A Guide to the Coolest Gifts in Jackson
instance, an old silver vase you’ll never use can dress up your desk as a pen holder. On that note, rather than pointing in a particular direction, here are some suggestions—from an endless list of possibilities—for kitsch collections you can start. You can also use a little kitsch to add a zest to your place—just be careful about turning it into clutter.
“Domino: The Book of Decorating: A Room-by-Room Guide to Creating a Home That Makes You Happy” Deborah Needleman, Sara Ruffin Costello and Dara Caponigro (Simon & Schuster, 2008, $32) If you were a fan of the now-defunct Domino magazine, then you’ll love this book! In the signature style of the mag, the book offers tips on solving small-space dilemmas, how to mix and match styles and color, and layer patterns and textures. “Absolutely Organize Your Family: Simple Solutions to Control Clutter, Schedules & Spaces” Debbie Lillard (Betterway Home, 2010, $16.99) This book gives practical advice for tackling everyday clutter and inexpensive storage ideas. The author breaks everything down into problem, solution and the pros and cons.
“Crafting a Meaningful Home: 27 DIY Projects to Tell Stories, Hold Memories, and Celebrate Family Heritage” by Meg Mateo Ilasco (STC Craft/A Melanie Falick Book, 2010, $24.95) This book is filled with unique projects—dad’s patchwork quilt, love notes wall art and family crests—that allow you to prominently display intimate parts of your life in an artsy and deeply personal sort of way. Each chapter is dedicated to a single project and tells the story of the artist who created it.

“Vintage Vavoom: Romantic Decorating with One-of-aKind Finds,” Editors of Romantic Homes Magazine (Clarkson Potter, 2007, $35) The style, vintage vavoom, is defined as mixing the best decorative looks of the past with the sensibilities and passions of today. The authors show how to use kitsch and color and combine contrasting elements with one another, and how to shop for vintage items.

Clocks—You probably don’t want to have a whole room lined with clocks, but a vintage-style, or actual vintage clock in a home can really add some unique pizzazz to time-telling. Or, perhaps you could revive the cuckoo-clock craze. Action figures or old dolls—Ranging from Star Wars collections to Care Bears to vintage Howdy Doody dolls, these can add nostalgia to a place, whether you have children or not. Old games—Like dolls, they can really bring out the kid in anyone, whether they’re reproductions or the real deal. Snow globes—Travel the world and bring one back from every continent, every state. Best if they cost less than $5. Americana—Old washboards, sleds, instruments. Glass collection—Old lady or not, glass is pretty. And it can be valuable, too. Ceramics—Teapots, mugs … the list is endless. Salt and pepper shakers—You’ve probably seen these in a relative’s house or that quirky little eatery around the corner. Paperweights—From state-named to scorpion-embedded to blown glass, this kind of collection can get out of hand if you choose to go down this path. Clothes & Jewelry—Why not get into it with matching apparel? Your collection could be screenprinted shirts with your favorite ’80s cartoon stars, like Wonder Woman or the Hulk, or ’50s-style dresses or costume jewelry, like baublebeaded necklaces or anything with faux-crystal. Animals—You can find these in any variation or material. Be it “all hens, all the time,” or a smorgasbord of creatures, this theme could be great for a child’s room. Magical stuff—And on the theme of decorating for the young ones, perhaps it’s time to start that unicorn collection you always wanted.

T
he definition of “kitsch” is sort of hard to pin down these days. Kitsch is often used by the “shabby chic” to adorn their abodes, but the word’s origin rambles around in elitist conversations about high or low art. It can be anything now—ranging from mass-produced Van Gogh mugs to figurine collections to “vintage” ’50s-inspired art reproductions. Once really into blue glass, I had a whole collection of it in the form of vases and candleholders next to a window. My friend called me an “old lady” because of my collection. In other words: gaudy. The confusion between kitschy, campy and “real” arts and antiques prevails. What I considered to be beautiful shades of cobalt blue, my friend considered tacky. And that’s the thing: Taste is subjective. Whether your treasures come from second-hand stores or from catalogues or boutiques, it doesn’t matter how educated you are or how much design experience you have—no one knows better than you what you like. So go on with your garden gnomes-ofthe-world collection. Whatever the case, kitsch hunting via the scouring of thrift or antique shops, garage sales or flea markets can provide hours of joy. You never know what you might come across or learn about pop culture. If you find something you like but it doesn’t seem useful, another idea is re-purposing objects to suit your needs. For

Cookin’ Up Some Christmas Gifts
by Crawford Grabowski
O
ver the past few years, I’ve realized that most of the adults I know, including myself, have way too much stuff. Nobody really needs another coffee mug, picture frame or cute item to put on the shelf. The shelves are all full. Because of this, I try to give gifts that are consumable, and in my family, this means food. As a kid, my mother helped me make cakes and cookies, providing me with my own miniature baking pans. Now we make biscotti. One unforgettable Christmas, my stepmother went on a pickling frenzy. I got to help make what seemed to be vats of pickled eggs and pickled okra. I think this had something do to with her being relatively new to the South, and these items were still novelties to her. All I know is that I haven’t been able to eat either item since. In more recent years I gave my grandmother homemade frozen meals. This made cooking dinner easier for her, because all she had to do what punch the buttons on the microwave. I enjoy receiving edible gifts just as much as making them. Every year, I look forward to treats from my cousins, particularly granola and home-baked bread. I gave up on bread baking long ago because I only succeeded in making large loaf-shaped bricks. Their granola, however, is relatively simple to make. Here are recipes for a few of my holiday gift staples. You will be happy to know that I am not sharing the recipe for pickled eggs.
AMY’S BASIC GRANOLA
ORANGE AND CINNAMON BISCOTTI
3-1/2 cups old fashioned oatmeal 2 tablespoons butter 2 tablespoons canola oil 1/3 cup real maple syrup 1/3 cup chopped nuts (almonds, pecans, and/or walnuts) 1/3 cup unsweetened coconut 1/3 cup sunflower seeds 1/4 cup sesame seeds (optional) 1/4 cup unprocessed wheat bran 1/4 cup wheat germ 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon vanilla 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon (optional, but I think it tastes better with it.) 1 cup dried fruit such as raisins, cranberries, blueberries, and/or cherries
1 cup sugar 1/2 cups unsalted butter (room temperature) 2 large eggs 2 tablespoons grated orange peel 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 cups all-purpose flour 1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon cinnamon
In a large bowl mix together all the dry ingredients except the fruit. Melt the butter in the maple syrup and oil; add to the dry ingredients. Mix well and bake on large jellyroll pan at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes. Take out and stir; add the fruit and bake another 15 minutes or until golden brown. You can also add the fruit after all is cooked is you prefer. The total cooking time is 30-40 minutes. Cool on wire rack. Makes about 6 cups.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter two baking sheets. Beat sugar and butter in large bowl until blended. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each. Mix in orange peel and vanilla. In another bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and cinnamon. Add to butter mixture and mix until just blended. Divide dough in half. Place each half on a separate baking sheet. Shape each piece of dough into a “log” that’s approximately 3-inches wide and about 3/4-inch high. Bake about 35 minutes or until the “log” is firm to touch. Cool for 10 minutes. Using a serrated knife, cut each log on the diagonal into 1/2-inch slices. Place slices onto baking sheets and cook about 12 minutes or until tops are golden. Turn the slices over and bake until bottoms golden. Cool and store in an airtight container. Makes about two dozen.

n times past, tradition dictated that a woman of a certain age cover her head when entering a church on Sunday mornings. It all started with the biblical apostle Paul. In a letter he wrote to the Corinthians, he said women should cover their heads during worship service. It’s a commandment many women, especially black women, have taken to heart.
“My hats crawl off ’bout every Sunday. It’s no way to hook ’em on. One of the members will just pick it up and hold it until I sit down.”

During slavery times, one of the ways the women would spruce themselves up for worship services would be to wrap their heads in scarves or add flowers to well-worn, tattered hats. Hats may have changed, but the tradition hasn’t. From relatively modest crowns to ones adorned with rhinestones, fur and feathers, hats spruce up outfits, add allure and tell stories.

The Convenient Kitchen by Katie Stewart
I
n our endeavors to live simply and cut back our food spending, my husband, Mason, and I have found how important it is to cook at home. A delicious homemade meal tastes so much better and is even cheaper than eating a meal at a fast food restaurant. Part of the motivation for cooking at home, however, is having good tools that make your time in the kitchen rewarding. In addition to the challenges of eating on a budget, we also have the challenge of a small living space. Not only does everything in our kitchen have to be useful, but it has to fit adequately in our space, leaving us room to cook. We achieve this by owning kitchen appliances and utensils that perform multiple tasks and take up little space. Mixing Bowls/Serving Bowls. We have a set of 10 glass bowls that nest inside each other. Because they are attractive as well as practical, they can go straight from the kitchen to the table. This saves space, time and dishwashing.
Chambord French press, $40, Everyday Gourmet
Coffee Grinder/French Press. Not only is French press coffee more delicious than drip coffee, it takes up a very small space on our counter. We can store a coffee grinder and French press in less space than a coffeemaker, and our morning coffee tastes better. Dutch Oven. When you’re making a stew, soup or meat dish, a Dutch oven is invaluable, as it can be used on the stovetop and in the oven, as well as on the table as a serving dish. They’re heavy, sturdy and last forever. Stand Mixer. Stand mixers are expensive, so they aren’t great for last-minute purchases. However, if you do any amount of baking, they are a fantastic investment. As one who has made cakes entirely by hand without a mixer, I am thankful for mine, which sits prominently on my counter and gets used at least twice a week. Its functions are many, but the basic model mixes, whips and kneads. If you’re willing to purchase attach-
ments, you can make ice cream, pasta, ground meat and fresh squeezed juice. Bread Machine. This is one appliance that takes up a good bit of space on the counter, though it has only one function; however, I have found that it saves time as well as money. We now eat delicious, healthful bread that is made with real ingredients. All I have to do is put in the components and let the machine work its magic. There is one major appliance that we don’t have in our kitchen: a microwave. To be honest, we own one, but it remains stored most of the time. In my effort to make healthy, home-cooked, inexpensive food, I found that I was using the microwave less and less, and it was becoming a huge waste of space. Our journey in frugality has led us to eat better and use our time and space more wisely. And in that we are blessed.

The Art of Staying Warm J ust because it’s time to bundle up—because the weather is threatening to be frightful—doesn’t mean you have to look like a shtunk while you’re schlepping about downtown, in Fondren, the Renaissance or wherever you do your schlepping throughout your day. In fact, you can look fabulous. Get rid of that tattered black coat you’ve had for years, and replace it with something fun, flirty or unexpected. Those gloves with the pin-

sized holes at the fingertips you think no one sees … we see them. Your footwear, even the socks you wear with your boots, doesn’t have to be strictly practical. Utilitarian can be cute, too. Trust us. And yes, your mother was right: You lose most of your heat through your head, so cover it. But make sure it’s a piece that makes others’ heads turn.

Techno FLY Y
by Natalie A. Collier and ShaWanda Jacome Model: Shannon Sullivan
ou may be a fashionista who is as opposed to technological advances as those rebels (or trailblazers, they fancy themselves) who dare to wear white after Labor Day, but technology simply cannot be avoided. If you think about it, and not for long, studs remind you of the buttons on machines that do important things and the mesmerizing lights of a video
game look like the sparkle of a sequin. You get the point. And now designers are combining the two fields in less abstract ways. Google “little black M dress” when you have time. It’s a mobile phone dress; just insert SIM card. What will they think of next? Inquiring fashion-forward minds want to know.
“TECHNOLOGY

IS THE FASHION OF
THE ‘90S. IT AFFECTS EVERYONE, AND EVERYONE IS INTERESTED IN IT,
EITHER FROM FEAR OF BEING

LEFT BEHIND OR BECAUSE THEY HAVE A
REAL NEED TO USE TECHNOLOGY.” —JAY CHIAT, AMERICAN ADVERTISING DESIGNER
