4 7 WALLS LEFT EMPTY TO DISPLAY GRAFFITI FROM LOCAL ARTISTS
THE LANDSCAPE DESIGN FOLLOWS THE FIELD DIAGRAM IN ORDER TO CREATE CLEAR CIRCULATION ROUTES AND POCKETS OF SPACES WITH PLACES TO SIT AND REFLECT. THE MAIN FEATURE IS THE ANGULAR PLANTERS, SHAPED IN A WAY TO REFLECT THE GEOMETRY OF THE BUILDING AND TO PROVIDE MUCH NEEDED GREEN AREAS TO THE LOCAL ENVIRONMENT, BRINGING IN BRIGHT & VIBRANT COLOURS TO THE SCHEME IN ORDER TO IMPROVE MENTAL HEALTH OF USERS AND RESIDENTS.

CIRCULATION 1:200 DUALITY
OPEN AND FREE PUBLIC CIRCULATION THROUGH THE SITE IS IMPORTANT TO THE SCHEME TO CREATE A SENSE OF FREEDOM. THE CONTRASTING LEVELS IN THE COURTYARD ARE ALL PROVIDED WITH ACCESS VIA RAMPS THAT ANGLE AT 5° SO THAT EVERY AREA IS INCLUSIVE.

RESIDENTIAL FORM IS TALLER THAN THE COMMUNITY CENTRE IN ORDER TO ALLOW DAYLIGHT INTO THE COURTYARD SPACE AND THE APARTMENTS
THE RESIDENTIAL WING WILL EMPLOY PASSIVE VENTILATION STRATEGIES THROUGH THE USE OF THE WINDOWS AND ACOUSTIC CORRIDOR VENTS
SOUTHERN WINDOWS HAVE ALUMINIUM SOLAR SHADES IN ORDER TO MINIMISE DIRECT SUNLIGHT INTO ROOMS
ALL APARTMENTS HAVE ACCESS TO SOUTHERN FACING WINDOWS TO ENSURE THEY ALL RECEIVE DAYLIGHT
SEVERAL WALLS AROUND THE SITE LEFT OPEN IN ORDER TO DISPLAY GRAFFITI AND STREET ART, WHICH IS ONE OF THE INITIAL ELEMENTS I STUDIED FOR MY CONCEPT

PLANT ROOM LOCATED IN MIDDLE OF THE SCHEME IN ORDER TO HOUSE A HEAT EXCHANGER CONNECTED TO THE GROUND SOURCE PUMP
SKYLIGHTS ABOVE MAIN WORKSHOP AND ENTRANCE ATRIUM TO ENSURES HOT STALE AIR CAN BE VENTILATED AS THESE WILL BE A BUSY SPACES
OPEN SITE CIRCULATION ALLOWS FOR SOUTHERLY WINDS TO FLOW THROUGH AND INTO THE COURTYARD

THE ISOMETRIC PROFILE OF THE BUILDING BREAKS THE TWO PRIMARY FUNCTIONS OF THE BUILDING INTO TWO CONTRASTING WINGS (THE RESIDENTIAL APARTMENTS AND COMMUNITY CENTRE). THIS IS EMPHASISED BY THE CONTRASTING BUILDING HEIGHTS, WHICH FOLLOWS MY CONCEPT OF ‘DUALITY’. TO FURTHER HIGHLIGHT THIS DIFFERENCE EACH OF THE TWO FUNCTIONS HAVE A PRIMARY EXTERNAL MATERIAL PALETTE: THE COMMUNITY CENTRE USING TRANSLUCENT SOLAR CHANNEL GLASS TO REPRESENT ‘LIGHT’, AND THE RESIDENTIAL WING USING PRE-CAST CONCRETE PANELS TO REPRESENT ‘DARK’.

ENVIRONMENTAL SECTION COMMUNITY CENTRE 1:100 DUALITY
1. VELUX ATRIUM SKYLIGHTS - ALLOWS FOR NATURAL VENTILATION 2. ENTRANCE / EXIT 3. WINDOWS - LOCATED IN ALL OF THE SMALLER WORKSHOPS 4. HORIZONTAL GROUND SOURCE PUMP - 1200mm BELOW THE GROUND LEVEL THAT CONNECTS TO A HEAT EXCHANGER IN THE PLANT ROOM. IT IS PLACED HERE AS IT LIES UNDERNEATH THE MOST SOUTHERLY COURTYARD SPACE THAT RECEIVES THE MOST SUNLIGHT 5. DECIDUOUS PLANTS / SHRUBS - PROVIDES SHADE IN THE SUMMER AND MAXIMISES SUN EXPOSURE IN THE WINTER

THESE VISUALS PORTRAY THE EXTERIOR ENTRANCE TO THE RESIDENTIAL BLOCK, THE BREAKOUT CORRIDOR SPACE AND A PERSPECTIVE PLAN VIEW OF ONE OF THE APARTMENT CONFIGURATIONS. MATERIAL-WISE, THESE APARTMENTS WILL HAVE A FAIRLY MONOCHROMATIC PALETTE, WITH HINTS OF COLOURS ON KEY ELEMENTS.

AS THESE VISUALS DISPLAY, THE CHANNEL GLASS WILL PROVIDE EXCELLENT LIGHT LEVELS TO INTERIOR SPACES AND WILL GLOW EXTERNALLY DURING THE EVENINGS, CREATING A STRONG DUALITY OF LIGHT AND DARK BETWEEN THE COMMUNITY CENTRE AND THE RESIDENTIAL APARTMENTS.

9 10 11 ONE OF MY PRECEDENTS FOR CHANNEL GLASS AS A MATERIAL WAS THE NELSON ATKINS MUSEUM OF ART BY STEVEN HOLL, WHERE HE CREATES A SERIES OF EXTRUSIONS (EXHIBITION SPACES) THAT APPEAR AS IF THEY GLOW. IN CONTRAST TO MY DESIGN, THIS SPECIFIC PROJECT HAS A CATWALK AND INTERNAL WALL BEHIND THE LAYER OF CHANNEL GLASS IN ORDER TO CREATE THE RIGHT LIGHT QUALITY LEVELS FOR THE ARTWORK BEING DISPLAYED ON THE INTERIOR.
