Jackson Ranks in Top Metros of 2012:

Site Selection Magazine Recognizes Jackson by Economic Development Projects Jackson has been recognized as a “Top Ten Metro Area” in the U.S. based on the population category of fewer than 200,000, released by the Site Selection Magazine. Jackson, with a total of nine projects in 2012, was tied for 7th place, along with Midland, Texas; Decatur, Alabama; Saginaw, Michigan; Victoria, Texas; Winchester, Virginia; and Winchester, West Virginia. The ranking is based upon the number of corporate real estate facility projects announced in Jackson’s metropolitan statistical area (MSA) during 2012. “We can attribute this ranking to a strong year in all of our industries,” said City of Jackson Mayor Jerry Gist. “These industries chose to grow here and made large contributions to our community. We appreciate their investment in our city.” To be included in a project database, a project must be $1 million or more in capital investment, create at least 50 new jobs or add at least 20,000 square feet of new space. Projects must also be corporate in nature, such as office, industrial, warehouse, flex, data center, call center and more. Projects that are not counted are retail space, restaurants, hospitals, schools, churches, government facilities or other institutional space. In 2012, Jackson added a bevy of new jobs as existing companies created 528 jobs. “Jackson continues to improve thanks in part to our industries,” said Roy Heatherly, Board Chairman for the Jackson Chamber. “By creating 528 jobs, our local industries invested a total of $84,585,422 to our community. We are always excited about the additional jobs we can bring to Jackson.” It was in March 2012 that Armstrong World Industries, a global leader in the design and manufacturing of floors, ceilings and cabinets announced the addition of a third production shift. The shift addition created 95 jobs that were added to its Jackson facility. Another large announcement came from LyondellBasell, which expanded its polypropylene compounding facility by adding a sixth production line at the site. LyondellBasell’s expansion helped meet the growing needs of its customer base while creating eight permanent jobs and 30 indirect jobs in the area. “We’re working to create the best environment for creating jobs and expanding existing businesses in Jackson and Madison County,” said Madison County Mayor Jimmy Harris. “In the past five years, 602 jobs were created by new companies while 2,477 jobs were created by existing companies. With those jobs, a total of $398,665,819 was invested into Jackson and Madison County.” 2012 LyondellBasell Expansion

West Tennessee Healthcare Foundation Announces New Record

The West Tennessee Healthcare Foundation announces a new record of assets. Since its beginning in 1984, the West Tennessee Healthcare Foundation has worked to improve the health and quality of life to those living in Jackson and West Tennessee. With very humble beginnings, the Foundation’s first project was to provide a new type of technology called a “Life Line” unit where the elderly and those with limited mobility could alert authorities in case of an emergency. From this first project, the Foundation has grown to become a leader in charitable causes and support. Today the Foundation provides charitable support to nearly 400 “funds” that add to the quality of life of the Jackson and West Tennessee communities. In 1987, board treasurer Lawson Crain announced that the Foundation had $53,315.00 in funds. By March of 1997, the Foundation’s assets had grown to slightly more than $2 million. Ten years later (2007) the assets had grown to $10 million. By June of 2008, in the midst of the Recession, the assets had grown to exceed $15 million. By the end of January of 2013, the Foundation had exceeded $24 million in assets. “This financial record places the WTH Foundation in a position to do more good in our community,” stated Bobby Walden, board member since 2007. “It delights me to see this wonderful organization prosper. Our board has worked hard to manage our investments. Our staff has worked diligently to bring in new gifts. This is a wonderful day for Jackson and West Tennessee,” stated Robert Caldwell, current board chair. Today the West Tennessee Healthcare Foundation reaches nearly every aspect of our communities. Endowments have grown to ensure the perpetual support of the arts, education, and special needs children, as well as historic preservation. “Each year it is impressive to see the growth of the Foundation. We are blessed to have an organization that compliments so many good segments of our community. In Downtown Jackson we will be unveiling a memorial to one of our country’s greatest men, M. D. Anderson, a Jackson native. Thanks to the Foundation and its community leadership, we will unveil the monument later this spring,” stated Jerry Gist, Mayor of Jackson.
