Creation Story of Museum Design Competition Location: Medinah, Saudi Arabia Year: 2018 April Built up Area: 12,000 sq.m. Architect: X-architects Programme: Museum, Commercial and Public Garden

Urban Condition / Site The project is an integrated cultural complex development located in Al Madinah Al Munawwara city, on a land to the south of the Prophet’s Mosque, called “the land of Alsafia”, a plot which was once a rich garden full of beautiful palm trees. The site has a total area of 4419 m2. It is considered a dense urban fabric with high activity and traffic including local and global visitors all around the year. The location of the plot on a direct axis to Al Salam gate of the Prophet’s mosque magnifies its significance. Within its boundaries lies an existing water well that irrigates the cultivated areas in central parts of the city and highlights the cultural importance of landscape and agriculture in the city’s identity.

- URBAN OASIS -

Being enclosed by four streets, the significant site intensifies the use of the project and amplifies its perception as a landmark icon amidst taller buildings and calls for potential activation of street level and creating opportunities of connections with its surroundings.

Together under same roof The purpose of our design is to investigate and illustrate a possible relationship between the former Futakotamagawa ,Tokyo school building and its new contemporary purpose and positioning in the contemporary townscape. We believe, that the history of structure and site can be combined with a communal usage. The main design element is the roof, with its ability to connect and create space and meaning. Under the roof, there are different possibilities of activities, which could happen under different scale activities of continuous roof. The configuration of the roof resembled a urban courtyard, which enclosed the existing playground, open space of Futakotamagawa school. Activities/Roof in Descenting order Different activities might require different size of headroom. In the proposal, we were trying to arrange the activities according to size and intimacy among people, which Design Concept by - Under One Roof are connected a new element, One Roof, which symbolizing shelter and identity for society. Proposition of New Typology of Skyscraper in Shibuya

Symbolic meaning of skyscraper in history

Design Methodology

Skyscraper is a capitalism product, which owned by private developer. Took reference to Equitable Building, early skyscrapers dominated whole plot of land, maximize the development and decorated with luxurious moldings to show their social class. The private owner sets different prices according to the height of floors and views, which prioritize the value of occupants. Reference to Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, height competitions happened around 1930s, clients and architects had been chasing the highest height limit of buildings. Those implied the symbolic meaning of Social class, Economic Power, Authority and Human Ambitious. Took Flatiron building built in 1902 as an example, the lifespan of skyscrapers could be estimated more than 100 years. The appearance of skyscrapers contributed as part of city image but could not escape being obsolete. They will be continuously documented as a part of the urban history as monuments.

This thesis took Shibuya station building as hypothetical site to design a counter proposal on current development. It pro- posed addition of compact apartment units, small start-up, social media offices, market and food bazaar, outdoor entertainment and events for public with connection to continuous public terrace which adjoined with flyover to different shopping arcades and railways platforms in different levels. Not only occupants, passengers, all people could freely use the continuous public terrace in 24 hours.

Research on Publicness Typologies on Skyscraper International style dominated architecture style in 1950s, skyscraper was designed with offset from site boundary, public plaza and public podium firstly introduced. Non-occupants could freely use the public space. The form of public space changed by means of public program on bottom part of skyscrapers during post-modernism period. It was hybrid of public programs, such as infrastructure, shopping arcade, theatre and sports facilities to cater the complex demand of society. From the investigation of 36 publicness related examples. Five major typologies of skyscraper are proposed: Observation Deck, Public Plaza, Public Podium, Public Terrace and Public Programs. Research principle of selective typologies is proposed to create the new type of skyscraper.

By rearrangement of programs, building mass splits into two adjacent slender, different height buildings. By further morphing building forms, it transformed to double helix accessible facade surface. The double helix surface was composed by series of 3 dimensional continuous architectural fins. At low level, they are the continuous steps and it transformed to vertical fins in mid-level and changed to balconies on upper level. The low level of continuous helix public terrace from Tower A connecting with Hachiko Open Plaza provides resting space for temporarily stay. It gradually rises up over JR line linking pedestrian flow to market place and food bazaar on upper level. The low level of another helix from Tower B adjoins with pedestrian bridge on south district linking with new green promenade which will be completed in 2016 and gradually rises up to connect with Ginza line platform. Public events could happen on the continuous double helix building surface. The programs and atmosphere could be visible and attractive to participants not only on ground level. Thesis statement This thesis serves as a discourse to encounter historical symbolic meanings of skyscraper from capitalism, authority converted to publicness by proposing double helix occupiable building surface as a new publicness typology of skyscraper. “MASS TOWER acts as social condenser and generates changeable and mobile human flux, which represents current and future social status.

Skyscraper facade as 3-dimensional surface connection Shibuya Station is one of the most complicated and busiest district in the world. The site has rich historical context, was penetrated and superimposited by massive transportation on different levels. Instead of conventional linear connection, 3 dimensional surface connection to infrastructure attached with public open space where people can enjoy and stay temporarily are suggusted in this thesis. Restricted the slope of 3 dimensional surface between 4-6 degree, people could barely feel the discomfort of level changes. Based on the research principle of Publicness Typologies on Skyscraper, 3 different characters of Publicness typologies are proposed for new building on Shibuya Station Building, including T2 - Observation Deck, T3 - Open Plaza and T5 - Terrace.
