101 Hudson Street

101 Hudson is an Art Deco-inspired icon at the Jersey City, New Jersey with un obstructed view of Manhattan. To integrate proposed design into existing fabric, timeless materials, such as wood, bronze, and concrete panel, have been used in similar language of chevron patterned exterior.

While a triple height main lobby with warm wood louver and fabric panel welcome tenants, a new library provides transition moment before going up to workplace with a comfortable banquet space. New circulation to elevator hallways will allow not only small gallery but also connection to local retail spaces.

Newport project is first residential elements to their larger master plan to redevelop the South Downtown area of Atlanta. The project consists of two residential buildings flanking Broad Street, a major thoroughfare slated for increased transit connection.

Each site has a mix of existing buildings and its design strategy seeks to maintain the contextual base and height of the existing and then float the two towers above that datum. The new facades take inspiration from the existing context and also play off of each other—as do their forms. Each residential tower takes on a canted bar shape, to take advantage of a simple double-loaded corridor design while providing views in all directions.

101 Franklin Street

101 Franklin Street was built for the future 70 years ago, and although the building is now in need of a major intervention to continue its initial promise, the rigorous and consistent structural grid still offers the opportunity to reimagine this building to be customizable for tenants in need of more creative environments and to provide flexibility for their future needs.

Terraces have been added at various levels, in coordination with the Client’s marketing team, to provide exterior amenity spaces that adds value to the tenant floor. Locations of terraces consider both the potential workplace configuration, views, and overall mass of the building.

The exterior enclosure concept is based on improving the quality of the office environment, increasing the visual connection between the interior and exterior, and strengthening the concept for the office plan by articulating the noble grid of the existing utilitarian structural frame. Large insulated glass units span between columns laterally and slab beams vertically to enhance the workplace by increasing the visual connection to the city skyline and neighborhood streetscape.

04 Southampton Hospital New Facility

The hospital building consists of four stories of new construction housing Diagnostic & Treatment Services and Clinical Support Services on Level 1; Public and Administrative Services Level 2; direct entrance from the Parking Garage to the Hospital on Level 1M; and Patient Care Units on Levels 3 and 4. The roof consists of exterior screened mechanical equipment.

Inpatient floors are arranged with setbacks of individual rooms which result in corner windows – with light and views from two directions – in each private space. The stepping of the building mass results in outdoor terraces at Level 2, offering opportunities for patients and their families as well as visitors and staff to experience outdoor space from the Hospital grounds.

03 Highway Behind the Pond Renovation

House Renovation

Project Manager

July 2019 - June 2021

The house, Highway behind the pond, was origianl designed by Rafael Vinoly and built in 1990-1992 for an elderly single woman with extensive art colleciton. Over the years the house changed owners several times. The clients purchased the house which used for their summer weekends and requested for the renovation in 2002 and in 2004 by RVA. The beach house contains over 15,000 sqaure feet on three levels, which terrace up with the local topography from the garage to the west through the master bedroom to the east.

In 2019, the clients had requested third renovation to reinforce a privacy for master suite from the adjacent living room. To be saparate visually and acoustically, white oak millwork wall has been installed but the continous reflective surface expands a infinity of curved roof.

36 Project

Located in the center of Sukhumvit Road, 36 Project is planned as the tallest tower in Bangkok, including underground automated parking, private garden, hotel and hotel residence.

The exoskeleton building structural system with “internal basket” not only provides a rigidity against high pressure of wind but also maximizes interior space usage. The operative vent wall behind columns allows natural ventilation for all occupied floors without any obstruction of views, while it keeps simplicity of the monolithic structure.

277 Fifth Avenue

This new condominium tower is located on the southeast corner of Fifth Avenue and East 30th Street in Manhattan, in the newly emerging residential neighborhood north of Madison Square Park known as NoMad.

The integration of the façade with the building structural system allows for column-free interiors that might obstruct views and compromise interior space usage. The building’s structural elements are enclosed in reinforced concrete panels tinted indigo, a palette and texture intended to acknowledge the character of the area’s historic landmark towers.

A series of double-height loggias appear to spiral down the building from the upper floors, creating “an interesting typology of open space and terracing.” These terraces bring variety to the exterior building appearance and provide covered outdoor space for select units.

The site is divided into a playground for children to play sports, a three buildings covered by a singular roof structure and protected and intimate courtyard in the created by the roof.

The building is designed to face the adjacent road so that the usability of all spaces can be easily recognized by all users who enter through the main entrance. Surrounding the courtyard, there is first massing housing 3 elementary classrooms, a multipurpose room and another massing housing a teacher’s office and toddler classroom and lastly small massing allocated to outdoor bathrooms. Interstitial spaces between buildings can be used as an outdoor classrooms.

On the elevations with openings, sliding sunscreens are installed to filter out the sunlight and excessive heat. The sunscreen is designed with bamboo and wood frame that are readily available in india, and integrated to the facade like a sliding wall.

The massing of the project was done based on the weather analysis, which mainly oriented southward to maximize solar irradiance and configured as compact masses to minimize heat losses. The massing largely consists of three intersecting volumes. Despite dynamic exterior massings, the interior houses an efficient layout where the main corridor with maintenance programs. Considering site’s harsh winter, the main entrance is tucked between the two massing’s facade acting as wind barriers with MEP access hidden visually from the main public space.

Mongolian Polystyrene Concrete Block (240x350x600mm), which provides a high insulation value, is normally not an ideal material for load-bearing wall system. A double-course typical red brick layer provides additional rigidity around openings. Light-gauge steel framing with sandwich panel infill system reduces the dead load of the entire roof.

52 LARGE BOAT WORKSHOP
Prof. Elizabeth Kamell

BOATWORK ASSOCIATION

BACKGROUND

Adjacent to Cayuga Lake, one of Finger Lakes in New York, Cayaga Wooden Boatworks has dedicated to revitalize the wooden boat culture. Now it would like to expand its buisiness to establish Cayuga Wooden Boatworks Assocication, which is an institution and commercial space to produce a boat reparing education program for students and an wooden boat exhibition for visitors. This institution will be located in the middle of the Beacon Bay Marina. The sectional difference between the lake and roads allows for an opportunity to integrate the existing context with new programs.

CONCEPT

This building is a metaphor of the boat. Modifying a repetitive primary structure system with a detached enclosure, this design can achieve the desired flexibility in space and the sustainble enclosure system. By exposing this distingtion, visitors acknowledge how the boat and this building are constructed in a similar language through exploring the space and the boat restoration process. Ultimately, this would produce a transitional moment from the ground into the water - the boat as an element to connect them.
