This summer, The Jackson Generals released an app for the iPhone and Android that allows users to connect with the team in a whole new way. Fans of the Generals can now quickly look up schedules, results, team rosters, stats, team news, and purchase tickets, all in the palm of their hand. The app also includes a Pringles Park seating chart, map directions to the park, and the current weather forecast. One feature called “Photo Op” even allows users to insert Generals props -- such as a foam finger or a “Sarge” mascot -- into photos and share them with friends via Facebook, Twitter, and email. Complete College Initiative
The Tennessee Chamber of Commerce and Industry is making progress on its “Complete College” initiative. The initiative seeks to transform public higher education through changes in academic, fiscal and administrative policies at the state and institutional level. The first major achievement of the initiative will take effect this fall when all community colleges and universities will offer and accept in transfer a common set of courses. Additionally, the community colleges and universities will now honor the

This is just the first phase of the more extensive Complete College Tennessee Act of 2010. “We in the business community need to continue creating awareness and need for post-secondary completion,” said Suzie Lusk, Director of Events for The Tennessee Chamber of Commerce. “We need to make sure that Tennesseans understand how exponentially their opportunities expand when they have a post-secondary degree,” she said.

Starting July 25, the Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce began posting the Governor’s Daily News summaries on its Facebook and Twitter accounts. The Governor’s summaries are a collection of newsworthy stories from the day from around the state, sent from his Communications office.The summaries are hosted on The Chamber’s Scribd account, a social publishing site. Chamber President and CEO Kyle Spurgeon said, “The Governor’s Daily News Summaries provide a great
overview of news stories across Tennessee. Promotions, accomplishments & Special Recognition University of Memphis preparing lambuth campus for class
The University of Memphis will begin offering classes at what was formerly Lambuth University in Jackson, Tenn., on Saturday, August 27, the official start of the University’s fall 2011 semester. The University of Memphis has had a presence in Jackson since 1955. Since then thousands of students have obtained their college education at least partly through the University’s classes taught at Jackson State Community College. All classes formerly taught at JSCC, as well as new course offerings, will now be taught at the Lambuth location. In announcing the University’s increased presence in Jackson, President Shirley Raines said, “We are honored to be able to offer more educational opportunities as a public university to the citizens of Jackson and West Tennessee. Lambuth University has given its students and alumni a great legacy, and the University of Memphis will continue, and will build upon, Lambuth’s fine educational reputation.” For students planning to attend classes in Jackson this fall, information sessions were held August 9-10. Students were able to meet individually with academic advisers and representatives from admissions, financial aid, housing and other U of M offices. Both sessions were held in the Jack Morris Ballroom of the Wilder College Union building on the Lambuth campus. Chamber Hires membership development coordinator Carolyn S. Vaughan joined the Chamber August 1 as the Membership Development Coordinator. In her position, she helps area businesses that have not yet joined The Chamber learn about the benefits of membership. She is a native Jacksonian with experience in sales and marketing. “We are thrilled to have Carolyn join our team,” said Lisa Cothran, Manager of Membership Development for The Chamber. “Her sales and marketing background, as well as her knowledge of the Jackson area, will be assets as she recruits area businesses to join The Chamber.” Carolyn graduated with a B.A. in Business Administration from the University of Mississippi. She currently lives in Jackson with her husband and two children, and is actively involved in her local church.
Volunteer of the month Spotlight
The Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce that Rick Willams is the August “Volunteer of the Month.” Rick has been a Chamber Ambassador since 1998 and Ambassador Chairman in 2011. He has been involved in radio for years and also had a four year stint in the print media. Williams was born and raised in Milan. Williams is currently the Marketing Consultant for News/Talk 101.5. He has worked for The Jackson Sun, Clear Channel Radio and has been involved in the music business for over 30 years. Along with volunteering for The Chamber, Williams has done work for The Star Center. “I chose to volunteer because I love to meet new people and support the City of Jackson,” Williams said. “I hope to get involved with Music Therapy sessions soon too.”

Xerox Corporation announced that Memphisbased XMC, Inc., has been awarded new territories in Chattanooga and Northern Georgia. XMC will now serve an additional five counties in Southeast Tennessee and a sevencounty North Georgia territory. With this expansion, XMC now serves an
area stretching from Little Rock to East Tennessee plus key markets in northern Mississippi and Alabama. XMC originated as a subsidiary of an office supply company and initially served only Jackson and surrounding rural West Tennessee. When Jackson native Bob Hamilton, president and CEO, took full ownership in 1992 he saw the potential of the company and the Xerox product line.

union university named to “great colleges to work for” honor roll Union University was recently named to The Chronicle of Higher Education’s list of “Great Colleges to Work For.” The university was one of only 42 other colleges and universities in the nation to achieve this honor. The Chronicle determines the schools on the list by an annual survey of nearly 44,000 employees at 310 colleges and universities nationwide. Of this number, 111 receive recognition for specific best practices and policies, while only 42 achieve “Honor Roll” status. Union is the only college in Tennessee named to the “Honor Roll” list. “We are deeply grateful for this high honor, this lofty recognition from The Chronicle of Higher Education,” Union President David S. Dockery said. “I want to congratulate our marvelous faculty and staff, as well as the high quality students, who contribute each and every day to this special academic community. We are certainly thankful for the dedicated members of

Seeing the results of networking doesn’t happen overnight, but it really pays off if you are patient and put time into it. Chamber Connection: What are some of your challenges and future goals? Raines Design: Our challenge is to create awareness of our company. If someone needs a brochure designed and printed, we want them to at least think of us. Many people still don’t know that we are here, and if they do, they may know we design logos but don’t know that we can create a web site. Our main goal this year is grow our company. We were a home-based business for several years, which had always worked due to the nature of our work. Once we decided to expand and offer full service printing we opened our location on North Highland Avenue. The move has been fantastic and we hope to continue increasing our client base and expand our staff by the beginning of 2012. 7
