wenty-five-year-old store manager Jason DeCarlo is a huge Mazda and rotor fan. His 1973 RX-3 is classic in many ways but incorporates his own unique flair for one of the most interesting twists on the model we’ve seen in a while. “I’ve always loved the look and style of the RX-3s,” Jason told us. “I wanted this one to be able to be driven to shows, do weddings and taken to the track when needs be.” It had to be an all-rounder able to do most everything while remaining rocksolid in the reliability stakes. The last thing a bride wants is to be left stranded on the side on the road on her wedding day, after all. Jason’s owned the Mazda now for four years, getting into the build right away and calling on all the right names to get it finished. He’s owned a Series II RX-7, R33 Skyline, S13 Silvia and BMW 323ci in the past, but the RX-3 was always the dream. No longer.

The extended shifter is a nice touch, but a re-trim is due in soon
Jason tells us what he’s spent on the car is “unknown,” or perhaps he simply doesn’t want to think about it. Whatever the cost, it’s been well worth it, the final finish nothing short of perfection. “I love the attention to detail, the way it sits and the engine bay. I love the interest you get from older people. They appreciate it more. I also like the fact cops see a nice car and tend to leave it alone.” Jason says the car was a horrible green colour when he picked it up. The actual condition of the thing was okay, but it’s looking better than ever thanks to a custom Debeers respray by a friend. Note too the flat firewall, hidden wiring and smoothed engine bay all adding to the effect. It’s an extensive build. Garage48 has been behind a large amount of the fabrication work in the bay. With the flat firewall and hidden wiring, it’s a real work of art, those individual trumpets sounding just as good as they look with the bridgeport on board and the rat-a-tat pumping out the rear end via the custom, lobster-tail exhaust. You can’t drag your eyes away from it during inspection. From here Jason’s going straight into the wedding game and hitting as many shows as possible, photoshoots, etc. the life of a star. “I just want to drive it and appreciate all the hard work and late nights, plus taking it out with the boys.” 14 >fastfours&rotaries

What’s in store? Jason says new trim is coming up next. That will be followed by mini-tubs in the rear and nitrous-oxide for the strip. One thing’s for sure: No bride’s going to be late in this thing. Thanks: “Gavin at Garage48 fir the amazing fab work and help, Race Only for the killer tune and amazing wiring, Scotty at Unique Customs for helping us with the car, Frank at A&B Motorsports for the coil-overs, Daniel, Jack and all the others that helped, thank you, Shant and Troy at Quantum Auto Body Repairs for the detail 18 >fastfours&rotaries

f Jason Voorhees had a chariot of choice, this would be it. ‘Chainsaw’, as it is known, is a legend out in the Australian rotor and drag scene. It’s been a bit of a bumpy road for the old girl but persistence has paid off, with the R100 now looking, and running, better than ever thanks to an A Team of rotary experts assembled from all corners of the globe, and one very passionate owner. This 1969 R100 has come further than most, though. Matt Rice has owned it for five years during which time he’s managed to build it, and rebuild it, into this atmo’ monster. One of the earlier builds saw Matt drop in an Xtreme Rotaries-spec’ 13B bridgeport. Making 295hp at the rears with a Haltech ECU and sipping on methanol, the old set-up managed to push the car to a 10.1@131mph. And then came the crash. “I was too keen to run that elusive 9sec pass and got greedy,” explains Matt of the epic crash, which has several thousand views on YouTube. “When I look back at that night I just see mistake after mistake.” For many it would have been game over, but Matt wasn’t about to give up, taking his time and revising his plan for the next phase of the build and the car’s ultimate resurrection. Matt broadened his options when it came time to replacing the driveline in the R100, and instead of knocking on the doors of any local shop he reached out to his long-time friend, Juan Illinas from West Inc in Puerto Rico.

DRAG R100
What, no turbo? Nope, this is naturally aspirated rotor muscle all the way, folks
“Juan Juan insisted that the next engine had to be a 13B PP and that Pelujilla was the man for the job. Puerto Rico is home to over a dozen 9sec N/A rotors, many of them with power plants supplied by Pelujilla,” explains Matt, justifying the choice to jump the fence and side with Australia’s long-time rotary rivals, the Puerto Ricans. After the housings were ported and blue printed they were sent back to Oz along with strict instructions from Juan regarding gear ratios and chassis setup. The rest of the engine was sent to Rohan at Xtreme Rotaries where he worked his magic. “Getting N/A rotaries to make power is just a matter of revving them,” says Matt, simplifying the process somewhat. To this end, Rohan set to work lightening the rotors and the all-important modifications to the oiling system. With the driveline underway, enter Craig Wasson – a racer, fabricator, all-motor enthusiast and the man charged with repairing the damage from the WSID crash. “More importantly, he had to make the car lighter,” adds Matt. Fibreglass doors, boot and front clip got the nod to beat the scales, all whilst retaining the classic R100 styling. The whole lot was then doused in factory Mercury Blue by Scott at Unique Customs, resulting in a decidedly original-looking car, disguising one hell of a high-tech king hit! 26 >fastfours&rotaries

DRAG R100
WHAT’S INTERESTING ABOUT THE R100 IS THAT THERE ARE MOUNTS IN PLACE FOR A 20B Engine management is somewhat of a contentious subject for rotary race cars; however Matt’s decision was made slightly easier by the fact that Microtech’s Jon Blanch is a good personal friend. “Jon mentioned that the new Microtech range offered EGT, 02, CAN technology and logging, and came with the dash unit, too. It did everything I needed, plus it helped that the Puerto Rican guys were very fond of the Microtech hardware so I had great tech support both from Jon, and from the guys abroad in PR,” says Matt. Jon supplied Matt with a tricked up LT16C from their latest Carbon series of ECUs. With all of the above matched to the Liberty transmission fronting a custom-built 9in diff’, sprinkled with Strange front suspension and mated
to a Spartan but race-inspired interior, the R100 was ready for war, and since its debut Matt has been furiously testing and refining the combo’, with a PB of 9.6 sec @ 133mph. What’s interesting about the R100 is that there are mounts in place for a 20B. Whether that hints at what is to come we don’t know, but rest assured this project is far from complete. Asked what he likes best about his ride, Matt smiles, “The noise”. True to form, turn the key and you are assaulted with the kind of aural Armageddon only a ported rotor can pump out. Thanks: “Juan Illanas at West Inc PR, Pelujilla Performance PR, Jon and Simone Blanch at Mircrotech, Scott Fitzsimmons at Unique Customs, Tim Adams for the wiring and most importantly Craig Wasson, James Shukry for their continuing support.” fastfours&rotaries > 29

oom Magazine is an Aussie institution. If you’ve been reading it through the years, you’ll be well familiar with the projects Ben and Grant used to get up to, perhaps none of which were more beloved than ‘the little car that could’, Project Cyborg. The 1988 Mitsubishi Mirage Cyborg came direct from Japan and was built up over the course of a couple of years to be a drag and race weapon all while remaining a sleeper and that whitegoods shade we all associate with sluggish vehicles… but sluggish it was most definitely not. Imagine our surprise when we found the car had resurfaced recently better than ever. Metal fabricator Anthony Burke (35) is the lucky owner. “I helped build my housemate’s 1989 Lancer. After seeing how well that went for a 1.6L turbo car, I knew I had to have something turbo (I grew up around hotrods and have owned many Falcons). I’ve always loved the three-door shape. When this car came up for sale, I knew I had to have it.
The car’s seen quite a few touch-ups, but Anthony’s keen to get a full-on respray done one day
34 >fastfours&rotaries
It was important to keep things as stock-looking as possible, which included the interior. A cage might be necessary for single digits, though

CYBORG LANCER “Ever since the first day I drove the car, the intention was to continue where Zoom Magazine finished up, but more extreme without any backing or sponsorship. The car has always been intended to be used daily and to be a good all-rounder—not great at any one thing.” The Cyborg was dug up from a dealer in 2008 in Queensland. It’s still pretty damn loud, and people still underestimate its abilities. As Anthony alluded to, he’s been through a fair few Falcons, including an original XA still with the OEM spare wheel in the boot. The 1.6L Lancer FWD came later, and that’s when the taste for boost started. “I have so many stories it’s hard to pick the best one. For people who know the car, they really like what I’ve done to it since it was Zoom Magazine’s old ‘Project Cyborg’ from 2004-2008. For the people who don’t know its history, I get a lot of ‘it’s only front-wheel drive and four cylinders, you’ve got nothing to worry about!’ to their mates. I just love being the underdog and getting to see their faces when I blast past them.” Says Anthony, “Like most builds, it’s never done. This goes double for the Cyborg, as I’ve got a goal in mind and haven’t quite achieved it yet. The journey so far has been a lot of fun, so I don’t think I would do anything differently, mainly because of the friends I’ve made from the course it’s taken.
The stroked Galant motor has been very reliable and even better now thanks to a freshen-up

In the future? Our man wants to run a 10sec pass in full street trim and keep it daily. The next round of mods will focus on E85 and raising the boost to 30psi, as well as slipping on some drag radials, not just R888s. It will then be converted to all-wheel drive and maybe push for the single digits all while keeping it stock-looking and street-registered. Given the car’s history and following, we’re quite sure it’s about to win itself a whole new legion of fans. Thanks: “First and foremost ED and Paul from Autotech Canberra (02 6260 1166). They are always willing to help out at a moment’s notice. Anthony from AJM Automotive and Performance went above and beyond to freshen up the motor. WHAT’S NEW
Looking for a single-DIN head unit that doesn’t dominate your dash but still packs enough features and punch for most? This could be what you’re after s manufacturers race to pack weird and wonderful capabilities into their new offerings, some consumers can feel left behind as their desire for a visually simple but fully-featured head unit is overlooked. If you’ve ever found yourself shopping for a unit that isn isn’tt over the top looks-wise but still has the most useful features you’d want, especially in your daily driver, then you owe it to yourself to check out the Sony MEX-XB100BT. The BT in the model number is generally a giveaway that you can use this unit with your mobile phone or other compatible Bluetooth equipped device and it’s certainly true here with both mobile phone conversation and audio streaming supported. Combined with the rear USB port that you can use to connect MP3 players (via a USB extension cord routed to the centre console or glovebox), you can play all of your tunes via your car’s speakers from the one unit. It’ll also drive most of the functions of your iPod directly from the front panel so if you want to leave yours stacked full of music and permanently in the glovebox you’ll never have to look at it again if you don’t want to.
While these features are incredibly handy, especially in a daily driver application, neither is revolutionary, and so we must look to the specifications of the unit, namely its outright performance, to determine its value to the car enthusiast who isn isn’tt chasing the be all and end all of in-car entertainment. If you haven’t bought a car stereo in the last few years you might be shocked to learn that this one packs a serious punch right out of the box. The XB100BT’s four 100W channels are enough to make a lot of noise even without a separate amplifier. Consider that for many (most) people the 4 x 50W outputs of previous Sony head units were adequate and you’ll have an idea of the leap this inexpensive tech has made. Chalk up another win for the daily driver who doesn’t want the expense or clutter of an external amplifier. There’s also a direct connection for a sub should you find your existing speakers lacking in the bass department. How a head unit looks in your car can be as important, or sometimes more important than how it performs. As something you have to look at every time you drive your car it is astounding
just how wrong some manufacturers get the look and feel of the front panel. Thanks to more dynamic displays and multi-coloured LED backlight technology, making your new head unit appear gaudy and over the top or stylish and low-key is now a breeze. breeze Thankfully the XB100BT has a number of colour combinations to choose from including Sony’s distinctive corporate red (pictured). We’d tend to set the display to the least offensive shade but other users might like to match it to their interior or paint colour. The options on this front are many so everyone should find something to suit. Suggested retail price for the MEX-XB100BT is $449.00 including GST, which represents particularly good value for a powerful, fully-featured unit from a reputable manufacturer.

T
alk about your mystery vehicles. Most of the info regarding this particular 86 is unknown. Still, the car largely speaks for itself, with a full Rocket Bunny V2 kit and Trust turbo pumping out 300ps. It is in many ways the ultimate 86 and one of the best of the breed we’ve seen to date. From what we’ve told by Kei Miura of TRA Kyoto/ Rocket Bunny, the owner ordered a super car (we don’t know exactly which one), but because it’d take month to come in, he simply asked Liberty Walk (Nagoya) to build him a ‘special car’ while he
waited for the exotica to arrive. Lucky guy. Kei Miura took care of the bodykit and installed his latest design on the 86, the Version 2. The kit features similar fenders, side steps and rear bumpers as the previous version but gets a new bumper and a ducktail rear wing. TRA Kyoto also set up the suspension (ride height, camber, etc.) and chose the wheel and tyre sizes. It can be hard to set up an 86 low and stanced out, but the team managed to get this one spot-on, with a Stance GR+ fully adjustable damper kit front and back (12kg/mm front, 14kg/mm rear). Thankfully, the extended form of the new kit did allow for serious
fitment in the form of some of Work’s finest designs to date. The Meister M1 three-pieces have some serious negative offset front and back, the rears being 10.5in wide and stretched over Proxes 255s. It’s a look that would have any import fan creaming their overalls. LB Performance, perhaps better known as Liberty Walk, took care of the new Smurf paintjob and sent the car off to Todoroki Jidousha (Osaka) for engine modifications. Miyazaki-san (Todoroki Jidousha) removed the engine, opened it and installed new low compression pistons and conrods of his own choosing and specification. He wouldn’t tell us what they are, but they’re definitely not Subaru parts, that’s for sure.
INTERESTINGLY, THE DIRECT INJECTION SYSTEM HASN’T BEEN REMOVED AND STILL PERFORMS ON CERTAIN ENGINE PHASES

WORK 86 Says photographer Jean-Christophe Pepino, “Todoroki Jidousha is well known for its old Toyota (AE86) tuned for track use and drifting. The tuner also recently built a V8 86. The car finally got tuned at Phoenix’s Power (Kyoto) using Ecu-TeK. The boost was kept to 0.5bar for safety reasons, as the owner wasn’t looking for some kind of undrivable beast.” Yet… Interestingly, the direct injection system hasn’t been removed and still performs on certain engine phases. If you aren’t aware, Phoenix’s Power, a veteran member of the famous RH9 club, is just a block away from TRA Kyoto. The two shops often do business together. It’s a rather fortunate place to be if killer imports are your thing. The interior stays pretty much stock with only a new steering wheel and a Cusco roll cage. There is nothing crazy here, as this was designed to be a car that’s street legal and driven on a daily basis. First seen at the Trust/GReddy booth last Tokyo Auto Salon and in a number of shows since, we’re really pleased to be bringing you this mystery ride. It’s no Ferrari or Lamborghini, sure, but we’ll be damned if it’s not as much fun.

The re-trim gives the Capella a new lease on life. A cage is to follow
R
otary Mazdas come in all kinds of
configurations in terms of porting and block set-up, but right up there in both the volume and performance stakes is the bridgeport. It’s not something that wins many fans from the grey nomad brigade, but boy does it sound like Armageddon when done right, and this Capella is all kinds of right. The 1973 Mazda Capella is Josh’s “all-time favourite car.” He built this one to be street-driven and enjoyed. It’s been a hectic one-year build, but as Josh notes, cruising with a full-cut bridegeport on the street is kind of worth it. Formally Josh owned an RX-3, 200SX, Wrangler and Commodore. None are a Capella, though. Some $30,000 later, he can’t find much to complain about. Says Josh, “The car was bought and then I decided to rebuild the motor at Gam Engineering. I decided on an N/A full-cut bridgeport. Glenn worked his magic and got the job done.”

“I’M LOVING LIFE. THIS IS MY DREAM CAR”

STREET CAPELLA What a job it was, including billet flywheel, new clutch, booster, slave cylinders, gearbox, diff rebuilt and more. The noise that followed from this set-up? Some 112dB after tuning at Insight Motorsport. “I decided to take it to a good mate of mine at Hercules Paint and Panel. A few beers later he decides he’s going to respray the whole car because of a few crow’s feet I was unhappy with.” Said mate started the job quickly and soon discovered it’s acrylic paint, so it was off to the soda blasters at Sydney Soda Blaster. The car came back and Andrew got straight into it. He changed the rear beaver to RX-2 round light, flared the front and back guards, and got the got the whole body dead straight with too many man hours to count. “The car was now in hi-fill and blocked down ready to hit the booth.”
A turbo set-up will come soon, but for now there’s a heap of power on offer from the N’A 12A 72 >fastfours&rotaries
fastfours&rotaries > 73
Once more Andrew did his thing and flowed that paint on like a pro. He then made a decision to sand all the chrome back and matte black it out. Stripes down the side followed by Steve at Letzgo, wheels by Top Class Tyres and the interior re-trimmed by Gary’s Motor Trimming. It was all coming together. The Capella shipped off to Tattersall Auto Electrics for the sparking stuff, with the final unveiling going down at Hercules Paint and Panel. Fresh and neat in solid white with modern details and custom stripes, it looks a million bucks. Josh was well-pleased. “I’m in amazement how Andrew got the car to this stage. Finally I got to cruise the car. I’m loving life. This is my dream car.” The work involved is top shelf and a real credit to all the shops involved in the build. It’s easy to go shabby and half-assed on a project like this, but Josh has gone all the way. The results speak for themselves. Coming soon will be the new turbo set-up and a mini-tubbed rear. That should see the old girl down the strip in good time indeed, but for now it’s the street this hi-po captain is calling home. Thanks: “Andrew at Hercules Paint and Panel (0414 968 125), Glen at GAM Engineering (motor/ box), Gary at Gary’s Motor Trimming (interior/boot), Craft Diffs, Tattersall Auto Electrics (electrics), Scott at Insight Motorsport (tuning), Top Class Tyres (wheels), Steve at Letzgo (stripes)
The body was soda-blasted to a bare shell to get the perfect finish. It was worth it
