CORRECTIONAL EDUCATION PROGRAM @ JACKSON COLLEGE
The Return of Face-to-Face It has been a long, very long pandemic! The Jackson College corrections education team and instructors have missed seeing the faces of our students as much you have missed us; if not more! We are excited to begin transitioning out of the global pandemic caused by COVID-19. We understand that the last 18 months have been difficult on all fronts! We applaud you for your perseverance and determination in staying the course to complete your classes and degree programs. While distance learning is not the same as face-to-face learning; it has provided us with the opportunity to keep the program going during the pandemic. As we begin this fall
Semester Changes CEP semesters, dates, and names are all changing! Moving forward all CEP semesters will be comprised of 10 learning units that are covered over the span of 13-week semesters. The academic year will begin with fall semester beginning September 20, 2022. What was once called “winter semester” will now officially be called spring semester beginning in February 2022. The formally known as “spring semester” will now be officially known as summer semester beginning in May of 2022.

It is our hope that we will be able to return to normal operations and bring your classes to you fully face-to-face beginning in January 2022.
Programs of Study Currently, JCCEP offers five interrelated programs of study: • General Transfer Certificate • Certificate in Business Administration • Associate in Arts • Associate of Applied Science: Business Administration We encourage students participating in the JCCEP program to work towards certificates and/or a degree instead of general interest courses. Many classes satisfy the Michigan Transfer Agreement, providing ease in transfer to public community colleges, four-year colleges and universities in Michigan.
Paying for College They say nothing in life is free. Jackson College is challenging that narrative through its Corrections Education Program. Current students and would be students have several different ways in which they can pay for college; earn an associate degree pre-release and have no student loan debt. This is a win-win for both the college and its students. Ways of paying for college are: Federal Pell Grant: Full cost of tuition and expenses paid for. Students must be within 30-96 months of release, have no outstanding student loans, and meet federal income guidelines. Michigan Reconnect Grant: Full cost of tuition and expenses paid for. Michigan Reconnect is a scholarship program that pays for you to attend your in-district community college and covers a large tuition discount if you attend an out-ofdistrict community college. You can use the scholarship to complete an associate degree or a skill certificate program.

Vision JCCEP equips students with the essential life skills necessary for positive reentry, life success, and sustainability through higher education.
To be eligible, you must: • Be at least 25 years old when you apply • Have lived in Michigan for a year or more • Have a high school diploma or equivalent • Have not yet completed a college degree (associate or bachelor’s). Peggy J. Black Scholarship: This scholarship, in honor of Ms. Black, is to assist self-pay students (those that are not eligible for Pell or Reconnect). Students must be currently enrolled and have a 2.0 or greater GPA. Awarded students will receive up to one four credit class free per semester. Looking Forward Scholarship: This scholarship is also for self-pay students (those that are not eligible for Pell or Reconnect). It is designed to help students pay for college and continue to make forward progress towards their academic goals. Students must be currently enrolled and have a 2.0 or greater GPA. Awarded students will receive up to one four credit class free per semester.

A Win in Washington Jackson College, along with many other institutions of higher ed., Department of Corrections, and the Vera Institute of Justice have lobbied long and hard both at the state and federal levels to reinstate Pell Grants fully for incarcerated individuals. In December 2020, Congress lifted a 26-year ban on Pell Grants for incarcerated students. The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) Simplification Act, which restores access to Pell Grants for people in prison, will make it possible for thousands to access higher education, and in turn create
opportunities for them to secure well-paying jobs, find stable housing, provide for their families, and reintegrate into their communities when they leave prison. Key components of this act are: The removal of banning of federal aid for students that have not registered for selective service, preventing students from receiving federal student aid who have a drug conviction while previously receiving federal student aid, and removing the limitations of eligible candidates based off their earliest release date (ERD). The Department of Education has been given until July of 2023 to enact all these changes.
