Career Interests: My main interest is in human health and wellness. I believe that the built environment, when thoughtfully designed, can enhance wellness through the use of sustainable design practices. My goal is to discover new ways of intentionally incorporating biophilic design principles into architecture. My goal is to become a registered architect and I have begun my NCARB records.

Personal Interests: I participate in the Columbus Symphony Orchestra playing oboe and volunteer with 317 Performing Arts (a youth non-profit in Indianapolis) as a marimba instructor in my free time. I help East Central High School with their after school percussion activities and teach private lessons. I am passionate about personal fitness and participate in the Cincinnati Tradition Drum and Bugle Corps Colorguard.

URBAN JUSTICE CENTER A WELL DESIGN PROJECT

ARCHITECTURAL STUDIO 7 SPRING 2021 Instructor: Etien Santiago Independent Study Advisor: Daniel Martinez Site: 489 Canal Street, New York, NY Program: Lobby, Administrative Offices, Cowork Startup Incubator Space, Event Space, Multipurpose Rooms Area: ~15,000 SF

DESIGN DETAILS As a newly certified WELL AP, I decided to use my newfound knowledge of the WELL Building Certification and apply it to my final architectural studio project as part of my final independent study. I worked closely with two professors to create an office space for the Urban Justice Center, a pro-bono law firm in NYC that serves underrepresented clients with social justice cases, that would allow them to host events, incubate social justice nonprofit start ups, and meet with potential clients. As their clientele is not accustomed to meeting with lawyers and may feel intimidated, I wanted to create an inviting space that would generate a hopeful feeling in those who seek help from the UJC. With a site adjacent to one of the busiest intersections in the city, the Holland Tunnel, I created a garden oasis not only on the ground level but vertically throughout the project.

WELL CONCEPTS

Prior to beginning this studio project, our class did a combined research project on the history of Canal Street. I learned there was a rich ecological history I wanted to celebrate in my project. I compared the WELL Concepts with the Urban Justice Center’s Mission along with my research and decided that the most important concepts for this project would be Community and Movement (UJC Mission), Light and Water (ecological research).

BATTLE OF THE AIR NYMPHS A CHESS SET

FABRICATION AND DESIGN SPRING 2019 Instructor: Marleen Newman Materials: Wood, Wire Mesh, 3D Extruded Plastic, Ceramic Tiles, Living Moss, and Air Plants

18

19

DESIGN DETAILS I chose a design that would be actually living, incorporating air plants and moss. Air plants and moss do not have true roots, so they can be cared for by misting with water. For the squares, I used 1” ceramic tiles to make 3” squares for each space on the board. I removed a few of the tiles here and there to make room to incorporate the moss in between. Each piece was designed in Rhino, and the initial concept drawings were all based off of Celtic knot designs. The size hierarchy of chess was followed, with the king being the tallest piece at 4” tall, the queen at 3.5” tall, , bishops, rooks, and knights at 3” tall, and the pawns at 2” tall. The second row pieces bases are 1.5” in diameter and the pawns are 1” in diameter.

Caves and waterfalls are a vibrant part of the landscape surrounding Madison, IN and my design celebrates these natural features. The interior circulation was designed to imitate the narrowing and expanding of cavern passages. REPUBLIC GRANT PROPOSAL

POST-LIGHTING SEMINAR GROUP COLLABORATION SUMMER 2020 Instructor: Daniel Martinez Site: 333 2nd St., Columbus, IN Materials: LED Light Strips, Arduino Microcontrollers

26

27

DESIGN DETAILS A group of students from the Lighting Design course submitted and secured a grant during the summer of 2020. Our proposal was for an interactive lighting design to be installed on the Republic, our school. Using the regular steel columns for inspiration, we created a visual connection between the architecural studio and the art studio that visitors could use to interact with each other in a safe, socially distanced manner.

ARDUINO DIAGRAMS The Arduino system is programmed to send a line of light when one of the visual sensors is triggered by a visitor.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING FOR THRIVE ALLIANCE GROUP PROJECT ENERGY AND SYSTEMS 2 FALL 2019 Instructor: Bill Brown Site: Columbus, IN Program: 3-4 Bedrooms, 2+ Bathrooms, Kitchen, Living Room Area: ~800-1200 SF

DESIGN DETAILS

TWO STORY VERSION A

Thrive Alliance is a Columbus nonprofit that provides housing, social, and caregiving services. We were challenged to come up with an efficent, affordable, and net-zero ready design that could be used on mutliple vacant lots throughout the city. Housing is built by volunteers, so it must be easy to assemble. Some of the clients cannot use stairs, so it was also important to create floor plans that could accomodate mobility devices with a bedroom on the ground level. Each portion of the floor plan is a 12’ by 12’ square, and they are all interchangeable. Plumbing and utilities are stacked and all reside in the same square.

SUSTAINABILITY FEATURES

WATER COLLECTION SYSTEM

Our priorities on sustainablity were water, power, and the ability to grow food. Columbus occasionally deals with catastrophic flooding, so permeable landscaping and trees are important factors in keeping water from the drainage systems. Having water on-hand in a cistern could potentially be a huge asset in the years to come, and we have designed a funnel system in the roof to collect the water. Solar power works wonderfully in this area, and is included on the roof.

Native trees provide shade, reduce power usage, and capture stormwater Clover lawns don’t require fertilizer and need little to no mowing Solar panels generate electricity during the daylight hours Water funnel collects rainwater for cistern storage

Porous driveway can be made with permeable concrete, gravel, or pavers

PASTORALE AT THE CITY EDGE

LOW-INCOME HOUSING AND AFFORDABLE CHILDCARE FACILITY

ARCHITECTURAL STUDIO 5 SPRING 2020 Instructor: Jei Kim Site: Sycamore and 2nd, Columbus, IN Program: Five Infant- 5 year old daycare classrooms, Playgrounds, Indoor Activity Center, 14 Apartment Units Area: ~20,000 SF

DESIGN DETAILS Quality low income housing is nearly impossible to find near the downtown area of Columbus, in particular housing that would be suitable for family use. Additionally, there are few options for childcare nearby. This project addresses both of these needs. Since my site is on the edge of the city, and the southern edge is near a flood plain, I blended this project into the rural condition on the south and the urban condition on the north by creating a slope with the roofscape. The exterior evolkes a childlike interpretation of barns merging into one another and growing as they reach the city, with distressed wood siding painted in bright colors. The vacant lot next to the east of the site would make a lovely community garden for the downtown residents to use.

VISUAL STUDIO HIGHLIGHTS The visual art studio that runs in parallel with architectural studio is a unique fixture of the J. Irwin Miller architecture program. I am grateful for the insight into visual information and intuition I have gained from this study. My first experience with oil painting was in this course, and I am sure it will remain a lifelong pursuit.
