DIGITAL DESIGN + FABRICATION SM1, 2016 M1 JOURNAL - PANEL & FOLD - FAN JADE LAYTON

Measured Drawings

The measured elevation drawing of the fan has been captured as if the fan was closed on its side then opened up to its full capacity of 154° leaving an angle of 26°. The blade has a length of 215mm and the fan has a span of 430mm.

Two measured sections have been taken, the first displays the end blade and the second displays the regular blade. Both have a bottom half length of 95mm and a top half length of 120 mm. The unfolded skin plan has been measured by detaching the blades, placing the fabric down and looking at the skin from above.

Analysis

In order for the fan to unfold, force must be applied in opposite directions at each end blade. This allows the blades to be pulled apart and the fabric skin to unravel. The three step diagram below display this process.

Each individual blade is attached at the tapered end by a rivet that pierces all, allowing the fan to open and close in a pivotal motion. One creased piece of fabric also known as the skin is attached to the blades. While these blades act as a support, preventing the fan from losing it’s shape, the end blades keep of the inner elements of the fan protected.

Blades Creates a backbone to support the attached fabric and prevents the stucture from losing it’s shape.

Fabric (skin) The material that is attached to the blades and has creases that fold when blades are pushed together.

Rivet Circular piece of metal piercing all the blades, holding them together and allowing the fan to open and close.

End blade Keeps all elements of the fan including the fabric, and inner blade protected.

Sketch Model

Sketch Design #1 Collar / Fold / Shield / Zig-zag / Circular What is your idea? [Maximum 5 key words]

Form: This structure sits on the sholders of my model and consists of one flat donut shaped plane that has even vertical folds around the whole structure forcing it to go from one small point (around the neck) to a large circular area facing downwards. I was inspired by the original shape and function of a hand held fan.

How does this respond to your personal space? People (especially women) are often highly concerned and protective when it comes to the area around their face and chest. This structure that starts around the neck and rests on the sholders attempts to create a bubble around the top half of the body. This should restrict other people from crowding my personal space and keep a reasonable distance away.

Sketch Design #2 Wing / Defence / Triangular / Angles / Sharp What is your idea? [Maximum 5 key words]

Form: This structure consists of many triangular panels attached at slightly differing angles. These panels wrap around the arm, creating an abstract shield. I was initially inspired by the bionic arm of a superhero and the idea that it is used to deter others. How does this respond to your personal space? Our hands and arms are elements of my body that I am constantly using and other people are always coming into contact with. We have lots of control over our arms/hands and do not have to think twice when using this section of our body in self defence. This structure that shields the arm acts as protection and highlights to others to keep their distance.

PLAN

This structure consists of one large, flat cone folded horizontally in order to create the 5 sections of the structure. It is weighted at the bottom and when the model walks, the structure bouces up and down like a spring. How does this respond to your personal space? This structure is weighted more towards the bottom of a person. The wide brim of the skirt like structure, will deter people from entering within the external radius. With the structure being away from my face, torso and arms, although it does not focus on my priority areas, it is easy to wear and subty pushes others away to a reasonale distance.
