WELCOME! I am very pleased to introduce the truly exciting 2016-2017 Jacksonville Symphony season. It’s a season packed full of inspiring music that I know you will love. First, we are expanding the Masterworks season from 10 concerts to 12, enabling us to present more music, more guest artists and a more varied program than ever before. We begin the season with Stravinsky’s masterpiece, The Rite of Spring. This score changed the course of music, erupting in Paris in 1913, yet it still sounds as new as if it were composed yesterday. We close the season with Mahler’s life-affirming Symphony No. 2, The Resurrection. Throughout the season you can look forward to the familiar works you know and love, while discovering new pieces we’ve selected for your enjoyment. You will be thrilled by brilliant guest artists including Anthony McGill and Karina Canellakis. And, I know you won’t want to miss our Gala featuring the world renowned Lang Lang. We’ve also expanded the Pops season from eight to 12 concerts, and Symphony in 60 from three to four concerts. The Pops season has something for everyone from Disney’s Broadway Hits to Second City’s hilarious Guide to the Symphony to the 50th anniversary of the Beatles’ classic Sgt. Pepper’s. Plus three new Symphonic Nights at the Movies and a New Year’s Eve party with Steven Reineke and the songs of Sinatra. Finally, celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with the Symphony and the quintessential Irish band, The Chieftains. It’s sure to be Jacksonville’s best St. Patrick’s Day party. And of course, we are bringing back your holiday favorites, our Holiday Pops, The First Coast Nutcracker and Handel’s Messiah. It will be my first season living in Jacksonville and I cannot wait to share it with you. See you at Jacoby Hall.

Plan Your Visit “When should I arrive?”

We suggest you arrive 20 to 30 minutes before the concert is scheduled to begin. That will give you ample time to find your seat, relax, read ENCORE, our program magazine, and watch the musicians as they take the stage. Jacksonville Symphony concerts begin promptly at the announced starting time. Ticketholders who come late will not be seated in the hall until after the conclusion of the first work on the program. Concertgoers who must leave the hall before or during the playing of a piece will not be reseated until after that piece is concluded. In consideration of the performers and fellow concertgoers, we ask that you remain in your seat until the concert has ended.

“What should I wear?”

Your concert experience should be comfortable, so we encourage you to dress to your preference. You’ll see a variety of attire, including suits, khakis, jeans and skirts. Generally, business casual is a good way to go.

“When should I bring my children?” Of course, we encourage you to bring your children to experience the Symphony. They are never too young to begin to establish an appreciation for symphonic music. However, we ask that you also be considerate of others. Evening concerts are best suited for children seven and older. Family-friendly concerts are encouraged for all and include Symphonic Nights at the Movies and all of our Saturday and Sunday matinees. Every child over the age of one year requires a ticket.

“When do I applaud?”

There are two reasons to applaud at a Jacksonville Symphony concert: as a greeting, and to show appreciation. Just before the concert begins, the Orchestra members will all be seated on the stage, except for the Concertmaster - the violinist who sits in the first chair of the first row of the Orchestra. You can applaud to greet the Concertmaster when he or she comes onstage. You can applaud again a few moments later when the Conductor comes onstage. Any soloists who will be performing will usually come onstage with the Conductor; you can applaud to greet the soloist or soloists as well. It is customary to not applaud again until the end of each piece of music, to show your appreciation to the performers. Some longer pieces may have several sections, or movements, separated by a brief, silent pause. The audience does not applaud between movements of a piece. The program will list the movements in each piece, so you will know how many there are; applause is usually reserved for the end of the last movement.

“How long are concerts?”

Most concerts are 90-120 minutes long with a 15-20 minute intermission. Coffee concerts run a little over an hour without an intermission. Symphony in 60 and Family concerts run close to an hour without intermission.
