Studio Steven Scott is a Copenhagen based art practice that primarily investigates the perception of light, space, color and time and their effects on human experience. With the use of advanced lightning technology, the studio aim to explore sophisticated and continually shifting color and spatial relationships, over long time periods. Translating these dynamic experiences to a static medium (print) was the central challenge when developing a visual system for Studio Steven Scott.

With loose reins, this project asked to create a visual system for any company or artist. Choosing the Copenhagen based light art practice, Studio Steven Scott, would not only serve as a project in which I could immerse myself into a fascinating field of art. It would prove challenging in how to translate light art within the limitations of print.
Project Focus: Light Art & Installations
Concept

Studio Steven Scott's light installations are designed to slowly transition over time. With subtle color transitions and by carefully adjusting the brightness and vibrance of light, the studio oughts to evoke dynamic experiences of the one single artwork. The visual system strive to translate parts of these experiences within the limitation of print. Alternating from tranquil, dramatic, subtle and bold graphic treatments allows the system to express the wide range of perceptions intended by the studio's art. The system was carried out through a promotional book aiming to communicate the essence of the studio's work along with an identity that makes a clear reference to the importance of transitions.

Selected Work Jacob Bang
The tradition of baking is deeply rooted into the Danish culture, where the emphasis on precise craftsmanship is crucial in order to achieve high quality bread and pastry. Andersen, a global Danish bakery, was however struggling to clearly communicate that spirit and origin of their product. When rebranding Andersen I aimed to reconnect the brand with it's origin, express the craftsmanship behind their product and to convey that almost sacred love toward bread and pastry that is evident in the Danish culture.

Background
This project was to take an already existing company whose identity was considered dated, or a company that in any way appeared unsuccessful in communicating the essence of their brand. After identifying the core values of the brand, the goal was to develop a new identity system that clearly expressed these values.
Project Focus: Multinational Bakery

In Denmark, baking traditions are deeply rooted into their society, where buying freshly baked bread and pastry at the local bakery is an everyday routine for most Danes. Growing up with a Danish father I got the privilege to learn the painstaking craftsmanship behind a perfect pastry and to experience an almost sacred love between Danes and their bakeries. With this knowledge at hand it was clear that Andersen bakery was struggling to communicating the essence of their product and it's origin. When rebranding Andersen Bakery it was essential to express the refined craftsmanship behind their product and to transmit the love for Danish bread and pastry. The graphic language for Andersen therefore revolved around drawing attention to the product. The stripped back color palette and the dark and dramatic photography both serve to emphasize the craftsmanship and beauty of their newly baked bread. The organic pattern references the Danish baking technique of layering dough to achieve light and crispy pastry. Lastly, the logo serves as a symbol for that almost sacred love to Danish bread and pastry.

In this project we were to choose and already existing brand and imagine them establishing a product series on a, before this, untouched market. I choose Volvo cars to penetrate into the market of home ware, with a series of technologically advanced home appliance products. The technical advances of Volvo has not only made their cars safer but also smarter, technology that in many instances could be used for the very same purposes in our home.Through the sub-brand Sensus, Volvo aims to take advantage of already existing technology and combine them with a series of home appliance that reflects the esthetic attributes of their brand.

Sensus main focus is to make your home smarter and by doing so simplifying costumers everyday life. A product that can measure the level of humidity in your home and alarm you of water leaks is not only a smart solution to prevent costly restorations but also a safety precaution, functional for any household. However, when creating the graphic language for Sensus it was important that the technological and complex nature of the products didn’t intimidate the user. Therefore the packaging aim to clearly and effectively answer to the questions what, where and how. This was achieved by dividing the packaging into three components. The split image of the product show the product and where it should be used. Not before the package opens is the technical attribute of the product shown, referencing a seamless integration of technology.

Edge breaks apart from the often wise conservative, overwhelming and unexciting paint market with the belief that the experience of buying paint should be simple and exciting. Through bold, vibrant graphics that reference the creative excitement of using paint, Edge aims to offer an enjoyable experience for consumers. A system of iconography was developed so that consumers step by step could be instructed on how to mix and make use of the paint. The angled structure of the packaging create visual impact, and was primarely designed to facilitate the handling of paint. Most importantly it offers a solution where the paint could be mixed and used within one unit of packaging, cutting down the need of additional trays and descales often used when painting.

The concept behind One-Way’s packaging system was inspired by San Francisco’s grid-street plan. Throughout the city’s well structured grid plan, minor alleys break apart from the larger streets. These alleys were used as a visual reference to convey One-Way’s belief of exploring the unconventional routes in order to achieve a truly original beer. The name “One-Way” echoes this belief, but also led way to their slogan, “there is only one way for terrific beers”. The detailed nature of the labels reflects the meticulous attention to detail present in their manually crafted beers.

How can a product, by rethinking it’s packaging, be introduced into a new scope of use? That was the main goal when designing a packaging system for breakable glassware intended to be used on boats. Zephyr, a premium glassware manufacturer, urged for a solution where sailors could be offered an alternative to plastic glassware. By crafting a reusable packaging that could withstand bounced from a rough sea, and by integrating a multifunctional tray that could reduce the risk of glassware slipping and breaking on a boat, Zephyr was able to achieve their goal.

This assignment was to design packaging for breakable glassware, mainly focusing on structural thinking. We were asked to rethink how glassware is packaged today and the countless improvements that could be developed from a sustainable or reusable standpoint. Ensuring that the glassware could effectively be stored and shipped without breaking was the only yet essential requirement.

The initial ideas for Zephyr came through my experiences as a sailor. Why couldn’t there be an alternative solution to plastic glassware for a target audience that tend to invest a fortune on the highest quality boat equipment. Plastic glassware simply did not seem to do any boat it’s justice. Therefore, by rethinking the packaging of breakable glassware, Zephyr aimed to offer premium glassware that could safely be used and stored on a boat. Furthermore, knowing the risk of glasses slipping, spilling and breaking, the packaging was designed to simplify pouring and serving through a tray which stably holds the glassware in place. The unpolished finish of the wooden structure aims to resemble the handcrafted nature of their product. The graphics enforces the brand’s connection to the ocean with refined typography reflecting the premium quality of their glassware.

Selected Work Jacob Bang
Hunting the Higgs is a coffee table book intended to bring readers on a journey throughout the subatomic world, focusing on the new discoveries of the Higgs boson. Visually the book aims to create an abstract yet tangible representation of the complex nature of particle physics, thus deviating from the generic representations of molecular structures. Most importantly this editorial strives to encourage unlearned readers to dwell down into a subject that often time can be perceived as daunting due to it’s many unimaginable complexities.

Background
The project here was to create an editorial piece that would explain any form of natural phenomena. I choose the subject of particle physics, focusing on the most recent discoveries of the Higgs bison and the many complexities this discovery came to imply. On July 4, 2012 physicists at the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva made history when they discovered an entirely new variety of subatomic particles, the Higgs. For years, physicists searched for this capstone to the standard model, a theory that describes both the most elementary components that are known in matter and the forces through which they interact. In many ways this discovery is important since it can explain the creation of the universe.
Project Focus: Particle Physics
Concept

Hunting the Higgs aims to comprehensively explain the discoveries of the Higgs bison and to inspire readers to immerse themselves into a complex subject often wise perceived as daunting. Through vibrant, bold and abstract graphics I wanted to invision an almost tangible world beyond the human eye. Contrasting the bold and dramatic graphics the blocky treatment of typography intends to express how physicists systematically structure parts of information in order to understand this subatomic world.

Hypo is a high performance underwear tailored towards extreme mountaineers who often faces severely cold climates. The underwear was created to reheat the body in any events of hypothermia. Hypo Magazine was established to inspire their core consumer towards future adventures while subtly promoting their product. The name "Hypo" functions as an abbreviation of hypothermia while graphic language aims to express the contrast between heat and cold.

Background
The assignment here was to invent a fictional brand from the ground up that would offer an innovative product not yet available on the current market. Furthermore, the project asked to market this new product towards the intended target audience while maintaining an overall cohesive graphic language. The initial idea for this project was drawn from the many documentaries and articles discussing the immediate threat of extreme mountaineers facing hypothermia.
Project Focus: Performance Underwear

"Hypo" is an abbreviation of the word hypothermia and is a direct reference to the initial intent of the product. Hypo is an advanced underwear that reheats the body temperature as soon as the body faces the risk of falling in a hypothermic condition. With advanced micro fiber technology the textile achieves to fully isolate body heat and thus preventing the body temperature to fall below 36 degrees. The visual system uses vibrant yellow and blue as primary colors to reference the heat and cold. The sharp and angled features of the typography reflects the technical aspects of the product.

Contour is a store experience where you can find curated products, each telling its own story of meetings between people, materials and cultures. Forming the store as an exhibition space rather than a conventional retail store, enables the housing of a diverse selection of contemporary designs and products. We believe this will cater toward todays constant demand for evolving experiences and styles. In addition it fills a gap in the market where the large stores often are bound to a specific style and the boutique shops can't achieve to provide a holistic experience. Essentially, Contour is driven by an idea that products where form and function meet, also has a story worthy to share.

We envision a store experience where people come to find carefully curated product lines that tell their own story of meetings between people, materials and cultures.
Project Focus: Fictive Concept Store
Our aim is to develop a multidisciplinary store that functions more like an exhibition space rather than your usual retail store. The brand itself is merely an empty vessel in the beginning that over time acquires meaning and context depending on what is on display at the given point in time. People would visit the store for the experience and in the end select the products that function in their own narrative of life, regardless if the purchase is made in-store or later on online.
Key Words: Functional Premium Progressive Sustainable
We see potential in the American tradition of adopting cultures and combining and transforming them into new interesting ideas or products. It’s not defined by one single aesthetic or style, but rather by the uniqueness of the products in their own right. We live in a time with great possibilities for diverse exposure due to mobility and the easy access to information through digital matters. With these opportunities comes also a demand for a store providing objects out of the ordinary that always are in sync with the current influences. This approach will protect the brand from becoming static and tied to a style, which fills a gap in the market where larger niche players are doing a good job in their own area but have a hard time to expand without constantly having to create new sub-brands.

Contour’s home decor line is the core of the store striving to make good contemporary design available through a curated selection of timeless and functional products that evoke affection An integral part in the development of the visual system was to create a powerful and flexible packaging system that never would over-power the product nor the design. The solution was to strip the package down to its bare essentials, the product itself, its story, and the designer behind it. This enabled us to bring the components together into one cohesive system of product photography, a pared down color coding, and concise typography. The result is a package design honoring the product while telling its own unique story with clarity and honesty.

Contour Essentials ties the store together into one cohesive experience by providing basic products of highest quality that functions as a compliment to the other brands. More than being an extension of other product lines, the objects themselves are to be considered stand-alone pieces of design striving to make every day life better through form and function. The visual system consists of a simple line art graphic that illustrates the product and its use in a naively straightforward manner. The line, or contour if you will, has an opening meaning, but for us it is representative of the narrative of each product that together form the story of Contour.
