INSIDE: Women in Business Luncheon Advocates the Importance of Women’s Heart Health The Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce hosted its Women in Business Luncheon on Thursday, February 2, advocating heart health in recognition of American Heart Month. Around 130 women attended the luncheon wearing red to show their support for women’s heart disease awareness. Cindy Ross, DNSc, FNP/BC, spoke to the women about the symptoms, risks and preventions of heart disease. “Most women in general do not know the warning signs of early heart disease because the signs are different then in a man,” said Ross. “Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of American women.” February is American Heart Month, a month dedicated to spread awareness about the importance of heart health. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for all Americans and accounts for $1 out of every $6 health care dollars, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Ross stated that it is important for women to educate themselves regarding heart health. “You are the best advocate of your health,” Ross said. “Women do not seek help as fast as they should. Women are eight times more likely to die from heart disease than cancer. They lack education in the risk factors and warnings of heart disease.” Some risk factors for heart disease in women are: high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, being overweight, family history of early heart disease, age, physical caliber and smoking. When recognizing signs of heart disease, Ross

stated that while men experience chest pain, sometimes women do not always present chest pain as a symptom. “The No. 1 symptom is extreme fatigue,” Ross said. “Women may also experience shortness of breath and light headedness/dizziness.” Other symptoms include skipped heart beats, breaking out in a cold sweat and unusual upper body pain in the arms, back or jaw. “If a woman feels that she is having a heart attack, she should immediately call 911,” Ross said. “Then she should chew a 325 milligram aspirin. If she chews the aspirin versus swallowing, the body will absorb the aspirin faster to prevent blockage. Also, she should never drive herself to the emergency room. Call an ambulance to come get you.” In order to prevent heart disease, Ross stated that knowledge of your family history and exercising 30 minutes at least three to four times a week was important. She also stated that women should have a Body Mass Index 25 or less, a fasting glucose/sugar of 100 and total cholesterol of 200 or less. Other steps to prevent heart disease for women are no smoking, reducing stress level and eating a nutritious diet. Along with the presentation, participants at the luncheon enjoyed networking and a question and answer session with Ross about heart disease awareness. CHAMBER NEWS

CEO of UGN, Inc., speaks at Chamber Quarterly Membership Breakfast Peter Anthony, President/CEO of UGN, Inc., informs community on UGN’s Jackson location and the Toyota Production System

The President and Chief Executive Officer of UGN, Inc., Peter Anthony, was the featured speaker for the Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce’s Quarterly Membership Breakfast held on Wednesday, January 18. Anthony spoke at the Chamber’s breakfast about the importance of UGN’s location in Jackson and how UGN is using the Toyota Production System. “As a big supporter of the Jackson community, I thought it would help for you to walk away today with a better understanding of UGN,” Anthony said at the Chamber’s Quarterly Membership Breakfast. “And not just the company, but in how using the Toyota Production System is pertinent to business growth in today’s climate.” Anthony successfully embraced the Toyota Production System (TPS) as the foundation of the UGN business model, which resulted in maximum productivity and efficiency throughout his manufacturing and business management structure. Through cross-training and adherence to a flexible business model, Anthony has positioned his company to respond to business fluctuations. Implementations of cost-cutting measures have ensured that UGN will remain a highly profitable enterprise and an industry leader in the delivery of state-ofthe-art automotive products. ABOVE: Kyle Spurgeon, President/CEO of the Jackson Area “You will know I am a big advocate of TPS,” Anthony said. “It is pretty easy to sit back and think, ‘Oh that Chamber of Commerce, Kathy Watts, past chairman of the Chamber Board of Directors and Madison County Mayor Jimmy works only for manufacturing companies or for the Fortune 500.’ When, the idea of constantly getting lean, reHarris welcomed Peter Anthony, President/CEO of UGN, Inc., to ducing expenses, eliminating waste and developing your Team Members works for any organization. A start-up The Chamber’s Quarterly Membership Breakfast. can pinch every penny, a hospital can reduce wait times, executives can (and should) walk around and talk to employees. Even TSA can create a process that gets people through security much more quickly. We all should be constantly looking for ways to continually improve our organizations.” In October 2010, UGN announced that it had picked Jackson for an $11 million expansion, where it would add 40 new local jobs as part of a two-state expansion that continued the company’s impressive growth. “Deciding to invest another $11 million to prepare both Jackson and UGN for the future was an easy call,” Anthony said. With its expansion announcement in October 2010, UGN officials also said the construction of a $9 million, 40,000-square-foot addition of UGN’s Jackson facility was going to start in November 2010 and increase the plant size by more than 20 percent. The company was also going to begin hiring 30 new team members in March and April 2011 with production expected to start in May 2011. A projected second $1.5 million phase was also going to create an additional 10 jobs in March 2012. “Right now, we have 259 team members,” Anthony said. “In March and April 2011, we hired 30 new team members and we will be creating ten more jobs within a few months. Last year our plant size grew 20 percent.” Anthony said that UGN has announced plans to expand jobs at all of its facilities assuming the automotive industry continues to grow. As for UGN’s Jackson location, he said they have invested $39.2 million and the projected sales for the 2012 year are $56.2 million. “Being in a community like Jackson allows UGN to continue our role in a true global partnership with a world-class position in the auto industry,” Anthony said. “It is easy to get there with the world-class team members we have working in our plant here.” Anthony also said that Madison county is centrally located, which helps control their transportation costs. “We’re extremely proud of the work we are doing with TPS in Jackson and UGN as a whole,” Anthony said. “You should be proud of your local, regional and state leaders who have, and continue to, work with us on everything from incentive packages to training programs for our team members. We were not surprised to see Site Selection magazine rank Jackson as one of the top metro areas of its size in which to do business. Jackson is at the top of our list, too.”

Chamber Emissaries Given Challenge The Emissaries volunteer group was issued a challenge of whom could contact 100 Chamber members the quickest during this past year. Three places were awarded during the $100 for 100 Challenge. First place winner Amanda Pailet, Courtyard by Marriott/Hampton Inn and Suites/Residence Inn by Marriott, was awarded a $50 Darden’s gift card and a $50 check. Second place winner Drew Yates, FirstBank, was awarded a $50 Darden’s gift card, and third place winner Jim Metcalf, Sonoco, was awarded a $25 Brooksie’s Barn gift card. The Emissaries connect with existing chamber members to verify their contact information and to reinforce the importance of chamber membership. Each Emissary is usually only asked to commit to contacting 60 members annually. Under the leadership of Jess June, Fidelity Search Enterprises and past chairman of the Emissaries, The Chamber Emissaries group finished the year achieving a record of 1,270 contacts made to Chamber members.

The Jackson Generals announced in a January press conference at Pringles Park that Huntingdon, Tennessee native Jason Compton was named the club’s new General Manager. Compton was promoted from his Assistant General Manager role. Also, Mike Peasley was hired as the new Vice President of Sales and Marketing for the Generals. “We are proud of Jason, and the work he has put in over his 12 years with the organization,” said Generals President Reese Smith III. “Having watched Jason over the years, we have the utmost confidence that he will help take this franchise to the next level. David Freeman and I are excited to be promoting from within the organization.” Compton was an intern with the Diamond Jaxx during the 2000 Southern League Championship season and then was hired full time in July of 2001. During his 12 seasons with the organization, he was Director of Ticketing & Merchandise, Director of Group Sales, and was promoted to Assistant General Manager in May 2008. “I want to thank Reese, David and the entire ownership group for having the trust and confidence in me to lead the organization,” said Compton. “It is an honor to be only the fourth General Manager in franchise history, but I am most proud to be the first that has been from West Tennessee.” Compton also added, “Our goals and visions of making Pringles Park the premier place for affordable entertainment in West Tennessee have not changed. If anything, they will be intensified for the upcoming season.”

Electrodiagnostic Expert Achieves Board Certification

Dr. Ronald Bingham, founder of EMG Clinics of Tennessee, has achieved board certification in electrodiagnostic medicine from the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine (ABEM) and is now an ABEM Diplomate. The designation of ABEM Diplomate demonstrates that Dr. Bingham has obtained specific training and passed a comprehensive written and oral examination to demonstrate competency in electrodiagnostic evaluation of disorders of the neuromuscular system. Physicians who practice electrodiagnostic medicine diagnose and manage individuals of all ages who have medical problems related to muscle and nerve disorders such as carpal tunnel syndrome, myasthenia gravis, and neuropathies, just to name a few. The most common electrodiagnostic tests include electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies. Dr. Bingham founded EMG Clinics of Tennessee in 1989. EMG Clinics of Tennessee specializes in state-of-the-art nerve and muscle testing. Based in Jackson, Tennessee, EMG Clinics of Tennessee also has satellite clinics in nine West Tennessee/North Mississippi communities. EMG Clinics of Tennessee has become the industry standard for accurate and comprehensive evaluations of the peripheral nervous system. Dr. Bingham received medical training from Louisiana State University School of Medicine and received his specialty training at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. “My board certification in electrodiagnostic medicine demonstrates that I am serious about the quality of my work. I am proud to be one of a select group of physicians who have accomplished this milestone,” said Dr. Bingham. “At EMG Clinics of Tennessee we want to help the treating doctor or nurse practitioner by accurately evaluating the nerves and muscles. The most important step toward recovery is an accurate diagnosis. This board certification is one of several steps we have taken to offer state of the art nerve testing.”
