Excellence for Workplace Safety. The award was given Wednesday, August 3 at the 34th Annual Tennessee Safety and Health Congress held at the Gaylord Opryland in Nashville, Tennessee. Tennalum also received the Award in 2006. “Tennalum has demonstrated a strong commitment to maintaining a safe and healthy workplace,” said Davis, who presented the Commissioner’s Award of Excellence to the company. “The evaluation criteria for this award is challenging, and this company has worked extremely hard to meet and exceed the standards the award requires.” The Commissioner’s Award honors Tennessee employers and their employees who together have achieved a required number of hours worked without experiencing a lost workday case and have maintained total injury and illness incidence rates below the national average. The number of hours required is based on the size of the company. Tennalum, a division of Kaiser Aluminum, has 200 employees in the manufacturing of aluminum rod and bar products used primarily in aerospace and automotive applications. The facility has qualified for the Commissioner’s Award by working more than 560,000 hours without a lost-time injury. The Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development Safety Awards Program is designed to stimulate interest in accident prevention and to promote safety. The program recognizes manufacturing and construction firms throughout the state that achieve and maintain a safe and healthful workplace. To obtain an application or additional information on the Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health (TOSHA) Safety Awards Program, contact the safety grant manager in Nashville at (800) 325-9901 or (615) 741-5281.

The GATE recognition honors large, medium and small-size companies who have achieved excellence in engaging in global trade. Luncheon. “These existing Tennessee businesses are showing Tennessee products and services can be successful in a global economy,” Haslam said. “The GATE Award winners are to be congratulated for exploring new markets and seeing the opportunities available in a global marketplace.” The companies represent winners in three categories: Mallory Alexander International Logistics, LLC for the large company category, Copperweld Bimetallics, LLC for the medium company category and Paradoxe Corporation for the small company category. Paradoxe Corporation specializes in electrical power transmission and distribution of energy and address three distinct segments: electrical utilities, industrial and construction and original equipment manufacturers. The company’s core geographical market is North America, Central America and South America. In 2010, 95 percent of Paradoxe Corporation’s annual sales were attributed to exports. “I congratulate the GATE Award winners for successfully navigating the challenges and opportunities that the global marketplace can bring,” Hagerty said. “Having spent much of my private sector career working with overseas markets, I have a unique admiration for and understanding of the benefits of global trading and how it can help existing Tennessee companies expand and remain competitive.”
Gerdau Mill Celebrates 30th Anniversary in Jackson
The Gerdau mill in Jackson, Tennessee, originated as Florida Steel’s fifth steel mill in operation when it began melting and rolling steel in September 1981. Employees and their families were invited to the mill to celebrate the 30th anniversary. “Thirty years in operation is a great achievement, which I attribute largely to our dedicated work force and the long-standing support of the Jackson community,” said Chris Ervin, vice president and general manager of Gerdau’s Jackson mill. “We are grateful for our success, and the opportunity to celebrate this important anniversary.” The Gerdau mill is one of the city’s top 10 manufacturers, employing approximately 360 people with an annual payroll of about $35.88 million. The Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce helped company leadership see the advantages of selecting Jackson for Florida Steel’s first location in Tennessee, citing its great location for industry and superior transportation system. “We were told the people in the area seemed to have an exceptionally strong work ethic and that turned out to be true,” said Bill Kipp, human resources manager at the Gerdau mill. “We have a significant number of employees who have been with the company more that 20-plus years and close to 20 employees who have worked at the mill since the very first day in operation.” In addition to the company’s involvement with the American Heart Association, the Jackson mill has been a partner in education with North Side High School for 20 years. Other social responsibility partners in the area include Jackson Symphony, the STAR Center’s Kidfest, the Exchange Club and United Way.

Jackson’s Lori Nunnery Appointed to Governor Haslam’s Tourism Task Force
Tourism continues to be a leading industry in Tennessee and specifically in Madison County, generating $148.66 million in direct tourist spending and creating over 1600 jobs. Shortly after his inauguration, Governor Bill Haslam created a “Tourism Task Force” along with Tennessee Department of Tourist Development Commissioner Susan Whitaker, with a goal of putting Tennessee into the top 10 states in terms of out-of-state travel spending. Currently, Tennessee is ranked 18th in the nation. The three chairs of this committee include Jack Soden, Elvis Presley Enterprises, Ted Miller, Dolly Parton Productions and Colin Reed, Gaylord Entertainment. The Jackson Convention and Visitors Bureau’s Lori Nunnery will join 12 tourism leaders from across the state to strategize and identify goals to increase Tennessee tourism spending and job creation. “First of all, I would like to thank Governor Haslam for the opportunity to serve on the Task Force,” Nunnery said. “Appointment to this committee will give Jackson and West Tennessee a voice in the continued growth and development of Tennessee’s tourism product. Jackson is well positioned between Memphis and Nashville and it’s crucial for us to share our distinctive region’s rural attributes to compliment the state’s larger attractions and destinations.” Nunnery will be meeting with West Tennessee various tourism partners to continue the conversation on a local level and will join the Task Force as it begins meeting in the upcoming weeks.

Useful Tips for Small Business Owners/Managers By Ron Acree & Joel Newman, TSBDC Workplace rudeness is one of the major complaints of customers and at the top of the list is the annoyance created by employees using the telephone improperly. From an unfriendly greeting to being put on hold too long, to an ‘unintelligible’ response by an employee, many customers have a good reason to become a ‘former customer’. Here are some suggestions that may help to improve the telephone habits in your workplace: • BEING FRIENDLY The first voice a person hears when calling your business will generally set the tone for a good business conversation. SMILE when answering. By being friendly and professional, a ‘Positive’ impression is achieved. • SPEAK CLEARLY AND DISTINCTLY When answering the phone, say your business’s name followed by your name. Don’t hurry the telephone—take the time to clearly pronounce your name. Also, don’t speak while chewing gum, eating or drinking—it will slur your words and make the caller feel he/she is interrupting. Above all, DON’T SHOUT into the phone but make sure your voice is loud enough to be heard by the caller. • LISTENING Don’t use the phrase, ‘HOLD please’ and then do so without waiting to hear the response from the caller. It is always important to repeat pertinent information back to the caller to avoid confusion. • REMAIN FOCUSED While you are speaking to the customer, don’t answer e-mail, talk to someone nearby, open mail or do other work. If you are taking notes of the conversation on your computer, advise the caller of this. Nothing is more irritating to a caller than to hear the click of computer keys or whispered side conversations. • KEEP THE CALLER INFORMED Should you have to check on something for the caller, inform that person of how long it should take and that you will place him/her on hold. The use of ‘It will take just a second’ is not accurate. Tell the caller it will take several minutes and offer to call back if they cannot hold. • PUT YOUR ENERGY INTO THE CALL If you sound bored or tired on the phone, the caller will consider you unprofessional and uninterested in assisting their request. It sometimes is good to stand up when speaking as it may help you to breathe better and gain some energy and focus. • KEEP YOUR VOICE MAIL CURRENT If you cannot personally answer all calls, make sure that your voice mail is just as professional and friendly as if you are there in person. Always offer to have the caller leave a message, asking for their name and number with a promise to return the call as soon as possible. 5
