The Electoral College By Jacob Houle
Introduction What is the Electoral College? The electoral college consists of 538 electors. The 538 electors come from the sum of the nations 435 representatives, 100 senators, and 3 electors given to Washington D.C The Electoral College was established in 1787. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/06/what-is-the-electoral-college_n_2 078970.html https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUS9mM8Xbbw&index=364&list=WL
How Does it Work? The 538 electors cast votes, just as we do, to decide the president and vice-president of the United States. When voters go to the polls on voting day they choose which candidates receives their state’s electors. The candidate who receives a majority of electoral votes wins the presidency. Majority vote just means at least 270 votes or more are needed in order for a candidate to be elected/win the presidency. The 270 votes needed is half of the 538 electors. Well, 538/2=269. But 270 is close enough to half
My Opinion on this system I disagree with this system. And feel it should be Abolished I Disagree because it is UnDemocratic/Unjust It is undemocratic because it thwarts the will of the people. And thwarting the will of the people meaning‌... that the E.C. does not vote the correct president and vice president into office according to the popular vote of what all of the people in the in the U.S. want.
Hypothesis Hypothesis 1: The People that know about this system that are democrats are more likely to see it change/abolish it. Hypothesis 2: Democrats are more likely to support the abolition of the electoral college. Hypothesis 3: Conservative are less likely to support the abolition of the Electoral college
Methods For my methods I am going to survey classes at JSC, to see how many people know this system. And once they know, are they for or against it?
Samples of convenience
If my hypothesis are supported, that would suggest that a larger more rigorous study would be in order
Conclusion All in All I feel this system should be abolished as it is Undemocratic/Unjust. Thank you for your time hope you enjoyed my presentation
