Personal Branding “Personal branding is a marketing
strategy focussed on your most important product: you. Developing a personal brand requires figuring out who you really are (your skills, values, passions and personality), who you want to serve (your target market or audience), and how you differ from the competition (your unique niche) Susan Chritton - Personal Branding for Dummies

Personal Branding & Social Media
Each site has different uses and benefits, however, there is no denying that your online profiles and the way you choose to ‘brand’ yourself will have an impact on your search for employment.
A great online profile will ensure that your are discoverable and found for the right terms; it paints a compelling portrait of yourself, makes you stand out from the competition and will improve your connectivity prospects.
A bad online profile could hinder your search for employment and once it’s out, it’s out there and your digital footprint will always contain it.

Building a Winning Profile on LinkedIn “Employers don't want to hire college kids; they want to recruit young professionals; and one of the best ways to show you're the latter, even when you're still green, is to build a professional presence on LinkedIn wrote Laura McMullen, Careers Editor at U.S. News.
23
Building a Winning Profile on LinkedIn Upload a Professional Photo
Write a Compelling Headline
• Use a headshot in professional attire (at least appropriate to the audience you’re aiming).
• Use the 120 characters at your disposal wisely; a good template is “what you’re doing now” plus “what you hope to do”.
• You’re 14 times more likely to be viewed with a photo – don’t leave it blank or use a logo, distant shot or bad quality photo, it will turn potential connections off.
• Make sure it grabs attention as this is often the first thing potential recruiters or hiring managers will see.
List your Work Experience • Ensure you detail the work experience you have, however minimal it may seem.
• Part time jobs, internships, projects you’ve worked on or community groups you’ve been involved in can all be detailed here. Statistics show that 40% of Hiring Managers using LinkedIn consider voluntary work as work experience. • Be confident in highlighting what you’ve achieved and sell yourself here - adding presentations, links, videos or documents here will massively increase views and connectability.
Add skills • You can add a max. of 50 skills; and don’t forget to ask for endorsements on them.
Contact details • Make sure you add them! And give multiple options to ensure it’s easy for people to get in touch with you. • Think about your brand – keep your email address sensible and think about the image you want to present.
Summary • This is your opportunity to tell your story – It’s not a CV so inject some personality and give people a reason to connect with you; make them want to find out more through speaking about your motivations, skills and aspirations in a genuine, authentic voice.
Detail your Education • Sounds obvious as it’s what you’ve been doing most recently but it really is a fantastic space to detail your achievements; it sits by your profile picture so it’s incredibly visible. • Again, you can upload documents, links and presentations and detail societies or activities you’ve been involved in. • Completing the Education section will give you 10 times more profile views.

Making an Impact on LinkedIn Now you’ve got this great profile set up it’s time to make it work CONTINUALLY UPDATE YOUR PROFILE
REQUEST RECOMMENDATIONS
As you’re gaining new skills and experience update LinkedIn.
Ask peers, mentors, managers or lecturers for recommendations.
Your connections will receive alerts and you’ll remain in their line of vision.
It can be a little embarrassing to approach but give some guidance as to what you’d like them to comment on and they’ll be happy to help.
for you!
JOIN RELEVANT GROUPS
PUBLISH STATUS UPDATES AND POSTS
You can join up to 100 groups that relate to your chosen career path or of interest to you.
Curate articles you find of interest and share them with a thought provoking comment to generate discussion.
You’ll have access to key professionals within their industries so not only will you be able to learn from what they’re writing but you’ll also be able to engage in group discussion, proffer opinion and ensure you’re visible in influential circles.*
Once you’re feeling more confident, start to publish your own posts – again you’re aiming to remain in the forefront of potential employer’s minds for all the right reasons.
