Chamber Employee to Transition to Part-Time Judy Renshaw, Senior Vice President, Business & Community Services with the Jackson Chamber, has announced that she will transition to a part time capacity starting on January 1, 2014. Renshaw will continue to oversee the chamber’s leadership development program, Leadership Jackson, as well as the Leadership Jackson Alumni Association. “The chamber has provided many opportunities to grow during my 38+ years,” Renshaw said. “Working in every position, except industrial development, I have had the opportunity to see our community from multiple lenses. Being involved in an organization that has the respect of the community and is a driver for positive change has been fascinating to watch and be engaged.” Renshaw graduated from the U.S. Chamber Institute of Organizational Management; American Chamber of Commerce Executives’ Leadership Development Program at Center for Creative Leadership; Dale Carnegie Course; Association of Leadership Professionals; and WestStar. “Judy is one of the most admired Chamber of Commerce leaders in Tennessee and the United States,” said Kyle Spurgeon, President/CEO, Jackson Chamber. “Her tenure at the Jackson Chamber has been marked by success after success, particularly in the area of leadership development and small business.” Soon after beginning her career at the chamber, Renshaw helped oversee the development of the chamber’s leadership programs, Leadership Jackson, and the youth leadership program, Leadership University. “Leadership Jackson and Leadership University have done more than any other program to better prepare individuals for various leadership positions in our community,” Spurgeon said. “The chamber’s small business programs have grown and evolved under Judy’s direction and continue to provide opportunities for the many small business members served by the Chamber. She will continue to lead and play a vital role with our leadership programs.” A come and go reception for Renshaw was held on Wednesday, December 18 at the Jackson Chamber from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.

Thirty Business Professionals Graduate from Leadership Program Thirty local business professionals graduated from the Jackson Chamber’s 2013 Leadership Jackson class on Thursday, December 12 at the Carl Grants Events Center at Union University. This class is the 35th class to go through the Leadership Program since its inception in 1979. Leadership Jackson, the chamber’s adult leadership development program, gives business professionals employed with companies that are chamber members the opportunity to better understand the community, the opportunities and the challenges it faces. The three-month program gives class members the chance to visit community landmarks, meet with area leaders and participate in weekly sessions about topics impacting Jackson-Madison County, including education, healthcare and government. “There is no better way to become better acquainted with the community of Jackson, it’s residents, it’s current leadership and opportunities to help improve the quality of life than by participating in the Leadership Jackson pro- ABOVE: Leadership Jackson Class of 2013 gram,” said Christopher Doyle, CEO of King Technologies and Class Spokesperson for the graduating class. “The City of Jackson has a lot to offer beneath the visible surface. Those offerings are best discovered by being involved and taking an active role in the community and organizations serving the community. The Jackson Chamber, the Leadership Jackson program, our City and County civil servants, local business and non-profits are what make Jackson one of the top communities in the country.” During the graduation ceremony, class members were recognized for their achievements with an award ceremony and all class members received their Leadership Jackson graduate certificate of completion. Class Spokesperson selected by the class to share their reflections and impact of Leadership Jackson was Chris Doyle, King Technologies. The class also selected Ryan Porter, Jackson Chamber, as the 2014 Class Social Chair, and Carrie Brown Campbell, University School of Jackson, as the Vice Chair. Porter and Campbell will be responsible for scheduling class meetings and will also coordinate the 2014 Alumni Social. Angie Lowery, Merrill Lynch, was selected to be Vice Chair of Leadership Jackson in 2014 to serve with Josh Clarke, Union University, who served as Vice Chair in 2013 and will assume Chairmanship in 2014. Landon Preston, Union University, was recognized for his outstanding leadership as Vice Chair of Leadership Jackson in 2012 and Chair for 2013. Class members were also recognized for their commitment and personal growth with the jewel and diamond awards. Jewel award recipients were Lindsay Dawkins, R.I.F.A.; Andrew Long, BancorpSouth; Hermes Lee, Smith Seckman Reid, Inc.; Amanda Bevis, Tennessee Center for Applied Technology. Matt Huskey, Gerdau, received the class’ highest honor – the diamond award, for his commitment in surpassing requirements in all aspects of Leadership Jackson. Past alumni of Leadership Jackson were also recognized. John Myers, Commercial Bank and Trust Company, Class of 2007, received the Community Observance of Personal Excellence (COPE) Award; Ronnie Morris, Express Employment, Class of 2010, with the Emerging Leader Award; Charles H. Byrd, Sr., Byrd & Byrd, Attorneys at Law, PLLC, Class of 1995, with the Harbert Alexander Award for Servant Leadership. Martin Jelinek, The Jackson Sun, and Class of 2001 graduate, received a National Award for Leadership. He was nominated by the LJAA Board for the Distinguished Leadership Award through the Association of Leadership Professionals. The Association is a national association of leadership programs across the country. “The 2013 Class has embraced ‘servant leadership’ since the program began in September,” said Judy Renshaw, Senior Vice President, Business & Community Services, Jackson Chamber. “The more they learned about our community, the more they invested. Many nonprofit organizations and the clients they serve have been enriched by Leadership Jackson. It will be exciting to see their continued impact in our community in the future.” During the graduation ceremony, the Leadership Jackson Alumni Association (LJAA) Board of Directors announced that it will be officially renaming its 2014 academic scholarship to the “Judy Renshaw Leadership Jackson Alumni Association Scholarship,” in honor of Renshaw and her 35 years of developing the Leadership Jackson program. Renshaw recently announced in November that she will transition to a part-time capacity starting on January 1, 2014, where she will continue to oversee Leadership Jackson. The Jackson Chamber will be investing $500 per year through 2024 to help fund the new scholarship. Individuals and/or donors wishing to make a donation in Renshaw’s honor to the scholarship can do so through the chamber’s foundation. A donation of $310 was presented by the class to the Exchange Club-Carl Perkins Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse – Adopt a Teen Program. The funds will help the Center to buy Christmas for three deserving teens they serve. Class members also gave presentations on group community projects they selected,

Leadership Jackson Alumni Association Spotlight Kristi Anderson, 2013 Leadership Jackson Alumni Association Board of Directors Company: Christian Culbreath, DDS, MS Job Title: Business Manager Q: Why did you choose to help with the Leadership Jackson Alumni Association? A: In one simple word, influence. I am honored to be involved with a group of leaders who want to instill awareness of ownership in the community. I like being on the pulse of making a difference in lives of those in our area. Q: What were you looking forward to this year with the 2013 class? A: We have had a fantastic class in Leadership Jackson this year. It has been amazing to watch the energy and desire in each of them. They have used their unique talents to work together to have a positive effect on this community. Q: What was the most important piece of information that you learned during your Leadership Jackson experience? A: I would say the most important things that I learned were how to be informed of my city and county, learning how important it is to have the many facets (i.e. education, business, healthcare), and how to work together to make our city and county attractive for economic development. Q: What advice would you give the upcoming 2014 class? A: My advice would be to not miss any opportunities that you have and to experience all that LJ has to offer. From the homework assignments to being equipped with leadership skills, this program is making not only a difference in a class member, but also in his/her ability to contribute to our community.
Q: What was your favorite memory from Leadership Jackson? A: Like everyone else, I found C.O.P.E. and our homework assignments to be “bucket lists” experiences. However, the relationships I made with other like-minded people and the way we bonded together to make an impact with our community project was priceless. Q: If you could describe Leadership Jackson in one word, what would it be? A: Being a sports fan, I will describe Leadership Jackson as a “Play Maker”. Leadership Jackson equips you with knowledge, instills a challenge in you and places ownership in you to go out and make a difference in the community. I want to be a “play maker” in my community!

CHAMBER NEWS Jackson Regional Partnership Hires New Executive Director
The Jackson Regional Partnership (JRP), along with the Jackson Chamber, announced Friday, December 13, that Kingsley Brock will serve as the new Executive Director for the partnership. Brock has served as Senior Advisor and Lead Project Manager for the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development for 12 years and is presently responsible for managing large recruitment projects. “I have always enjoyed working in the JRP region and have many friends in the area,” Brock said. “The idea of joining JRP and using my experience and knowledge to help create jobs in the region really interested me. The idea of focusing on a specific region of the state was very attractive.” As the new Executive Director for JRP, Brock will respond to regional leads obtained through Partnership marketing efforts; manage ABOVE: Kingsley Brock will responses to RFIs/RFPs and project proposals on behalf of the Partnership; manage regional project activity; serve as a liaison with the serve as the new Executive Tennessee Department of Economic & Community Development, TVA Economic Development, and their project managers; serve as a Director for the Jackson liaison with regional Chamber Executives and local economic development professionals on prospecting and prospect activity; develop Regional Partnership. and implement project management protocol with Partnership members; conduct monthly “Project Update Committee” meetings with Partnership members; and provide support and technical assistance to Partnership members when they have projects they are working outside the Partnership network. “My initial focus will be to gain more in-depth knowledge about each county and community, the sites and buildings in the JRP region, and meet with folks I may not know yet,” Brock said. “My primary long term focus will be to use my experience to help promote job growth in the area.” The Partnership (JRP) includes the nine counties of Carroll, Chester, Crockett, Gibson, Hardeman, Haywood, Henderson, Madison and McNairy. By promoting regionalism and the importance of working together, JRP members feel they will be more successful in attracting new jobs and investment to the area. They know that communities and workers in several counties benefit whenever an industry expands or locates to the area. “Brock is highly respected in the economic development profession across Tennessee, the Southeast and the nation,” said Brad Hurley, President/CEO, Carroll County Chamber of Commerce. “Brock’s knowledge of how the State of Tennessee handles projects and his working knowledge of consultants and companies are a great asset for us to have on our side.” During his career, Brock has acted as the state’s lead project manager on a number of significant projects, such as Mars Petcare’s new headquarters; the R&D facility in Thompson Station, Tennessee; the Federated Department Store’s 900,000 sq. foot distribution center in Portland, Oregon; the relocation of Oreck Vacuums; and Jackson National Life regional headquarters in Cool Springs, Tenn. Prior to joining the State, Brock was President of King Lizard Music, Inc., a Nashville based music publishing company. “The addition of Kingsley Brock to JRP and his influence to the overall economic development effort in West Tennessee is huge,” said Roy Heatherly, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Jackson Chamber. “Brock brings knowledge, contacts and years of experience in a multitude of economic development areas.” Brock is a graduate of North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina, has three children and lives in Nashville, Tenn.
