Old Gray Archives and Museum

OLD GRAY ARCHIVES + HOKES MUSEUM FALL 2007 The Old Gray Cemetery is Knoxville’s first cemetery. It is located just outside of the downtown area and is filled with a beautiful landscape. The program was a museum and archive for the cemetery. By juxtaposing the two programs and the idea of the panopticon, the project emphasized the power inherent in knowledge and history. The center of the archives was occupied by a sole historian and his/her work station, while the center of the museum was an atrium space through which all museum goers would pass. The Hokes Archive was driven by the work of Beauvais Lyons, a UT professor of print making working with themes of irony and the absurd. Since both these ideas require an element of performance, Performance became a key concept influencing the design. Balconies and openings acted as stages for Lyons to ‘perform’ the role of Hokes archivist, including into the gallery, street, and neighboring restaurant

NORRIS DISCOVERY CENTER: RESIDENCE Spring 2008

Private / Semi-private

This project was to be a temporary residence for researchers at the Norris Discovery Center. There were to concepts driving the design of the residence. The first concept was to reinforce the communal and collaborative nature inherent in research. This was accomplished by establishing a single shared path to the Discovery Center, as well as, through programing a communal kitchen/dinning space and a library study space. Both elements of the concept are intended to encourage socialization and the sharing of knowledge.

The second concept driving the design of the residence was the idea of a boardwalk on to the Norris river. This concept took advantage of views up and down the river that are typically only capture while in motion crossing a bridge. The living units were paired together and offset to maintain to create views up and down the river for each unit and facilitate cross breezes through the units during the summer.

Beijing has become a complex city in the 21st Century, politically, economically and especially environmentally. This project is an architectural response to the changing political spectrum of Beijing and China. This studio was part of the initial research for the UT Solar Decathlon 2011 entry, and therefore, sustainability underlined the project. In addition a 10 day trip to Beijing was a part of the studio and allowed me to better understand the complexity globalization has played on the history of Beijing. A

Borrowing from the traditional Beijing courtyard complex, the Hutong, a simple one bedroom living modular unit was design. This could be stacked and rearranged to make larger dwellings. The modern Hutong masterplan created groupings of different combinations of the units, to diversify the demographics within the complex. Thorough sustainability analysis was conducted to utilize as many passive energy concepts as possible to achieve zero energy.
