I was looking for adventure, and this is where I found it. La Paz is exciting, exotic, colourful â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and very loud. With its congested streets and millions of inhabitants, the highest capital city in the world offers a multitude of impressions.

THE BEATING HEART OF BOLIVIA

Due to its extreme altitude and location, La Paz is a pretty tough place to hang out. I spend three days here and it has everything a spectacular backpacking destination ought to have. The endless swathes of houses built on steep hillsides, the four, five and six thousand metre mountains that surround the city and the vast high plains of the Altiplano make La Paz one of the most remarkable cities in the world. The less travelled roads are a real adventure in themselves – a far cry from the fashionable beaches of Brazil. On the bus ride through the chaotic streets of the city I get to know a few other backpackers and Adolfo, the bus driver. He shows us a few of the city’s hot spots. We check out the magic potions at the socalled Witches’ Market, and do a bit of people watching.

Learning about the culture and customs of the Bolivian people is an exciting experience.

The starting point of the trek lies at an altitude of more than 5000 metres. We are all short of breath and our big packs feel heavier than usual, but we are all really stoked for the trail, the challenge and the chance to find out what our physical limits are. The highest section of the Choro Trail is a real challenge for us all. Every upward step leaves us gasping for breath, and the trail is all up and down at this point. The uphill sections are a real fight under these conditions and we have to keep stopping to take a breather. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a pretty extreme experience for all of us. The downhill sections of the trail are easier going; we can see the height dropping quickly on our altimeter watches.

SOCIAL STANDARDS · Since 2010 we have been a member of the FAIR WEAR FOUNDATION, and are committed to safe, fair and socially responsible working conditions. · JACK WOLFSKIN has been awarded Leader Status by the FAIR WEAR FOUNDATION for the second time. · Our Social Reports provides regular information on how these standards are being implemented by our production partners.

SUPPLY CHAIN · We were the first and to date the only outdoor company to promote increased transparency of our supply chain by publishing audit results, waste water tests, certification details and more. · Regular training and checks ensure full compliance with our social and environmental standards through all stages of the supply chain.

ENVIRONMENTAL STANDARDS · The bluesign® System applies to the entire textile supply chain, from the yarn to the finished product, and guarantees the implementation of the highest environmental standards through independent monitoring and controls. · Since 2013 our cotton products have been made using only certified organically grown cotton. · Currently 89% of our clothing collection is PFC-free (without fluorinated chemicals). Our aim is to eliminate PFCs completely by 2020.
