Partners-in-Education Program Celebrates 30th Anniversary

For thirty years, businesses have been connected to education. On Friday, May 24, the Jackson Chamber celebrated the 30th Anniversary of the Partners-inEducation (PIE) program at its annual Quarterly Membership/Education Recognition Breakfast. “For 30 years now, schools and businesses in our community have worked together,” said Shirley Jones, Vice President, Public Affairs for the Jackson Chamber. “Because of PIE, schools have gained countless resources over the years – some time, some in-kind and some monetary.” The PIE program began in 1983, with seven partnerships and was started by the late Dr. Tommy Allen, who was with the Jackson City School System. After the program was developed, it was turned over to the chamber for administration. The chamber has served as the liaison between the business and education community since. The program currently has 269 partnerships. At the breakfast, Golden Apple Awards were presented to local schools and businesses. In order to receive a Golden Apple Award, the schools and businesses had to coordinate 10 or more activities with their partners during the 2011-2012 school year. All activities that were coordinated between partnerships had to be reported in writing to Shirley Jones, vice president of public affairs for the chamber, to receive credit. The Bank of Jackson, the new sponsor for all of the chamber’s education programs, was recognized at the chamber’s breakfast “We are excited to have The Bank of Jackson supporting education in Jackson,” Jones said. “I have the privilege of partnering with them and I cannot say enough about their wonderful support.”

Leadership Jackson Alumni Association Spotlight Landon Preston, 2013 Leadership Jackson Chairman Q: When did you go through Leadership Jackson? A: 2011 Q: Why did you choose to help with the upcoming Leadership Jackson class? A: Because I have come to love Jackson and West Tennessee, and want to do whatever I can to foster strong servant leaders in our community. Q: What are you looking forward to this year with the new class? A: The people! LJ and Jackson are both great because of the wonderful people of which it’s composed. I cannot wait to get to know 30 new people and grow with them while watching them grow to serve our city.

Q: What was the most important piece of information that you learned during your Leadership Jackson experience? A: The significance of trusting others wisdom and vision over just my own. I was amazed at the gifts, skills and heart of the 29 people around me, and what we could accomplish when we worked together. Q: What advice would you give the upcoming class? A: What you get out of this program depends on the extent to which you give of yourself. If you are open to change, new ideas and growth, you will learn more about yourself and how to lead than you could ever imagine. Q: What was your funniest memory from Leadership Jackson? A: Watching one of our City Councilmen (Scott Conger) and County Commissioners (Scott Brown) perform a mock vehicle pull over with the Jackson SWAT team. You can guess who ended up running away. Q: If you could describe Leadership Jackson in one word, what would it be? A: Transformational

TWELVE JACKSON-MADISON COUNTY SCHOOLS HONORED BY ALLIANCE FOR A HEALTHIER GENERATION FOR FIGHTING CHILDHOOD OBESITY

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation, founded by the American Heart Association and the Clinton Foundation, will recognize 12 Jackson-Madison County schools for transforming their campuses into healthier places for students and staff. To earn the National Recognition Award these schools improved their nutrition services and physical activity programs to meet or exceed stringent standards set by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation’s Healthy Schools Program. The Healthy Schools Program provides professional development such as onsite and virtual trainings with school health experts, access to a customer support center, science-based resources, and success stories--at no cost--to more than 17,000 schools nationwide to help them reverse the childhood obesity epidemic. Schools are eligible for Bronze, Silver, or Gold National Recognition Awards based on their level of achievement. Representatives from the recognized schools will travel to the Alliance’s National Healthy Schools Program Forum in the fall and receive awards for increasing healthy eating and physical activity. The following Jackson-Madison County Schools have been awarded Bronze this school year: Alexander Elementary, Denmark Elementary, Lincoln Magnet Elementary, Madison Academic Magnet High and Montessori Magnet School at Bemis. The following Jackson-Madison County Schools have been awarded Silver this school year: I. B. Tigrett Middle, Liberty Technology Magnet High, Malesus Elementary, North Side High, Nova Elementary, South Elementary and South Side High. While all honored schools have shown an excellence in physical and health education opportunities, improved healthier meals, and overall school wellness policy implementation, here are a few highlights of why these schools were chosen: •Liberty Technology Magnet High and North Side High challenged their school staffs to a weight loss and physical fitness challenge. Nearly 100 percent of both school staffs competed in healthy eating and activity challenges. •All schools removed non-Alliance approved items from their vending machines and replaced them with food options that comply with the Alliance’s nutrition guidelines. •The national OrganWise health education program was incorporated at the Elementary level so that schools could increase the minutes and types of comprehensive health education offered. Proud Sponsor of the Jackson •Alexander Elementary implemented Phase II of their playground project so that students have additional Chamber Education Programs options for physical activity during the school day. •All of the schools showed their dedication to the community and to physical activity by participating in Jump Start Jackson and intramural and non-competitive sports. •All recognized schools added additional servings of fruit or vegetables to school meals as needed per the Alliance nutrition guidelines.

SELF-ASSESSMENT TOOL HELPS WEST TENNESSEE AREA FAMILIES AVOID THE DANGERS OF CAREGIVER DISTRESS

Nearly one-third of adults living in Jackson, Madison and Gibson Counties and much of West Tennessee are family caregivers who could be at risk for heart disease, diabetes, depression and various other physical and emotional maladies as a result of caregiver distress, a potentially dangerous condition brought on by the pressures of caring for a senior loved one. Studies increasingly point to caregiving as a leading stressor for families. In fact, one U.S. study revealed that more than half (52.8%) of those caring for individuals with diseases including cancer or Alzheimer’s had scores indicating depression.* In response to this growing issue, the local Home Instead Senior Care® office has launched a public awareness campaign – Family Caregiver Stress Relief at FamilyCaregiverStressRelief.com – to help family caregivers determine if they are at risk for distress and to minimize problems before they escalate. Included in the program are two new tools: The Are You a Caregiver Quiz, which is designed to help a family caregiver self-identify and recognize the role of a caregiver, and the Family Caregiver Distress Assessment, adapted for the Home Instead Senior Care network by Dr. Peter Vitaliano of the University of Washington. The assessment allows caregivers to determine their risk for distress and resulting emotional and physical issues, including depression, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity. “So many spouses and adult children are unaware of their potential risk of caregiver distress because they don’t see themselves as caregivers,” said Bryson McQuiston, owner of the local Home Instead Senior Care office. “These new resources enable them to understand their role, the stresses they may face as a caregiver, and how that stress might lead to more serious health effects.” A recent Home Instead Senior Care study discovered that caregivers are prone to hiding their emotions and, as a result, their health suffers. Approximately 74 percent of caregivers who hide their feelings report fatigue, 53 percent report difficulty sleeping, 37 percent report depression, and 30 percent weight gain or loss. Research shows that certain characteristics make family caregivers more vulnerable to caregiver distress, the top being: • Gender: Women report more psychological distress than men (however, male caregivers have more negative physiological responses to caregiving, including higher blood sugar and insulin levels, poorer cholesterol and immune function, and obesity). • Reluctance to ask for help: Caregivers who won’t ask for help are setting themselves up for the kind of exhaustion that can lead to distress. • Chronic Illness: Caregivers who are already sick or have existing medical conditions, such as coronary disease, hypertension and cancer, are more vulnerable to additional negative health effects resulting from caregiver stress. “It’s important for caregivers to understand that stress can impact one’s ability to care. If they don’t care for themselves, they may put their senior loved ones at risk. Whether it’s support groups, stress management techniques or respite help, caregivers need to realize the importance of managing their health, too,” said McQuiston.
