HYBRIDSCAPE

Verticle hybrid soho apartments 37-45 flinders lane, Melbourne Year 3 - Semester 1

Initially, I started by designing a new hybrid building concept and developing a basic form and shape. Through the use of stacked apartments to utalise the north sun, this soho apartment concept was created. The apartments combine both living and working space, in a design that aims to efficiently maximise space and natural light.

The timber exterior frame was an experimental approach to the design, I wanted to use a natural material that differed from the standard use of concrete in apartment buildings. The amphitheatre is a place for public gathering in the building next to the indoor/ outdoor bar.

This model is made from balsa wood, the lower two floors acts as a solid base for the above structure. The inside is lined with trace paper to achieve the interior lighting glow affect.

DOCUMENTATION STUDIO PROJECT T House / Dom Architect Studio Location: Vietnam https://www.archdaily.com/931793/thouse-dom-architect-studio

This project was a very steep learning curve for me during my studies in architecture. The project involved creating a range of construction working drawings based off the schematic design of the T House by Dom Architect Studio. The project uses a timber post and beam construction system. Using AutoCad, the final drawings produced communicate an understanding of construction methods, materials, details and finishes. This project pushed me to understand construction and drawing documentation in a way that has prepared me well for practice. I found talking to local builders and tradesman extrememly helpful in this project, learning how to develop a practical mindset and constantly using problem solving skills.

SUPERSTUDIO PROJECT

This project involved handrawing and designing an imaginary site and landscape, and then designing a cultural and educational facility within the imagined site. The site I designed was a sloped coastal hill that resembled many areas along the great ocean road. The educational facility was an ocean wellness centre that used the natural Australian environment to motivate its design, hidden within the slopes of the land and cantilevered pavillions that projected views towards the ocean. Using natural timber cladding to suit its surrounding environment and a sloped green roof to provide outdoor gathering space, and relate the building to the natural slopes of the hill. Sun shading louvers were also used to gain natural light and ventilation. A boardwalk runs from the top of the slope, around the central tree of the building to connect the buiding further to the landscape and provide a journey around the building.

The site is located in South-West Coastal Victoria. Nestled into a large hill that overlooks the prestine beauty of the ocean.

The curved glass basement facade wraps around a central tree that directly links the nature of the site to the wellness retreat. The pavillions provide spaces such as accomodation, yoga studios and communal social spaces.
