the door of one of our branches, there are no teller lines; you sit down with an experienced banker for one-on-one contact. We also offer a courier service, specially tailored to meet the needs of small business owners. Our courier car is a registered bank branch, so when we pick up your deposit, it’s in the bank. We go beyond depositing a check, we offer trustworthy financial advice. And if we cannot help you, we will suggest someone who can based on our wide professional network in the community. In addition, Commercial Bank and Trust offers customers same-day credit for deposits through the end of the business day at 5:00 pm, eliminating the need to rush to the bank by 2:00 pm. Did I mention the bowls of chocolate and fresh coffee? Chamber Connection: What are some recent successes your organization has experienced? Myers: The greatest successes are those in which we see our contributions reflected in the building up of our community. This extends beyond the work we do at our branch offices and into the volunteer opportunities. On the financial side, more than ever, we want to offer our clients the stability and peace of mind that they need, as well as the highest level of customer service and the best banking products available. That is why we are proud to receive a recommended 5-Star Superior rating—the highest rating for financial strength and stability from BauerFinancial, Inc. Karen Dorway, President of BauerFinancial stated, “The entire team at Commercial Bank and Trust has proven their commitment to their customers. Community Banks, like Commercial Bank and Trust, tend to know their customers and the local business community. What many people don’t realize is that community banks actually have better balance sheets than their larger counterparts. Their capital ratios and nonperforming asset ratios are typically much more impressive than larger institutions. These are not the banks that threaten our economic well-being. On the contrary, they are the lifeblood of it.” Chamber Connection: What are some of the future goals of your organization? Myers: There will always be a place for a community bank. Because of this, we look forward to continued growth in the Jackson community. Our goal is to always be the “right size” bank, so that, no matter how much we grow, we maintain the best level of service for each and every one of our customers. Part of that goal is to continue exploring new technologies which would allow our customers the most secure, readily available access to their information, all while maintaining our highly personalized in-bank service. Chamber Connection: Are there any things we didn’t ask that you would like to share? Myers: There is no question that our success has been a result of our focus on people. If you are tired of banking as usual, drop by one of our branches. We would be honored to serve you.
