UES Upper East Side

This unit is creative drawing & digital application. It is a unit where we explore our creativity in drawing, layouts, typography and digital applications. The final outcome is to write an 800-word article to put into the publication we made. I chose the theme: The Upper East Side. I wrote an article about the notorious lifestyle of Gossip Girl and specifically the fashion do’s and dont’s in Gossip Girl.

My article is spread throughout the whole publication. The article is written in an informal tone, telling audience what to wear and what not to wear referencing characters in Gossip Girl. It’s fun and easy to read, which targets teenage girls.

Throughout this unit, I learned to use adobe softwares to edit my pictures and indesign to put into nice layouts for my publication. On the other hand, I also had drawing and painting lessons. The aim of these lessons are to produce relevant artwork by hand, and put into computer and digitally process them ready for putting in the publication.

I was required to keep a blog and update what we are doing in this unit everyweek. Post blog about our

D I G I T A L â—?

This is the digital fashion unit. In this unit, I am supposed to pick a brand that specializes in print designs, and try to mimick the brands theme and style to create our own print designs for the brand. I chose Givenchy as my brand. I did some brand research and drawings to mimick Ricardo Tisci’s style. It was not easy to imitate his gothic and taboo style. The unit introduced us to the Lectra softwares, such as Kaledo Print, Kaledo Style, Diamino, and Modaris. I made the pattern pieces of my sweatshirt on Modaris, and did exercise for variations. I devoted every monday to print making. I made artwork and scan them into the computer then isolated wanted elements to be featured in my print designs.

I did research boards, customer profile, competitor board, mood board and color board before starting designing my prints.

I made some artwork that I thought it’d be suitable to use in my prints. Also I downloaded high quality pictures on flickr to pull out elements and integrated in my prints. All of these are accomplished with Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, and Lectra Kaledo Print.

Final Print Designs Addition to prints design, this unit also requires us to design 6 variations of a jersey shirt using Lectra Kaledo Style to make flat drawings. These flat drawings include seams, shadows, all kinds of details, and final prints.

Back in Modaris, I stitched up all the pieces of my shirt in the desk of stitches. After the shirt is being “stitched, the shirt is ready to be fitted on a 3D software, allowing me to see the front and back with my prints on.

I used Modaris to create and edit the pattern pieces of my shirt. I labelled each pieces and how many to cut to create the variant, which holds vital information of the pieces when they passed down to manufactureres. The Diamino allows designers to know how much fabric the whole garment is going to use, and the most economical way to cut fabric.

Aichmophobia

This unit is called Creative Practice, which we adapt a concept and make our own white t-shirt. In this unit, I learned the basic skills of pattern cutting, sewing, and skillset for other industrial machinery. I chose the theme of sharp objects. I’ve always had a fear for sharp objects (Aichmophobia), there I want to use this theme as my project to overcome my discomfort. So from the beginning of my project, I already set a vision for my shirt: it shall be minimal, sharp, clean, and avant-garde.

Simplicity, Edges, & White

While developing my concept and designs, I had practices with pattern cutting and sewing. I was introduced to different types of machinery, and how to use them. I learned about different types of stitches, and interfacing to help with white shirt.

Design Feature In this project, I wasn’t allowed to change the most part of the shirt. The only things I was allowed to change was the collar, placket, and cuffs. I was also allowed to add things such as a second fabric, pockets...etc.

Before starting the actual white shirt, I made my patterns out of calico and then sew them together as my toile. Then in the sewing workshop, I sewed a basic t-shirt in denim without any changes in the pattern. Finally, after getting the patterns and sewing right, I started my white shirt.

This unit is named Creative Realisation. I drafted a mind map at the beginning to find inspiration and build up a theme. The unit is graded on sketchbook work, , sample collecting, designs for a capsule collection of 6 outfits.

My theme is The Fan Girl. I see people get crazy over their idol, or favorite celebrity, and never quite no why people behave the way they do. So my goal was to investigate the fandom craze and their relation to fashion.

Fan Girl

I found out that when fans are obsessed with their celebrity crushes, they learn to dress, and act like their idols. The emotional state they get in is unbelievable.

I did some artwork alongside with research in my sketchbook. Throughout the research, I experimented with prints and style for my garments. Using elements from my research, I made my model template for designing as well.

I found inspiration in pop culture for developing my print for the collection. In a lot of album art, I noticed the existence of triangles. I decided to use it as the main elements of my prints.

So then, I did some experimentation of the triangles with origami, and exploration of color use.

b/ackøps denim

This is the Denim + project. In this unit, I am required to create a hypothetical brand that specializes in denim products. Studying brands such as Hollister and Levi’s, I decided that my company mainly designs and produce denim garments, but also sells other everyday outfits. I visioned my brand inspired by the free and relaxing lifestyle of California coast side. The clothes should appeal to young teenagers across the globe.

I designed quite a few logos. I decided to use them all and made them all into stickers for my brand identity. However, the pink one is the company’s main logo.

I really dwelled on “unique selling point”. I decided to target young customers from age 13-30. My company has a special line which we set up pop-up shops at universities, highschools, festivals, and designer markets around the world to promote our brand. The pop-up stores at universities and highschools sell denim jackets that have the school name and mascot designed on them which appeal more to these young students.

Let’s Get Technical! Creating a brand meant doing my research properly so I’ll know how and where to make money. This 4P exercise helped me understand what my price range is, my target market, how to promote, and what my unique selling point is.

The concept of my brand is basically, “Love life, and Chill. The clothes carry the legacy of proud American denim. We hold pride in the denim we make here in San Francisco. The brand embraces elements of beach, sunset, friendship, and pop-culture.

From Clam Beach, Eureka to Coachella 2016. B/ackøps Denim is everywhere.

For my lookbook, I went to the beach and did a photoshoot with my friends wearing all kinds of denim garments. The idea was to recreate the californian vibe in South coast of England. It was quite successful. Besides the photoshoot, I’ve asked few of my friends living in california to take pictures at the beach, at popular destinations, and diners. The background of the pictures are essential therefore I was really picky with what goes in my lookbook.

My body of work includes brand identity, packaging, a lookbook containing photos from all the photoshoot I’ve done. I also have mockups of store, pop-up store, and jackets.

Throughout the unit, I keep a blog and update it every week to show my progress to the tutors.

B/ACKØPS DENIM

b/ackøps denim b/ackøps denim While having colorful logos, and photos; I’ve decided to keep my packaging simple, rustic and minimal.

A range of business cards printed on acetate.

For my packaging: I have a cardboard box, tissue wrapping paper with stamp patterns, string tags, and thank you cards.

Rustic thank you cards, with address of the company. With handmade pockets.

Lastly, a mockup for my store. Since my logos and photoshoot pictures are bright and full of colors, I decided to renovate my store in neutral colors to match the rustic packaging I’m doing.
