WELCOME TO CHIHULY WORKSHOP Chihuly Workshop celebrates artist Dale Chihuly’s innovation, imagination, and bold creative spirit. Originally established in 1992 as Portland Press, a small company dedicated to publishing books about Chihuly’s art, it eventually began to produce and distribute Chihuly’s Studio Editions and prints. Over the years, we have extended the scope of our work by collaborating with Chihuly on a range of projects from books, films, and stationery to limited edition blankets produced by Pendleton Woolen Mills. Today, Chihuly Workshop is a place for the lively exchange of ideas. Our mission is to provide an environment that fosters dialogue, exploration, and experimentation for creative projects. Welcome to Chihuly Workshop.

Chihuly Drawing Chihuly Drawing chronicles five decades of Dale Chihuly’s work on paper. This dynamic collection is a fascinating study of variety. Many of the drawings are drenched in thick, bold layers. Others are more elusive—just a hint of form sketched with a fistful of pencils or a confidently manipulated charcoal. Over the years, his style has evolved, becoming more abstract, more elaborate, and, in some cases, much larger. But there are no rules; a technique that Chihuly favored a decade before may resurface again. The excitement of Chihuly’s work on paper is in its unpredictability, and that in two dimensions Chihuly is free to let his grandest schemes come to fruition. Above all, Chihuly’s work on paper revels in the monumental creativity that is essentially Chihuly.

Chihuly Silvered “Extraordinary, magical glass is his stock-in-trade, and the Silvered series is among the most technically ambitious and aesthetically adventurous art of his career—so far.”  —Jennifer Opie, from the introduction Although Dale Chihuly first experimented with the effects of silvered glass in 1996, it wasn’t until 2009 that he began to explore the full range of possibilities that silvering glass could have for his work, in particular in his Cylinder and Venetian series. The Silvered series that emerged from this experimentation is remarkably striking and singular for its stunning use of color and light. By using silvered glass, Chihuly is able to extend the reflective quality of the glass to manipulate the colors in the works and, in some cases, to magnify the dimensionality and articulation of form. With an introduction by Jennifer Opie that places Chihuly’s silvered glass in its broader historical context, Chihuly Silvered is the first comprehensive survey of Dale Chihuly’s work using silvered glass, showcasing the unique beauty of his newest series.

Chihuly Outside DVD Covering nearly half a century of Dale Chihuly’s work, Chihuly Outside documents his career as an installation artist, in particular his work done out in the landscape. The film begins with Chihuly’s early experiments with floating glass on water and using ice and neon in large-scale installations, as well as projects done at Artpark in upstate New York. It culminates with Chihuly’s decade-long cycle of exhibitions at twelve preeminent gardens. This in-depth documentary encompasses one of the most vital and long-lasting aspects of Chihuly’s career, with interviews by Kiki Smith, Barbara Rose, and Chihuly, among others, which places this work within the broader context of contemporary art. What emerges is a portrait of an artist who is continually searching for new possibilities and innovative ways in which his art can respond to natural spaces and glass can be used to move, provoke, and inspire.

Pendleton Blankets Ten years ago, Chihuly Workshop collaborated with Pendleton Woolen Mills to produce Blanket No. 1, the first in a series of limited edition blankets designed by Dale Chihuly. That early collaboration brought together the design elements in Chihuly’s work and the craftsmanship of Pendleton’s mills to create a blanket that was truly unique. Ten years later, Chihuly Workshop and Chihuly have revisited the blanket series and have again worked with Pendleton to create three new blankets in the series, intuitively titled Blanket No. 2, Blanket No. 3, and Blanket No. 4. Unlike the first blanket in the series, the newest blankets allowed Chihuly to create patterns that would have been difficult to realize ten years ago, before recent innovations at Pendleton. With this new freedom, Chihuly pushed the limits of the looms, creating patterns that are expressive and gestural in a way that is distinctive. Each blanket has been produced in a numbered edition of 250.

“I started using Golden acrylics about ten years ago when I discovered they made liquid acrylics. They were the first ones to do that. Then I started painting with the container itself, just squirting the paint out. You can more directly sense my energy in my drawings than in any other way perhaps.”  —Dale Chihuly When Chihuly started drawing with acrylics, he also began to create colors that were just as expressive on the canvas as the gestures that put them there. Chihuly Workshop has teamed up with Golden Artist Colors to bring out three of the colors that Golden produces for him. This set represents just a handful of the exciting and vibrant colors that Chihuly has designed with Golden for his works on paper. As a way of helping those with a lifelong passion for the arts develop and grow their voice, Chihuly Workshop will donate a portion of the proceeds from this product to Arts Corps. Arts Corps is the largest nonprofit arts educator in the Seattle area, working to foster creative habits of mind in young people through a passionate corps of teaching artists. Chihuly Pure Imagination Kids’ Floor Puzzle Dale Chihuly often starts the work for his astonishing glass art on a simple piece of paper: a napkin at a restaurant, a page from a sketchbook, a fax sheet. From there, teams of collaborators, fabricators, and artisans help bring Chihuly’s artistic vision to fruition. This large-format, double-sided floor puzzle follows this process for the installation that he designed for the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas, with an early sketch on one side of the puzzle and a prismatic detail from the completed artwork on the other. Challenging, colorful, and fun, the Chihuly Floor Puzzle will inspire the imagination and creativity of aspiring artists and others.

In 1965, Dale Chihuly melted a few pounds of stained glass in the kiln of his basement studio and, using a steel pipe, blew his first bubble of glass. From there, he worked with some of the largest and oldest hotshops around the world before he finally established his own studio here in Seattle. Chihuly’s hotshop is a place of raw energy. It’s loud and industrial, and the energy that moves between the glassblowers and Chihuly is frenetic. The hotshop is where Chihuly’s ideas and the gaffer’s innovations are gathered together in a 2,200° furnace to produce works in glass as active as the process itself. The Hotshop line pays homage to the heat, work, and raw energy of the hotshop. It’s a line that speaks to the working life of the rough and hardy crew that is the backbone of Team Chihuly.

Our heathered hoodies are made from a two-colored fleece that allows some of the color on the inside of the hoodie to bleed out. This new fabric technique makes these hoodies unique for the subtle interplay between inside and out. Chihuly is screenprinted on the sleeve in black. And on the back right shoulder is embroidered COLOR INSIDE OUT. With a metal zipper and a fleece-lined hood, this slim-fit, custom-designed hoodie is middleweight to keep you warm but not too warm.

Chihuly Garden Installations “I want my work to look like it just happened, as if it were made by nature."  —Dale Chihuly Chihuly Garden Installations explores the results of Chihuly’s nearly decade-long investigation into designing site-specific installations for some of the world’s preeminent gardens and conservatories. This handsomely illustrated book follows this investigation from its beginning at Garfield Park Conservatory in Chicago through botanic, tropical, sculpture, and desert gardens, ending with his installation at Cheekwood in Nashville, exhibitions that drew more than 5 million visitors. Tracing the correspondence between his art and botanical life, Chihuly Garden Installations shows how the exchange between art and nature can shift from the harmonious and tranquil to stunning juxtapositions of scale and color.

Chihuly Black

Chihuly Black Limited Edition

This sumptuous leather-bound pictorial features Dale Chihuly’s series made primarily in black glass. This creates a dramatic contrast that forces the eye to consider, first, the shape of the form and, second, the surface decoration. Essayist Barbara Rose describes the historical relevance of black works in glass and Chihuly’s influence in the medium.

Chihuly first began his black works in spring 2006. He started with the Cylinders and eventually incorporated black into his best-known series, including drawings. A limited edition book with a trifold set of three intaglio print images was released simultaneously, handsomely packaged in a leather-bound clamshell.

Team Chihuly From the start of the American studio glass movement in the early 1960s, Dale Chihuly was instrumental in bringing glassmaking out of the factory and into the experimental environment of the artist’s studio. As the function and development of Chihuly’s work evolved into large-scale objects and installations, it became apparent that the role of the single gaffer would have to be transformed into a carefully choreographed team effort. This led Chihuly to put together teams of twelve or more people working in tandem to execute his ever-expanding series of ideas. Team Chihuly portrays the developing relationships between Chihuly and other renowned artists, including Dante Marioni, Benjamin Moore, William Morris, and Richard Royal, as well as Italian glass masters Pino Signoretto and Lino Tagliapietra.

Chihuly at the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew

Chihuly Form from Fire “ Chihuly’s originality lies in his refusal to believe that there are fixed rules that must be adhered to. Within the confines of his craft, he sees no boundaries.” —Henry Geldzahler

In his first botanical garden exhibition outside the United States, Dale Chihuly indulges his fascination with glasshouses by installing an elaborate collection of glass at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Inside grand Victorian conservatories and among outdoor plantings, twenty-five installations come together to completely transform the 132-hectare (some 325 acres) World Heritage Site.

Chihuly Seaforms

Chihuly’s Pendletons

“ The Seaforms seemed to come about by accident, as much of my work does—by chance. We were experimenting with some ribbed molds. . . . By blowing the pieces into ribbed molds, it gave them more strength.”  —Dale Chihuly

Hardcover 7¼ x 9¼" 112 pages 44 color photographs Essays by Sylvia Earle and Joan Seeman Robinson ISBN: 978-0-9608382-5-7 1995 $25.00

Part of Chihuly’s talent is making a highly complex art form appear simple and natural. Chihuly sought to strengthen glass by forming it in a ribbed mold, reinforcing the glass much as corrugation adds strength to cardboard. The glass, now traced with radial lines, could withstand more vigorous manipulation, especially shaking and crimping, which introduced longitudinal ripples and pleats.

Chihuly’s Pendletons is a testimony to Dale Chihuly’s longtime love of the beauty and variety of trade blankets. This large, generous book showcases trade blankets from Chihuly’s own collection, accompanied by historical photographs of Native Americans wearing the blankets. Included in this volume are the artist’s distinguished Blanket Cylinders, created by an innovative “pickup” technique in which thin threads of glass are fused to make drawings on the surface of each piece. Chihuly’s Pendletons provides a rare opportunity to view the striking inspiration behind an artist’s very original creations. Chihuly Persians

Chihuly alla Macchia

Dale Chihuly spent more than one year exploring new forms before he arrived at the Persian series, which is loosely based on Islamic glass. Many consider the Persians, which are marked by color saturation, bands of color, and highly unusual forms, to be Chihuly’s most powerful series. Chihuly Persians takes readers from Chihuly’s first Persian experiments in small forms to the complex and sizable installations that transformed sections of major institutions such as the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Palais du Louvre, Paris.

Macchia means “spotted” in Italian, but ever since the Renaissance, the word has been associated with a sketchlike method of applying the initial color to a drawing or painting. Dale Chihuly took this idea to the hotshop and produced the Macchia series.

Hardcover 6¼ x 6¼" 152 pages 103 color photographs ISBN: 978-0-9608382-2-6 1993 $25.00

Chihuly alla Macchia presents the series, along with close-up detailed photographs and Chihuly’s drawings, to give readers an intimate view of each of the Macchia. The dramatic nature of this series is beautifully presented in Chihuly alla Macchia.

Chihuly Over Venice

Chihuly Projects

Like much of Dale Chihuly’s work, Chihuly Over Venice was not simply an installation—it was an enthralling experience. This colorful journal documents the culmination of Chihuly’s artistic odyssey from his Seattle hotshop to four of the greatest glassmaking centers in the world: Nuutajärvi, Finland; Waterford, Ireland; Monterrey, Mexico; and finally Venice, Italy. Chihuly and his American team worked in each country with local glassblowers to create a series of Chandeliers. The outcome was distinctively “Chihuly”: fourteen brilliant Chandeliers graced the campos and canals of Venice for a remarkable time in September 1996.

Chihuly Projects is a fascinating retrospective that spans more than thirty years of Dale Chihuly’s career in glassblowing and installations. This 348-page volume illustrates the evolution of Chihuly’s daring and inventive projects—from his first experiments at the Rhode Island School of Design to his most recent large-scale architectural installations.

Hardcover 84⁄5 x 12" 348 pages 174 color photographs Essays by Barbara Rose and Dale M. Lanzone ISBN: 978-0-8109-6708-3 2000 $75.00 Distributed by Abrams

Chihuly has approached artistic boundaries as challenges to be overcome, installing seemingly impossible sculptures in locations around the world. Chihuly Projects profiles thirty-three of these installations, inviting readers to stretch beyond their relationship with light, color, design, and architecture to gain from Chihuly’s dramatic alliances between glass and space and people.

Chihuly Jerusalem 2000

Icicles: The Icicle Creek Chandelier

In July 1999, Dale Chihuly’s most dramatic undertaking— a yearlong millennial exhibition—opened at the Tower of David Museum of the History of Jerusalem in the Old City of Jerusalem. Chihuly and an international installation team adorned the aged stone of the former citadel with seventeen luminous sculptures. Chihuly’s love of extremes can be seen in his Jerusalem Wall of Ice, made from sixty-four tons of Alaskan ice.

Icicles: The Icicle Creek Chandelier chronicles the remarkable story of how, from Thanksgiving to Christmas 1996, one of Dale Chihuly’s most startling and challenging outdoor installations took form.

With 169 full-color images, Chihuly Jerusalem 2000 documents the installation of Chihuly in the Light of Jerusalem 2000.

Chihuly’s team of glassblowers created the Icicle Creek Chandelier in Leavenworth, Washington, from 1,200 parts. With help from environmental consultants and Chihuly’s own installation specialists, the Chandelier was installed amid snow and the cold of winter. Hardcover 83⁄8 x 10¾" 64 pages 44 color photographs Essay by Harriet Bullitt ISBN: 978-1-57684-006-1 1998 $20.00

This volume shares the story through intimate narratives and transcribed voice-mail messages between Chihuly, his team, and patron Harriet Bullitt. Detailed photographs capture the installation process and the final sculpture in its mountain setting. On every page, readers will enjoy exploring the relationship that the installation has with architecture and the natural environment.

Venetians Master Venetian glassblower Lino Tagliapietra and a large U.S. team (up to fifteen glassblowers) took an exciting experimental approach in the hotshop and created some of the most exotic “vessels” ever blown. Venetians offers readers full-color photographs of these fantastically sculpted vessels and the drawings Dale Chihuly made to guide the team.
