Surrounding Site Context Studies
Research is a vital part of designing. Creating a better understanding of a project through client studies, case studies, and site studies lead to a well rounded design.
Conceptual House ENVD Spring 2013
This conceptual house is designed as a weekend retreat for a single client. The site for this project was special being directly tied to a body of water. Having a minimal program allowed for the use of a simple grid system. Implementation of mass/void and working the grid to include inversions and programmatic overlapping boasts many dynamic and useful spaces. The medium for this project was sketching, study modeling, hand drafting, and hand modeling.
Flint Hills Art Gallery ADS II Sprint 2014
The Flint Hills Art Gallery is based in Junction City, Ks. Surrounding historical context, daylighting, and public vs. private programmatic needs are the driving design forces for the gallery. Spaces wrap around a simple atrium space that becomes the division between the served and servant spaces as well as the main circulation space for people, and shared light. Opening the facade up on the north and shading the western facade allows for broken diffused light to envelope the interior of the gallery. Angling of the street edge creates positive outdoor space for the cafe. A high level of transparency is also used to pull focus to the interior from the surrounding context.
Dallas Public Library ADS II Spring 2014
The Dallas Public Library is a set piece design. Eight massive piers spatially organize the library, become the primary structure, and encase service areas. Both people and light circulate through the central atrium. Being a library, daylighting became an important design factor. Reading and technology requires different levels of illuminance. Elongating the building along and east west axis allows for maximum light penetration. To control this light a system of louvers was developed.
This system works with the sun angles during the over-heated and under-heated seasons of Texas. South facing glass is exposed to direct sunlight for passive heating during the winter, but only allows broken light into the libraries spaces during summer months. Louvers over the atrium skylight funnel diffused light throughout the building. Louvers on the north facing facade shade positive outdoor areas, and redirect light back into the building.
Salina Center For Studio Craft ADS III Fall 2014
The Center for Studio Craft is a trades college located in the small city of Salina, Ks. The college is home to three crafts; glass working, ceramics, and metal smithing. The site has a direct connection with the Smokey Hill River as well as the historical downtown main-street. The northern facade runs parallel with the banks of the Smokey Hill. Implementation of a centralized courtyard creates an inward focus and positive outdoor space. The studio spaces for the school are pushed to the 2nd floor of the building for privacy, while still allowing for views into the spaces. The galleries placement along the street edge is used as a didactic tool to pull interest into the school. Passive daylighting is used throughout the building in the form of north facing skylights.
Bowery Bay Ferry Terminal NYC ADS IV Spring 2015
Bowery Bay Ferry Terminal is part of a proposed network working along the East River servicing New York City boroughs. Being part of the commute loop for nearby La Guardia Airport and the surrounding residential and industrial neighborhoods was a driving force. The implementation of a land bridge allows for foot traffic from East Elmhurst to have a direct connection to the terminal. Precise placement along the MTA bus route and main roads completes the automobile commute loop.

Section B 1/16=1’
Section A 1/8”=1’
As seen in the parti, three programmatic bars were created; recreational, terminal functions, and loading and unloading. Elongating these bars and sliding past each other on a pier allows for the terminal to reach far enough into the bay to dock ferries. The void space between the bars provides positive outdoor space for all aspects of the program. Service cores implemented in a gridded regime further dividing the spaces. These cores are also used as thermal mass and passive lighting in the form of light wells. The axis of the building runs parallel to the nearby airport runway to encompass view-ports to planes taking off and landing, as well views to the green park lands to the northeast.
