Country Managers and Outstation staff.
Dear Guests, Welcome aboard Royal Brunei Airlines. On behalf of RB, I would like to begin this issue of Muhibah by extending our sincere best wishes to His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Malik and Dayangku Raabi’atul ‘Adawiyyah Pengiran Haji Bolkiah on their forthcoming Royal Wedding. In this issue, it is my privilege to introduce our team of country managers located across RB’s network of 16 destinations. These dedicated professionals and their respective teams are focused to ensure we always meet (and indeed exceed) customer expectations and I salute their loyalty and support. Watch out for other opportunities to interact with the ever popular Wu Chun later in the year. Passengers passing though Brunei International Airport this month will notice our updated Customer Service Centre and our exclusive new Premier CheckIn Lounge in the new departure hall. We are also looking forward to the soon-to-open new Customer Service Centre and Royal Skies Service Centre at RB Plaza in Bandar Seri Begawan. As always, it is my privilege to close with a sincere thank you for flying with RB today and I can assure you we will do our very best to continue to earn your loyalty for the future.

AWAY! On two wheels, a Victorian countryside and a canvas community. Words CHUA SIEW CHING Images LAW SOO PHYE
Nine days of cycling. Over 550 kilometres in routes around the countryside of the state of Victoria, Australia. Cool mornings, hot afternoons and yes, even the unpredictable rain showers and hail storms that Victoria is known for. Four thousand riders of all ages riding alongside you, enjoying every single moment of it with last year’s oldest rider being an 84-year-old man! Fully supported by state policemen, experienced riders and volunteers to make sure that every day goes by smoothly, this may sound like a holiday of a lifetime. In fact, you could say that the Great Victorian Bike Ride, more popularly known as The Great Vic, is just that. What ďŹ rst started

as a one-off event to encourage cycling among Australians, The Great Vic has now become an annual event taking place during summer, drawing several thousand participants each year, namely Australians and a few gung-ho riders from other parts of the world. And we are not joking about the huge amount of cyclists who join this riding event. In 2004, a record of 8,000-over riders took part, making The Great Vic one of the world’s largest supported bike rides that bike enthusiasts must experience at least once in their lifetime. Now already in its 31st year (and counting), the event draws not only first-timers, but also regulars who sign up without fail as The Great Vic takes you on a different picturesque cycling route each year. Among the routes include riding down The Great Ocean Road, Bright and The High Country, along lakes, rivers and rangers, the Goldfields, Phillip Island and more. Taking place late November and early December, the ride is divided into three ride options – you can opt to join the three-day ride (which is the easier option), the five-day ride and the ultimate nine-day ride. There will be two days of non-riding – the first when you arrive at the campsite and mid-way so that you can have a day of rest from all that pedalling. Before you think that each day will be a leisure riding day, take note that it can be quite the opposite if you are not used

to cycling up to 90km a day, which is often the longest distance you would be required to cover in any given day. But Tour de France it is not so don’t worry about not being physically fit enough to complete your ride. There are options to board a dedicated bus mid-way that will transport you and your bike to the campsite – though where is the fun in that, right? Otherwise, pedal away with your fellow cyclists and earn bragging rights when you reach the finish point. The ride is fully supported along the way so you don’t have to worry about being left alone or if you aren’t exactly the fastest rider; there will be volunteers and policemen who will make sure you are safe every step of the way so that you can cycle in ease.

The cycling is just part of the whole experience; living from campsite to campsite sums up the off-the-beaten road to this holiday. Some basic camping skills are necessary, as with sharing toilets and showers that will be part of your daily routine. But don’t worry – these “facilities” are cleaned every day. If anything, think of it as a chance to leave everything behind – work, technology, stress – as you enjoy cycling, camping and being surrounded by people who are like-minded and positive, too! One thing is for sure – you won’t go hungry during your time at The Great Vic. Full meals are available, even if you have strict dietary requirements. And, you can always walk out to the towns to get yourself a taste of local cuisine as well as life in the Australian countryside, which can be very charming and endearing. With The Great Vic being such a popular event that passes by small towns that would have been normally unheard of, residents actually make it a point to make you feel welcome to their neighbourhood by throwing food festivals, discounts for cyclists and more. Ready for the biggest cycling experience of your life? To The Great Vic it is then! For more information, go to www.bicyclenetwork.com.au. Royal Brunei Airlines flies Melbourne daily.

This year marks the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta, one of the most important documents in British and world history. Those visiting the UK can look forward to many events planned around the anniversary, foremost of which is a dedicated Magna Carta tourist trail that covers six different aspects of the Magna Carta story. The corner stone of modern freedom, many are still oblivious to the significance of the Magna Carta. Magna Carta matters. It is the foundation stone supporting the freedoms enjoyed today by millions of people in more than 100 countries. Magna Carta enshrined the Rule of Law in English society. It limited the power of authoritarian rule. It paved the way for trial by jury, modified through the ages as the franchise was extended. It defined limits on taxation; every American remembers that “no taxation without representation” was the cry of the American colonists petitioning the King for their rights as free men.
04
For centuries, it has influenced constitutional thinking worldwide including in France, Germany, Japan, the United States and India as well as many Commonwealth countries, and throughout Latin America and Africa. Over the past 800 years, denials of Magna Carta’s basic principles have led to a loss of liberties, loss of human rights and even genocide. It is an exceptional document on which democratic society has been constructed. The Magna Carta Trails invite you to make your own journey, tracing the many locations across England that tells the tales of this important period of medieval history. It provides visitors with 2-3 day self-guided itineraries, including major tourist destinations, such as the British Library, to some of the most beautiful small towns and villages that all played an important role in securing Magna Carta almost 800 years ago. In the London to Windsor trail (4 days), for example, you can stand on the spot of the significant showdown at Runnymede, where King John sealed Magna Carta in 1215. The trail will also take you to the British Library, where two of the only surviving

four copies of the 1215 version of Magna Carta are housed with other original medieval documents in a dedicated Magna Carta room. Conclude your trail on Day 4 in Windsor, the home of King John. Another trail takes you through, among others, the World Heritage Site of Stonehenge, where you can explore one of the Baron Towns. Beginning from Salisbury, you’ll just need two days on this trail that will bring you to what is arguably considered the finest preserved copy of the 1215 Magna Carta. Housed at Salisbury Cathedral, your journey will then take you to Trowbridge, home of Henry de Bohun, one of the 25 barons elected to enforce Magna Carta in the early 13th century. A fourth and final 1215 Magna Carta is displayed in Lincoln Castle in a new Magna Carta vault. As you explore the Lincoln trail (3 days), it will take also take you to Durham, where three editions of Magna Carta dated 1216, 1225 and 1300 are held in Durham Cathedral, recently voted the UK’s Number One Landmark. Additionally, the 1216 issue will be on display in Durham City from 1 June to 31 August, 2015 at Durham University’s Palace Green Library.

Where are the world’s best diving sites, you may ask. For every diver there will always be a favourite spot. The Maldives, Hawaii, the Red Sea. The magic of diving is when you feel one with the underwater world, knowing that few have ever gone there before – a true, beautiful spot. You could, of course, ask a seasoned diver for his favourite dive sites. And then, there’s Captain Mario Gonzalez. An accomplished kite surfer, surfer and diver, Captain Gonzalez has been cruising passengers on the Alila Purnama in and around the Indonesian waters since mid of last year. To say he has accumulated extensive knowledge of the best dive sites in Indonesia and West Papua is putting it mildly. After all, Indonesia’s 13,000 islands represent the world’s largest archipelago. From night diving with Eupalette sharks in Raja Ampat to drift-diving with schools of snappers and jack fish in the Komodo Islands, Indonesia is fast gaining momentum as having some of the world’s best liveaboard destinations. It is no wonder then that in his years of sailing the Indonesian waters that Captain Gonzalez would be the best reference to find the country’s best dive spots. At the top of his list is Gili Selang, located in the south side of Amed. This area on the east coast of Bali, he says, is famous for its hard and soft underwater coral just below the water’s surface.

Gili Selang also happens to be one of the most challenging Bali dive sites but, for experienced divers keen to see pelagic fish, this is an experience not to be missed. With a visibility of 20-25m and water temperature between 20-30°C, divers can expect to see yellow margin morays, schooling big-eyed giant trevally, cuttlefish and pygmy seahorses on the gorgonian sea fans. Following the reef downwards, the sand slope becomes a wall, which is known for occasional ‘spinning’ currents combined with a horizontal current from the other side of the channel.

2/26/15 10:32 AM
In Komodo, Captain Gonzalez suggests divers check out Shotgun, as the locals call it, or The Cauldron. The area is an intense and high adrenaline dive, perfect for drift diving, with amazing changes of scenery between Gili Lawa Darat and Gili Lawa Laut, north of Komodo. “The Cauldron” refers to the bowl shaped drop off along the eastern end of the site, while the name “Shotgun” refers to the currents that can reach peaks of 10 knots as the water squeezes into the narrow space between both islands. The currents bring the micro-organisms from deep waters, feeding the small fish, which in turn creates the perfect hunting ground for the big fish. Black and white tip sharks, giant trevallies, schools of snappers, and jack fish, fusiliers fish and even mantas and dolphins, are just some of the sea-animals divers can expect.

To swim with wild dolphins; white, black and silver tip sharks; Napoleon Wrasses with schools of jack fish; groupers and barracuda; Castle Rock northeast of Komodo Island is the place to be. The beauty of marine life in this area is remarkable and the coral slope is simply beautiful. However, Captain Gonzalez cautions that due to the strong currents, this dive should always be performed in slack tide and divers should never go deeper than 20 or 25 metres. You will also experience Indonesian diving at its best with a night dive in the Waigeo Pearl Farm at Raja Ampat. As some coral reefs cannot be seen in daylight, it is only when darkness descends that they appear. Not an experience to be missed, night diving here will see the waters come alive allowing divers to experience the ocean from a totally different perspective. The Orange Tube Corals glow orange in darkness and the Sea Pens look like little brown furry leaves. Night diving in Waigeo is extraordinary as divers will see creatures rarely encountered anywhere else in the world, including the Eupalette shark, which is brown with dark spots and prefers to walk with its fins rather than swim. Divers are also guaranteed to spot wobbegong sharks, blue ring octopus, toadfish and crocodile fish in almost every dive.

Rounding off the experience is a dive at Kri Reef of Raja Ampat, West Papua. It has already secured a place in the Guinness Book of World Records, thanks to the 374 types of marine life that can be found here. These include barracudas, turtles, tunas, groups of giant trevally and large schools of bumphead parrot fish – divers can even see them crushing the corals with their huge teeth. Here, divers will find the healthiest coral reefs in the world and if lucky, witness sweet-lips hordes in tens as they pass by. To have the best possible dive, Captain Gonzalez suggests staying deep in this location to avoid strong surface currents. Indonesia definitely has a variety of sites to dive, but more importantly, it offers divers a window into a marine life incomparable to anywhere else in the world. No matter which site you choose, expect to see stunning reefs, unique marine habitats and some of the world’s most extraordinary marine species. Royal Brunei Airlines flies Bali 4x weekly.

A Brunei sultan’s concession, a strategic British settlement, a fiery end, and a local rebel posthumously declared a hero. It’s hard to imagine Gaya Island’s tumultuous and storied past has yielded to what is now part of a protected marine park, criss-crossed with boardwalks and jungle trails, replete with luxe tropical getaways for an eco-friendly Bornean adventure. The newest of which is Gaya Island Resort. The resort, a YTL-owned property and known for its unusually high degree of bespoke hospitality, has left nothing of the naturally intervening changes, wrought from millennium ago, to chance. The protected bays with beaches warm and safe, underground gardens of exotic coral reefs, wetlands brightened by colourful birds, sheltered seas alive with gentle turtles and giant whale sharks, a virgin tropical rainforest that is a thriving ecosystem – all of these become a soul-satisfying remedy for anyone suffering from nature withdrawal. It feels a million miles away from civilisation. Yet this serene, bucolic setting is just a 15-minute boat ride from Kota Kinabalu and a stone’s throw away from the international airport. Here is where you’ll get an up close and personal access to a wilderness playground right at the doorstep. The waters at the jetty are famed for its multi-hued coral gardens and home to a plethora of tropical fish, easily spotted through the crystal clear waters. Above ground, rustic trails meander across swathes of pristine forest land. The resort’s resident naturalist provides a complimentary daily guided nature walk introducing you to an exhaustive range of residents – flying
squirrels, pangolins, mouse deers – otherwise gone unnoticed to the untrained eye. There is also a trail that brings you to the beguiling private beach of Tavajun Bay. Best attempted with measured optimism and a gung-ho spirit for the wild’s wicked sense of humour, those who attempt this will be richly rewarded with a bay still untouched by civilisation with a trinity of shy bearded boars, playful macaques and semi-elusive monitor lizards completing the picture. For a more leisurely arrival, there’s also a scheduled boat ride from the resort to transfer you to this slender beach strip, where a rustic outpost offers gorgeous Thai lunches. Or pack a bespoke picnic basket that can be pre-ordered from Feast Village, the main restaurant, as you laze yourself to exhaustion. Tavajun Bay is also home to the Gaya Island Resort Marine Centre, a centre committed to actively improving turtle conservation, championing coral reefs restoration and furthering conservation through education. The marine centre’s key turtle programme includes rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing sick or injured turtles that come their way, either through the public or other conservation agencies. A turtle rescue hotline (+6013 899- 9509) lets the public report sick or injured turtles from anywhere in Sabah to allow them to rehabilitate in the sanctuary that is the marine centre under the watchful eye of its resident marine biologist. Pulau Gaya is the largest of five cluster islands found in the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park. The island, together with Kota Kinabalu, once belonged to the Sultan of Brunei before being ceded to European powers that later had its early settlement

established on the island. When the colonialists began imposing tax on the natives, it was then that local Bajau hero Mat Salleh began a rebellion and burned down the British base. Today, Mat Salleh is outlined in local history books as a local hero, while the marine park, covering a total area of just 49 sqkm, thrives under the management of Sabah Parks, tasked to protect the area and preserve its fragile ecosystem long renowned for its coral reefs, wetlands and mangroves. The resort itself has an onsite mangrove nursery and is committed to sustain present mangrove areas and preservation of its vibrant landscape. The mangrove forests in the resort are replete with various bird species including sunbirds and white hornbills. And it is amid this pristine setting sits the property’s famed Spa Village brand, internationally recognised for its treatments that honour local healing traditions. The resort’s lush mangroves provide the canvas that frames each treatment room, where floor to ceiling windows allow the expansive outdoor views in. Pass the boardwalks and treatment rooms, the heart of the Spa Village building is the Roman Coliseum-esque Mangrove Theatre where yoga, meditation and the Sabah Scent Adventures is hosted. The scent adventure is a fun way to spend an afternoon. Guided by the resident scent artist, the one-hour programme guides you through the powerful realm of scents, highlighting indigenous oils of Borneo before you begin to identify and blend your own bespoke scents.
34
It seems fitting too, for Spa Village to introduce its first signature aroma oil here. Called Clear Waters, a refreshing scent of sage that reminds you of Spring and morning dew, it pairs well with the Rolling Waves massage, a beautifully choreographed experience that emulates the graceful movements of the waters at the spa’s doorstep. Meanwhile, true to the Spa Village ethos, other indulgent treatments all pay homage to local healing culture. Nuances of a complex but captivating Borneon indigenous culture are interwoven into luxurious, sophisticated programmes. The sublime three-hour Unduk Ngadau treatment is a nod to the rice harvest festival celebrated by the Kadazandusun. Locally grown red rice is mixed with corn, avocado and cinnamon for a body scrub mixture that is then followed with an indigenous massage using more rice, this time encased in convenient pouches. Perhaps the most unforgettable treatment to have here is the Borneo Vanilla Orchid And Honey Cocoon. The body is buffed with crushed vanilla pods and yoghurt before it’s drenched in a vanilla-infused honey cacao fruit masque. The potent cocktail of scents and aromas is enough to knock you out into a deep slumber. If that doesn’t do the trick, the head massage after a vanilla honey hair masque is applied ought to do it. All in, it’s an incredible journey of delectable scents and tactile experiences, before the final massage ties the whole sensual affair together. But it’s the contrasts of land and sea that makes this Spa Village experience truly distinctive. Don’t miss out on a treatment

after or during the rain, when the mangroves magically transform into an ethereal wonderland and the air is replete with rejuvenation. Look out for the room with scrub beds placed outdoors. Persuade your therapist to allow you to have your massage here. Best time would be in the late afternoon when the mosquitoes are less likely to be a nuisance. The heady cacophony of sea breeze, lapping waves and mangrove animal cries is guaranteed to transport you to comatose comfort. You won’t ever want to leave. The beauty of the resort can be waxed lyrical to infinity. But, at the heart of the property is the staff and its people. Guests would be humbled by their sincere demeanour, zeal for life, approach to service, and overall genuine and warm hospitality. There is eagerness in what they do: to please you, to make you feel at ease, to have you a peek into their beautiful culture. In the course of that, it is heartwarming to see their personalities unfold, only to further add substance and soul to the resort.
RESIDENTS’ PACKAGE A special rate for residents of Malaysia, Singapore & Brunei, including its expatriates.
Finally, don’t be quick to compare Gaya Island Resort to its other sister property famed for its Emerald Bay and teary-eyed tenor. Gaya Island Resort is totally a resort of its own, that has come together on its own, and can certainly hold its own. There’s still so much potential here as to how the place will mature and grow further into its own – with time. Its energy is undeniable, its essence unrelenting. And as far as a Bornean adventure is concerned, this is one you can enjoy without having to rough it like Bear Grylls.

Getting to know Brunei’s Hoya.
Words GRACE CHOY Images DEPARTMENT OF FORESTRY, BRUNEI DARUSSALAM
Back in 2011, a new species of Hoya was discovered in Tutong, Brunei Darussalam. Ho..., what? Well, unless you are a plant collector, you will know that the Hoya, also known as wax flower, is a much prized and loved plant among home gardeners for its unusual foliage and vast array of flower form. Plus, it’s one of the easiest plants to care for. The discovery of a new Brunei species is significant because Hoya’s diversity on the island of Borneo is difficult to estimate, as many areas still need to be explored. However, despite its diminutive size, Brunei is very rich in the Hoya species. In comparison, Peninsular Malaysia, whose flora has been much more extensively investigated, has only 27 recorded species.

The new Brunei species, Hoya wongii, could not have come at a better time. It is trending among plant growers, and while its botanical names can be tongue twisters – such as Hoya purpureofusca (reddish brown flower) or Hoya pubicalyx (fuzzy calyx) – its caretaking is far from complicated.
Hoyas are quite hardy. They grow well in tropical temperatures, thrive in 50 percent humidity, and have all the colours of the rainbow except blue and black. There are oranges, greens, pinks, yellows and reds, while some even come multi-coloured. They easily grow indoors, under fluorescent or filtered light, and yet when it blooms, Hoyas give you the most stunning image nature has ever captured.

Even Gwyneth Paltrow has jumped on the Hoya bandwagon. She recently introduced a collaboration collection of Goopbranded beauty oils with Hoya as its main ingredient. Goop is the lifestyle blog she founded in 2008. Paltrow’s may be the first in the skincare industry to use the flower’s super-rare oil in a beauty line. According to the website, phytosterols and terpenes, organic compounds that are believed to help the Hoya plant heal and grow, work on skin the same way and can also effectively help prevent breakouts. Elsewhere, the Hoya is also valued for its medicinal properties among various cultures. Chinese medicine uses the Hoya as an anti-inflammatory. Its leaves have been used on wounds and burns, and the entire plant has been used to treat skin irritation and insect bites. Some studies have even shown the Hoya to be a natural air purifier. No matter how you view the Hoya, two things are certain. Hoyas make excellent houseplants for their attractive foliage and, you’ll love its strongly scented flowers. Buds of the Hoya coronaria Blume.

The KRGT-1 is the first bike from the Arch Motorcycle Company, a collaboration between renowned actor Keanu Reeves and Gard Hollinger of L.A. County Choprods. Reeves, an avid motorcyclist, first approached Hollinger at his motorcycle shop seven years ago in search of a custom sissy bar for his near-stock V-twin cruiser. As the two talked about the project and motorcycles in general it became clear that they shared a vision; equal parts form and function. Conversations turned into sketches and 3D models; the vision became bigger and bolder. An entirely new bike came into view, moulding the retro and modern design elements they both love and passion for riding they both share into a new shape. The KRGT-1 features a 122-horsepower S&S 124-CI V-Twin, Ohlins and Race Tech suspension components and ISR brakes. Traditional V-twin side-mounted intakes lay in the way of the rider’s leg, disrupting ergonomics and balance. Shaped and efficient intake dams collect and deliver air to the torquey 124” S&S V-twin keeping it fully aspirated. Multifunction design allows the dams to support and frame the KRGT-1’s billet aluminium headlight housing. Working in conjunction with S&S Cycle, the designers developed the Arch Down Draft Induction System, positioning it between the billet aluminium fuel cells, making the KRGT-1 sleek, comfortable and agile.

The ARCH Cove Reflective tail light, for example, embodies design elements that challenge expectation. The multi-function LED unit sits inverted and hidden within the reflective aluminium rear cowling, eliminating the need for traditional plastic lensing. Meanwhile, the ARCH billet aluminium swingarm requires over 17 hours of machining. Hidden behind its strong sculpted exterior, pocketing and wire channels reduce weight by 55 percent. Titanium adjusters and a hollow chromoly axle complete the assembly.
Each KRGT-1 gas tank is machined from 534 pounds of billet aluminium. This 66 hour process yields two 9 pound fuel cells which are then custom finished and joined. The right cell interior was designed and reinforced to act as a structural chassis member. The entire Arch Down Draft system is contained between the two fuel cell chambers and frame. Every detail is considered. The true test of this commitment occurs when you look in places normally reserved for mechanics. Components such as the multi-functional oil pan/transmission mount and crossmember/battery tray are meticulously designed and crafted. Carefully chosen outsource partners share this demanding standard. Working with industry veterans S&S Cycle and Baker Drivetrain we developed the ARCH Unitized Powertrain. This compact unit provides a strong, serviceable, proprietary system that streamlines and balances the KRGT-1.
As Hollinger explains, the motorcycle has a storied history as a canvas for artistic expression. ARCH Motorcycle Company advances classic design using state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques – uniting refreshed style with modern performance technology – bringing the contours of the past into the present. The Arch KRGT-1 is the culmination of all that’s come before for Hollinger. A studied blend of retro-modern design and performance. It’s the ultimate test of craft and imagination. Truly, the work of a lifetime and a testament to life on two wheels. Production of the Arch KRGT-1 will be limited, with an initial offering price of US$78,000, making ownership a coveted experience.
The bike showcases over 200 parts created at the Arch production facility in Los Angeles, each bike requiring 300-plus machine-hours using state-of-theart CNC and water-jet machinery. Dozens of other proprietary parts are supplied by premium vendor/ partners who share the same demanding standards.

LIFESTYLE IN PERSON
Above ground and below, the duo of Justin Juhun and Scott Mayback keep guests connected to Gaya Island Resort’s natural wonders. Justin, the resort’s resident naturalist, and Scott, resident marine biologist, spoke to Muhibah on the heady combination of nature and wildlife, and why a tie and a shirt won’t likely be in their vocab.
THEGREENTEAM So, what fun stuff are we working on now? Justin Juhun (JJ): Not sure I’d call it fun, but there’s still a lot to be discovered here on this island. Everyday on the trail, there’s always something new. I’m currently working with Sabah Parks to record new species we have here. So that will be interesting. I’ve also just gotten back from our sister property, Pangkor Laut Resort, where I’m doing the same – collecting data and documenting the species of wildlife there. Hopefully we can give our guests a better hike experience in both (resorts). Scott Mayback (SM): Well, mine’s just making sure that we get the public to know we’re here. We’re really quite proud of the turtle work that we do here at Gaya Marine Centre in Tavajun Bay. I know you saw how empty the touch pool was. Empty means it’s
56
good. It means we don’t have sick turtles or presumably, there are no sick turtles out there. We want people to know that we’ve got a dedicated hotline (013 899-9509) where they can call if they see or know a sick turtle. Anywhere in Sabah. We will continue with our 3R mission: Rescue, Rehabilitate, Release. And hopefully, we’ll be able to contribute more to turtle conservation.
Must be a fulfilling job. JJ: For me, it’s when guests who do the trail and often see stumps or branches as just part of the forest suddenly come out (of the trail) more informed. What I try to share with them is that these are all part of a habitat. Each stump or branch plays a role in the forest. And I think just by them understanding that is a great deal for me. They now look at the trail with different eyes, instead of “oh, here’s another branch” or “there’s another tree stump”.
SM: We do a turtle education project with one of the schools here. The first class, the kids are just unsure and not particularly excited. They kind of drag their feet to the classroom, dreading the session. Then by the second and third session, everyone gets all excited and everyone wants to learn something new about the turtles. When kids start getting it, that’s when I feel we’ve done something good.
Guess a 9 to 5 job isn’t your thing, then? JJ: I grew up in the forest. I was born in the forest. For me, this is where I’m most comfortable in. I get to do what I love and share with the guests what I know. And it’s never boring. It can be stressful (laughs), but never boring. SM: (interjects) Actually, it gets challenging for us when we have to be in a conference or a talk.

JJ: Yes! (laughs) SM: I mean, I cannot just sit behind a desk. Justin and I – we just can’t sit still! The only time I’m behind a desk is when it’s reports time. That’s when I’ll just blare on the music, type like crazy and just drink lots of coffee! Safe to say there’s no shirt and tie in the wardrobe? JJ: (Laughs). SM: Absolutely not! Justin, I saw the stream running in the forest. It was amazingly clear. I was told you once tried to find the water source. Successful? JJ: That was really hard to do. Jaime (the other naturalist), myself and Scott went on this hike just to find where the water came from. We used GPS at first. Then it was just giving us wrong directions. In the end, I just decided to turn it off and go with what I know: by looking
around at the habitat and letting that guide me. But this island – a lot of people are unaware of it – is huge. At one point we saw the water above ground and then it disappeared underground. This will be my challenge. But I’m going to find it. SM: (looking at Justin) Remember that time when someone told you there was no way you could hike from the resort to Tavajun Bay? JJ: Yup, that’s another one. But I refused to believe it. So I just hiked. Scott came with us that time, too. So, did you arm yourself with a machete or something? SM: My diver’s knife! (laughs) JJ: Yup. His diver’s knife. I mean, not a machete, but I had something with me to clear the trail. What I’m trying to say is, I was set to prove those people wrong. SM: (pats Justin on the back) And you did prove them wrong!
JJ: I did. It took awhile, but we found the trail that took us from the resort to the Bay. It was a loooooong hike, but it was worth it! What’s next for you both? JJ: We’re hoping to open up more trails. The resort is just over two years old. There is a lot of potential we can do here with nature. And I’m excited about that. We’re also presently training a new guide so we can do more hikes. SM: The Gaya Marine Centre will continue with its education and awareness programmes. We’re also continuously working to clear the rubbish off the waters surrounding the resort to preserve the corals. Possibly the next project, if budget permits, is to try to get a garbage net to contain the floating rubbish. It’s all about giving our guests the best possible nature experience when they’re with us.

> The maiden Royal Brunei Airlines flight to Singapore left Bandar Seri Begawan on a Boeing 737-200 on 14 May, 1975.
> RB added a Boeing 737, the quick change convertible aircraft, to its fleet. This aircraft allowed for either an all-passenger or an all-cargo configuration, or a combination of both.
As Brunei Darussalam’s national carrier, Royal Brunei Airlines serves not only as the coming of age of this tiny Sultanate, but today cements itself as a serious competitor in the region.
> Two Boeing 737 aircraft were put into service flying five times a week to Singapore, two times to Hong Kong, and seven times to Kota Kinabalu.
> RB accepted the delivery of its Boeing 757 aircraft that featured a redesigned livery combining Brunei’s traditional royal colours on 16 May, 1986.

Alcohol-free Environment Policy Royal Brunei Airlines operates alcohol-free flights to all destinations.
Hand Luggage For your safety and comfort, you may store your hand luggage in the overhead lockers or under the seat in front of you. Please do not hesitate to ask our cabin crew for help in stowing your luggage properly. Be careful when
opening the overhead luggage compartments, as items dislodged by aircraft movement may fall on you or fellow passengers.
Liquids, Aerosols and Gels (LAG) Various countries have implemented restrictions on the carriage of liquids, aerosols and gels in compliance with new guidelines set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Passengers transiting through airports and carrying any liquids, pastes and gels in containers over 100ml may be asked to dispose of the items at security checkpoints. These restrictions may affect your ability to carry duty-free purchases onboard the aircraft. Customers are advised to check with duty free personnel before making their purchases. All liquids, aerosols and gels must be carried in
containers of no greater than 100ml/3.3oz capacity (approximately 100gm in weight) and placed in a transparent, resealable plastic bag. The plastic bag must be removed from carry on baggage and presented to security personnel at the checkpoint for inspection and separate x-ray screening. Exceptions to the new regulations are medicines and dietary supplements needed during a flight, including baby food. Proof of need may be required.
Use of Electronic Equipment Mobile phones cannot be used at any time during the flight. They should be switched off as soon as the cabin crew makes the announcement. Other electronic devices included in this list are: Citizen’s band (CB) radio, remote-controlled devices (such as

WELCOME ONBOARD
CAPITAL ATTRACTIONS
ABODE OF PEACE
Small in size but big in attractions, Brunei’s capital has lots to offer.
Brunei Darussalam is a country rich in culture and heritage. It is a small, peaceful, prosperous kingdom on the northern shore of the ecologically-rich island of Borneo. Come and discover Brunei, a Kingdom of Unexpected Treasures. Brunei is arguably best known today as an oil producing country. The nation became independent in 1984 and, thanks to its large reserves of oil and gas, now has one of the highest standards of living in the world. Its population of just over 408,000 is made up of two-thirds ethnic Malay, with the remainder being Chinese, Indian and other indigenous groups. The Sultanate has four districts: Brunei-Muara (which includes the capital Bandar Seri Begawan), Temburong, Tutong and Belait. ‘Darussalam’, the Arabic word for ‘Abode of Peace’ describes Brunei’s Islamic history that dates back some 1,500 years. Today, Brunei remains the world’s only Malay Islamic Monarchy with an unbroken royal lineage that has ruled the nation for the past 600 years.

LAPAU AND DEWAN MAJLIS
The Royal Ceremonial Hall features an exquisite golden dome and hosts all of the Sultanate’s traditional royal ceremonies.
