LEGACY (renderings of the new TDECU Stadium and the University Center, now opened)
Our History First founded in 1927, our school officially became the University of Houston in 1934. Two years later, the institution acquired the land for a permanent campus, and by 1939 opened its first building. Since then, UH has developed a series of deep-rooted traditions that continue to thrive today.
Our Traditions
16
Shasta
The Cougar Sign
Shasta is the official mascot of the Houston Cougars. Between 1947 and 1989, five live cougars served as mascots and lived on campus. Since 1989, the tradition has continued with a student-Shasta mascot (above) and Sasha, the female cougar mascot, both are best known for their traditional pushups performed after every football touchdown. In 2012, another live cougar, Shasta VI, was adopted in partnership with the Houston Zoo — making appearances during UH events via webcam from his home at the zoo, where he also blesses all of the UH class rings before graduation.
Made by folding the ring finger of the right hand toward the palm and covering it with the thumb, the Cougar Sign dates back to 1953, when Shasta I lost a toe in a cage door on her way to a game. The opposing team mocked UH by imitating the cougar’s injury. After a staggering victory against the same team a few years later, the Cougars adopted that gesture as a symbol of school pride.
Scarlet Red and Albino White The colors of Sam Houston’s ancestor, Sir Hugh, serve as UH’s official colors. The red stands for courage and inner strength to face the unknown, while the white stands for the good of helping one’s fellow man.
Homecoming Each year, students, faculty, staff and alumni pack TDECU Stadium and flow through the streets of campus for a weekend of football and festivities in celebration of the University of Houston’s Homecoming. At UH there also is a full week of activities preceding the actual Homecoming weekend, which includes pep rallies, Homecoming court announcements and concerts — not to mention the tailgating, the Homecoming parade and a live cougar on game day. uh.edu/homecoming
Frontier Fiesta Frontier Fiesta is an annual studentrun, student-led festival hosted by UH, featuring concerts, carnival booths, multicultural events and cook-offs. After its debut in 1940, LIFE magazine, a national publication, dubbed it “The Greatest College Show on Earth.” It still is. Come for the fun of it and support scholarship and community. uh.edu/fiesta
