Chamber Welcomes Members of the 2012 Leadership Jackson Class The Jackson Chamber is pleased to announce the nominees who were selected for its 2012 Leadership Jackson class. Leadership Jackson is a leadership development program for those in our community who demonstrate leadership potential. Sponsored by the chamber, the program is an opportunity for local professionals to learn more about the community challenges it faces and engage to make a positive difference. The 2012 class participated in a six-hour information session in early September to get acquainted and learn more about what their Leadership Jackson experience will entail. The session was led by Leadership Jackson 2012 Chair Ty Cowles, Manager Business Analysis, Jackson Energy Authority, and the program’s Vice Chair Landon Preston, Director of Donor Relations, Union University. Following the session, Leadership Jackson class members went on a two-day retreat. “This class has a strong desire to make a positive difference in our community by investing their time and talents,” said Judy Renshaw, Senior Vice President, Business & Community Services for the Jackson Chamber. “The Jackson Chamber and community just launched a campaign about ‘Jackson: Connect Here’. Leadership Jackson is a driving force for connections, but not just any connection. It is a driving force for connec-

tions with knowledge and passion to be a trustee in our community. Class members work together to make Jackson-Madison County a city that is setting the standard, and being a model community in every area of importance. Leadership Jackson instills community pride and the desire to invest more in your company, your employees and your community.” Class members will continue to meet weekly for sessions on various topics. A leadership skill building component is incorporated into each session. Leaders in key areas, such as health care, criminal justice, economic development, quality of life, education and government will share an overview of the present state, challenges and future vision. This information provides the class with a broad understanding of the inter-workings of Jackson-Madison County and a big picture view. It also engages them in a self-analysis of where they can best make a positive impact by getting involved or by being a resource for their company or sphere of influence.

West Tennessee Healthcare Foundation Establishes M. D. Anderson Memorial The West Tennessee Healthcare Foundation has joined with Jackson Downtown Development and the Susan Vaughan Foundation in the development of the M. D. Anderson Memorial Plaza and to honor the memory of four great men from Jackson: M. D. Anderson, Will Clayton, Frank Anderson and Ben Clayton. The M. D. Anderson Memorial Plaza was presented by Congressman Steven Fincher, approved by Congress and signed by President Barak Obama on Sunday, January 3. Barbara Day, a two-time patient at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and her husband Dickie, realized that M. D. Anderson was from Jackson. Anderson, along with Will Clayton, another Jackson native, had not been recognized for their successes and contributions. Knowing the plaza between the two federal buildings in Downtown Jackson had no identity, the Days thought the plaza would be a perfect location for a memorial to honor these great men. “Jacksonians will be amazed when they visit the plaza and learn what these men and their families contributed to Jackson and the world,” said project leader Dickie Day. Financial estimates on the cost of the memorial plaza exceed $75,000. Plans for the M. D. Anderson Memorial Plaza include a historical marker from the Tennessee Historic Commission; an entrance sign and a nine-foot granite monolith that tells the story of M. D. Anderson, Will Clayton, Ben Clayton and Frank E. Anderson. The Susan Vaughan Foundation has awarded the West Tennessee Healthcare Foundation $30,000 toward the project. Susan Vaughan was the daughter of Will Clayton. “We are so proud to honor these great men who moved on to greater successes,” said Frank McMeen, President of the West Tennessee Healthcare Foundation. “While their businesses expanded beyond our city, their hearts and families were still in this wonderful community.”
Medical Center EMS – Everyday Heroes Go Pink! Medical Center EMS has partnered with West Tennessee Women’s Center, Signs First and Mitchell’s Automotive to place pink ribbons on each of its ambulances during the month of October. The ribbons will help to call attention to breast cancer awareness, early detection and prevention. “We respond to emergencies every day; it’s what we do,” said Mark Walker, Shift Manager/Outreach Coordinator, Medical Center EMS. “But as a part of this community where we live, work and raise our families, we are affected by the impact of cancer like everyone else. We all know someone affected by cancer and as healthcare professionals, we would love to see an end to it.” In addition to pink ribbons on the ambulances, the EMS education unit, affectionately known as “Hope,” will have pink striping and pink stars of life. There will be numerous community events during the month of October in which Hope will be present. Each day of the month, if not at a scheduled event, Hope will be displayed at various locations around Jackson. Medical Center EMS would like to thank the Women’s Center for allowing it to be an integral part of this year’s breast cancer awareness education. It also extends a special thank you to Mitchell’s Automotive and Signs First for the art work on all the EMS units. For further information call Tammy Hardee at (731) 512-1548.
