01 Seoul is red-hot right now.
South Korea perfects the art of cool. Words ANIS RAMLI Images KOREA TOURISM ORGANIZATION
On the streets of Seoul, everyone dresses nice. Seriously. This was the end of Spring. The ladies are fashionable in their trench and the men stylish with their layered looks. It’s quite impossible to spot anyone dressing shabbily. Then again, this is Seoul, the capital of culture and the city of cool. Everything and everyone is drop dead gorgeous. Just like Dongdaemun Design Plaza, Seoul’s new cultural landmark and the hub of every first moving trend. With its sexy alluring curves and futuristic organic design – and you want a selfie with this one – it’s Korea in a nutshell. Everything about Korea is cool and right now. And the rest of the world just can’t get enough of it. “It” is the Korean wave, Hallyu or K-wave, for short. It encompasses everything Made in Korea: from food to fashion, design and culture, beauty, TV and everything else in between. Everybody today wants a Korean culture export. Why? Because the K-brand is the brand of the moment. And there is plenty in Seoul to search for it. On the pedestrian-bursting street of Myeongdong, known as a paradise for hunters of the latest in K-beauty, tourists and locals dodge elbows and cartvendors making their way to Olive Young, one of Korea’s most popular beauty and health shops. Inside, racks of products ranging from snail secretions to pearl powders and starfish extracts are on display.

Thanks to social media, positive feedback from customers, and a Korean government that continues to churn money investing in the latest beauty technologies, Korean-made skincare and beauty products are gaining traction with a crowd looking to have their skin glowing. No churning of stomachs here. In Gangnam, the neighbourhood that personifies Seoul’s metropolitan feel, shops on the leafy Garosu-gil boulevard is an eclectic mix of design, style and fashion. Many storefronts look as though they’re prime candidates for their own coffetable tomes. Too Cool For School’s sleek wooden interior is a chic Monocleesque playground. The Skin Food concept store is a cheery shed of sunshine yellow, with plenty of hanging plants, trellises and garden-style displays. The products’ appealing packaging doesn’t hurt, either. More cool hunting grounds can be found in Garosu-gil in its plethora of trendy cafes and restaurants. Coffeesmith pulls in the well-heeled crowd with its synthesis of concrete and steel that give the café a rustic, industrial vibe. You’ll find locals and the occasional celeb sipping on iced Americano as they watch the crowd pass by. Café Able is another drool-worthy place, with its eco-inspired menu and communal-centric theme. “Koreans are not really coffee drinkers,” explains Tina Park, “but hanging out at a café is considered trendy. Just like snagging a Starbucks coffee cup – it’s akin to having a Prada bag across your shoulder.”

07 A city like Seoul is always on the move. It’s not surprising then that Seoul continues to reinvent its cool. Neighbourhoods such as Samcheong-dong and Yeonnam-dong become hot spots for locals and tourists to linger their time away, visiting chic art galleries hidden amidst traditional hanboks, indie boutiques that house quirky curious and Made in Korea fashion, and alleyways that lead up to stylish cafes and more. Just strolling down the street in these neighbourhoods, soaking up the atmosphere, allows you to sample a slice of Seoul that is shrewd in its marketing and makeover. South Korea really prospered a good decade after the end of Korean War. Decades of diligent planning and investment steered it out from being the world’s poorest to the most successful among all Asian countries today. It continues to reinvent itself; its cultural content exports impacting the lives of a global audience. In 2016, the Hallyu economic asset had mushroomed into more than US$5 million despite an economic slowdown.
05 It’s easy to fall in love with Nami Island. 06 Cheonggyecheon River is a great respite for urbanites. 07 Samcheong-dong is both traditional and modern.
06
Just consider its K-dramas. South Korea’s marriage of creativity and commerce has fuelled a tourism boom in drama locations. Nami Island, the main filming location of the massive hit drama “Winter Sonata”, annually receives 1 million visitors a year. In downtown Seoul, Kyobo Bookstore stands proud near Cheonggyecheon Stream, one of the city’s most recognisable (and successful) urban redevelopment projects.

In comparison, there are more bikes than inhabitants in Copenhagen, with 454 kilometres of cycle tracks and traďŹƒc lights that are coordinated in favour of cyclists during rush hour. While motorists sit in tailbacks, cyclists tend to sweep through the city.

Copenhagen is building even more green routes through the city to ensure a safe and green transport route for cyclists while creating green spots in the cityscape. In 1995, it launched free city bikes for its citizens and visitors. Cycle super highways are already a reality, leading cyclists in and out of the city from as far as 15 kilometres away. In fact, Copenhagen became the world’s first Bike city from 2008-2011 appointed by the International Cycling Union, UCI.

Today, cities like New York and London look to Copenhagen for inspiration. Danish architect and urban planner, Jan Gehl, is known globally for teaching other cities around the world how to plan for a bike culture. It even has its own term: “copenhagenization” or “to copenhagenize”. In short, the city simply invites you to cycle. If you feel rusty, avoid morning and afternoon rush hour, and check out the traffic rules before you go. But
there are just too many reasons not to go on the two-wheeler. With a bicycle, you can go to all the places that can be somewhat harder to reach by foot or public transport. One such place is Kalvebod Fælled, a sprawling natural area just outside the city. And don’t think a bike is made only for two. Copenhagen’s bikes are SUVs in their own. The famous Danish cargo bikes allow you to bring along your kids, shopping bags, picnic basket, and much more along for the ride. So what’s there not to like? And if you don’t feel like

In a city swarmed with five-star brands, St Regis Kuala Lumpur sets the bar high.
City hotels are tricky. Particularly one with a skyline as challenging as Kuala Lumpur. Ironically, it is this very vague and blandly similar city view that suits the St Regis Kuala Lumpur just fine. Far from blending in, the property resolves to make guests look inward. And that is where Starwood Hotel’s ultra-luxurious marquee shines.

luxury and indulgence that quickly envelop the guest upon entering the property. “Our first foray into the city, we want to stay true to the St Regis brand and the Astor vision of bespoke and luxury service and not disappoint our guests.” And with that, it means guests get assigned to their personal floor butler as soon as they check-in. Just don’t envision stiff, upper-lipped, Downtown service. Because the St Regis Butler Service is both legendary and warm.

The butler will become your much needed ally in the short space you call the St Regis Kuala Lumpur home. Get their help to unpack your luggage and, when you’ve over-shopped with little baggage room to spare, you can look to your butler to pack your goods home with none of the stress or headache. Your butler can also be called upon to serve you your complimentary in-room tea or coffee, arrange your dinner reservations or personal shopping spree, point you to the nearest 24-hour convenience store (in case you have late night cravings). One guest e-mailed ahead of her stay to seek the butler’s help for a surprise anniversary celebration for her partner. The butler did not disappoint, creating photo collages that hung down from the ceiling and dressed the room ready for a celebration. Basically, your butler is your point of contact for anything you need during your stay.
Service aside, it is such a welcome to see rooms at the St Regis Kuala Lumpur exuding character that go beyond the standardised four pillows on the bed and identical brand toiletries. “The brand’s guiding principle remains at the heart of our room designs,” Wai Sin explained. “We remain committed in continuing the Astor’s family vision, yet every St Regis property is also given complete discretion to ensure the rooms reflect, in some ways, our distinctive identity.” No two St Regis property is ever identical, though there will be discreet references to John Jacob Astor IV’s love of polo and Caroline Astor (the mother of St Regis founder)’s favourite gemstone, the diamond. At the St Regis Kuala Lumpur, these details are embedded in all 208 accommodations with horse-hair leather panels accentuating the drawers and diamond-motif carpets dressing every room. The property also boasts the biggest hotel room in the city; even entry level Deluxe rooms manage to fit in a walk-in wardrobe, luggage space and a sitting area without having you to feint your way around. The most spread
out layouts are the suites where, with the Caroline Astor Suite for instance, the abode is transformed into a lofty city apartment, with separate living and sleeping quarters, dining and working areas, an ensuite massage room, a colossal bathroom with separate shower and bath tub. Remede bath amenities and a mirror-integrated flat screen television in the bathroom round up the luxe feel nicely. The suite, with its floor-to-ceiling windows, would do well with a panoramic vista. You will find it tempting to bring one home. A lot of thought also goes into the choice of F&B at the property. Case in point: The Brasserie. Rather than replicating a hotel’s

tired breakfast spread formula for example, The Brasserie opts for quality over quantity, and is a larger-than-life restaurant that offers foodies a world-pilgrimage culinary tour. Amid the oven-baked goods and freshly pressed juices are cured snowfish and smoked salmon slices. Signature eggs Benedict oozes with decadent crabmeat and hollandaise sauce, and there is also roast beef on the menu! Local favourites with a touch of upscale classiness can be found at Crystal, the rooftop lounge where rice noodles (kuey teow) is fried with slivers of wagyu beef and served with tempura prawns while the humble sup tulang has succulent pieces of prime beef
ribs swimming in a decadent and hearty broth. Elsewhere, the property takes pride in being the home to Malaysia’s first outpost of Taka by Sushi Saito of Tokyo’s acclaimed three-Michelinstarred Sushi Saito. This and Ginza Tenkuni are fully up to the hotel’s exacting standards. The Drawing Room is perfect as Kuala Lumpur’s smartset venue for the legendary St Regis Afternoon Tea. The chocolate shooter with a hint of banana and scones paired with homemade rhubarb jam are unmissable; just be sure to take the time to savour the range of TWG teas.
Despite its luxurious feel, there remains an atmosphere of comfort everywhere you look in the hotel with arresting artworks, dramatic floral arrangements and an immaculately designed lobby. Stay here and you will come to know classy, thoughtful service with enough edge to stave of the stiff, upper-lip predictability.

If King Kong were not a figment of some moviemaker’s imagination, there’s a very good chance he would have climbed up out of the wilds of Vietnam, where producers of Kong: Skull Island filmed much of the movie. Hollywood had been searching a film destination of King Kong 2 movie since 2015. With wild and spectacular nature as pre-requisites, Vietnam was a natural choice. Its wealth of tranquil beauty, both majestic and primitive, easily shaped and contributed to the no-man Skull Island. For movie buffs keen to experience the otherworldly settings in actual Vietnam where much of the movie was shot, they can now do so with Exotic Voyages that spotlights Vietnam’s raw and unspoiled beauty. Its 10-day “Kong’s Vietnam” trip ventures into the depths of Vietnam from Quang Binh Province to Halong Bay, where dramatic limestone karst mountains provide a primeval backdrop for Kong’s adventures. In Quang Binh, guests can explore the massive caverns of Phong Nha and Paradise Cave in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. Further afield, the world’s largest cave, Son Doong Cave, awaits. With caverns that can comfortably fit a 747 jet and its own localised weather system and underground clouds, Son Doong Cave will give you one of the most captivating adventures you could ever imagine. Be forewarned though that Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park restricts the number of visitors to the site, hence a one year advance booking is required if you wish to explore the cave.
“There are natural settings in Vietnam, off the beaten tourist path, that are as raw and unbelievable as King Kong himself,” said Andrew Carroll, global head of Sales and Marketing at Exotic Voyages. “That’s why the filmmakers came here. That’s why so many travellers come here.” Indeed, Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park that was inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2003, claims some of the top caves in the world, holding records for the longest underground river, the highest and longest cave, the broadest and most beautiful fine sand beaches within a cave, and the most spectacular stalagmites and stalactites. Paradise Cave, at 31 kilometers long, is also the longest dry cave in Asia. In Quang Binh, travellers will visit Nuoc Mooc stream for a picnic lunch, surrounded by dense tropical jungle and celestial limestone karsts.

The UNESCO World Heritage site of Halong Bay, another major shooting location for the film, is also on the itinerary. Here you will see the iconic towering karsts and teal waters as King Kong would have – from high above. A scenic seaplane tour gives a bird’s eye view over the 1,600 isles and islands that pepper the Gulf of Tonkin, and an overnight cruise on the bay immerses visitors in its raw beauty. Another tour highlight is a traditional sampan boat ride deep into Van Long Nature Reserve in Ninh Binh, an often overlooked destination on the Vietnam circuit. Ninh Binh features spectacular waterways and the country’s unique limestone landscapes. Of course, no tour of Vietnam is complete without visiting the country’s two major cities, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. In Hanoi, a stay at the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi will reveal why this has been the city’s most iconic landmark since 1901. With its timeless elegance and colonial splendour, and just mere steps away from the Opera House in Hanoi’s French Quarter filled with exotic food markets and restaurants, this stately abode will transport you to the romance of a bygone era. Vietnam’s bustling largest city, Ho Chi Minh City, rounds out the agenda. The former Saigon boasts of classic French colonial architecture and boulevards wide enough to make your city tour on a classic Vespa the ultimate in city discovery.

Bangkok wants you to rewrite the way you experience malls. At The Commons, yesterday’s fluorescent-lit indoor space has been replaced with a vertical open-air outfit that seems to fold upwards. Indoors, pockets of garden on every floor create a visible green element that is a welcome oasis for urbanites. It’s airy, it’s spacious, there’s a lot of light. It’s signalling to Bangkok’s love affair with a new kind of urban space that offers more than just a shopping experience. “It’s our intention to build first a community, then a mall,” say Vicharee and Varatt VichitVadakan, founders of The Commons. “We hope to promote wholesome living and a true sense of community.” Indeed, the four-storey architecture is not your typical shopping mall. Divided into four distinct areas, each with its own character, The Commons gathers specialised producers offering customers an intimate social experience, whether it’s in shopping, lifestyle or leisure pursuits. Its layout invites people to linger, an inviting change to the numbing mundanity of the everyday malls. There is a distinct backyard vibe, with tables hidden in leafy nooks, wooden stairs designed as hangout spaces, a miniature herb garden for the kids to explore and a cooking corner that hosts workshops on occasion. A colossal fan creates a constant breeze through the tropical outdoor space to cool pedestrians.

A community mall goes beyond a place for those in the neighbourhood to see each other often. It also allows people to drop by and be “at home” in public. When The Circle first opened on the other side of the river in Thonburi, it added a touch of hip to this otherwise sleepy neighbourhood. Yet it served the area well. Surrounded by gated community homes, The Circle targeted the wellheeled suburbians who preferred to stay and shop where they are. Restaurants and cafes aside, The Circle created a close-knit community with its regular family-oriented programmes and activities. Warinlada Limcharoenpornchai, The Circle’s Sales and Marketing Director says, “It’s important to us to continuously offer the community an urban but balanced lifestyle. That is why we are now in the process of re-branding The Circle as well as renovating some of the space.” The new, revamped community mall will be organised around common spaces set within lush green areas. There will be wooden patios to create more opportunity for interaction and activities, with many paths that connect guests with trees gracing the sidewalks and tree-ringed courtyards. With the primary goal of engaging the community with nature, The Circle’s revamped tenants will also focus heavily on producers of organic and sustainable farming with products that promote nature conservancy, artisanal craftsmanship and green ethics. “More than that, once The Circle is relaunched, we want it to become a centre for more family activities; a place they can consider their second home,” says Warinlada.

“I think the popularity of Bangkok’s community malls goes beyond the community experience. It’s a nod to the growing urban trend of wanting an experiential shopping experience, where people feel a sense of ease and belonging,” says Joe Wigunya. The Maharaj, for example, boasts of the best prime real estate address by the Chao Phraya river. It captures the neighbourhood’s charming colonial past, has a riverside promenade and a community garden to chill out. Its string of carefully curated restaurants, cafes and boutiques ensure that guests’ experience is “fresh”, so that they don’t feel like it’s just another trip to the mall. A community mall’s intimate design that allows for specific tenants to be handpicked also promotes relationships to form between customers and retailers. “The longer people linger in a place, the more likely they feel an affinity to the place and the more likely they are to buy and cultivate realtionships,” Joe continues. “So I’d say it’s a win-win situation for all.”

Beyond that, many community malls are shaping to be key activity centres within the community that they operate in. The Commons, for example, began putting bottled mineral water in different areas of the mall for people to grab and put money in honesty jars provided. Proceeds from the water sale are collected monthly and given to those within the community who are destitute and needy. Additionally, The Commons partners with Thai Harvest to launch their first community fridge in Bangkok. Every day, various vendors in the community place their leftover food and raw ingredients that would otherwise go to waste in this fridge. Thai Harvest then comes by daily to collect, repurpose and donate the food to orphanages, halfway homes and other lowincome communities in the area. Indeed, community malls have elevated the shopping experience beyond simply offering a place to pick up a handbag or do groceries. With independent producers preferred over international franchises, and space that allows people to hang out and escape the city, it’s a matter of time before other cities begin to follow in Bangkok’s footsteps. The Range Rover Sport SVR is the fastest, most powerful and most dynamically focused Land Rover ever produced.

The first Land Rover to wear the new highperformance SVR badge, the Range Rover Sport SVR, is capable of accelerating from 0-60mph in a breathtaking 4.5 seconds (0-100km/h in 4.7 seconds) and on to an electronically limited top speed of 162mph (260km/h). The SVR’s range-topping 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine has been developed to produce 550PS and 680Nm – substantial 40PS and 56Nm increases – while its advanced ZF 8HP70 8-speed automatic transmission and four-wheeldrive chassis have been optimised to complement the astonishing performance, whatever the weather.
monocoque – a world first in the segment – along with uprated suspension and firmer bushings, has allowed Land Rover engineers to further increase the incredibly potent engine’s responses. Once the driver lifts off the throttle, for instance, the air-charge is reduced far more quickly than in existing Range Rover Sport derivatives, leading to an instant response for greater driver engagement. In Dynamic mode, these characteristics are intensified thanks to sharper throttle response and more incisive gearshift logic. In addition, the fuel supply is no longer cut on the overrun, creating a characterful crackle through the exhaust.
In initial tests, Land Rover’s most dynamic SUV has lapped Germany’s legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife racetrack in eight minutes 14 seconds, one of the fastest times ever recorded by a standard production SUV. The new SVR unleashes the full potential of the Range Rover Sport’s lightweight and robust all-aluminium architecture, while retaining the refinement, luxury and off-road capability for which Range Rover is world-renowned. In two world firsts for Range Rover, an electrically controlled two-stage active exhaust provides a racecar-inspired soundtrack at higher engine revs without adversely affecting refinement during steady-state driving. Meanwhile, unique optional 22-inch alloy wheels with performance-optimised 295/40 R22 Continental SportContact 5 tyres complement the driver-focused chassis. As standard, new 21-inch alloy wheels with 275/45 R21 all-season tyres offer unparalleled all-terrain capability.
Other unique design enhancements also contribute: larger air intakes in the front bumper increase airflow to the two charge air coolers. This reduces the temperature of pressurised air generated by the supercharger before it enters the engine, maintaining excellent performance even in extreme conditions.
Exterior design enhancements ensure the SVR makes a striking visual impact, while simultaneously boosting cooling and aerodynamic efficiencies. A bespoke interior featuring unique sports seats provides further visual differentiation and ensures occupants are held securely in place during spirited driving. A solid platform provided by the aluminium
The Range Rover Sport SVR has been created by Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations team and will be built alongside existing models and sold through the Land Rover dealer network. Range Rover Sport SVR – designed, engineered and built in Britain – amplifies the engineering integrity, robustness and attention to detail that are Land Rover hallmarks. The SVR’s fuel economy and CO2 emissions are unaffected by the extra performance and remain identical to the V8 Supercharged derivative at 22.1mpg (12.8 L/100km) and 299g/km. This is due to the engine’s advanced and highly efficient design characteristics, which include: class-leading levels of low internal friction; high-pressure direct injection with a centrally mounted, multi-hole, spray-guided injection system; dual independent variable camshaft timing (VCT); and an advanced intelligent Stop/Start system that shuts down the engine at idle and restarts it when the driver releases the brake.

All liquids, aerosols and gels must be carried in containers of no greater than 100ml/3.3oz capacity (approximately 100gm in weight) and placed in a transparent, resealable plastic bag. The plastic bag must be removed from carry on baggage and presented to security
personnel at the checkpoint for inspection and separate x-ray screening. Exceptions to the new regulations are medicines and dietary supplements needed during a flight, including baby food. Proof of need may be required.
Use of Electronic Equipment Electronic devices such as Citizen’s band (CB) radio, remote-controlled devices (such as radio controlled toys), and transmitting devices that emit radio frequencies are not to be used at any time during the flight. These devices may interfere with the aircraft’s electronic equipment, compromising aircraft safety and endangering the lives of passengers and crew. The following devices may be used on board, except during take-off, initial climb, approach and landing; mobile phones (which must be

WELCOME ONBOARD
CAPITAL ATTRACTIONS
ABODE OF PEACE
Small in size but big in attractions, Brunei’s capital has lots to offer.
Brunei Darussalam is a country rich in culture and heritage. It is a small, peaceful, prosperous kingdom on the northern shore of the ecologically-rich island of Borneo. Come and discover Brunei, a Kingdom of Unexpected Treasures. Brunei is arguably best known today as an oil producing country. The nation became independent in 1984 and, thanks to its large reserves of oil and gas, now has one of the highest standards of living in the world. Its population of just over 408,000 is made up of two-thirds ethnic Malay, with the remainder being Chinese, Indian and other indigenous groups. The Sultanate has four districts: Brunei-Muara (which includes the capital Bandar Seri Begawan), Temburong, Tutong and Belait. ‘Darussalam’, the Arabic word for ‘Abode of Peace’ describes Brunei’s Islamic history that dates back some 1,500 years. Today, Brunei remains the world’s only Malay Islamic Monarchy with an unbroken royal lineage that has ruled the nation for the past 600 years.
