The month of April marks the beginning of a new financial year and the Commission will continue to host workshops virtually, as we collaborate with federations, associations, track clubs and professional groups to educate athletes and support personnel. In this edition of the True Spirit newsletter we will tell you more about JADCO’s efforts to complete the distribution of Samsung tablets to student athletes who participated in the 2020 series of the Junior Athletes Anti-Doping Education Workshops. We will also provide you with an update on the 2021 Virtual JADCO School Tour and nutrition tips to stay healthy during the pandemic.

STUDENT ATHLETES RECEIVE 170 SAMSUNG TABLETS

During January and February 2021 the Commission presented 75 Samsung tablets to Foga Road High School, Ocho Rios High School, Holland High School and Montego Bay High School during handover ceremonies held at the institutions. These ceremonies successfully completed the distribution of Samsung tablets to student athletes who participated in the 2020 series of the Junior Athletes Anti-Doping Education Workshops.
The distribution of the devices began on January 6, 2021 when 95 Samsung tablets were presented to Guy’s Hill High School, Ensom City Primary School and Eltham Park Primary School at the handover ceremony of Samsung tablets which was held at the JADCO office. Guy’s Hill High School was presented with 25 Samsung tablets for having the most participants online at the seventh annual Junior Athletes Anti-Doping Education Workshop for region one. Ensom City Primary and Eltham Park Primary Schools received 35 Samsung devices each, as part of the Commission’s outreach activities. In total, the Commission distributed 170 Samsung tablets to student athletes. This initiative will aid in the facilitation of online learning and the promotion of anti-doping education in schools.
On Thursday, January 21, 2021 the Commission awarded Foga Road High School with 25 Samsung tablet devices for having the most participants online for region two which consists of schools within the parishes of Clarendon, Manchester and St. Elizabeth. The Commission also used the opportunity to make courtesy calls to the schools within the region that participated in the 2020 series of Junior Athletes Anti-Doping Education Workshops. These schools included May Day High School, Manchester High School and Winston Jones High School. These institutions were presented with JADCO branded memorabilia for their participation in the virtual workshop. On Wednesday, February 3, 2021 representatives of JADCO visited Ocho Rios High School and Holland High School and presented them with Samsung tablets for having the most participants online for their regions. Holland High School was awarded with 25 Samsung devices for region three which consists of schools within the parishes of Westmoreland, Hanover, St. James and sections of Trelawny. Ocho Rios High School was awarded with 12 Samsung tablets for region four which consists of schools within the parishes of St. Ann, St. Mary, Portland and sections of Trelawny.
Additionally, on Friday, February 12, 2021 Montego Bay High School was specially awarded with 13 Samsung devices for their participation in the workshop. Montego Bay High School joined the workshop scheduled for region four instead of the workshop held for region three where they are placed. The school was specially rewarded for their effort because they had 32 participants online. This was the second highest turn out from the schools during the 2020 series of workshops. Foga Road High School had the highest turn out for all the schools, as 53 participants from the institution joined the virtual workshop.
The Commission also made courtesy calls to most of the schools that participated in the 2020 Virtual Junior Athletes Anti-Doping Education Workshops and presented the participants with JADCO branded memorabilia.
The Commission hosted the Junior Athletes Anti-Doping Education Workshop virtually for the first time in November 2020. Over 300 junior athletes and their support personnel from four regions across the island attended the seventh annual Junior Athletes Anti-Doping Education Workshops. The workshop has been held annually since 2014.
