ADELLEA PURWADIPURA FINDS OUT WHY PUBLIC DISPLAYS OF AFFECTION (PDA) OFTEN LEAVE SOME OF US FEELING UNEASY AND QUEASY.

Open displays of affection in public places such as the school canteen and neighborhood park are often frowned upon in Indonesia. But do most people really care … it’s just a pair of huggin’ and kisssin’ lovebirds, right?

TIO NUGROHO, 17 Sunway University “I get that there’s nothing wrong with showing love and affection, but exhibiting it in public is just not cool. It is simply inappropriate. If you can’t keep your hands off each other then it’s your problem, but don’t involve the whole world. I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels uncomfortable with PDA. Bear in mind that there are some cultures where PDA isn’t only considered inappropriate, but also disrespectful. If they want to hug in public then that’s OK, but anything past that and I get uncomfortable.”

In fact, I don’t mind a little bit of romance in public so long as it doesn’t affect me or anything I do. I probably would care a lot more if watching a couple kissing in public somehow gets me a girlfriend. Otherwise, I’ve got other things to worry about. Listen my Mom kisses me on the cheek and hugs me in public all the time. No big deal.”

ASK Anggi

The Joy of Love A

sk your close friends about February, and it’s very likely their answers will be something related to love. That’s because the month is usually associated with Valentine’s Day, a special time when the world celebrates the spirit of love. Like many of you, I think love is a terrific feeling. At its best, being in love makes us a better person. You divide your time properly between studies, family and extracurricular activities so that by the end of the week, you can spend more time with that special someone. When you’re in love, everything seems wonderful all the time. But when do we really know that we’re in love? Don’t you think that the word “love” is overused and abused? Despite what the media would like you to believe, no one can really fall in love after just two months of dating (if you do, you might want to slow things down a bit). This is usually because you’re still in the infatuation stage of your relationship. If it really is love, then you will confident about making your feelings known. But confessing one’s love is never easy – what if the other person doesn’t feel the same way as you do? And anyone who’s ever experienced unrequited love knows just how much that sucks – in fact, some people need months to recover from the emotional 16

distress it causes. So love really is a double-edged sword. On one end, you experience passion, trust and comfort. On the other, you have to face disappointment, uncertainty and endless compromise. Oh love… Why are you so complicated? I don’t know the answer to that question, but Albert Einstein might. Here’s an excerpt from a love letter written by the genius himself: “Gravitation cannot be held responsible for people falling in love.” He couldn’t have said it better. While I can’t offer any concrete dating and relationship advice, I can tell you that you

Making t Contact Coun

can’t love or be loved if you don’t love yourself. That means accepting yourself as you are, and coming to terms with certain aspects of yourself that you cannot change. If you want someone to fall for you, you must first have self-respect and total self-acceptance. So go ahead and experience love! But remember, the more you love yourself, the more you will be able to give love to others. Happy Valentine’s Day! + Anggi Nurqonita

Letter of the month MOM’S NEW GUY Dear Kak Titaz, My mother is a single parent and I am very close to her. A month ago, she started dating one of her co-workers. I feel like there’s a growing gap between us ever since she started dating this guy. It upsets me so I often find myself arguing with her for no reason. The truth is I am jealous that she’s dividing her attention between me and her boyfriend. What should I do? Steffani, 16 Hi Steffani, I know how you feel because my Mom is a single parent, too, and I reacted the same way when she dated for the first time. Your jealousy is totally understandable given that you are so used to having your mom all to yourself. But as I grew older, I realized that everyone needs to have a partner in life. Your mother, just like you, also has the urge to be with someone she loves. Picking fights with her isn’t the solution. In fact, it will just make you feel worse. The last thing you want is to make your mother sad, knowing that you are being childish and, yes, selfish for not letting her find her own happiness. I suggest that you come clean with your mother and tell her that you miss spending quality time with her. Don’t just assume that she knows how you feel. And instead of giving her a guilt trip for having a boyfriend, why not try to get to know him? For all you know he could be fun to hang out with. I’m not a mother, but I know for a fact that mothers are always trying to be there for us – in their own ways, of course. Why can’t we do the same for them? Everyone deserves happiness, and so does your mother. Tell your mom I said hi ;) 18

OLD FLAMES DIE HARD Dear Kak Titaz, I’ve been spending a lot of time with my exboyfriend lately. We’ve grown close recently, having been selected to work on the same committee. It started out totally friendly, until we started flirting last week. I think I may be falling for him all over again, but I’m not sure if it’s a good idea to go down that road. Help! Etta, 18 Dear Etta, Old flames die hard … Hmm, why does it sound so familiar? The good thing is you acknowledge the potential problems that may arise should you two decide to give the relationship another try. The bad thing is falling for an ex is an unpleasant and complicated feeling. My advice is that you avoid him for a few days. Let yourself think whether your feelings for him are temporary and only triggered by your frequent interaction with him recently. Also, think about the reasons why your relationship with him didn’t work out in the first place – are you ready to have him back given his attitude, character and priorities in life? Lastly, think about whether the infatuation is mutual. You don’t want to be that girl who’s chasing her ex, only to face an embarrassing rejection. If the answers to those questions are all positive, then go ahead and get him back. But if you don’t even know the answers to those questions, then perhaps it’s best to remain good friends … at least for now.

USING THE RIGHT EXPRESSIONS, TENSES AND ADJECTIVES IS IMPORTANT IN CONVERSATION.HERE ARE SOME COMMON MISTAKES – AND HOW TO MAKE SURE YOU GET THEM RIGHT.

y s a E

Discussions:  Singular vs. plural  English expression  Past and present tense  Adverb vs. adjective

The Situation: Dita recently found out that her best friend Emily has broken up with her boyfriend. She meets Emily and tries to find out what happened. Dita: Hey Emily. May I ask you [some] question? Emily: Sure. What has [been] on your mind? Dita: I [hear] that you and Daniel had broken up. Is it true? Emily: [Unfortunate] , yes. We finally realized we had nothing in common, so we split up. Dita: I’m sorry to hear that. I’m sure you’ll find a better guy [on no time] . Emily: Thanks, Dita. You are [a truly friend] . 20

The word “question” is used without an “s” at the end, which means it is a singular form. Dita should have said “a question” and not “some question”.

“What has been on your mind” is incorrect. The right expression is “what is on your mind”.

Since the rumored break-up has happened, Dita should have said “I heard (past tense)” and not “I hear (present tense)”.

Emily should have said “unfortunately” (adverb) instead. An example of the correct use of “unfortunate” (adjective) is “street children face an unfortunate life growing up”.

“On no time” is the wrong expression. The right expression is “in no time”, which means in a relatively short time. “You are a truly friend” is the wrong expression. Emily should have said “You are a true friend”.

POP column

HEARTBREAK

AND PROMISES There is nothing worse than breaking up before Valentine’s Day, with everybody else seemingly lovey-dovey while you are down in the dumps. Natasha Ishak recommends these five songs to help put all that heartache behind you.

I

know love is (supposedly) in the air this month. For some of us, though, Cupid’s arrow doesn’t always strike in February. Anyone who has ever experienced heartbreak shortly before Valentine’s knows what I mean. Even if you are no longer with your special

someone, you can be sure that you’re not alone. Just blast all those emotional, heartbreaking songs and you will find it easier to cope with the heartbreak during this season of love. In descending order, here are the top five songs on my heartbreak playlist:

5) A Thousand Years (Christina Perri) Following the success of Jar of Hearts, Christina Perri successfully tugs at our heartstrings once again with her single A Thousand Years. The lyrics revolve around devotion and everlasting love, making it the perfect soundtrack for Twilight: Breaking Dawn part 1. This self-professed “Twihard” (Twilight fan) also admits she was inspired by Edward and Bella when writing the song.

3) Somebody That I Used to Know (Gotye feat. Kimbra) Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past year, you will know this song as one of the most popular songs in 2012 (almost as addictive as Carly

4) It Will Rain (Bruno Mars) The past few years have seen the rise of talented singer-songwriters, but none of them writes lyrics like Bruno. Although he is perhaps best known for penning happy-go-lucky tunes, he is also an exceptional lyricist for poetic and touching love songs. It Will Rain, telling of a couple on the verge of break-up, is his most sentimental work to date.

Rae’s Call Me Maybe). Somebody That I Used to Know has sold 10 million copies, making it the biggest selling single of 2012. Singer-songwriter Gotye admits personal experience of going through breakups served as inspiration to write the song. Guess this proves that any artist can definitely benefit (and profit!) from getting their heart broken.

22

2) Someone Like You (Adele) Someone Like You is hands down the ultimate break-up song to play when you’re feeling rejected. Adele’s struggle in moving on from a past relationship is something many of

us can relate to. Those painful lyrics combined with her powerful voice are a sufficient tear-jerker. But just like any bad relationship experience, don’t end up repeating this song for too long! 1) What Makes You Beautiful (One Direction) Honestly think I was going to leave the world’s hottest boyband off this list? Unlike the previous songs selected, this one is optimistic and cheerful. Just a reminder that you will one day meet someone who will tell you what makes you truly beautiful! Hopefully these tunes will help you feel a little better, as long as you mix in a few hopeful love songs. Because life is too short to cry over someone who doesn’t deserve you, and be confident there will always be someone better just around the corner.

TRAVEL great place to lap up the scenery and enjoy the breeze. An eclectic mix of modern furniture makes it even more unique. Try to reserve a table in the garden for your romantic Valentine’s rendezvous. The view is all yours if you are prepared to spend no less than Rp 150,000 for an appetizer, main course, drinks and dessert.

SEGARRA SEASIDE ESCAPE Address: Jl. Lodan Timur no. 7, Pantai Carnaval Ancol, North Jakarta Since opening in 2007, this open plan seaside restaurant has become one of the hippest eateries in Jakarta. Add to that the chic architecture and view, and it’s the perfect place for a date for two. The best time to stop by is at night. Snuggle into one of the beach-front sofas for a more private experience and simply enjoy the ocean breeze. A nice meal for two – the seafood is fresh and delicious – will set you back about Rp 300, 000.

SKYE BAR & RESTAURANT Address: Jl. M.H. Thamrin no. 1, Menara BCA 56th Floor, Central Jakarta Take romantic dining to a higher level at this exclusive restaurant. Situated in an office tower in the heart of Jakarta, spacious Skye

Pick from the wide range of Asian, American and European dishes, but save room for the really yummy desserts. Like its location and name, its prices are sky-high: get ready to fork out at least Rp 250, 000 for a one-course meal, including dessert. Hey, if you managed to somehow land a table, then the experience will be worth every penny.

COCORICO CAFÉ Address : Jl. Bukit Pakar Timur 19 Dago – Bandung – 40198 Cocorico offers traditional Indonesian, Oriental and Western food. While the food is relatively good, nobody is coming here only for the eats. Situated atop a hill and cradled amid mountains, this is a

THE PEAK RESORT DINING Adress : Jl. Desa Karyawangi Ciwaruga KM 6,8 No. 388, Kecamatan Parongpong Located 1,350 meters above sea level, The Peak is blessed with spectacular views. And guess what! The food isn’t too bad either. Sure it is going to cost you a lot, but Rp 300,000 for a delicious complete meal (appetizer to dessert) in a beautiful restaurant sounds like a good deal. FYI, the US Wagyu Top Blade with Gravy Brown Sauce Cafe d’Paris is the best steak there is in Bandung. One more thing … before you embark on your romantic journey, it’s recommended that you wear warm attire. Then again, it also gives you an excuse to cuddle up with your special someone.

et’s set the record straight: I’ve never been a devoted fan of K-pop bands. Yes, I watch the variety shows and the dramas from time to time, but I am not a big fan of anyone in particular. I make an exception for Girls’ Generation (aka SNSD). Since making their debut in 2007, Taeyon, Jessica, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona and Seohyun have captivated the world with their beauty, vocal quality and dancing skills. But I like SNSD for a different reason. 34

Style Chameleon I have a soft spot for SNSD because the girls are fearless when it comes to reinventing their image. Remember what they looked like when they started out in the music business? Their mini skirts, T-shirts, matching hats and high heels were inspired by school girls. A year after their debut, SNSD donned a sportier style. The peak of their sporty phase was at the end of 2008 and beginning of 2009, around the time of the promotion of the

SNSD’s latest fashion transformation has drawn compliments and criticism. Dini Inaya confesses she is a fan of the controversial makeover.

first EP, Gee. It has been reported that on Dec. 26, 2008, posters of Girls’ Generation members wearing roller-skates were posted all over Seoul. SM Entertainment was overwhelmed by the number of calls it received from fans inquiring about the posters. The band maintained the sporty look up to the release of the second album, Oh!. Knee-length socks and cropped jersey jackets were added

to their look. They also occasionally wore cheerleaders outfit. Going Ghetto The girls’ most dramatic style transformation happened on Jan. 1, 2013, following the release of I Got A Boy, the band’s latest single from the album of the same name. As you may expect, the album was a massive hit, topping music charts across the world. The music video

racked up over 24 million views in just a little over a week on YouTube. While fans agree that this album is the band’s best musical effort yet, many fans are disappointed with the girls’ wacky fashion in the music video. They don oversized sweaters, patterned (and transparent!) leggings over baggy military jackets and sneakers. And there is no missing the colorful hair extensions and fake tattoos. Put simply, the

girls have gone ghetto. I believe there must be a reason for this unexpected transformation. I Got A Boy is SNSD’s first attempt at entering the American market. My guess is that the S. M. Entertainment bosses think that the cute and sporty school girl image won’t get SNSD anywhere in America, while an edgy, grungy and overall wacky style would at least get them noticed. The look aside, SNSD’s latest album also has a different beat, with a mix of hip-hop, rock and electronic music. Despite the misgivings of fans in Asia with the fashion and musical transformations, it seems the girls are heading in the right direction to conquer America. It has been reported that the album entered the Top 20 on the iTunes Bestselling chart in the US. So, while I think the girls could have toned it down in the hair department, overall I like the new look. What about you?

FAR How do you keep love alive when you live in a different city or even nation from your boyfriend? Carmel Moersalim finds a way.

A

ll couples experience ups and down in their relationship. But there is one issue that is a major challenge for even the strongest bonds: one of the partners must move to another city or nation. The big question then is whether to commit to a long-distance relationship, often known simply as LDR, or call it quits. “I think if a person is in doubt about whether or not to be involved in a LDR, then that person is scared of getting hurt,” says Jessica Nathalie, 18, who has experienced living far from her loved one. “What I’ve recently learned is that you cannot protect yourself from sadness without also protecting yourself from happiness.” Whether you want to maintain the true value of your relationship, or simply do not feel comfortable being far from your partner, either way you should always discuss them 36

together with your boyfriend/ girlfriend. Remember that being in a relationship is to be half of a whole; don’t decide whether or not you want a LDR alone, but get your other half’s views, too. Have a rational and calm discussion – be levelheaded even if you don’t agree with each other’s opinions. “The bond and the love must be strong that it makes all the miles not matter. Being so far apart will put everything to the test: trust, commitment, loyalty and patience,” Jessica says. Titan Tyra, 17, lives in Singapore but her boyfriend is at college

in the US. Her decision to fight for the relationship is based the belief, “You can’t just throw love away because true love doesn’t expire”. She admits there are difficulties, especially the lack of physical contact, but “I know that even without it we can still love from the heart”. The first few months apart are usually the most difficult. However, with a focused attitude and a whole lot of effort, take these tips from Jessica and Tyra to maintain a healthy relationship:

Skype because they fell asleep or miscalculated the hours. Time difference or not, this is bound to lead to hurt feelings and even fights. While you might not be at fault, being patient and understanding with your partner will help them realize their mistake and hopefully not repeat it. 3. SHARING Sure, you don’t get the chance to spend an entire day with your loved one, but you can always share stories with each other. Tell them how your day went – be honest because lying is never a good idea in a trusting (see above) relationship – and ask what they got up to. An advantage of a LDR is that due to the physical absence, you won’t easily get bored with each other’s stories.

1. TRUST Without trust, you can’t have a normal relationship let alone a LDR. If they say they can’t call or have a Skype session with you, for whatever reason, you have to trust that they’re telling the truth without surreptitiously checking with their friends. When trust is lacking, you will find yourself with a failing relationship filled with accusations, arguments and suspicion.

Try not to count the days until you see each other outside a computer screen because the saying “a watched pot never boils” is terribly accurate. When you do meet up again, despite all the hardships or maybe because of them, it will be that much sweeter. Perhaps absence really does make the heart grow fonder.

2. PATIENCE Time differences can be the biggest enemy of couples in different countries. You may find yourself accidentally stood up on

about me is that I am a cool and quiet prince charming. I’m actually quite talkative, despite also being a shy person. You’re so good at singing love songs that it is hard to believe you’re not romantic. Have you ever experienced infatuation, heartbreak and all that jazz? I have experienced love for sure, but nowhere close to the kind of love that I sing about in my songs.

When did you first know you had vocal talent? I knew I could sing from when I was very young. I would be invited to sing on stage at different occasions, but I never actually showed my talent because I was shy. I used to sing my lungs out in the bathroom though. A bathroom singer! How did you get to where you are right now? My friends and I rented a recording studio in 2007. It was one of those random days; we wanted to record some songs for private use. A music producer, who happened to be at the same studio, heard me singing and offered me a contract. It took me about a month before taking the offer because I wasn’t sure if I would be comfortable in the public eye. 40

Would you say you were an overnight star? I wouldn’t say so. I don’t know if you know this, but I actually auditioned for Indonesian Idol way before signing my first recording contract. I made it through several rounds, before finally backing out. I wasn’t cut out for a popularity contest. Did you have any training before launching your debut album? I learned to grow a thick skin by performing at different cafés in Jakarta for three months. Your first two albums, which revolved around love, were a massive hit. Are you a hopeless romantic? No, I am not a romantic person [laughs]. I’m too shy to be romantic. Is that the biggest misconception about you? That I’m a romantic guy? Nope. I think the biggest misconception

Your third album is decidedly more cheerful than your previous efforts. Why? I wanted to create an album that people would still listen to 10 years down the road. I believe the only way to do that is to come up with themes that are timeless and optimistic, and with a rather upbeat music arrangement. Think Chrisye’s danceable numbers, which never fail to make me smile and dance. Tell us about Pesan Cinta. I used to hang out a lot with Nino (Anindyo Baskoro of RAN) and Inu Numata. We would listen to Chrisye’s music and sing together. Taking cue from Chrisye’s upbeat numbers, we decided one day to write Pesan Cinta, which tells of love at first sight. What do you hope to achieve in 2013? I want to complete my studies by May. Professionally, I want to have a concert this year and the opportunity to collaborate with international musicians.

YOUR GUIDE TO LOOKING AND FEELING GREAT FOR YOUR BIG DATE ON VALENTINE’S DAY!

Get in Line

Kiss & Tell

While eyeliner comes in many different forms, only a few actually provide that long-lasting effect. We recommend using Urban Decay’s 24/7 Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner. Use this product to create a soft winged look during the day. If you’re feeling seductive, try going for a cat eye effect for an evening out. Urban Decay 24/7 eyeliner is also available in pink, blue, gold and purple.

Maybelline’s Color Sensational High Shine Gloss has a creamy texture similar to lipstick, but also provides that subtle sheen found in lip gloss. The “doe foot” applicator (the fuzzy sponge at the tip) allows the liquid to glide evenly on your lips. While the product does last longer than most brands, be sure to touch up your pout after eating.

Love Scents

Leave your acne worries at the door with Clean & Clear’s Advantage Acne Spot Treatment. This colorless and odorless gel helps to reduce redness and shrink pimples while keeping skin shine free. Available in a 22 ml tube, the useful cream can easily be stashed in your clutch.

If you’re worried about not smelling as good as you look, a quick spritz of Yves Saint Laurent’s In Love Again will banish that body odor. This perfume includes an irresistible mix of black currant, orange, Muscat grape and tropical fruits. One whiff of this scent and your boyfriend will definitely fall in love with you all over again.

STYLISH SWIMMER WITH HIS LEAN PHYSIQUE, broad shoulders and boy-next-door charm, Tariq Bethune is an instant girl magnet. The 15-year-old competitive swimmer’s secret to looking good is regular exercise and good grooming. The Sinarmas World Academy student also shares his dreams of making a difference in the swimming world. What motivated you to become a competitive swimmer? I took swimming as an extracurricular activity when I was in 3rd grade. I participated in several extracurricular activities at that time, but nothing was exciting anymore. I asked my mother if I could join the swimming class and she said yes. I soon discovered that I was pretty good at, especially for a 7-yearold boy. What followed was intensive training, and the rest is history.

What do you do to stay focus before a competition? I turn on my iPod, play David Guetta or Eminem. I block out the noises around me to help me focus. Apart from swimming, do you have any other interests? I don’t [laughs]. I don’t even go out on the weekends because I would rather spend time swimming. Fortunately, I do have a bunch of friends who enjoy swimming, too. What does it take to be a good swimmer? It definitely takes a lot of commitment. Swimming twice or three times a week isn’t enough to hone your skills, especially if you want to be a professional swimmer. I personally believe that when it comes to swimming, you either give your best or not at all. I remember a time when I wanted to give up swimming because the training was too intense. I was a 4th grade student then, and my parents stopped me from quitting. I’m grateful that they did, otherwise I wouldn’t be where I am now. What items do you always carry in your bag? I always carry Fastskin 3 goggles, swim cap and swimsuit. They’re the best. I also bring two energy drinks – I get tired – and a bar of chocolate. What grooming products are a must? My hair gets wild and kinky after swimming, all thanks to the chlorine in the water. I trust Herbal Essences shampoo to keep my hair manageable. I also never leave my house without my comb.

Growing Hope

I

f you happen to be in Bandung and walk past the intersection of Jl. Seram and Jl. Riau on a Sunday morning, you will have a chance to witness what Taman Harapan is all about. Every week, a group of people, mostly children, gather under a big tree at the junction. Volunteers teach the street children basic school subjects such as mathematics and English, as well as other practical and social skills like handpainting, team-work building games and crafting musical instruments from

52

The rising number of street children with no access to proper education prompted Dadan Wijana to establish Taman Harapan (The Garden of Hope), a community advocating social equality and street children’s welfare, in April 2011. “We want these children to participate in activities that help them become openminded individuals,” Dadan explains. He firmly believes the most effective way to get the children off the streets is through education.

“We emphasize character building in educating these children. We don’t want the street children to grow up and still maintain their current ways of life.” Dadan started Taman Harapan with only one friend to help. Over time, more friends and even passersby rolled up their sleeves to help out. At the moment, there are more than 20 Taman Harapan volunteers, with at least five of them facilitating the activities every week. There are no special requirements to take part in the program.

“Taman Harapan is for everybody,” says Dadan, who hopes more people will be motivated to show their support to similar communities. He believes that every one of us can do our part to change the lives of underprivileged children by imparting our knowledge to them. Similarly important is to raise awareness on the issue of street children. “Once people are aware, I hope they will contribute to the effort of getting these children off the streets,” says a hopeful Dadan.

I

f you had told me 10 years ago that I would be a student in the United States today, I would have thought you were joking. But life has a way of bringing surprises when you least expect them. As fate and luck would have it, I was awarded a short-term scholarship to America when I was 20 years old. In 2012, I received a second scholarship from the US State Department under the Fulbright-AMINEF program, the latter standing for the American Indonesian Exchange Foundation. The scholarship is called the Community College Initiative Program (CCIP), a fully funded 10-month program to enhance career skills for those who already have a bachelor’s 58

University Life

degree or diploma and a minimum of two years’ working experience. This was a monumental event in my life because I had always dreamed of studying in the US. Coming from a typical middle class Indonesian family, even vacationing in America was a luxury that we just couldn’t afford. Upon finishing high school, I attended a respectable local university. I studied hard, scored an internship and subsequently got myself a job at The Jakarta Post. But even then, I knew I wanted more. I wanted to make my American dream come true. The Process There were more than 50 CCIP Indonesian scholars in my batch, the largest number of any nation. Hundreds more grantees came from other countries such as Egypt, Cameroon, Costa Rica and Turkey. It was a long and winding road before I could even step foot on American soil. Upon submitting my scholarship application, I had to wait a month before it was approved. This was followed by another three months for medical check-ups and vaccinations, which are mandatory

for every applicant. It wasn’t until a few more months later that I finally received the good news. It was the longest six months of my life. Orientation Week Before leaving for the US, AMINEF threw a pre-departure orientation in Lombok. It was a memorable event, and I had the chance to meet many like-minded young people. By August 2012, I was finally on my way to America. My first stop was Chicago, where the foundation organized yet another orientation for three days. It was here that I met scholarship recipients from all over the world. There was this exciting energy surrounding the event, with everyone having the chance to express their colorful and beautiful culture. Never in my life have I heard so many different languages all in one place! Once orientation finally came to an end, we all said our goodbyes and set off for different states. Together with six other grantees from Pakistan, India, South Africa and Brazil, I was headed to Everett, Washington. College Life As a journalism student at Everett

Community College, I live a typical American college life. One of the toughest things about this experience is homesickness. My scholarship ends in June 2013, and it has been quite challenging being away from my family for so long (the program doesn’t allow participants to go home during this period). Although I am used to traveling and living on my own, the thought of not being able to return home bothered me. While I can deal with it a little better now, I must admit that the first three months weren’t easy. To get my mind off Jakarta, I decided to travel to other states during my free time. I’ve also made an effort to immerse myself in the local culture to really try soak up this new way of life. The most fascinating thing about this experience is the learning process of the classes here. Students are expected to ask questions and participate. This type of learning environment encourages more discussion and interaction, which is unlike back home, where engaged and keen students are usually seen as attention-seeking and irritating. American students are also more individualistic compared to my school friends in Indonesia. Frankly speaking, it can be a little hard to make friends in the beginning. If you’re wondering what else I’ve been up to while I’m here, be sure to snag the upcoming issues of Speak! I plan on sharing plenty more exciting travel stories with you. Here’s a hint: you’ll find out how I managed to travel to four different states in just 10 days! 59

She’s A A

s a gap-toothed six-year-old, Connie Talbot captivated Simon Cowell and the public with her pitch-perfect rendition of Over The Rainbow in the first series of Britain’s Got Talent in 2007. She delivered outstanding performances week after week, and speculation was rife that she would bring home the £100,000 cash prize. As it turned out mobile phone salesman-turned-opera singer Paul Potts swept the top honors. 60

Connie’s online popularity was massive at this stage, with more than 300 million hits on YouTube. Now, five years and four albums since her first performance on TV, Connie is something of an icon in the Far East and the US. Connie visited Jakarta for the first time just a few days before Christmas in 2012, and Speak! chatted with her about Mr. Cowell, pocket money and sleepovers.

Claim to Fame “I had always wanted to audition for the X Factor, but I was too young to do it. When I heard that there’s a new talent show that has no age limit, I asked my parents to take me to the audition,” Connie shares. Her mother, Sharon Talbot, always knew that Connie could sing well, but she didn’t know just how well until she saw her child perform Over The Rainbow on the audition day. “Connie started singing at the age of two, and she played piano by ear. So yeah, I knew she had the talent. But my heart sank when she went on stage – I was so nervous for her. I would have told Simon [Cowell] off had he said anything nasty to Connie,” says Sharon, who together with husband Gavin accompanied Connie to promote her new album in Asia. Asked if she was disappointed that she didn’t win the competition, Connie says she was happy with the outcome. Making it to the final, she adds, was a life lesson she will always treasure. “I’m actually happy that she didn’t win,” says Sharon, “We had no idea what was coming after she joined the show. We had people standing outside the house and the phone was ringing

off the hook. My husband and I got really worried at one point that we hired a bodyguard for Connie. I can’t imagine what would have happened if she had won the title.” Simon Cowell promised a record deal for the young star. But just two months later, Connie’s dreams were shattered when his music label Sony BMG decided she was too young for a recording career. “I had recorded the album, titled Over The Rainbow. But because things didn’t work out as planned, I signed with a new recording label,” Connie explains. Luck wasn’t on her side, as the new label went bankrupt a few months after Connie signed the contract. Her albums ended up in a warehouse, and it seemed like her 15 minutes of fame had come quickly to an end.

Humble Girl Fortunately, people who had watched Connie’s audition tape on YouTube demanded the release of the album. When the album was finally distributed by record labels in Asia and America, it was an instant hit, selling hundreds of thousands of copies. In Taiwan, her album outsold that of Mariah Carey. “The next thing I knew, I was singing on state television in China to 400 million viewers, I performed at the opening ceremony of G20 Summit in South Korea and I had screaming fans in Hong Kong and Japan – and that’s just in Asia,” says Connie with a smile. In America, she won over the public when she made appearances on Oprah and Ellen. More recently, she performed I Will Always Love You at a tribute event for Whitney Houston. Who is the most interesting person she’s met so far?

“Toby Gad!” she says, referring to the Grammy-award winning American songwriter/producer. Gad, who has produced songs for the likes of Beyonce and Justin Bieber, has written a few songs for her as well. Connie claims that she’s not a big star back home, and her mother Sharon says prefers it that way. Sharon says: “The absence of fame in Britain has allowed Connie to live a normal life without the usual issues associated with child stars. I like the fact that her friends and teachers don’t treat her differently because she was once on TV.” “I tell my friends when I’ve gone to somewhere interesting, but I don’t really talk about my singing. Nobody thinks of me as a celebrity, and as my mother said, it’s actually a good thing for us,” says Connie. Asked what her favorite activities with her friends are, Connie cites “playing netball” and “doing sleepovers”. But now that she’s a professional singer with millions of fans worldwide, does she get to buy whatever she wants? “Just like my schoolmates, I get the same £10-a-week pocket money,” she says with a chuckle of her Rp 156,000 allowance. 61

Candid Chelsea Olivia’s entertainment career is still soaring after 13 years in the business.

t 20, Chelsea Olivia is one of the top working actors in Indonesia. In show business from the tender age of seven, she has starred in 23 soap operas and over 30 commercials. She owes her success in part to her delicate features, shiny hair and perfect complexion, a preferred look for movie producers and directors in casting her as abused and sympathetic lead characters. It’s the kind of role that propels a newbie to stardom.

I really loved posing for the camera and entertaining people”

Don’t be fooled by her sweet on-screen demeanor. In real life, Chelsea is a tough, sharp and quick-witted girl. In an interview with the busy actor, I was blown away by her confidence and eloquence. I gathered that she’s not afraid to speak her mind, albeit diplomatically. She is quick to say that she wasn’t always like this. The Lampung native claims she was very shy as a child. “But I was always comfortable with the camera,” she adds. “Turn on the lights and I would transform into this confident child in a snap of a finger. I really loved posing for the camera and entertaining people.” Her apparent interest in the entertainment industry prompted her parents to enroll her in a local modeling school. This was clearly the right move, as Chelsea soon landed her first TV commercial for a fast food giant.

That’s the point of being an actor – you have to delve into the character that you’re playing. I like to challenge myself that way”

Girl on a Mission After several TV gigs, Chelsea and her family decided it would be more practical to relocate to Jakarta. “We were constantly traveling between Bandar Lampung and Jakarta; it was exhausting! As I received more and more jobs, my parents agreed that relocating to Jakarta was the right thing to do,” says the youngest of three siblings. The family arrived in Jakarta in 2001, and it didn’t take Chelsea long to snatch lucrative roles in bigbudget soap opera productions. There was 2002’s Setetes Embun (Drop of Dew) and 2003’s Bayangan Adinda (Adinda’s Shadow). And after a few minor roles in three productions, she took the leading role in 2005’s Kodrat (Fate). Her role in 2006’s Cincin (The Ring), in which she acted alongside Dude Herlino and Baim Wong, made Chelsea a household name. “That’s when I really started get-

ting noticed by the public and the industry,” says the starlet with a hint of pride. Later that year, Chelsea joined Bukan Bintang Biasa (No Ordinary Star), an ensemble of rising young stars singlehandedly chosen by noted musician Melly Goeslaw to be her protégés. Together with Raffi Ahmad, Dimas Beck, Laudya Cinthya Bella and Ayushita, Chelsea was featured in Melly’s hit Let’s Dance Together. BBB, as fans fondly call the group, was so successful that a production house decided to make a feature film entirely dedicated to the group. The film’s soundtrack, performed by the group, was a commercial success. Challenges for Chelsea The young actress currently stars in the soap opera Raja dan Aku (The King and I). She plays a modernday princess who is forced by an evil queen to live a regular life as a

15-year-old student. Wait a minute … a 20-year-old playing a high school student? “It’s definitely a challenge to play a role like this, only because I’m no longer a teenager. But that’s the point of being an actor – you have to delve into the character that you’re playing. I like to challenge myself that way,” she comments. When not busy on set, Chelsea keeps fit with archery and Muay Thai training. Chelsea, who is in a six-year relationship with former co-star Glenn Alinskie, dishes on the secrets for a lasting relationship: “Trust and communication are crucial for a relationship to work. And we’ve done well on both fronts.” She describes her version of the perfect date as “a week-long getaway on a private boat to a tropical paradise”. Then again, she says she would also settle for “a simple dinner as long as I get to spend some quality time with my boyfriend”. 65

My personal favorite is the Combination Pizza, featuring tasty layers of minced meat, thinly sliced sausage, shredded cheese, chopped vegetables and mayonnaise (since we Indonesians love pouring mayonnaise on almost every Western food we eat) on a thick, warm and delicious pie. And at this price, you’ll find it hard to complain.

Movie Business Gelda Sella Monika tells Matahari Kesadaran that her ultimate dream is to become a movie director. So why did she sign up for a business course? Name: Gelda Sella Monika Age: 18 University: School of Business and Management, Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB)

A LITTLE BIRD TOLD ME THAT YOUR DREAM IS TO BECOME A MOVIE DIRECTOR. SO WHY ARE YOU IN BUSINESS SCHOOL? I do want to become a movie director and a producer one day. But I figured that a little business knowledge would also be beneficial because it can be applied to almost any career path. WHY ITB? Its School of Business and Management offers a performing arts class, which is something unheard of in other business schools. In this class, I get to learn about acting and scriptwriting. I also like the fact that the 74

assignments at ITB require students to work in teams, which teaches me about teamwork and people management. These two skills are useful since directors have to work with a lot of people during filming.

time with my friends at the malls, shops and cafés in Bandung. While I do miss my parents, it’s nice to get a chance to make my own decisions without having them tell me what to do.

COLLEGE VS HIGH SCHOOL … WHICH ONE IS BETTER? High school is more of a tight-knit community. As for college, you get to meet all sorts of people, but that doesn’t mean they automatically become your friend. While you can develop close friendships in college, students here are generally more individualistic and guarded compared to high school students.

WHAT DO YOU SEE YOURSELF DOING IN 10 YEARS? As you may have guessed, I am focused on making it big as a movie director. My dream is to raise the bar for the soap opera industry in this country. Quality entertainment shouldn’t only be available in the movie theater – home viewers deserve quality shows, too! I plan to run a theater with street performers as actors, and I also want to provide basic housing for the homeless.

WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING IN COLLEGE? It would have to be living independently and away from my family and friends. I’m enjoying my new life here as a college student, and just love spending

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS? Don’t study too hard. Take it easy but stay focused. When it comes to your future, follow your gut instincts.
