GOLDEN JUBILEE A JOYOUS CELEBRATION A
The Golden Jubilee of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam on 5 October, 2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the accession of His Majesty to the throne of Brunei Darussalam. Words JACQUELINE WONG
The Golden Jubilee celebration is set to become a momentous occasion in the glorious history of His Majesty’s reign. It will be marked with popular activities in the month of October, along with a host of special events throughout the year that will see the involvement of all sections of the rakyat and residents of Brunei Darussalam. Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ’Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien was the 28th Sultan of Brunei who ruled from 4 June, 1950 until his voluntary abdication on 4 October, 1967. The announcement read: “It is with clear and honest intention and without any dispute or ill feeling that I, Sir Omar ’Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, announce to my fellow Bruneians that it is my sincere wish to willingly abdicate the throne on 4 October, 1967. The decision is final and shall not be retracted. Therefore, I wish to assure the Brunei people that I have come to this decision of my own free will.” At the age of 21, the young military officer, Pengiran Muda Hassanal Bolkiah, discovered that the mantle of the kingship had been draped around him. The Crown Prince was installed as the 29th Ruler of Brunei in a short ceremony at Istana Darul Hana, witnessed by state dignitaries as well as members of the Legislative Council. The new Sultan took on the title His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan of Brunei Darussalam.
During the installation ceremony, His Majesty somberly promised: “... I as Sultan of Brunei Darussalam will try my utmost to carry out the policies of my father, and shall always uphold peace and prosperity, and strive to maintain the good name of Brunei Darussalam. And, with Allah, The All Pure and Most Exalted’s will, I shall also continue and always safeguard and maintain in earnest the efforts to uphold the true image of Islam and the customs and traditions of Brunei.” Even by today’s royal standards, the pomp and pageantry of the 1968 Royal Coronation Ceremony remained as one of the most magnificent ceremonies ever to be witnessed in the region. As a symbolic show of convergence, the ceremony to install the new young monarch combined ancient customs and traditions befitting the 600-year-old unbroken royal lineage of Brunei’s oldest Malay monarchy. As with Brunei’s fifth ruler, Sultan Bolkiah (1485-1524), who ruled over what was considered by all to be Brunei’s Golden Age, His Majesty’s astute rule had brought about the reinstatement of the Legislative Council Assembly on 11 December 1967, enabling the nation’s budget to be ratified with continuous progression on the National Development Plans with good governance. His Majesty continues to remind his rakyat of Brunei’s extraordinary and unique cultural legacy, embedded in its national philosophy of Malay Islamic Monarchy (Melayu Islam Beraja), officially proclaimed on the day Brunei
regained its sovereignty on 1 January, 1984. This has made Brunei an exceptional nation that has maintained its identity, culture and customs. The move has also ensured prosperity, and hope was brought to the nation, that their 29th Ruler will steer them towards greatness and success. The installation ceremony, in short, created an occasion for all to unite and celebrate as they look forward to His Majesty’s reign who promised to be a wise sovereign attentive to maintaining the tranquility and wellbeing of his rakyat and the country. As a young sultan who made a promise, realised his own potential and took to his role with prudence and benevolence to become a highly effective leader, His Majesty had kept to his word in his role to develop and maintain Brunei Darussalam’s peace and prosperity. Long Live Your Majesty! Issue of an exclusive commemorative souvenir A limited edition stamp set will be released by Pos Brunei in celebration of His Majesty’s Golden Jubilee on 5 October, 2017. JUBLI EMAS DIRAIKAN Sambutan Jubli Emas pada 5 Oktober, 2017 menandakan ulang tahun ke-50 KDYMM Paduka Seri Baginda Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan dan Yang Di-Pertuan Negara Brunei Darussalam menaiki takhta dengan penuh bersejarah pada 4 Oktober, 1967. Teks JACQUELINE WONG
> ELEPHANT HOUSE CAFE Although JK Rowling admitted Harry Potter was conceived on a train journey, two Edinburgh cafes are also closely associated with the birth of the boy wizard. The Elephant House Cafe, a snug little place near Edinburgh’s George IV bridge, was where Rowling would sit in the backroom writing, with the beautiful views of Edinburgh Castle. The cafe has since become known as the ‘Birthplace of Harry Potter’.

Nicholson Cafe is the other Edinburgh institution where Rowling did her writing. Though Nicholson’s has since changed hands and is Spoon Cafe today, a JK Rowling plaque sits outside the building confirming that Rowling wrote some of the early chapters of Harry Potter in the rooms on the first floor.
> GREYFRIARS KIRKYARD Sitting just metres away from the Elephant House, and deep inside Edinburgh’s historical old town, is Greyfriars Kirkyard – a churchyard with atmospheric gravestones where visitors can see some very famous names. Rowling took breaks from her writing in this graveyard and may have taken inspiration for many of the characters from names carved on the tombstones here. One such name happens to be Thomas Riddell Esquire who lent his name to Tom Marvolo Riddle. Fans will remember him as the boy who would later adopt the evil alter-ego, Voldemort. Other familiar names can also be spotted in the cemetery, such as William McGonagall and Elizabeth Moodie, who may have inspired Rowling’s characters, Professor McGonagall and Mad-Eye Moody.

> GEORGE HERIOT’S SCHOOL The imposing castle-like front wall of George Heriot’s School – with its four turrets and four corner courtyard – has obvious architectural similarities to the wizarding school of Hogwarts. Heriot’s also has four houses which pupils belong to, and it’s likely that Lauriston, Greyfriars, Raeburn and Castle partially inspired Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw.
> VICTORIA STREET Victoria Street is believed to be the place Rowling took inspiration for Diagon Alley. Not far from The Elephant Cafe, the winding cobbled road creates a magic of its own. With its historic architecture, elegant curve and colourful shop fronts, the street is one of the city’s most picturesque locations. Victoria Street even had a Royal Bank of Scotland and a stationery shop in approximately the same position as their magical counterparts, Gringotts and Flourish & Blott’s.
> BALMORAL HOTEL This amazing and luxurious 5-star hotel was where Rowling checked in to write her last book, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows. Despite living in Edinburgh, Rowling sought sanctuary in Room 552 to complete the series. In 2008, the hotel received permission from the author to rename the room to The Rowling Suite. The 180 sqft room still has the writing desk used by the author, as well as the marble bust of Hermes on which she had scribbled in black marker: “JK Rowling finished writing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in this room (552) on 11th Jan 2007.” The only other change made to the room by the hotel is putting a brass plaque at the front of the door and replacing the original door knocker with a brass owl in homage to the author. A night will cost around £1,000, but visitors will no doubt find inspiration from this iconinc landmark hotel just like Rowling as she ended the series in spectacular fashion. 20

Glen Coe was used as the location of Hogwarts, with extensive scenes from The Philosophers Stone, The Goblet of Fire, Prison of Azkaban, The Half Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows Parts 1&2. Visitors flock to the beautiful valley every year to see the location that brought Hogwarts to life on the big screen. You can also see Torren Lochan, the location of Hagrid’s hut.

As far as Korean dramas are concerned, the recent tvN drama the Goblin, can be considered the most successful of the genre. Since its debut, it has captivated viewers not just through its engaging plot, but also its star-studded cast that included Gong Yoo, Lee Dong Wook, Yoo Inna and Kim Go Eun, to name a few. When the series aired its third last episode before the series finale earlier this year, more than 1.9 million viewers across South Korea tuned in, making this one of TVs most popular series with high popularity ratings. But that was in February. If the producers think the Goblin phenomena would end with the finale, boy, were they wrong. Thanks to the series’ many scenic locations filmed not just in Seoul but around South Korea, the Goblin has made the lands in the republic stars overnight with fans eager to visit and recreate their own magical Korea. Even the national tourism body, Korea Tourism Organization, has jumped onto the bandwagon, creating a special booklet, A Journey With The Goblin, that lists all the film’s locales. From the city’s back lanes to the highland’s sheep ranch and going beyond to the
venue for the 2018 Winter Olympics, the itinerary allows fans to witness the Goblin’s most memorable moments and iconic settings. But beyond the stunning locations, each and every distinctive place detailed in the booklet also allows visitors an intimate look into the country’s many attractions, bringing Korea’s unique culture and traditions alive like never before. The Hanmi bookstore, with its distinctive canary yellow and instragrammableworthy storefront, will be familiar to many fans. What fans will also discover is that the neighbourhood, known as the Baedari Used Bookstore Alley, that once thrived in the 1950s almost came into oblivion in the last decade under pressure from development. But thanks to the villagers and artisans coming together, the alley and the surrounding area have been gentrified in recent years with a Baedari Cultural Festival to boot. The bookstores may no longer serve students and scholars for whom they were set up during the Korean War, but every bookstore will elicit nostalgia, regardless of whether you’re a booklover or otherwise. Walk into any antiquarian shop and you’ll be transported to a distant land through its wistful interiors.

In Pyeongchang where the Goblin was filmed at the Daegwallyeong Samyang Ranch and Woljeongsa Temple Fir Forest Path, among others, visitors to the area can also witness the preparations underway for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games. A rural county a few hours’ drive east of Seoul, Pyeongchang residents are truly proud of their third-time-lucky winning bid for the Olympics. The area has long been a favourite training ground for professional marathoners and skiers who take advantage of its 800-metreabove-sea-level altitude serving fresh mountain air and ample seasonal snow. The DMZ, just under 65 kilometeres away, makes for an interesting conversation for visitors but, if that’s a bit too unnerving, then there is always the zen-like Fir Forest Path to calm the senses. Also in PyeongChang, Joeng Gang Wong, the Institute of Traditional Korean Cuisine, is a notable place worthy of exploring. Set up with the purpose of researching and preserving Korea’s food culture, the institute has managed to avoid the
trappings of being a tacky visitor centre with its dedication to maintaining age-old traditions. The grounds house different buildings that include a culinary hideaway where visitors can have a hands-on experience cutting rice cakes and mixing bibimbap. In one dedicated area, jars containing cooking sauces and pastes processed on site in onggis (Korean earthenware) can be seen arranged neatly in rows. Onggis are used to store and ferment gochujang (chilli paste) and doenjang (fermented soybean paste). Back in Seoul, the traditional Bukchon Hanok Village becomes the starting point for Goblin fans in search of the various quaint little alleys that made it to the film. There’s the Seoul Jungang High School, the Yoon Boseon-gil (stonewall street) and the back alley of Jeongdok Library, all accessible on foot from Anguk Station. In one alley, local resident Jinny Kim walked thoughtfully towards an artisan coffeehouse, the Coffee Mill. This creative space, run by artisanal roaster,

You’d be hard-pressed to find this on the tourist map but that changed after the Goblin,” Jinny says shaking her head, laughing. But perhaps there still is a silver lining amid the crowd that throngs the place, bringing with them their animated chatter and keen shutter clicks. Exclusive to Melbourne, this exhibition is a collaboration between the NGV and the House of Dior and includes a sumptuous display of more than 140 garments designed by Christian Dior Couture between 1947 and 2017. The House of Dior explores the story of the fashion house through a series of themes, featuring works by the seven designers who have played key roles in shaping Dior’s renowned fashionable silhouette: Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferré, John Galliano, Raf Simons and Maria Grazia Chiuri. The exhibition narrates the rich history of the fashion house, including Christian Dior’s early influences, the design codes synonymous with the House of Dior, insights into the Dior atelier workrooms, the role that accessories have played in expressing the complete Dior look and the milestones of its six successive designers following Christian Dior’s sudden death in 1957. Audiences will discover some of the most significant couture designs of the 20th and 21st centuries as the exhibition celebrates Dior’s most landmark moments and designs, including their iconic ‘New Look’ silhouette, which revolutionised women’s fashion in the 1950s, through to the present-day contemporary aesthetic.

In 1938 Dior was hired as design assistant for Robert Piguet and, after his war service, in 1941 went to work for the fashion house Lucien Lelong as a junior designer, where he remained for the next five years. Dior opened his couture house, Christian Dior, on 16 December 1946 with a staff of sixty at 30 Avenue Montaigne, Paris. Launching his first Spring–Summer collection the following year, on 12 February 1947, Dior introduced a new post-war silhouette comprised of rounded shoulders, boned bodices, padded hips and full skirts made with an abundance of fabric that reaffirmed ideals of femininity and luxury in fashion. Over the next decade Dior continued to recalibrate French couture with his twice-yearly collections of new lines and his designs were frequently worn by film stars, aristocrats and Royalty. Up until his death of a heart attack in October 1957 at the age of 52, Dior drove what is considered the international renaissance of French couture.

LIFESTYLE MOTORING
VINTAGE Odyssey Rolls Royce Sweptail is a bespoke, vintage-inspired beauty for the modern times. The Sweptail, unveiled at the Concorso d’Eleganza at Villa d’Este car event in Lake Como, was commissioned by a private client, who came to the company with an idea for a one-off car inspired by RollsRoyces from the 1920s. “Sweptail is the automotive equivalent of Haute Couture,” comments Giles Taylor, Director of Design at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. “It is a Rolls-Royce designed and hand-tailored to fit a specific customer. This customer came to the House of Rolls-Royce with an idea, shared in the creative process where we advised him on his cloth, and then we tailored that cloth to him. You might say we cut the cloth for the suit of clothes that he will be judged by.”
Inspired by the beautiful coachbuilt Rolls-Royces of the 1920s and 1930s, the customer’s desire was for a coachbuilt two seater coupé featuring a large panoramic glass roof. As a connoisseur of Rolls-Royces, he was inspired by many of his favourite cars from the early 20th century, as well as many classic and modern yachts. Over the course of a number of years, Taylor and his team of designers engaged with the client in a wonderfully intellectual journey as they worked together to realise the customer’s distinct vision and bring it to life. The result of this one-off coachbuild project is the completely unique Rolls-Royce ‘Sweptail’. The two-seater coupé features a large panoramic glass roof, offering expansive views of the surrounding landscape, as well as details inspired by classic and modern yachts. Its bodywork is designed to look seamless, with the underside of the car sweeping upwards at its rear – creating a rounded “tail” that gives the Sweptail its name.
Rolls-Royce’s iconic grille has also been included in the design in a milled aluminium, with the company claiming it to be the “largest grille of any modern-era Rolls”. Inside, polished Macassar Ebony and open-pore Paldao adorn the interior, creating visual and tactile contrasts for the owner, both classical and contemporary. It is set off by contrasting light Moccasin and Dark Spice leathers that adorn the seats, armrests and dashboard top. The analog clock in the dash uses machined titanium. True to the spirit of a transcontinental GT that Rolls-Royce established in the 20s and 30s, in place of the rear seats is a vast expanse of wood creating a midshelf with an illuminated glass lip. Sitting under the rear opening backlight through which it can be accessed, the hat shelf is in itself a thing of beauty, highly polished and inset with luggage rails. Concealed in the outboard walls on either side of the motor car, behind the opening of the coach doors, are two identical panniers which contain two handmade attaché cases deployed at the touch of a button. These attaché cases are twinned with the full set of luggage also developed by Rolls-Royce Bespoke for ‘Sweptail’. A most personal, coachbuilt Rolls-Royce for a specific customer, every aspect of the material treatment of ‘Sweptail’ exudes handcrafted quality and exacting attention to detail. In short, it is a RollsRoyce – but like no other before.

STREET SMART
How did the idea if the book come about? Since our Hiang Yap Group IPO in 1997, I’ve been invited to speak at many forums with the youths to share my experiences and business knowledge. I absolutely enjoyed that. Most of my presentation was done in powerpoint. Then came the opportunity to consolidate all my thoughts and knowledge into a volume. I finally got the time to sit down to actually write a book, and it took me about four and a half years to put this together.
The problem nowadays is that youths are so impatient. After graduation, they think they have enough business experience to hit the road. Unfortunately that’s not the case. Most fail because they lack practical wisdom to sail through the business landscape. Today’s business battleground is very merciless and extremely hostile. There is no room for trial and error. You need to fight off your competition all the time with no time to correct your mistakes.
from the top markets, opportunities and community pressure where you must excel. You really have to choose the right “habitat” to ensure success.
As for the title, I chose the word “Street Wisdom” from an urban context. It refers to a person that, if you were to throw him into a sophisticated or complex urban setting like Manila, Bangkok or Karachi, they would have the street wisdom to be able to go into these environments to solve problems, prosper and succeed. If you’re not prepared with these sets of skills, the chance of survival is almost zero. Most young people go into business have little experience but they think they can go through it with common sense and logic. It doesn’t work that way.
Where did you get inspiration for most of the writing? Inspiration came from my life philosophy. After selling my business, and at this stage in my life, I am not so motivated by financial gains anymore. Like I said earlier, I wanted to give back to the community.
Can street smart skills be learnt or are they innate? They definitely can be learnt, but it must be given time. The more we are exposed to various environments, the smarter we get in our ability to counter problems and at the same time grab all the opportunities that come our way. As I’ve said before, we need both theoretical knowledge and practical exposure to enable us to sail through very complicated settings.
When did you decide this book was a timely publication? I wanted to use my knowledge sharing as a form of giving back to the community. Basically, throughout my 20 years in business, I’ve seen many start-ups done in a hurry by young people. The success rate for new start-ups was less than 1-2% after five years. Most fail in the first year. I realised that in order to succeed, you needed two types of knowledge: theory from business school and practical wisdom. Yet, very little has been written on business wisdom.

I believe the global market economies of the business world have contributed significantly towards bringing the world out of poverty. The richer and more diverse the business community, the more governments can afford to provide for the population. I see my role as enriching the business environment further so that more can be done by the government to benefit the people. What are some of your favourite chapters from the book? I really like the first three chapters that have to do with how to start off a business successfully and also the last chapter. Then there’s “Sons of the Village” which talks about how if you want to be successful you must look at the environment. You learn very quickly
The last chapter talks about reviewing and examining yourself. For instance, if you are an introvert, you won’t enjoy interacting with people, so business is not for you. Business is networking; it’s about people and getting all your staff behind you.
What were your own lessons you have learnt from writing this publication? I have learnt to actually be more patient. I managed to consolidate a lot of concepts and ideas into the book and that was a challenge to myself. Some ideas are rough feelings about certain situations. To put thoughts onto paper, you really have to refine your thought processes and be more focused. And this also taught me discipline, and that I cannot expect other people to know what I want except to do the writing myself. Mr Khoo was in Brunei to share his experience and valuable insights with students aspiring to be entrepreneurs at the Chung Hwa Middle School, International School Brunei and St Andrews School.
Entrepreneur-turnedauthor, Howard Khoo, speaks about skills beyond the classroom that can make or break a business.

WELCOME ONBOARD
CAPITAL ATTRACTIONS
ABODE OF PEACE
Small in size but big in attractions, Brunei’s capital has lots to offer.
Brunei Darussalam is a country rich in culture and heritage. It is a small, peaceful, prosperous kingdom on the northern shore of the ecologically-rich island of Borneo. Come and discover Brunei, a Kingdom of Unexpected Treasures. Brunei is arguably best known today as an oil producing country. The nation became independent in 1984 and, thanks to its large reserves of oil and gas, now has one of the highest standards of living in the world. Its population of just over 408,000 is made up of two-thirds ethnic Malay, with the remainder being Chinese, Indian and other indigenous groups. The Sultanate has four districts: Brunei-Muara (which includes the capital Bandar Seri Begawan), Temburong, Tutong and Belait. ‘Darussalam’, the Arabic word for ‘Abode of Peace’ describes Brunei’s Islamic history that dates back some 1,500 years. Today, Brunei remains the world’s only Malay Islamic Monarchy with an unbroken royal lineage that has ruled the nation for the past 600 years.

THE LAST WORD EROTIC STORIES FOR PUNJABI WIDOWS Balli Kaur Jaswal A lively, sexy, and thought-provoking East-meets-West story about community, friendship, and women’s lives at all ages – a spicy and alluring mix of Together Tea and Calendar Girls. It tells the story of Niki and her creative writing class students – proper Sikh widows – and how each creativity is unleashed.
