FROM THE CHAIR I am very proud to be the new Chair of the Jacob’s Pillow Board of Directors, following the distinguished leadership of our two most recent Chairs Emeriti, Joan Hunter and Neil Chrisman. This season marks my 13th year on the Board and the continuation of a lifetime love affair with this very special place. My parents, who are still Ted Shawn Circle Members, took us to the Festival as young children. The Pillow’s commitment to enhancing and expanding the world of dance through diverse performances, free community programs and events, educational talks and exhibits, and a highly selective School, is exceptional and unique. Jacob’s Pillow thrives because of its dedicated donor base. Our audience is passionate and involved, and for that we are extremely grateful. Please become a Member and bring your friends and family to Festival events. Your generous support is critical to the Pillow’s ongoing ability to serve as a leader within the dance and broader arts communities. Thank you for both your financial support and for serving as ambassadors of this incredible cultural organization. Finally, this amazing Festival could not take place without the leadership and vision of our Executive and Artistic Director, Ella Baff. The Board applauds her commitment to the field and her tireless efforts to keep the Pillow at the top of the dance world. I feel very fortunate to serve with an involved and diligent Board and the best staff in the world. Please introduce yourself and thank them for a job well done. Enjoy the season!

One hundred years ago this summer, the iconic dance soloist Ruth St. Denis married Pillow founder Ted Shawn and formed a company that spawned American modern dance. Their union was celebrated here with a lavish 50th Anniversary celebration in 1964 (despite their formal separation in 1930), and now their partnership is explored through treasures from the Jacob’s Pillow Archives.

SUPPORTING ARTISTS

THE JACOB’S PILLOW DANCE AWARD The Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award was created in 2007 by an extraordinary anonymous donor to recognize the Pillow’s role in advancing the art of dance. The Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award is given to an outstanding choreographer each year and carries a cash prize of $25,000 to be used by the recipient to support their artistic development in any way they choose. Past recipients include Annie-B Parson and Paul Lazar, Alonzo King, Merce Cunningham, Bill T. Jones, Crystal Pite, Kyle Abraham, and Michelle Dorrance.

The Pillow is proud to recognize John Heginbotham with the 2014 Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award. Originally from Anchorage, Alaska, John Heginbotham is a Brooklyn-based choreographer, performer, and educator. In 2011 he founded Dance Heginbotham, a performance group devoted to the presentation of his dance and theatrical work. John’s work has been presented at Jacob’s Pillow, The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Baryshnikov Arts Center, Lincoln Center Out of Doors, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and beyond.

An alumnus of The School at Jacob’s Pillow, John has performed at the Festival numerous times, with the Mark Morris Dance Group, Susan Marshall, Rebecca Stenn, and as a cast member of The Men Dancers: From The Horse’s Mouth. In 2011, his work was presented as part of the Inside/Out series, and Dance Heginbotham made its Doris Duke Theatre debut the following year. Dance Heginbotham will return July 30–August 3 to present the eveninglength world premiere of Chalk and Soot, which received commissioning support from Jacob’s Pillow. The work features music composed by Colin Jacobsen, and performances by musical collaborators Brooklyn Rider, Shara Worden, and Gabriel Kahane.

“The Pillow has supported me during every step of my growth as an artist, from student to performer to choreographer. I am deeply, humbly, truly grateful. Thank you to Ella Baff and to everyone who makes Jacob’s Pillow the magical and important place that it is. I am so honored to receive the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award.” John Heginbotham Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award 2014 14

A graduate of The Juilliard School, John danced with numerous contemporary choreographers before joining Mark Morris Dance Group (MMDG) in 1998, where he remained a company member for fourteen years. He is currently on faculty at Princeton University and is a founding teacher of Dance for PD®, a collaboration between MMDG and the Brooklyn Parkinson Group.

CREATIVE DEVELOPMENT RESIDENCIES Almost all choreographers struggle to find the resources they need for the very essence of what that they do—creating new work. The Jacob’s Pillow Creative Development Residency Program strengthens the dance field and public appreciation of dance by supporting outstanding artists to create new dance works. Artists live on-site and are given full access to the Doris Duke Theatre and the Pillow’s extensive Archives. The gift of uninterrupted time, work space, and focus in a retreat-like setting is invaluable. At the conclusion of each residency, Members at the Supporter level and above are invited to intimate, informal showings where artists share the process of dance-making and respond to audience feedback. Many of the works artists create at the Pillow are performed at the Festival and in theaters around the world. In recent years, Jacob’s Pillow has supported residencies for Suzanne Farrell, John Heginbotham, Rashaun Mitchell and Silas Riener, Doug Elkins, Chet Walker, zoe | juniper, Kate Weare, Andrea Miller, Michelle Dorrance, and many other outstanding artists.

“The highest priority for an artist is to make art, yet often that is the most challenging. Supporting the Pillow’s Creative Development Residencies provides artists and their collaborators with the time and space to explore, experiment, and create new work, one of our most important responsibilities in this cultural community. I hope to inspire others to also participate in this unique and gratifying program, giving artists the opportunity ‘to do what they do best.’”

VIRTUAL PILLOW

A PRICELESS TREASURY OF HISTORY AND ART BY SARAH KAUFMAN, THE WASHINGTON POST For the Zen of ballroom dancing, watch Pierre Dulaine and Yvonne Marceau waltzing to Strauss in 1982. It’s a minute and 22 seconds of perfection, writ in whipped cream. Or so it seems. You’ll wonder, can humans whirl like that any more? For the answer, keep clicking around in Jacob’s Pillow Dance Interactive, perhaps the closest thing the dance world has to an online museum. Since 1933, companies from around the world have performed at Jacob’s Pillow. In 2011, the Pillow launched a performance video collection (danceinteractive.jacobspillow.org) that now includes almost 200 excerpts of performances recorded at the summer dancefest. A priceless treasury of history and art, this movable feast could very well suck you in by surprise. The format is irresistible: each clip is just a minute to a minute and a half long. You can find them by genre, era, or artist (ranging from a 2010 solo by Kyle Abraham to a Zaccho Dance Theatre work that springs from the Pillow’s history as a stop on the Underground Railroad). What makes the site so addictive is that the performances are expertly edited, with close-in camera work, and each is accompanied by a pithy biographical write-up. Norton Owen, the Pillow’s director of preservation, says he and his staff did not want to “simply to dump stuff online.” “We were trying to put ourselves in the shoes—or the desk chair—of people looking online,” says Owen. “Would people really want to look at an entire dance by Mark Morris or Paul Taylor, or do they just want a hint of something that intrigues them? I think it’s the latter. And if you say, ‘I think that’s wonderful and I want to see the whole thing,’ well, maybe you should go to the theater.”

Pierre Dulaine & Yvonne Marceau; photo Stephan Driscoll. Kyle Abraham; photo Christopher Duggan. Dance Interactive; photo Cherylynn Tsushima.

The archive is not yet an exhaustive chronicle of Pillow performances. It includes excerpts from two or three works per year, going back to a 1937 clip of Pillow founder Ted Shawn, with his all-male group, shirtless and in wonderfully billowing pants. But for the past three years, there’s a snippet from each of the 20 troupes who performed. “I’m pretty picky,” says Owen. “I want to have things that are satisfying, so there’s a sense of beginning, middle and end.” That’s not easy in 90 seconds, but the result is singularly handsome—and rare. Especially valuable is a fragment of a 1942 performance by Anna Duncan, one of Isadora Duncan’s adopted daughters and disciples known as “Isadorables.” No authenticated footage of Isadora Duncan herself exists, so these few seconds, filmed in color against the open doors of the Ted Shawn Theatre with the surrounding trees in full foliage, are a precious link to the modern-dance pioneer. Owen’s staff aims to add one new excerpt a week, digging into the far past as well as scouring recent seasons. The greater goal, he says, is to whet appetites for live dance performances. “What we’re trying to do is present something that’s like a little jewel, in the way that movie previews should make you want to see the movie,” says Owen. “We want to excite people about it.”

MAKING PILLOW HISTORY THE FIRST 82 SEASONS

Jacob’s Pillow has a unique history that has earned it a place on the Dance Heritage Coalition’s list of America’s Irreplaceable Dance Treasures, a designation as a National Historic Landmark, and, most recently, the National Medal of Arts presented by President Barack Obama at the White House. But the story begins long before dance arrived on the scene. Jacob’s Pillow was first settled in 1790 by the Carter family as a mountaintop farm at the crest of a steep, twisting stagecoach road between Boston and Albany, now Route 20. Local folk viewing the zigzagging route from the bottom of the hill thought it resembled the rungs of a ladder, so these biblically-minded New Englanders named the road Jacob’s Ladder. Boulders dotted the farm pastures, among them a large cushion-shaped rock located behind the Carter farmhouse. The family knew well the story from the Book of Genesis, which tells of Jacob laying his head upon a rock and dreaming of a ladder to heaven. Given the stone “pillow,” and the farm’s proximity to Jacob’s Ladder, the property from then on was known as Jacob’s Pillow.

Ted Shawn’s Men Dancers in Kinetic Molpai, c. 1935.

In 1931, modern dance pioneer Ted Shawn bought the farm as a retreat. At the time, Shawn and his wife, Ruth St. Denis, were America’s leading dance couple. Their Denishawn Company had popularized a revolutionary dance form rooted in theatrical and multicultural traditions rather than those of European ballet. Their trailblazing work and cross-country tours paved the way for the next generation of legendary dance pioneers: Martha Graham, Charles Weidman, Doris Humphrey, and Jack Cole were all Denishawn members. But Shawn and St. Denis had recently separated, personally and professionally, and in the fall of 1931, Shawn conducted the last rehearsals of the Denishawn era at Jacob’s Pillow. Shawn had long harbored a dream of legitimizing dance in America as an honorable career for men. In 1933, he recruited eight men, including Denishawn dancer Barton Mumaw and several physical education students from Springfield College, for a new company. The tall and burly Shawn and his athletic dancers were intent on challenging the image of men in dance; they forged

a new, boldly muscular style. In their “offtime,” they constructed buildings still used today at Jacob’s Pillow. In July 1933, Ted Shawn and his Men Dancers started giving public “Tea-LectureDemonstrations” to promote their work—and to pay the grocer. The first audience of 45 curiosity-seekers expanded weekly, so that by summer’s end, people were being turned away at the door. During a period he termed “seven magic years,” Shawn and his Men Dancers toured throughout the United States and in Canada, Cuba, and England, performing more than 1,250 times in 750 cities, and continued the summer “Tea-LectureDemonstrations” at the Pillow. Radical changes were necessitated by the Selective Service Act of 1939, although Shawn also justifiably believed that his artistic statement had been made and that it was time to end his successful crusade. In May 1940, the Men Dancers disbanded and its members joined the armed forces. Deeply in debt, Shawn proposed selling Jacob’s Pillow to Mary Washington Ball, a dance teacher who leased the property and produced the Berkshire Hills Dance Festival here in 1940. Shawn credited Miss Ball for beginning the diverse programming that was forever after the Pillow’s hallmark, but the summer was a financial disaster. Shawn leased the Pillow again in 1941, this time to British ballet stars Alicia Markova and Anton Dolin. Their International Dance Festival was so successful that local supporters formed the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival committee, raised $50,000 to buy the property and to build a theater (performances had been held in the barn now known as the Bakalar Studio), and named Shawn as Director. Despite wartime hardships such as gasoline and tire Students sunbathe near the Ted Shawn Theatre, rationing, audiences climbed the hill on foot and horseback to attend a wide array of early 1950s; photo John Lindquist ©Harvard Theatre Collection. programs: ballet, modern, mime, ballroom, as well as folk and classical dance of many cultures. On July 9, 1942, the Ted Shawn Theatre, the first theater in the United States designed specifically for dance, opened its doors. Architect Joseph Franz, who also built the Koussevitzky Music Shed at Tanglewood, had agreed with Shawn that the theater exterior must harmonize with the existing farmhouse and barns. Franz also hand-cut the weathervane atop the theater which depicts Barton Mumaw, Shawn’s leading dancer. Inside the theater, on either side of the stage, are life-size portraits of Shawn in his Hopi Indian Eagle Dance and Ruth St. Denis as Kwannon, the Japanese Goddess of Mercy, painted during the Denishawn era by Albert Herter. 1961

Other than a year sabbatical for an Australian tour in 1947, Shawn remained at the helm of the Pillow until his death at the age of eighty in 1972. For a time, the survival of Jacob’s Pillow seemed uncertain. Shawn’s designated successor, John Christian, was unable to serve more than one year due to illness. Next was dance critic Walter Terry (1973), but a huge deficit sent the Pillow’s Board of Directors searching again, and in the interim Charles Reinhart (1974) took on the Pillow in addition to the American Dance Festival. A measure of stability came with the appointment of Norman Walker (1975-79), who revamped and upgraded the Pillow’s educational and presentational standards. Liz Thompson (1980-90) initiated an artistic resurgence by welcoming new artists and audiences. Her innovations, such as the popular Inside/Out presentations and open access to the grounds and studios, are an integral part of the Pillow’s personality today; Thompson was also the catalyst for the construction of the Doris Duke Theatre. Samuel A. Miller (1990-94), who had worked in partnership with Thompson since 1986, followed with the sorely needed renovation and enlargement of the Ted Shawn Theatre and the installation of Blake’s Barn. From 1995 through 1997, Sali Ann Kriegsman led the Pillow through a difficult period, eliminating a potentially disastrous $4.8 million debt, orchestrating a range of new projects, and ending her successful tenure with a celebration of the 65th Anniversary Season. The Board then launched an extensive nationwide search and, in 1998, selected Ella Baff to guide Jacob’s Pillow into the 21st century. Ella Baff’s 16 record-breaking seasons have confirmed that her adventurous ideas and wide-ranging knowledge of the field are perfectly at home at the Pillow. With a tenure second only to Shawn’s, she is leading the organization in new directions while honoring the traditions that have made the Pillow a unique institution for more than eight decades: to create, present, and preserve an unparalleled variety of dance forms, to educate artists and the community, and to engage and build audiences —a diversity unique among international festivals. An illustrated history, A Certain Place: The Jacob’s Pillow Story, by Norton Owen, the Pillow’s Director of Preservation, is available at the Pillow Store and as a gift to Supporter Level Members.

THE SCHOOL AT JACOB’S PILLOW Attending The School at Jacob’s Pillow is a turning point for dancers on the cusp of entering the field as professionals. Students travel from all over the world, this year from 17 countries, to be mentored by today’s leading international directors, choreographers, and performers in four distinct programs: Ballet, Contemporary, Cultural Traditions (Tap in 2014), and Jazz/Musical Theatre Dance. They train six days a week in classes and rehearsals, attend Festival performances, meet artists from around the world, study in the Archives, and perform for enthusiastic audiences every Saturday evening on the outdoor Henry J. Leir Stage. The School at Jacob’s Pillow’s 2014 program directors and artist faculty are among the world’s finest choreographers, artistic directors, Broadway veterans, performers, and musicians. They include legendary ballerina and master teacher Anna-Marie Holmes; esteemed mentor Milton Myers; award-winning Broadway choreographer/director Chet Walker; tap dancer, choreographer, and Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award winner Michelle Dorrance; and many other distinguished artists. Auditions for The School are held in five countries, several locations in the U.S., and through online video submissions. Thousands of dancers compete for 100 places annually. The elite young artists selected are dedicated to honing their craft, possess a professional work ethic, and strive for artistic excellence. Many of them go on to extraordinary careers; 46 former students and interns returned as company directors, members, or staff during the 2013 Festival.

Recent achievements by alumni of The School at Jacob’s Pillow include: Christian Griggs-Drane (2013) 2013 Martha Hill Young Professional Award recipient Xiaochuan Xie (2011) Martha Graham Dance Company soloist and featured on the November 2013 cover of Dance Magazine Addison Ector (2012) Apprentice with Complexions Contemporary Ballet Benjamin Freedman (2012) will be on stage this season with Rita Donahue (2000), Lesley Garrison (2003), and Laurel Lynch (2001) in the Mark Morris Dance Group Emma Butensky (2012) and Jack Ironstone (2012) are 2014 YoungArts winners in Tap and Choreography respectively Raymond Pinto (2011) dances with Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal Jason Sparks (2009) made his Broadway debut as Assistant Choreographer for After Midnight, which included Taeler Elyse Cyrus (2005) also making her Broadway debut Joseph Morrissey (2007, 2006) returns to the Pillow in 2014 with The Hong Kong Ballet as Director of Artistic Planning and Touring Nehemiah Kish (2003) is a principal dancer with The Royal Ballet in London Adam Weinert (2003) performed his interpretation of dances by Ted Shawn at the Museum of Modern Art, and appears as part of the Inside/Out Series this summer Loni Landon (2002) received a Princess Grace Choreography Award/Fellowship in 2013

Over 70% of dancers attending The School are only able to take part in these professional experiences with financial support. As Student Scholarship Supporter Elaine Wolbrom comments, “My husband and I have derived tremendous satisfaction from supporting students at The School. To witness the transformation of talented young dancers into real artists in a matter of weeks is magical and awe-inspiring.”

Thank you to all of the generous individuals who support dancers of The School at Jacob’s Pillow. 2013 Contemporary Program dancers Christian Griggs-Drane and Reina Trifunovic

THE LORNA STRASSLER AWARD FOR STUDENT EXCELLENCE

BERKSHIRE

FISHING CLUB 2012 Strassler Award winner Theresa Murray with fellow Jazz/Musical Theatre Dance Program participant Ezequiel Corbalán

From The School’s beginning, young dance artists have needed financial support to realize their professional dreams. For the past 30 years, Lorna Strassler, Jacob’s Pillow Board Member Emerita, and her husband, David, have been leaders in supporting the careers of more than 40 dancers who have trained at The School. Since the early 1980s, the Strasslers have supported scholarships for ballet, contemporary, jazz, and choreography students, enabling dancers from Canada, Malaysia, Taiwan, and across the U.S. to further their artistic development here. In 2004, they furthered their legacy by establishing the endowed Lorna Strassler Award for Student Excellence. On July 25, the 10th exceptional dancer to be honored with this award will accept a full scholarship to The School and a cash prize of $2,500 from Lorna Strassler. The award has made a significant difference for these young artists who have gone on to become choreographers, form their own companies, dance on Broadway, teach internationally, and join acclaimed dance companies such as American Ballet Theatre, Dance Heginbotham, and Aspen Santa Fe Ballet.

The School at Jacob’s Pillow is thankful for this generous and most meaningful gift from the Strasslers.

JACOB’S PILLOW AND THE COMMUNITY Incredible transformations occur when artists, audiences, and the community meet.

DANCE IN SCHOOLS

Asia Pacific Dance Festival

In a Pittsfield, Massachusetts classroom, third-graders huddle. A student, usually reserved and shy, moves to the front and the others fall into line. Last week he disliked science; now he enthusiastically leads his class in moving across the floor, embodying a biological principle. Jacob’s Pillow Curriculum in Motion®, an award-winning program, teaches K-12 students in Berkshire County new ways of academic learning, social interaction, and creative thinking.

JACOB’S PILLOW AND MASS MOCA The Irene Hunter Fund for Dance was established in 2010 with a gift from the estate of Irene Hunter (1918-2008), to encourage the continuing collaboration between Jacob’s Pillow and MASS MoCA, deepen the institutional connections that have existed since the museum’s inception in 1999, and enhance MASS MoCA’s capacity to present dance programming of the highest quality. This partnership creates new opportunities for artists by encouraging cross-disciplinary experimentation; cultivates new dance audiences in the Berkshires by presenting innovative, high-quality performances; and expands the public’s understanding of the creative process. Past co-presentations include Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company, MOMIX, DanceBrazil, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, Armitage Gone! Dance, Cuba’s Los Muñequitos de Matanzas, Chunky Move of Australia, Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal, and, most recently, David Neumann. In October 2014, the Pillow and MASS MoCA will co-present Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award-winner Kyle Abraham and his company in The Watershed. Set to a score ranging from contemporary cello to Otis Redding, The Watershed marks 150 years after the Emancipation Proclamation and 20 years after the abolishment of Apartheid in South Africa, with original choreography in Abraham’s signature blend of postmodern traditions, urban stylings, and classical form. Performances: October 18 at 8pm and October 19 at 3pm

LEAVE A LEGACY

Thank you to the following supporters who provide a lasting legacy by including Jacob’s Pillow in their wills. Laura Ingoglia studied at The School at Jacob’s Pillow in the 60s, and has treasured the experience ever since. In addition to annual scholarship gifts to The School, Laura has made Laura Ingoglia and her daughter Emily. long-term plans for the Pillow in her estate. She says, “Participating in Jacob’s Pillow as a young student and now as an audience member and supporter has truly enriched my life. It is my profound desire that the Pillow be able to continue to nurture the careers of its dedicated students, inspire its audiences, empower performing artists from around the world, and ensure that the magnificent art of dance flourishes for generations.” Thank you, Laura, for giving a gift that will help ensure that the Pillow thrives.
