A good place to begin is the Design Museum. Its permanent collection provides a concise and comprehensive history of Finnish design that will take you from the trailblazers of the late 19th century to Alvar Aalto – the father of Finnish Modernism – and into the present. Finnish icons Marimekko, Artek and Iittala have all recently moved house but are found in and around the main Esplanade and close to Market Square.

Put your routine on pause at Hotel Stripes with its stories on neighbourhoods past, forgotten icons and rich heritage. Words ANIS RAMLI Images HOTEL STRIPES KUALA LUMPUR

24

MUHIBAH

Mohamed, the soft-spoken staff of a decades-old briyani shop on Jalan Dang Wangi, is not sure he’s ready for so much cool to land on his block. He wipes the drinks counter swiftly, peeks outside and shook his head after catching sight of the newly minted Hotel Stripes with its raw brick façade. Hotel Stripes is the latest addition to descend on this central KL neighbourhood of generation-old eateries and traditional WWII shophouses, blocks from the glamorous Bukit Bintang shopping strip. It is fast transforming this once nondescript enclave into a new hangout of urban chic. The small lobby-cum-reception will surprise. A solo sofa decorates it, sitting under a double spiral pendant chandelier that hangs from a curved ceiling. But if waiting around seems unthinkable (the area can get a tad stuffy with sudden multiple check-ins), then buy time at The Snug upstairs. True to its moniker, this place drips with cosiness and is perhaps the star of the property. It’s also where breakfast is served and the place you go to down a cappuccino between runs and grab a sandwich (or salad) from the fridge. “The grab-n-go concept is very popular among our guests,” says Hotel Stripes Manager, Alvin Khoo. “It’s easy for guests who do late check-ins or those doing working lunches and multitasking.” Mohamed shook his head again at the term “grab-n-go”. “Is that fast food? I don’t see why people need to rush, rush, rush,” he says. “But that’s KL, I suppose. No, you need to take time to enjoy the food. It’s like how we take time to cook and simmer our curries.”

Perhaps Mohamed does have a point. To Stripe’s credit, there are parts of the hotel that make you want to linger. Case in point: the rooftop swimming pool and sun deck. It goes without saying that the view here is worth to wax lyrical about (and if you do, there’s a vintage-inspired little notebook in every room for you to do just that). Man Tao, the drinks bar, whips up some mean mocktails. The Singtini is the kind of cool, sexy drink you want to have after a relaxing dip in the afternoon – with its sugar-rimmed martini glass that has a blend of elderflower juice, watermelon puree and basil leaf. More studiedly hip accents can be seen as one enters the bedrooms. Guests will be enveloped in browns and creams – practically the only colours except for the splash of blue on the carpets. Conventional gives way to chic, with the likes of a Hollywood LED vanity mirror, an egg-style stool by the writing desk and sleek pendant drop light as fixture. The best of the room range is the Executive Studio, with a bit more room to lounge in, a sofa bed and a tub in the bathroom (though we wished for extras to actually run a bubble bath). Book the unit that offers the view of downtown KL’s only green lung, the KL Forest Eco Park, and you’ll sleep beneath the gaze of the iconic KL Tower that, on some nights, light up for special occasions. How’s that for a personalised vista? The hotel’s indelible vibe continues at its other F&B outlet, Brasserie 25, a relaxed French bistro. The sequence of little booths gives this place a relaxed and warm ambience and, while it’s not haute cuisine with froths and foams, the menu includes some fine French classics. Start with French onion soup, foie gras and escargot before taking on regional brasserie fare such as the cassoulet duck confit with lamb sausages and braised beef cheeks. Its French afternoon tea, le gouter (pronounced “luh goo-tay”), is a great introduction to how the sybaritic French endure afternoon nibblets. This daily fare serves up crackly-crusted macarons, buttery madeleines, luscious éclairs and other noteworthy sugarladened bites that go perfectly well with a strong espresso.

For all its city-chic, edgy-minimalist feel, Hotel Stripes remains deeply rooted in the neighbourhood’s past. Mere steps from it is many of KL’s famed food institutions. On Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman (“TAR” for short), the city’s thoroughfare for cheap eats and shopping, Capital Cafe is the epitome of the country’s congenial multi-racial relations. Here, two generations of three families operate under one roof to offer Chinese Hokkien, Indonesian Minang and Indian-Muslim fare. The food may be old school, but the flavour is definitely authentic. Right across the hotel, in a simple wooden warung (shack), is possibly the best mee mamak (fried noodles) this side of the valley. Let not its shanty appearance put you off, but guests get a kick from the warung’s name: mee mamak Cowboy. Another establishment not to be missed is on Jalan Dang Wangi – MMZ Bistro, well known for its hearty soups. People come from all over the country – we kid you not – to savour its range of hearty beef bone broth. “We will always encourage guests to expand their experience with us beyond our property,” says Khoo. “If you talk about KL, this is possibly where it all began.” It is no secret that the hotel’s brick façade, for instance, pays homage to the city’s first brick buildings of the area, replacing the common wood-andthatch architecture common during the British rule. “It will take guests through the history of the first kiln to be founded in Brickfields and we hope, by them discovering this unique piece of the city’s history, it will also amplify their experience of staying with us.” Royal Brunei flies Kuala Lumpur 2x daily. Who best to promote Australia to the world than Aussie born-and-bred, Chris Hemsworth? The Thor star recently went back to his home country as Tourism Australia’s global ambassador and reconnected with some of his favourite and never-before-explored places. He says, “Growing up in Australia, you can sometimes take it all for granted. But after being away for ten years and coming back, exploring some of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen has reminded me how unique and impressive Australia is, and how lucky we are.” Hemsworth recalled a childhood of uniquely Australian experiences – living on a cattle station in the Northern Territory and learning how to surf the waves on Phillip Island, Victoria. He also spent his days enjoying the crystal clear waters of Byron Bay with his children. While touring the Australian outback, Hemsworth watched the sun set over Uluru, learning about Australia’s rich Indigenous culture and swimming in waterholes in The Kimberley. “Exploring Australia with my family has been the most incredible experience and one I will never forget. The natural beauty of Australia always surprises me. From the Red Centre and Uluru with rich desert landscapes, to the gorges and remote waterholes of the Kimberley, to vibrant islands like Hayman Island where you have crystal clear water and white sand beaches. Australia really does have it all.”

Fit For A Queen: Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s Creations by Balmain opened in August 2016 at the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles in Bangkok. Since then, locals, tourists and fans of Her Majesty have been visiting the museum for a close-up look of her regal wardrobe. The museum curated the exhibition in honour of the auspicious occasion of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s seventh cycle birthday anniversary on August 12, 2016. Fit For A Queen focuses on the 22-year-long working relationship between Her Majesty and French couturier Pierre Balmain. In 1960, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit embarked on a historic state visit to 15 Western nations. The tour was the West’s formal introduction to the youthful royal couple. Her Majesty had determined that she would need a fashionable yet seasonally appropriate Western wardrobe for the six month-long tour, and engaged renowned Paris couturier Pierre Balmain to design it.

Balmain proved to be an excellent choice, creating a regal wardrobe – much of it made from Thai silk – for Her Majesty. His exquisite attention to detail can be seen reflected in the exhibited wardrobe and handiwork – with exquisite embroidering, intricate beading and use of gorgeous lace. Thus elegantly attired, Her Majesty garnered tremendous interest and acclaim, which contributed greatly to the tour’s success. The trip established the Queen as an international tastemaker and the era’s epitome of royal style. Balmain, along with François Lesage, who had provided the embroidery for Her Majesty’s formal clothes, remained closely involved with the development of Her Majesty’s style. Balmain designed the Western-style clothes for Her Majesty’s continued international travels, and he and Lesage soon began to make the Queen’s Thai national dresses as well.

From the early 1970s onwards, Balmain and Lesage’s work extended to developing strategies to transform Thai village silks into fashionable Western attire, which was worn by Her Majesty to promote the work of her SUPPORT Foundation. The exhibition will offer visitors the chance to view more than 30 of Her Majesty’s most stylish daytime, cocktail and evening dresses, plus related accessories and several pieces of luggage custom made by Louis Vuitton for Their Majesties, which were never before displayed. Design sketches and embroidery swatches lent by Balmain S.A. and the House of Lesage in Paris will help illuminate the design and creation processes. The exhibition is further enriched by period footage and photographs. A lavishly illustrated catalogue has also been published in Thai and English in partnership with Bangkokbased River Books. TURTLE Hatching a programme to secure the future of Brunei’s gentle marine reptiles. Words LIN JI LIAW Images BRUWILD

Delve into the marvel of Brunei Darussalam’s waters, one would find three species of turtles. All but look alike, except to the keen sighted who can tell them apart. There’s the Hawksbill turtle with its bird-like beak, often found feeding on corals, helping to keep the health of our reef in check. The Olive Ridley, its colour changing from grey to olive green as it matures, can be found closer to shore feeding on crustaceans and molluscs. Perhaps much easier to find is the Green turtle that swims in the Brunei Bay, grazing and feeding almost exclusively on seagrass. From our murky shores to the deep waters, these gentle creatures have been playing a vital role in the dynamic equilibrium of our marine ecosystems. As progress in human development takes place, these sea turtles face increasing threats due to habitat loss. Equally worrisome, these species face pressure from over-harvesting of their eggs and accidental mortality

in fishing nets. There is urgency in conserving these species as their numbers are declining rapidly. The Hawksbill turtle is considered ‘Critically Endangered’ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), positioning them very close to extinction in the conservation chart. The Green turtle seems to be moving towards the same fate as this species is considered ‘Endangered’ while the Olive Ridley is now ‘Vulnerable’. Working with global efforts to protect these species, local conservation group BruWILD (Biodiversity and Natural History Society) launched their ‘Saving Our Turtles’ initiative in 2014. This initiative builds on a four phased programme by first ensuring that its members are equipped with the right know-how through both theoretical and practical training in sea turtle biology and conservation techniques. This foundation then serves to build the next three

interactive phases of the initiative where school children and the public are actively engaged to participate in saving turtles. The most popular programme involves learning about sea turtles through fun-filled quizzes and getting up close with the turtles at Meragang Biodiversity Centre, where rescued injured turtles are being rehabilitated. The public can also volunteer with the BruWild team in feeding the Centre’s turtles and keeping the turtle ponds clean. Sometimes, if the timing is right, they can also observe baby turtles, under the care of the Wildlife Division, Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism Brunei, before they are released. Together with Brunei Wildlife Division, BruWILD also organises wildlife roadshows in local schools. The team conducts talks, presentations and interactive games that are specifically designed to educate school children in sea turtles biology and the importance of conservation. BruWILD now seeks to expand into the fourth phase of its ‘Saving Our Turtles’ initiative. It hopes to encourage the public to symbolically adopt a sea turtle where funds generated will be used to care for, and eventually release, sea turtles at Meragang Biodiversity Centre back to the wild. Simultaneously, BruWILD is also looking to kick-start a seagrass propagation project as a means to provide stock for seagrass habitat rehabilitation. On a mission to bridge the gap between sea turtle conservation and coastal development, BruWILD is dedicated to continuously provide educational, fun and interactive sea turtle programmes to increase the community’s understanding and participation in building a future where human and nature and sustainable development and natural heritage can coexist and mutually thrive. PENYU BRUNEI Menetaskan program untuk menjamin masa depan reptilia marin Brunei. Teks LIN JI LIAW Imej BRUWILD

The new Chevrolet Colorado is the ultimate truck for work and play.

The new Chevrolet Colorado is a tough and capable pickup truck that matches any lifestyle, with a refined design, superb engine performance, excellent handling and serious off-road capability. Its exterior and interior have been redesigned with a tough yet sophisticated appearance, making it an ideal truck for work and play. The upgraded 2.5L Duramax fourcylinder turbo-diesel engine now also benefits from a variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) producing 132Kw (180 PS) of power and 440 Nm of torque. The new Colorado retains the same serious off-road capability as its predecessor, but adds impressive on-road refinement and a go-anywhere spirit driven by advanced technology.

Its stunning design has a tough yet refined appearance, with more angular lines and strong proportions – a nod to its American truck DNA. A distinctive and sporty front fascia along with a muscular hood gives the truck a tough stance. Combined with slim LED daytime running lamps, a new alloy sports bar, alloy wheels and chrome exterior door handles, the Colorado has an unmistakable road presence that ensures it stands out from the crowd. Inside, the new Colorado provides superior comfort and technology. Its redesigned centre console boasts an easy-to-use, intuitive layout featuring an 8-inch colour touch screen that houses Chevrolet’s latest MyLink infotainment system, including Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto® where available. Prestige elements have been introduced with a focus on

spaciousness, refinement and technology. Soft-touch but durable materials, fabrics and finishes are used throughout the truck, ensuring it is as comfortable as it is capable. New trim inserts feature tailored stitching to create a new level of refinement. With regards to driving performance, the new Colorado is underpinned by a range of key engineering changes co-developed by an experienced team of GM engineers from Brazil, Thailand and Australia, to deliver car-like refinement. With significant input and involvement from around the world, engineers shared their expertise throughout the development process, effectively responding to customers’ feedback about what they wanted in a truck. Major changes to the new Colorado’s suspension deliver improved body control and ride isolation to cope with the variety of challenging roads found in the region. Changes include improved damper technology and hardware upgrades, and revised spring rates to provide more control. The vehicle has new engine and transmission mounts, while some body mounts have been changed from compression to shear mounts, providing a more composed ride with better isolation and control. The introduction of Electric Power Steering (EPS) on upper-specification models creates a more responsive feel, giving the driver increased confidence. A reduction in power train noise and vibration in the new Colorado was achieved with the introduction of

a Centrifugal Pendulum Absorber (CPA) torque converter in 2.5L VGT models. This technology is more commonly found in premium diesel passenger cars. The CPA torque converter helps reduce engine noise and vibration by cancelling out torsional vibrations in the driveline normally felt in the cabin. The added benefit to the CPA is the ability to apply a revised transmission calibration strategy resulting in drivability and fuel economy improvements. Additionally, the new Colorado’s relocated balance shaft, along with a new engine acoustic pack ensures a quieter and more comfortable driving environment. A significant update was also made to the wind noise package, including new parts, design revisions and tuning. The Colorado is 8 percent quieter on the road than before thanks to newly redesigned door, window and windshield seals; front door glass that is 10 percent thicker; and a new aerodynamic headlamp design.

Providing new levels of active safety including Forward Collision Alert, Lane Departure Warning and Front Park Assist the new Colorado is considered one of the most high-tech vehicles in the region and safest. Additionally, it features an auto rain sensor, auto headlamps and the remote-start function. The remote-start function is especially useful during hot weather when the engine can be started using the key fob, allowing the cabin to be cooled sufficiently before occupants get into the vehicle. LIFESTYLE IN PERSON

Radisson, together with the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism, celebrated the Brunei Gastronomy Week recently. How was that for you? It was an amazing experience for me and the team during gastronomy week. I am a great believer of using local produce wherever I work. Since arriving in Brunei, I have been exploring local delicacies around the country and got the desire to give local fare a twist. Once I heard that we got the opportunity to participate in the Brunei Gastronomy Week, I involved my team to plan and develop the regional cuisine with modern culinary twists. Just to name a few: Nasi Lemak sushi roll, Beef Rendang Burger with Bergedil Kentang, Sambal Tuna Sliders, kueh tako wrapped in pandan leaf, dark chocolate ondeh

56

MUHIBAH

ondeh with isomalt, and durian sorbet. We also did some traditional popular dishes like Ayam Pansuh (chicken cooked in bamboo). How would you describe Bruneian cuisine? Bruneian cuisine is influenced by the neighbouring countries as many of the indigenous people are related to each other. At the same time, it has its own twist. As part of South East Asia, usage of local spices, fresh seafood and of course Halal products, make the cuisine different. Some of the unique dishes are Ambuyat (made of sago starch and accompanied with different condiments and sauces) and Ayam Pansuh.

If you were to take one Bruneian dish and give it a modern twist, what would it be and how would you do it? One of my favourite delicacies in this country is kueh, which can be cakes, dumplings, pastries or puddings (basically baked and steamed). Appearance wise they are very different from western delicacies; even the texture. So we have decided to keep the real texture and flavour as it is, but add modern culinary trends and some western touches. Hazelnut praline celorot (a cone-shaped traditional sweet snack made of rice flour) was one of the outcomes, infused with homemade hazelnut praline paste instead of gula melaka (palm sugar).

to create. My motto is clear: to give an extraordinary experience during the Holy month to Bruneians with local and modern delicacies. How would you describe your own style of cooking? I believe in taste and ingredients rather than following ancient trends in culinary. My priority is understanding how important each guest is and how different each of their tastes and palates are. That gives me a platform to twist my cooking style. In terms of challenges, I take the reverse way to make myself tougher than challenges to forward my culinary journey. What are the present trends in culinary you are embracing right now? The culinary world is growing and chefs are experimenting more and more. As a chef, I always create my menus and dishes around the local produce. Brunei has tropical weather which limits you, but again there are many possibilities to play with ingredients. At our fine dining restaurant Deals, we opted for a modern contemporary trend. One of the characteristics of the style of cooking is to use each selected ingredient with utmost care, which follows my mantra of using local produces. At Tasek Brasserie our new a la carte menu showcases the modern style of presentation and twist with flavourful ingredients. Soon we will be launching our Family Sunday Brunch at

the pool side; the concept will be based on food market selection, Asian Tapas at poolside Bar, Kids Cooking classes and many more. Bruneians rarely eat out. Do you find that a challenge and how do you hope to entice them to dine at Radisson? We believe in providing great service and high quality products for a competitive price. Our regular Bruneian guests know and understand our philosophy and therefore we are a preferred destination for functions, meetings and dining. Even in this competitive market we are able to stay ahead of the competition by staying true to our beliefs. We are nearing the Ramadhan month and already brainstorming on the dishes we’re going

What, in your opinion, separates good chefs from great chefs? Good chefs are great in preparing a meal through the way they have learned how to prepare it, whereas great chefs love to experiment and think out of the box to get a result that no-one would’ve expected (in a positive way). If you’re not working, what are you likely to cook for yourself? I always try to find some twist with available ingredients at home as I love to cook over the weekend or in social gatherings at my place. No hard and fast rules for recipes – just create something with a punch.

WELCOME ONBOARD

CAPITAL ATTRACTIONS

ABODE OF PEACE

Small in size but big in attractions, Brunei’s capital has lots to offer.

Brunei Darussalam is a country rich in culture and heritage. It is a small, peaceful, prosperous kingdom on the northern shore of the ecologically-rich island of Borneo. Come and discover Brunei, a Kingdom of Unexpected Treasures. Brunei is arguably best known today as an oil producing country. The nation became independent in 1984 and, thanks to its large reserves of oil and gas, now has one of the highest standards of living in the world. Its population of just over 408,000 is made up of two-thirds ethnic Malay, with the remainder being Chinese, Indian and other indigenous groups. The Sultanate has four districts: Brunei-Muara (which includes the capital Bandar Seri Begawan), Temburong, Tutong and Belait. ‘Darussalam’, the Arabic word for ‘Abode of Peace’ describes Brunei’s Islamic history that dates back some 1,500 years. Today, Brunei remains the world’s only Malay Islamic Monarchy with an unbroken royal lineage that has ruled the nation for the past 600 years.
