ABOUT MELAKA HISTORY 历史

ECONOMY 经济

Melaka was founded by Parameswara, a prince of Sumatra, Indonesia at 1396. He was fleeing his country when he chanced upon a shady tree, named Melaka, along the coast of Peninsular Malaysia. As he rested, he saw a mousedeer fighting with a dog, and the dog lost. He liked the place and decided to make it his new home. He named the place, Melaka, after the tree. In the 15th century, Melaka quickly developed into a prosperous trading port and soon became an Empire. Due to its rapid growth, the Straits became a waterway filled with activities. Trading ships from all over the world passed by this busy port-of-call. Gold, silk, spices, tobacco and tea leaves were among the goods traded in this port. Heroes and legends thrived at the height of the Melaka Empire. Among them were the wise Sultan Mansur Shah, the intelligent and knowledgeable Minister, Tun Perak, and the heroic warrior, Hang Tuah. Melaka also came under the rule of the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British before it became part of the Federation of Malaya in 1956. The richness of its heritage and culture is captured in every street and building in the state. On 7th, July 2008, Melaka historical core district has been included in UNESCO World Heritage City list.

The State of Melaka is under rapid economic growth and development. Tourism is the mainstay of the state’s economy. A’ FAMOSA COMPLEX

A’ Famosa 古城堡 Among the many interesting sites and places in Melaka, A’Famosa stands out as the major historical landmark. Built by the Portuguese in the 16th century as protection against the Dutch naval force, it is a site that should not be missed by visitors to Melaka. The gate that visitors see today has survived countless years of damage brought to it by wars and natural erosion, a change process that is witnessed by a solitude cannon that still stands in front of the gate today.

Melaka is famous for having many churches that were built decades ago. The St. Paul’s Church was built in 1521 by a Portuguese general called Duartecoelho, this is one of the oldest Catholic churches in Malaysia. It was named St. Paul’s Church after the Dutch conquered Melaka. When construction of the St Paul’s Church was completed, this building was then changed into a mausoleum. 298 Melaka

The Sultanate Palace built according to the 15th century Malay architecture (made popular during the reign of Sultan Mansur Shah) now houses the Melaka Cultural Museum. The original palace had earlier been damaged and was not occupied nor used. The wooden replica of the Palace that visitors see today serves as a reminder of the golden years of the Melaka Sultanate, a time when Melaka established good relationship with China and a time when sultans ruled Melaka. It was during that time when sultans and their armies used the foot of St Paul’s Hill as their base and command post. This strategic location provided a good view of the Straits of Melaka (and of the ships passing by). This glamorous palace, situated on the mid slope of the hill, once stood majestically as it welcomed foreign dignitaries. However, in 1511 when the Portuguese attacked Melaka, the palace was destroyed. Taking its place as the main and important building in Melaka then was the fort A’Famosa. The gate of the fort, which stood beside the palace, marked the power of the foreign intruder - the Portuguese. The gate then went on to witness the 500-year history of Melaka’s colonial era.

The museum is constructed after the Portuguese ship, “Flora De La Mar”. According to historical records, the Portuguese ship sank off the coast Melaka on its way to Portugal on 26th January 1512. Located at Jalan Quayside, the exhibits in the Maritime Museum tell of Melaka’s maritime history that spans over seven generations. The exhibits are grouped into the following categories: the era of the famed Melaka Sultanate in the 14th and 15th centuries, the Portuguese era (1511- 1641), the Dutch era (1641 - 1795), the British colonial era (1795 - 1957) and from Independence (1957) until today.

THE STADHUYS COMPLEX

The Stadthuys 红屋 Built in 1650, The Stadthuys is another Dutch construction that one can find in the city of Melaka. It was originally built as the official residence for the Dutch Governors and their officers. With wooden doors that are beautiful and sturdy, stonewalls that are elegant yet strong, steel door bolts that are delicate yet robust, one will be amazed by the carpentry and bricklaying skills of the Dutch. However, today only one room remains. The ceiling of this room is decorated with 17th century woodcarvings that depict flowers. Today, the Stadthuys is the Historical Museum of Melaka. On display are Portuguese and Dutch memorabilia, in addition to the many exquisite Malay and Chinese traditional costumes. A visit to this museum is like walking down the historical path of Melaka.

The Cheng HoCultural Museum occupies the original Guan Chang or government depot, which was built by Admiral Cheng Ho (Zheng He), the Ming Grand Eunuch. His mighty fleet of several hundred ships sailed seven times to the Western Seas from China to Africa over the period, 1405-1433. His fleet visited over 33 countries in the Pacific and Indian Ocean. His voyages took place over half a century before Colombus discovered America. The site of Guan Chang originally covers approximately 10 acres of lowlying land along the northern banks of the Melaka river opposite the Malay Sultanate palace. The present museum occupies 8 units of old shophoues, some were built before 1786. The museum’s total floor area is about 55,000 square feet, the largest museum in Melaka. The concept of the Museum adopts a non-conventional and immersive approach. It’s design employs multimedia, interactive and hands-on techniques and presents a historical perspective. The museum serves to provide an educational experience for both adults and children.

OLD TOWN MELAKA

A long time ago, the Dutch ruled the south-western Malaysian port of Melaka. The people who lived on one of the streets there prospered. The street then became known as the “Street of the Affluent”. It was Jonker Street. Today this historic street is officially known as Jalan Hang Jebat and it has evolved into one that is interesting and intriguing. Jonker Street has become a haven for antique collectors and bargain hunters. Often, traders and tourists would fill the street slowing down traffic. The rich cultural heritage of the Baba and Nyonya can still be clearly visible on the walls and pillars of the buildings. These pre-colonial and colonial buildings boast of walls and pillars that are engraved with intricate carvings. Being one of the most popular and busiest parts of Melaka, a myriad of cafes and souvenir shops have mushroomed. The beauty of Melaka, in particular, and Malaysia in general, is that such encroachment of the new usually leads to a colourful and exciting blend of the old and contemporary. The Melaka State Government, capitalising on the popularity of the street, had innovatively promoted the concept of “Jonker Walk”. In the evenings of Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays (time: 6.00pm to 12.00 midnight), traders would line their stalls along the street selling their wares. One could easily find what one needs from the variety of souvenirs, traditional handicrafts or arts and cultural items, with local and ethnic types of food that are on sale. The street, abuzz with tourists and locals, blends naturally into the rich heritage of the “ancient” surroundings making a visit to Jonker Street an unforgettable experience.

MELAKA RIVER

The Melaka River or Sungai Melaka can be seen as the beginning of Melaka history, when it was called ‘Venice of the East’ by the Europeans who sail it. During the 15th century, the Prince Parameswara of Sumatra created his Sultanate at the entrance to this river. On its route to the sea, the Melaka River travels pass the town of Melaka; many old villages, along with present day buildings, line its banks. It is of no surprise that for these reasons the river passage was an important route for major trade and commerce. Experience the Melaka River Cruise from Taman Rempah at Jalan Tun Sri Lanang to the Melaka River estuary. The 45-minute cruise at Melaka River is accompanied by an entertaining and informative commentary. There are 18 boats available which can accommodate 20 to 40 people. The boats will leave every 30 minutes. Water taxi service is introduced at Melaka River this lately.
