Valladolid Literature Foundation

Valladolid, Spain

A mixed usage building with different levels of privacy that contains a literature foundation for 4 Valladolid authors. It includes semi-independent libraries, offices and research spaces, as well as an independent restaurant and a versatile public Forum.

The building is designed on a small site surrounded by Heritage and large-scale constructions in Calle Expósitos, one of the oldest streets in Valladolid, located in a neighbourhood that maintains the genetic memory of the city. The medieval and renaissance DNA is present in its palaces, monasteries and narrow streets.

This work served as my final degree project, resulting in an “A” grade.

Valladolid’s palimpsest: indescribable city. City Walls, Rivers and Palaces

A City sprinkled with palaces

Between the 17th and 19th centuries, numerous palaces and noble houses sprang up in Valladolid, giving the city its characteristic low density and marking a character that still endures today. In these streets, the ideas of privacy typical of the period appear, where the different constructions, present the sequence Zaguán (entrance hall) - Courtyard - Staircase or garden. They mark the passage between the public and the private and the passage between the two.

the neighbourhood.

The plot of land of this project, witness of all the previous events, keeps in its genetics the passage of time and the evolution of Valladolid. It guards the fragments of what was the first fence of the city, the remains of the palatial building once annexed to the palace of Fabio Nelli and bears witness to the changes in the character of the old town, from the 17th century to the present day.

The site is flanked by a number of vertical giants that corset its outline. The singular piece of land is an indecipherable palimpsest that holds the genetic identity of the city.

Outline, surroundings and the ruins of the Medieval defensive wall

When configurating the façade, the idea was to achieve a discreet and timeless look. The scale of the inherited palatial façade is accepted and used as a mask for the new building. The main façade is composed using one of the most widely used proportions in the history of architecture, 2 : 1. Pedro Mazuecos himself, the main architect of Fabio Nelli’s palace, used it to compose the monumental façade.

The pediment is divided into five fragments of lightened, textured, precast concrete, in reference to the main parts of the building: the four foundations and the research tower. The latter does not make itself present in the street, but withdraws in a gesture of humility towards its surroundings.

The main doorway nods to the great emblazoned arch of the palatial façade (the old entrance to the complex) using the same proportion, this being √2. The element consists of a fifteen-centimetre thick, heavy-looking wooden gate with a pivoting shaft. It is given a minimalist character, with no ornamentation other than the metal joints.

groundfloor: The Forum

Neither a foyer nor an assembly hall, the Forum is conceived as an experimental space into which both the street and the foundations flow. It is a porous room with undefined limits, that instead of enclosing itself within four walls, slides outwards, opening its possibilities.

The intention is to blur these limits by dematerialising the corner with a continuous enclosure and using the Portuguese-type granite cobblestone paving in a continuous manner.

A remain of the old defensive wall appears in The Forum. This trace is outlined in the pavement and continues towards the Garden of Literature.

The Vertical Imposition

In person, the verticality of the place engulfs the space, like a funnel. The project enhances this quality in the, devising heavy vertical planes and zenithal light entrances.

The large canvas over which the light from one of the parallel skylights slides, presents the apparent inconsistency between the massive and the gentle, rising twenty centimetres off the ground and serving as a filter between the research area of the complex and the more public part. This “floating wall” creates a heavy enclosure that nevertheless does not come to rest on the ground, allowing a view but no access to the research tower.

Study on Light

Basement. The researchers’ room

Below ground level, a small room is placed for those who need to analyze historical documents or to nourish their doctoral theses. The research room is designed as an introverted space, where natural light bathes the study panels from above. Under the hanging staircase, part of the remains of what used to be the counter-scarp of the medieval wall are uncovered, bringing the researcher into contact with the historical memory of the place.

A pomegranate tree filters the sunlight that comes from the garden.

Light

“Light is essential to architecture, in such a way that there is no architecture without light. Space can only be understood under natural light, which is architectural in its chromatic, spatial and temporal conception”

Born in Valladolid, her family moved to the Madrid neighbourhood of Las Maravillas when she was a child, which was to inspire one of her most emblematic works. Rosa Chacel was a restless woman with a thirst for knowledge. An eternal traveller, the war and the need for inspiration took her to Brazil, Germany, the United States and Argentina. It was in Buenos Aires that she wrote La Sinrazón (1960), now considered her best work.

The project pays tribute to her resilience and wisdom by planting an olive tree in the back garden, a tree of peace and prosperity.

Reuse the Lake Chapel

San Lorenzo Nuovo, Italy

This competition was Reuse Italy’s third entry since it was created. My teammate and I decided to participate because of the Heritage oriented approach of the contest and the romantic quality of the fallen church and its bucolic sourroundings.

This project was awarded the FIRST PRICE at the Reuse Italy International Competition “Lake Chapel” in 2022

Correlation between the Church, the lake, and cardinal directions S. Giovanni in Val di Lago. General view.

20 ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO

For the project’s generating concept, we decided to act conclusively but silently, respecting the monumentality of the Church of S. Giovanni in Val di Lago and its presence in the landscape.

Following the traces of the Via Francigena, we are claiming this North to South axis as a guide for every Pilgrim. From the fountain located at the North corner of the area (1) , a straight fragmented limestone line is drawn, creating a Land Art inspired intervention (2). The East-West orientation is used for placing the architectural complex. A concentric square surrounds the church and serves as an external auditorium that blends with the pavement.

Where the North-South and East-West axis collide, the Pilgrim’s refuge (7) appears.

The Church’s octogonal main building is given a new roofing by creating a perimetral brick shell that encases a polished concrete dome. This dome is separated a few centimeters from the shell, allowing sunlight to penetrate and giving the impression that this element floats over the heavy bearing walls. This floating effect welcomes the visitors to ask themselves what the actual position of the roof was, as we don´t have any conclusive proof of its actual appearence.

The East Chapel is S. Giovanni in Val di Lago’s primal element. As such, it becomes the heart of the restoration. Its North entrance is reopened as the finish line for every pilgrim’s journey and the building itself is given a new meaning of welcoming and purification.

A new and elevated limestone pavement surrounds a shallow water pond, from where a prismal altar emerges.

Intervention in Hadrian’s Villa

Tívoli, Italy

Throughout its long history, Hadrian’s Villa has been an imperial palace, a quarry for the nearby cities, a ruin after the fall of the empire, a tourist site, and one of the largest Roman complexes which has given birth to a great knowledge of architecture.

This project has sought to recover part of its image and the roads that existed in it, a great network of exterior and underground paths that allowed movement around the villa. The intervention fixes our gaze on the trenches and terraces that were generated.

This project was awarded the FIRST PRICE at the IV International Architecture and Heritage Award “AR&PA”

A central point is generated with two small buried buildings that function as a visitors’ centre, creating an exterior terrace from which the three underground structures start. From this point a branching of paths is created, like the branches of a tree, to create secondary routes that invite us to look for ancient structures or to “get lost in archaeology”.

The intervention that has been carried out in the theatre has been through the consolidation of the archaeological remains and the recovery of the volumetry it may have had, in order to transmit and show visitors the form and use it had. Corten steel plates were also placed around the perimeter of the cavea in order to reconstruct the theatre volumetrically.

Milestone Towards the Apex

East Mývatn, Iceland

This competition sought a solution for a visitor centre and cafeteria at the foot of the Hverfjall volcano, Iceland.

The proposed response consists of an element that functions as a catalyst between the arrival path and the ascent to the crater of the volcano, an abstract element in the landscape that invites to a circular route inside and then leads the visitor to the top. It seeks to create a refuge from the open and unprotected landscape in which the centre is located.

This project was awarded a GOLD MENTION at the Bee Breeders International Competition “Iceland Volcano Coffee Shop” in 2022

The entrance to the building consists of a slit in its southwest facade that leads to a semi exterior passageway. From this point we can choose between starting our visit grabbing a hot drink at the Coffee Shop or sliding to the left and getting know the visitors’ centre. This room breaks the introver nature of the building with a panoramic window for the visitors to contemplate the landscape while learning about its history, flora and fauna. The exhibition room serves as a nexus between this two spaces and gives the building versatility and different options of privacy.

To ensure a proper insulation, we decided to work exclusively with wood and other naturally insulating materials. We also made sure to provide the building’s envelope with a generous layer of thermal insulation that would cover the technical necessities of the site. The use of wood for the project’s structure is not arbitrary. It is easy to build up, recyclable and modular, ensuring an easy montage at a remote location.

A continuous wooden shell generates a milestone in the landscape. As its shape contrasts its surroundings, visitors are attracted towards it.

The timber frame structure allows the construction to be fast and uncomplicated. As visitors tour the facilities, the timber beams come along their path.

The floor plan generates a path inside the buiding that invites visitors to discover the different spaces and gently guides them towards the volcano.

Private areas belong to the exterior walls leaving open spaces connected to the courtyard for people to enjoy

Full restoration of a House in the North of Spain

Asturias, Spain 2022

This 2022 project seeks the renovation of an existing building in a small fishing village in the north of Spain. The design idea is to open up the rear façade to the striking sea views as well as to give the 100 year old house a new and more fluid concept of space. The state of the building requires a full restoration, including a new roof and floor framings.

Groundfloor First floor Attic

The new floorplan attends to the needs of the client. Due to the beautiful views available, the first floor is designed as the main living area, leaving the groundfloor as a gathering area for family and friends. The attic is left open plan, to be used as a studio. The most dramatic change is the relocation of the staircase, now much more accessible and convenient.

To ensure an adequate insulation, it was crucial to improve the thermal inertia of the building envelope. The main façade could not be adequately insulated on the outside, so it was decided to design a continuous plaster cladding on the inside of each room, as well as a new roof with adequate insulation.

The backyard is around 0,50m above the ground floor, so adequate drainage and waterproofing is ensured at the perimeter.
