OPEN SPACE at Concord Naval Weapons Station MArch Thesis 2013

The Concord Naval Weapons Station was a ten thousand acre port and storage facility for bombs and ammunition. It was commissioned during World War Two and expanded during the Cold War. An accidental explosion in 1944 killed 300 sailors. It closed in the nineties and there are plans to develop the land and to turn it into a park. My project addresses these plans while also grappling with the site’s history. I propose two buildings, a memorial and a museum of the land. The numerous bunkers, railroad tracks, and other relics littering the landscape have been left alone.

PROVIDENCE STATION

In this studio we were asked to design a new train station for Providence, Rhode Island. My approach was to design the station primarily as a place for waiting. It is essentially a box. Sunlight projects onto a translucent dome overhead, changing as the days and seasons progress. An adjacent mixed use development inverts the logic of the waiting box, transforming it into a plaza.

AQUAPONIC CITY City of the Future

This studio asked students to create utopian visions for a greener and more accessible city. My project took on the issue of urban farming, specifically aquaponics which combines fish farming with hydroponic agriculture. It is positioned as an element in the city in order to engage the public in the process of food production.

CINEMA AND ARCHITECTURE

This studio explored the relationship between the media of architecture and cinema. The projects shown here are a record of the shadow cast by popsicle as it melts, and a maze construction using screens to produce moire effects.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES

Design Principles is the introductory architecture studio at RISD. It begins by exploring materials and tectonics with paper knots. Site and program are then introduced and the paper masses are transformed into building designs.

HOUSE OF DOG OWNER This house is designed for someone who owns dogs. The spaces for the animals and the people are separate and different, but interwoven so that the level of interaction can be controlled.

MICA LAMP

This project involved strategies for manufacturing, marketing, princing, and distributing the product. It was produced by a laser cutter in Providence. The design was inspired by a chicken.

COMMUNITY GARDEN Chinese Christian Church Pawtucket, RI

In this project our class of sixty collaborated with a communty in Pawtucket to design and build a garden and two outdoor event pavillions. We started by working as individuals and gradually combined the projects until we just had one. Six weeks were spent designing and six weeks building.

JEWELRY DISTRICT APARTMENTS

This studio asked the students to create housing for students and the elderly along with a hotel in Providence’s developing Jewelry District. My project creates a strong urban street edge, and isolates the interior of the block to create a garden for the residents. Access is provided by individual stairways to help enliven the street and the bottom floors are used for businesses and offices. The three types of users are separated into different buildings but share the interior the block.

PRINCE LABS RENOVATION Environmental Control Systems

This project was completed with a small group. We designed a daylighting and dividing system for the engineering labs at Brown Univeristy. The project also included a design for solar panel installation, and an anaysis of the building’s performance and requirements. Our proposal was polycarbonate walls that cut through the building to provide daylight.
