JACKSON STATE INTERIM PRESIDENT

Dr. Rod Paige

JSU interim President Rod Paige, the son of a school principal and a librarian, rose from humble roots in a segregated small-town in Mississippi all the way to U.S. Secretary of Education. He assumed his new role on Nov. 7, 2016. From 2001 to 2005, Paige served in George W. Bush’s administration. As the nation’s top educator, he championed student achievement and employed “best of breed” solutions to raise national standards of educational excellence. A member of the presidential Cabinet, Paige spearheaded the implementation of the historic No Child Left Behind Act, with the goal of reinvigorating America’s education system. Paige forged his reputation for seeking out and putting in place innovative approaches to systemic academic improvement when he was dean of the College of Education at Texas Southern University (TSU). At TSU, he established the University’s Center for Excellence in Urban Education. He also has shown a knack for inclusive leadership, first as a school board trustee and then as superintendent of the Houston Independent School District, then the nation’s seventh-largest district. When he was appointed superintendent in 1994, he was the first African-American in the district’s history to serve in that position. In 1999, Paige was named one of the top two educators in the country by the Council of the Great City Schools. Two years later, Paige was honored as National Superintendent of the Year by the American Association of School Administrators. Following his time as Secretary of Education, Paige served as a Public Policy Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. In 2006, he authored The War Against Hope and, in 2010, published The BlackWhite Achievement Gap: Why Closing it is the Greatest Civil Rights Issue of Our Time. In his relentless quest to improve the quality of education for all students, Paige is an active member of numerous boards, including the Universal Technical Institute (UTI), Thomas B. Fordham Foundation, the American College of Education, Patten University, Strake Foundation, Blue Cure Foundation, Texas Charter Schools Association and the National Council of Economic Education’s Commission on the Skills of the American Workforce, among others. Paige is the eldest of five siblings. He and his wife, Stephanie Nellons-Paige, have a son and daughter.

Thee I Love...

Jackson State University has a distinguished history, rich in the tradition of educating young men and women for leadership, having undergone seven name changes as it grew and developed. Founded as Natchez Seminary in 1877 by the American Baptist Home mission Society, the school was established as Natchez, Mississippi “for the moral, religious and intellectual improvement of Christian leaders of the colored people of Mississippi and the neighboring states. In November 1882, the school was moved to Jackson; in March 1899, the curriculum was expanded and the name was changed to Jackson College. The state assumed support of the college in 1940, assigning to it the mission of training teachers. Subsequently, between 1953 and 1956, the curriculum was expanded to include a graduate program and bachelor’s programs in the arts and sciences; the name was then changed to Jackson State College in 1956. Further expansion of the curriculum and a notable building program preceded the elevation of Jackson State College to university status on March 15, 1974. In 1979, Jackson State was officially designated the Urban University of the State of Mississippi. Presently, Jackson State University, a public, coeducational institution, is supported by legislative appropriations supplemented by student fees and federal and private grants.

Vision Building on its historic mission of empowering diverse students to become leaders, Jackson State University will become recognized as a challenging, yet nurturing, state-of-the-art technologically-infused intellectual community. Students and faculty will engage in creative research, participate in interdisciplinary and multiinstitutional/ organizational collaborative learning teams and serve the global community.

Mission The University produces technologically-advanced, diverse, ethical, global leaders who think critically, address societal problems and compete effectively.

2017 OUTLOOK When it comes to baseball in the South, Jackson State’s long, rich tradition makes it one of the best programs in the area. Strong coaches and talented players have helped develop the Tiger nine into the premier program in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. As the Tigers fourth full-tome coach, Omar Johnson has already made his mark on JSU’s illustrious history. In just 10 seasons under Johnson’s direction, JSU has won 60 percent of it contest, recorded over 300 wins, and collected five Eastern Division Championships and two SWAC Championships. With such a rich baseball history, much is expected of JSU. Winning championships is among the team’s main goals which keeps the Tigers focused on winning a third championship under Johnson and advancing to the 2017 NCAA regionals. Johnson’s team finished the 2016 season ranked first in the Southwestern Athletic Conference in batting average, slugging percentage, on base percentage, runs scored, hits, RBIs, doubles, triples, total bases, total plate appearances, at-bats, innings pitched, and batters struck out looking. They look to improve on last year’s accomplishments as the progress through the season. In 2016, the Tigers missed the opportunity to advance to the championship game as they fell 15-4 to Texas Southern in the semifinal round at Wesley Barrow Stadium in New Orleans, La. Although JSU did not claim the ultimate prize, the Tigers proved to be the team to beat ending the season 34-26 to record the 20th season with 30 or more wins since the teams 1958 inception. The Team Jackson State returns six starters for the 2017 campaign including five All-SWAC Conference Team members. To make up for the team’s loss of personnel, seven new face, three freshmen and four transfers) have been added to the roster. The Bullpen (Pitchers) During the 2016 season, JSU ranked second in the conference in earned runs and first in batters struck out looking. The Tigers return SWAC Preseason All-Conference First Team honoree Miguel Yrigoyen who led the conference in batters struck out and batters struck out looking, ranked third in wins, and second in game started. The Tigers will be looking to Yrigoyen to improve on his 4.61 ERA to makeup for the loss of Jevon Jacobs and Jamal Wilson who both exhausted their eligibility last season. Jesse Anderson, Jonathan Aponte, and Joshua Santiago did great jobs last season as relief pitchers but the JSU Coaching staff will rely on them to step up into starting pitcher roles to achieve a successful season. Other pitchers to look out for will be Richard ‘Mo’ Brown, junior right-handed pitcher, and Sebron Mackey, senior right-handed pitcher. Behind the Plate (Catchers) The Tiger baseball team has always been lucky behind the plate with great catchers. In the last five years, Jackson State has produced Jose Cruz, Jovany Felipe, and Carlos Diaz, two of which (Felipe and Cruz) went on to sign deal with pro teams. David Burke, junior catcher, and Jonah Hargroves, utility player, will be expected to step up and take over and compete for

that position. The Tigers also signed Stephan Vidal, a junior transfer who also has experience at the position. Infield & Outfield The Tigers are stable throughout the infield and outfield with experience in every position. Lamar Briggs, junior infielder, suffered an injury during the 2016 season and acted as a designated hitter for most of the season. Now back at 100%, he will be looking to reclaim his role in the infield. JSU also returns Cornelius Copeland and Jesus Santana. Copeland, at the shortstop position, ranked fourth in the nation with a .422 batting average. He played in 54 games with 54 starts to record 187 at-bats, 62 runs, 79 hits (18 doubles, 3 triples, and five homeruns) for 38 RBIs. The coaching staff will be looking to him to improve on the .895 fielding percentage he logged last season. Santana, junior infielder, led the team and the conference with 17 homeruns and 67 RBIs and will need to improve on his .888 fielding percentage. “The infield will have the same familiar faces,” said Johnson, “but the positions may change as we see how the season goes.” In the outfield, the Tigers return CJ Newsome and Bryce Brown. Newsome received All-American honors last season as a freshman and received several post season honors. Newsome maintained a .351 batting average in 56 games played on 55 starts. He recorded 211 at-bats, 52 runs, 74 hits (14 doubles, four triples, and one home run) for 35 RBIs. He also maintained a .954 fielding percentage. Brown maintained a .360 batting average with 56 games played and started. He recorded 186 at-bats, 47 runs, 67 hits (10 doubles, one triple, and seven homeruns) for 43 RBIs. On the field, Brown maintained a .967 fielding percentage. Offense As a team, the Tigers logged 103 stolen bases, 24 triples, 61 home runs, a .322 batting average and scored 507 runs, numbers that rival SWAC and national rankings. Johnson feels the team can improve upon those numbers in 2017. SWAC Championship Tournament.
