PURFOODS ANKENY, IOWA 2

Design the new corporate office for Purfoods, a meal producer and distributor located in a suburb of Des Moines, Iowa. The concept focuses on an open and versatile layout with an organic flow, much like a living breathing organism. By concentrating on innovative public spaces with opportunities for chance interaction, the design embodies the casual fun philosophy which is so central to Purfoods’ operations. The project is done in collaboration with Herman Miller and Pigott, Inc, as well as teammates Erica Riha, Amanda Berkes and Kim Haberl.

Design an assisted living and memory care facility in the booming city of Panama City, Panama. The asymmetrical complex emphasizes community, natural light and nature. Designing to allow the natural surroundings to freely infiltrate the facility through operable windows and breezeways provides both residents and staff with a comfortable space. Amenities provided at the facility include: a large open courtyard, roof garden, craft and woodshop spaces, multipurpose community spaces, a theater/chapel, public cafÊ, salon, spa, physical therapy spaces and IT services. All spaces meet ADA requirements, and all furnishings are durable and specifically designed for healthcare. Efficiency is of the utmost importance as well as maintaining the residents’ independence that they have enjoyed for years. The project is done in collaboration with Heather Bednar and published in a student newspaper.

Design a small kitchen in New York City full of creative storage solutions. A new island increases countertop space and creates a second work triangle. One has a primary sink outfitted with a garbage disposal unit and cooktop, while the other has a prep sink that doubles as an ice bucket/wet bar during parties. Two high performance dishwasher drawers tuck under the the primary sink counter, and freezer and refrigerator drawers stack under the island. A stacked convection microwave and wall oven complete the appliance array. LED strip lights and pendant fixtures illuminate key work surfaces. A fitted table folds flat and files into a slot behind the wall cabinet to clear the archway to the living room. Two Robo chairs fold and hang on the wall as functional art. A slim bi-fold door replaces the clunky pantry door. The cabinets have notched handles to save money on hardware and sustainable wood finishes match the existing casework. The completed design was submitted to the “Jim’s Kitchen” Architizer competition.

Design a condo at 15 Central Park West, New York City. The clients include a husband and wife, as well as a mother-in-law recovering from cancer. The space must also accommodate visits from children and grandchildren. All materials and finishes are VOC-free, and furnishings are comfortably sized with the elderly mother-in-law in mind. The design includes a staff entrance and sleeping quarters which doubles as a guest room when not in use. All furniture arrangements emphasize the incredible view of Central Park, bringing nature into the urban setting. Stylistically, the design is a mix of the clients’ contemporary (furnishings) and traditional (materials) tastes. The project is done in collaboration with Kelly Nelson.

The client is a single female who is a highly allergic asthmatic and entusiastic about yoga. All materials are hypo-allergenic, and the furnishings reflect her eclectic style. The design includes custom shelving units to act as dividers within the small apartment. The space has a soft contemporary feel while preserving the integrity of the historic building.

RETAIL

WEST ELM, ROME, ITALY

31

Design the first West Elm store outside of the U.S. in Rome, Italy. The concept is based on West Elm’s existing aesthetic, as well as the idea of ‘weaving’ the American brand with Italian culture. The finished design implements natural materials which are both sustainable and native to the region. Our proposal successfully integrates West Elm’s contemporary merchandise into Rome’s historic setting, all the while preserving the historic integrity of the existing building. The project is done in collaboration with team members Hang Chen and Bethany Zobeck, located both in Iowa and Rome. In the summer of 2012, the project was selected for submission to the Donghia Scholarship Competition.
