Indie Go

WE ALL ENJOY A GOOD POP SONG FROM THE LIKES OF KATY PERRY OR MAROON 5, BUT THE BIG NAMES DON’T HAVE A MONOPOLY ON GREAT SOUNDS. WE ASK FOUR STUDENTS TO TELL US ABOUT THEIR FAVORITE INDEPENDENT ARTISTS.

INTAN F. ANGGRAINI, 21, Prof. Dr. Moestopo University Songs from popular artists can get old after being played over and over again on the radio – which is very irritating! – so it’s nice to listen to an unknown musician every once in a while for something fresh. I am currently listening to a lot of The Paper Raincoat. Check out their songs “Don’t be Afraid”, “Sympathetic Vibration” and “Broken Blurs” – so good!

MARIA RUTHY H.L., 16, Ricci 2 High School I like all types of music, but I do enjoy listening to indie music a lot more than I do pop. Finding a musician or band that is relatively unknown but has amazing songs is like discovering hidden treasure. Bastille is on repeat on my MP3 these days. I especially enjoy “Things We Lost in the Fire”, “Icarus” and “Sleep Song”.

ULFAH APRIYANTI, 20, Bina Nusantara University Personally, I think in terms of quality, today’s mainstream music has gone down the drain – there isn’t much originality. My favorite song is “Undercover Martyn” from indie band Two Door Cinema Club. What I respect most about indie artists is that they don’t make the kind of music they think will be popular; they dare to be different and make the music they want to make.

WILSON ARIYADUTA, 20, Bina Nusantara International University I love listening to Kimbra. My favorite tracks are “Cameo Lover” and “Good Intent”. I don’t mind when my favorite indie artists start topping the charts; that means they’re doing well, which is good, right? So long as they don’t give in to the pressures of mainstream media but stay true to their self. 10

GIRL TALK

You Ask,

I Answer

Choices … they can be so difficult to make sometimes, but they have to be taken care of. Let Titaz Permatasari help you find the answers. Send questions on the issues that are bothering you to speak@thejakartapost.com

Letter of the month Scene Stealing Dear Kak Titaz, I love creating short films with my friends and one day I hope to become a successful filmmaker. That is why I really want to study film in college, but my parents are pushing for me to get a degree in something “safe”, like accounting or law. How can I make them understand that filmmaking is what I really want to do? Adelia, 17 Dear Adelia, Despite what you might think, the truth is parents always have their children’s best interest at heart. Obviously your parents want you to pursue a steady career path in the hope you will have a good future. Arguing with your parents won’t get you anywhere. Action speaks louder than words, so if you’re really serious about becoming the next Stephen Spielberg, then show that to your parents by immersing yourself in film: start shooting and make some movies! If your parents refuse to budge after all your hard work, it’s probably better to do as they say. But that doesn’t mean you can’t pursue your passion. Nurture your talent by joining the campus film club, get involved in the local film community and compete in film festivals; this way you get to pursue your calling and also respect their wishes. 12

From a Distance Dear Kak Titaz, I am really upset because my best friend is moving to the US next year with her family. Of course, we’ll still keep in touch through Facebook and Skype, but I know things aren’t going to be the same. I’m afraid we’ll slowly drift apart and eventually forget each other. Is there anything we can do to make sure our friendship will last forever? Sasa N., 15 Dear Sasa, I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but that’s life, honey. Saying goodbye to your nearest and dearest is tough, but the good news is with multiple social media ways to stay in touch these days, it’s a lot easier to maintain long-distance friendships than you think. Of course, things won’t be the same. She’ll meet new friends and have a new life there, and so will you. These new developments shouldn’t get in the way of your friendship. Look at these changes as interesting stories to share with each other. If both of you are committed to keeping this friendship alive, then I’m sure you will still be the best of friends for years to come. Remember, absence makes the heart grow fonder.

Shortcut to Stardom

Ruth Christine looks at how much reality TV talent shows shape the winners’ rise to fame.

W

hat do Beyonce, Nicole Scherzinger and Christina Aguilera have in common? They all got their start in show biz by competing in talent shows. That’s right: Televised talent quests were taking place long before the likes of American Idol and The X Factor popped up on our TV screens. Talent quests, which seek out the best of the best, make achieving your wildest dreams of stardom seem relatively easy: sign up, audition, get through elimination rounds, and – boom – you’re a major superstar making millions. Or so it seems. The reality is far from the dream, and winning today’s most popular (and competitive) talent shows on TV does not guarantee success. In fact, in many cases, contestants who did not take the main prize end

up being more successful than the actual winner. Take Carly Rae Jepsen, for example. In 2007, she finished third on the fifth season of Canadian Idol. But Carly has sung her way to worldwide fame with her single “Call Me Maybe”, beating Justin Bieber’s record as the first Canadian artist to top the digital charts. Or consider Joy Tobing, who won Akademi Fantasi Indosiar (AFI) season 1 only to leave the music industry, whereas Judika Sihotang, the runner-up in season 2, is making waves in the entertainment world. These competitions certainly provide a platform for undiscovered talent to show the world – music executives and producers in particular – what they have to offer. But the real requirements for success remain the same: hard work and ambition. Don’t believe me? Well, get this:

Out of the 312 finalists over the 13 seasons of American Idol, only 18 have gone on to become bestselling artists. So being successful is not about which reality show you’re on or finding the best shortcut to success. It is about how much you are willing to sacrifice to reach your goals. 15

Quick Fix

Sometimes it seems there just aren’t enough hours in the day for a girl on the go. Here are a few beauty cheats to keep you looking good during those hectic days. Flat Out

After a full day running around doing errands, the last thing you feel up to is cleaning all the makeup off your face – you just want to hit the pillow and sleep. Shortcut: Do a quick swipe with cotton and baby oil, which is effective enough to remove mascara and eyeliner but gentle enough to cleanse and moisturize the skin. We love Johnson’s Baby Oil

Hot Honey

The cute boy you’ve had your eye on stops by to ask if you want to hang out. Sure – except that you’ve been out in the sun all day and you’re sweating like crazy. Shortcut: Politely excuse yourself to the bathroom and spray mineral facial mist all over your body to hydrate and refresh your skin in a quick minute. Wipe away excess mist with tissue, spritz on some perfume and you’re good to go. We love Jurlique Purely Bright Mist

Greasy Gal

You wake up late on the day of an important internship interview, but – uh oh – your hair looks like it is in dire need of a wash. Shortcut: Sprinkle some baby powder on your hair and scalp. The powder will absorb the excess oil in your hair and help clean it. The fresh scent will also leave your hair smelling oh-so-nice. We love Burt’s Bees Baby Bee Dusting Powder + Ruth Christine 18

Sleepy Head

The all-nighter you pulled to finish that biology project has left you looking tired, but your ride to school will be arriving in five. Shortcut: Focus on one area of your face. If you feel your skin is looking a little worse for wear, then slather on some tinted moisturizer. If there are bags under your eyes, put on a dash of mascara – just do one quick makeup touch and you’re out the door. We love Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer

main feature

Game Changers Speak! looks at how the most influential icons in music made their way to stardom.

The Beatles

BEFORE A group of four aspiring musicians from Liverpool called The Beatles snagged an audition for Decca Records on New Year’s Day of 1962. The boys played a set list of 15 songs in an hour to a label representative, who rejected the band because “groups with guitars are on the way out”. TODAY As history’s best-selling band (one billion units and counting) with more albums atop the charts and singles sold than any other act, The Beatles are far from over. They helped bring British music into pop culture in the early 1960s and, most importantly, inspired countless musicians afterward, with such bands as Oasis, Radiohead and Coldplay naming the “Fab Four” as a musical influence. The most remarkable aspect of The Beatles is how their songs and lyrics have remained relevant and fresh even today – 50 years since their debut.

Madonna

BEFORE A penniless college dropout, Madonna moved to New York in 1978 hoping to make it big. She worked odd jobs to make ends meet and did gigs with modern dance troupes. TODAY One of the hardest things to maintain as an artist is originality and longevity, and Madonna has mastered both – all while staying true to herself. Her second album Like a Virgin achieved worldwide success in 1984 and spawned the iconic girly-goth look that defined the era. From urban cowboy to disco diva, Madonna has successfully reinvented herself time and time again. Despite the controversy surrounding her work, we believe it is Madonna’s innovative artistry that is her ace. It’s no surprise that 12 albums and countless number-one hits and awards later, Madonna is still rocking out on stage, having closed her MDNA tour last December. 20

Chrisye

BEFORE Chrisye was originally a part of Gipsy, an Indonesian band formed by the Nasution siblings. The band later collaborated with Guruh Sukarnoputra, son of founding president Sukarno, on the record Guruh Gipsy, which was released in 1976 to critical acclaim. TODAY The musician, known for his soothing voice, went solo after the success of the single “Lilin-Lilin Kecil” (Little Candles) in 1977 and released a total of 31 albums throughout his career, including nine compilation albums. He received two Lifetime Achievement Awards, among others. In the years since his death from lung cancer in 2007, Chrisye has remained a memorable figure in Indonesian pop culture. Last year, a second tribute concert to the late singer was held. The concert featured a holographic figure of Chrisye performing his biggest hits with artists such as Melly Goeslaw and Gita Gutawa.

Michael Jackson

BEFORE A musical prodigy at age 5, young Michael was one of The Jackson 5, along with his four older brothers. The group enjoyed major success with hits like “I Want You Back”, “ABC” and “I’ll Be There” and was considered one of the biggest pop acts of the 1970s. They broke up in 1984. TODAY Instead of becoming a child star has-been, MJ, as fans lovingly call him, went on to be one of the most successful artists of our time. Of course, there were his back-to-back number one hits, his trademark “moonwalk” that has been copied by many (looking at you, Justin Timberlake!) yet never matched, and his second album Thriller, which sold more than 65 million copies worldwide, making it the best-selling album of all time. But perhaps Michael Jackson’s greatest achievement was breaking down the boundaries of racism, particularly in mid-west North America, and bringing people together through music.

Jimi Hendrix

BEFORE Jimi Hendrix joined the army at 19 but was discharged after a year when it became clear he had no interest in military duty. After leaving the army in 1962, he made the rounds of Nashville’s music scene, performing with other artists he met on the road.

TODAY Jimi Hendrix’s ingenuity, showmanship (the rocker was notorious for his wild antics and flamboyant get-ups) and technicality with the guitar has earned him a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and rightfully so. Hendrix, who took to the strings when he was 6, made plenty of sweet tunes with his The Jimi Hendrix Experience bandmates: “Purple Haze”, “Machine Gun” and “Voodoo Child”, to name a few. But it was his rendition of the US national anthem “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Woodstock Music Festival in 1969 that is regarded by rock fans as one of the era’s most iconic moments. + Natasha Ishak 21

The Next

Wave

With so much talent on the music scene, it’s hard to figure out who will outlast their 15 minutes of fame. Prick up your ears for these five musical acts we think stand out from the pack. Austin Mahone

Being called “the next Justin Bieber” can only mean good things, right? But there is more to this 17-yearold than good looks and shiny hair. After garnering plenty of publicity on YouTube through his popular song covers, Austin is now ready to show the world what he’s got. His first single “11:11” debuted at number 19 on the Billboard Heatseekers Songs chart and, despite having only four singles to his name, Austin has already snagged several awards, including this year’s 2013 MTV Video Music Award in the category “Artist to Watch”. His star continued to rise after he opened for Taylor Swift and Bridgit Mendler on their summer tours. He’s done several TV appearances, and contributed a song to The Smurfs 2 soundtrack with fellow newcomer Becky G. Austin’s career definitely looks promising, but don’t take our word for it – check out his debut album Junior Year, out this month.

Neonomora

Originally known as Ratih Suryahutamy, this 25-year-old singer has had critics and music fans abuzz since her 2012 debut single “You Want My Love”. Growing up in a family with an appreciation for the arts, her musical influences vary from jazz artists like Stevie Wonder to rock bands such as Florence and The Machine (to whom she has been frequently compared). She describes her music as “folk rock with an electronic touch”, a totally different sound from what we usually hear from young Indonesian female artists. Fans can enjoy her powerful, sultry voice live when she takes the stage at this year’s Java Soulnation. 22

The Neighbourhood

It’s never easy for alternative rock bands to find a place in the mainstream market, but The Neighbourhood’s “Sweater Weather” proved too good to ignore. The song was released in early 2012 but only gained attention after it received massive radio airplay and topped the Billboard Alternative Songs chart in June. The California band has since gained a following through their nostalgic sound and consistent use of black and white in their videos. We’re certain this band will get even bigger after their US tour, which runs until November.

Sarita Fraya

This Semarang native might be new to the local music scene, but we think her acoustic approach is a welcome breath of fresh air. Sarita, who has performed multiple times at the Java Jazz Festival, was born to parents with a great fondness for jazz. This influence can be heard in her original debut single “Twenty Two” – one of the six songs on her EP Imperfectly Perfect. Want to learn more? You can download the single for free from the Rolling Stone Indonesia website.

5 Seconds of Summer

Another YouTube-born talent, this pop-rock band used to cover songs by popular artists like Mike Posner and Bruno Mars, and performed small gigs before they were signed by Sony ATV in 2012. They have since released two EPs and are opening for boyband One Direction on their “Take Me Home” tour in February. The One Direction boys have shown plenty of support for their Australian opening act; Niall and Louis have even tweeted links to the band’s music videos a couple of times. Well, we say if you have the support of the world’s most popular band, then you’re as good as gold. The band is expected to release their debut album later this year. +Lia Levina & Karen Priyanka 23

Your Take And we don’t mean your nose. Speak! rates the hottest hits in pop culture to read, see and hear!

Read The Fault in Our Stars by John Greene It is rare to find a unique love story these days, but this book manages to avoid romantic clichés and offers a unique tale of love and self discovery. The Fault in Our Stars follows cancer patients Hazel Grace and Augustus on their journey to Amsterdam, and the many life lessons they experience. John Greene’s fresh style of writing gives the story a nice balance of humor and romance without smothering us with cheesiness (sorry, Nicholas Sparks). If you’re a romantic at heart, this book is perfect for you. If you’re a cynical skeptic, give it a try anyway; it might just alter your outlook on love and life. Rating: 5/5

Kick-Ass 2 Vigilantes Kick-Ass and Hit Girl are back and ready to battle it out with the evil goons in Kick-Ass 2. But there is another force they need to deal with that is probably tougher than any villain they have faced: high school. Chloe Moretz is as awesome as ever as everyone’s favorite teen girl superhero, unfortunately pushing Aaron Johnson’s main character out of the spotlight. The plot could have been better, but otherwise the action sequences still make it a fun movie to see. Rating: 3/5

Hear Native by OneRepublic After four years of waiting, OneRepublic fans can now enjoy the band’s third album Native. The song “Feel Again” was the record’s debut single, but we think the follow-up track “If I Lose Myself” deserves more attention (we love DJ Alesso’s hot remix on the song!). Compared to previous albums, Native delivers a far more impressive track list and takes on a more folksy vibe, which will definitely resonate with fans of bands like Fun. and Mumford & Sons. Our top track: “Au Revoir” Rating: 4/5 24

f you are a fan of X Factor Indonesia, you probably recognize Mikha Angelo as the show’s baby-faced guitarwielding soloist. His evident talent, musical know-how and boyish good looks helped Mikha soar through the competition to the Top 4, when he was eliminated. But Mikha’s musical journey is far from over. Despite his departure, Mikha remains popular (especially among girls) and he became the first X Factor contestant to snag a record deal with a major label. Not too shabby for a 15-year-old wannabe musician. So how has fame been treating the audio engineering student so far? Apart from his hectic schedule, Mikha says little has changed. “I think I’m pretty much the same guy I was before the show,” he says. “I realize now that I’m in the limelight I need to watch what I do, especially since I’m very active online. But I don’t want it [fame] to completely change the way I am. I guess it’s a balance between being more selfaware and staying true to me.” Of course, being young and famous has its perks. For one, the easy-going guitarist/vocalist has learned to come out of his shell a lot more. “I don’t talk much at school because I’m a bit introverted by nature, so it’s difficult for me to strike up conversation. I usually wait for people to talk to me first,” he says with a hint of embarrassment. “But now I feel I’m more outspoken than I used to be.” Older brothers Mada Emmanuelle, 19 and Reuben Nathaniel, 16, who, along with Mikha, make up the band The Overtunes, testify to this. Mada is glad about his brother’s transformation, saying, “He’s less shy and much more open now. I’m happy his new-found self-esteem is making a good impression on the people he meets.” Formed in 2010, The Overtunes are

alancing the traditional and modern is nothing new in fashion, but Manikan has successfully merged the two worlds in its line of cool accessories. Galih Hastosa and Parinatra Candrarka, the designer duo behind the brand, started the label in 2011 after getting to know Endek,

Where do you get the inspiration for your designs? Galih (G): Most of it comes from the street style we see today, as well as the fashion bloggers we meet. We try to create trendy yet practical designs. Our bags may be designed according to what’s hot today, but we still make sure they have enough space to carry a load of stuff. You two collaborate on Manikan. How does that work? G: A particular issue for us is communication as we’re based in different locations: I’m in Denpasar while Parinatra is finishing school in Bandung. Sometimes we have misunderstandings, but that’s only natural. Parinatra (P): Yeah, I agree. A lot of time management goes into running a business, and its double for us since there are two people running the show. But it’s all worth it when customers tell us how much they love our products.

the traditional fabric native to Bali. They use the concept “simply unique” for Manikan, characterized by chic bags and accessories infused with Endek patterns and fabric. Manikan pieces are being sold in Singapore and Malaysia too – proof that traditions have their place in modern-day style.

to introduce Ikat [traditional fabric] to the world. P: Andy Warhol, and one of my good friends, Windu Segara Senet. Favorite quote? G: “Pon Pon Way Way Way” spoken by Japanese artist Kyary Pamyu Pamyu. It sounds a bit ridiculous, but my interpretation of it is that whatever happens, be happy on your own terms. P: Steve Jobs once said: “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. … And most importantly, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They [your heart and intuition] somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”

Describe Manikan in one word. G: I’d say “growing”. There were many skeptics saying that our brand would not do well in the market, but we have managed to find a clientele, especially in Malaysia. P: “Revolutionary”, because our mission is to transform the traditional into something modern. Who is an inspiring role model for you? G: Didiet Maulana. I admire his efforts 33

A HELPING HAND

Sharon Anastasia Garnady knows the importance of giving back. The 21-year-old student at Pelita Harapan University spends her spare time volunteering for Sobat Kolong, a charity dedicated to helping disadvantaged children. She talks to us about their cause.

What encouraged you to volunteer in the first place? I love children. It breaks my heart every time I see kids on the street living in poor and unhealthy conditions. I thought volunteering would be a good way to help these children gain a better life. What do Sobat Kolong activities include? Mainly, we teach the children basics, like reading and writing, and a few other subjects like math, English and arts and crafts.

Are there any unexpected things you’ve learned since volunteering? I think I have been most surprised by how much potential these kids have. In the beginning, I thought they would be mischievous and impudent, but as soon as I met them and got to know them I learned that is the farthest from what they are; the kids are all lovely and very creative. You teach in poor conditions under the bridge, so how do you keep yourself groomed? Apart from essentials like my purse and mobile phone, I always have wet tissues and cold drinks on hand. It is difficult to find clean water to wash my hands, and since it is very humid during the day, wet tissues are extremely beneficial. How can people get in touch with your group to join the cause? You can find us gathered every Saturday at 10 a.m. under a bridge across from Seasons City mall.

After hearing loads of ads for this restaurant on the radio, I finally decided to check it out. The Chicken Story PIM branch is a popular hang-out for teenagers in South Jakarta. The restaurant is going for a traditional, woodsy vibe, which they achieved by hanging traditional knick-knacks all over the place – all very tastefully done. I was really surprised by the food here: the chicken is very tasty and the sauce is delicious! The grilled chicken is seasoned so well that the flavors seep into the meat. The aroma of the dish served to the person at the next table was so good, I almost ordered a second plate.

If you have health problems, it is best to stock up on all your necessary medication before you leave on your trip. It’s also a good idea to get any recommended immunizations.

Remember, you will spend a lot of time on the road carrying your bag, so it’s best to pack essentials only. Keep your baggage to a minimum for maximum mobility; clothing, footwear, medical supplies and a sleeping bag should be enough.

Industrial engineering student at Beuth Hochschule für Technik Berlin, Germany For me, the best thing about traveling is the preparation for the actual trip, especially when backpacking. It gives me great satisfaction when I can find cheap flights and hostels that do not compromise on quality. But remember, plans often change when on the road, so be flexible!

Don’t… Trust strangers It’s nice to see a friendly face on the road but beware: fellow backpackers can steal your belongings and the locals can trick you into a scam. Of course, it’s important to be nice, but also listen to your instincts and don’t get attached to people you have just met.

p o P o r t c e l E Goddess Ellie

TWO YEARS AFTER THE SUCCESS OF HER SECOND ALBUM HALCYON, ELLIE GOULDING IS BACK WITH NEW MATERIAL AND NEW SURPRISES.

50

S

ince her debut in 2010, Ellie Goulding has enjoyed plenty of commercial success in the UK and around the world. The Brit’s distinctive sound of folk and electronic, combined with her airy voice and gorgeous looks, has made her a favorite among music lovers and celebrities (celeb fan Taylor Swift even invited her to one of her LA gigs as a surprise guest). When she isn’t performing at high-profile events like Lollapalooza and the Firefly Music Festival, Ellie is turning out collaborative hits with big names, such as Jessie J and Skrillex (whom she briefly dated). So what does the quirky songstress have in store for us next? Bigger and Better In late August, a repackaged version of her sophomore album Halcyon was released. The album, titled Halcyon Days, features old tracks from the previous record with an additional 10 new songs and is poised to be another hit-maker. “It’s a little happier than everything I’ve done before,” Ellie told radio.com about the refurbished album. “It’s kind of more uplifting songs. It embraces my love of electronic music a bit more.” The first single, “Burn”, went headto-head with Lady Gaga’s highly anticipated “Applause” – released the same week – and still came out no. 1 on the UK music charts, a first for the 26-year-old Brit. What made the milestone even more memorable? The Official Number One Award was presented by fellow Brit and gal pal Rita

Ora after her performance at the V Festival in August. The Love Game Despite being an international celebrity, Ellie has been able to keep her love life pretty low key. Of course, that has not stopped the public from engaging in guessing games. After Ellie broke up with English

actor Jeremy Irvine, rumors spread that she was dating Niall Horan of One Direction, following media reports that the two shared a kiss at the V Festival after-party. Ellie’s lips are sealed about the affair (if there is any), but Niall’s open admiration for the singer has only added fuel to the fire. After

describing Ellie to GQ as “absolutely amazing looking”, Niall took to Twitter to help promote her new single. Could this be a case of fangirling on Niall’s side? We’re not sure. But before things could die down, photos of Ellie getting friendly with Ed Sheeran at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards sparked a new romance rumor and sent the Twittersphere crazy. Ellie tweeted a sarcastic response to all the gossip: “I love that holding hands with my friends means we’re an item.” On the Road Whether these romance rumors are true, it looks like Ellie will be too busy for love anyway. Right off the success of her summer anthem with DJ Calvin Harris “I Need Your Love”, Ellie was chosen as one of the opening acts for Bruno Mars’ Moonshine Jungle Tour. Unlike her rumored love interests, Ellie could not contain her feelings for the “Grenade” crooner: “He is truly one of the greatest entertainers in the world.” Ellie is making waves of her own on a headlining tour of the UK, which will close in London in March. +Lia Levina 51

Although Tobey did not get the gig (Leo did), the two have remained close. They first costarred in the 2001 drama Don’s Plum and were reunited again this year in The Great Gatsby. During an interview with The Huffington Post, Leo shared just how close they really are: “Every single [role] choice I’ve made, I’ve talked to Tobey about, and vice versa.” We love how these pals have maintained their friendship despite the intense competitiveness of Hollywood. Josh Hutcherson and Sam Claflin This bromance may be the newest on our list (Josh and Sam only met while making Catching Fire, the sequel to The Hunger Games), but these two buddies are already practically joined at the hip. The boys get along so well, even Katniss is getting jealous! “They are totally in love. Their friendship is really bromantic and adorable,” costar Jennifer Lawrence revealed to MTV. We’re guessing their shared passion for soccer might have sparked this friendship. Bromance Level:

Dylan and Tyler have a lot in common. Not only do the hotties share screen time on Teen Wolf, but these 22-year-olds are both outgoing and love to have a good time. They met during the hit show’s screen test two years back and instantly clicked. “We were instant buds … I mean, we barely knew each other but we were already exchanging numbers and making plans to hang out,” Dylan revealed to Collider. And these boys are not shy about revealing their mutual adoration; they’re often seen on set goofing about and complimenting each other. Tyler even confessed during a Thanksgiving interview that he was “thankful for my buddy Dylan”. Aww, too cute! Bromance Level:

It’s a good thing that these two get along better than their screen alter egos, or we would never have been able to witness their playful friendship off-screen. The American and Brit are best known as rivals caught in a love triangle with Saoirse Ronan’s character in The Host. Their performance in the movie adaptation is undoubtedly above par, but their real-life chemistry is second to none. Don’t believe us? Growing up on the road together must have really strengthened the bond between One Direction lads Harry and Louis a little bit more than the others. The two Directioners met at a concert in 2008, but it was not until their encounter during auditions for The X Factor that the two boys grew close. Louis even shared a space in Harry’s apartment until he finally got a place of his own last year. Their adorable antics on and off stage (all that hugging and pranking!) just make us love them even more. No wonder the fans have come up with a moniker for the duo: Larry d Harry Styles Stylinson. hat makes someone beautiful? That question has been the center of the beauty debate for as long as we can remember. And more often than not, beauty pageants are usually caught in the thick of it. The most recent pageant controversy came after photos of the 21 finalists of this year’s Miss Korea were posted on Reddit. Netizens were quick to point out how most of the contestants looked alike, prompting suspicion that most of them had undergone plastic surgery. Although these accusations have yet to be proved, this would not be the first time a Korean pageant competitor has gone under the knife. Winner of Miss Korea 2012 Kim Yu-mi opened up about her surgery after the beauty queen’s old yearbook photos were circulated

online. The photos show then-high school student Kim with remarkably different facial features, most notably her eyes and cheekbones. Secret to Success No matter how we spin it, there is no denying the growing trend for plastic surgery in South Korea. The country has the highest per capita rate of plastic surgery worldwide, and the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons reports that one out of five South

Solbi Solbi is the poster child for the deeprooted issues underlying the plastic surgery craze. The public was taken aback when she revealed that she had decided to get work done because of depression. “I thought that plastic surgery would change my life,” she said during an interview. “But I was wrong.”

Korean women have had some form of plastic surgery – including adolescents. Many school girls – and boys – have embraced the trend. These days, instead of asking for a car for their graduation, teenagers are looking to get their face done. Common plastic surgery operations such as a nose job or double eyelid surgery have led to more extreme procedures, such as double-jaw surgery to achieve a finer jaw line. The bone-cutting

procedure is usually done for medical purposes on patients with chewing problems caused by jaw defects. Everything Plastic So how did this beauty craze get so out of hand? Many believe the Korean Wave in entertainment is a major factor in the plastic surgery boom. It is not uncommon for patients to undergo surgery to look more like an idol. And whose face is requested the most often for imitation? Apparently, it’s actress

Kim Tae-Hee. Others attribute the trend to Korean culture and attitudes. “Investment is the key word people use,” Sharon Hejiin Lee, an associate professor in the Department of Social and Cultural Analysis at New York University, told The Atlantic. “Forget about procedures, it’s about investment in their futures, whether it’s about

getting a better job or a better husband, people are thinking about this in economic terms.” When it comes down to it, the real issue in South Korea is more than skin deep. It is only natural for anyone to want to update their looks. So when does a makeover cross the line from being casual to concerning? Porcelain skin and flawless features may be nice to look at, but how much are they worth without a sense of self and appreciation for the attributes behind the mask?

Soyeon Although this Korean star has never publicly admitted to having had work done, before-and-after photos of the singer indicate otherwise. Her management issued a statement claiming that Soyeon had only had minor work done, but nobody seems to buy it.

arlier this year, parents and students across the country were caught by surprise when the Education and Culture Ministry decided to set 20 batches of questions for the National 56

Exams – four times as many as last year. The government introduced the new policy in response to the increase in incidents where corrupt officials sold leaked exam keys to

students, a trend that sparked public criticism of Indonesia’s education system and the government. However, the new approach has created new problems: it places extra pressure on students to perform

academically. For some students trying to cope with all that stress, it can even become dangerous. Seventeen-year-old Fanny Wijaya made headlines in May when she hanged herself because she was afraid that she would fail her exams – and she is not the only student who has been driven to extremes. Back in 2010, Wahyu Ningsih, a 19-year-old accomplished student from Jambi, took her own life when she found out that she had failed the National Exam.

The Ugly Truth The growth in the number of teenage suicides in Indonesia is cause for great concern. The National Commission for Child Protection (Komnas Anak) reported that there were 20 teenage suicides in the first half of last year, with more than one said to be due to academic stress. Even more alarming is that this number only represents those who saw the act through. According to the World Health Organization, for every suicide committed, there are at least 20 suicide attempts. Research shows that teenagers who are exposed to others’ suicide attempts are more likely to exhibit suicidal behavior – so students who have to deal with a classmate’s suicide are more prone to selfharming behavior. It’s a vicious cycle.

Pressure to be Perfect The teen suicide rate in Asia is particularly worrying. South Korea, China, Japan and India top the world’s list of teenage suicides. Many attribute this to the heavier emphasis on academic achievements in Asian

households compared with other cultures. With rigorous education systems and parents putting excessive pressure on their kids to succeed, students may grow up in an unhealthy environment where they come to believe that they must achieve perfect grades to earn their parents’ respect. Add the prevailing stigma attached to mental illness, and you have a recipe for disaster. Students become emotionally exhausted and physically drained and can sink into a deep abyss of depression, spending days entertaining suicidal thoughts. If you are a student and studies are stressing you out and leading to despair, here are a few quick fixes to keep your spirits up: 1. Set up a schedule. It is so easy to forget about your health when you are stressed about exams, but you are not going to do your best if you are sick. Make a schedule to study, sleep and eat – and stick to it.

2. Make some “me” time. Failing to meet your basic needs, like getting enough sleep and food, can create havoc with your moods and disrupt your ability to process information. Be sure to take a break every now and then. Take time out for a quick nap, a movie, an online game – anything to unwind. 3. Adjust your goals. Some people are born with the skill to juggle five things at once and come out victorious – you might not be so lucky. But that is okay! Everyone runs at their own pace; just know your limits and do what works for you. 4. Be mindful of your mind. Having a negative, tunnel-vision perspective on life can be disastrous. You can get stressed easily and will not be able to bounce back from failures quickly. It’s good to make sure goals are met, but also take in the bigger picture of your plans and try to stay positive.

Warning! A few indications of someone who is thinking of taking their own life: · Excessive alcohol or drug use · Irrational thinking · Depressed or moody · Anti-social behavior · Talking or thinking about dying If you or anyone you know is experiencing these symptoms, ask an adult for help.

f you ask your friends about the kind of music they listen to, it is unlikely that any of them will put traditional music at the top of the list. But that’s not unusual: the reality is that few members of our generation know much about the past. Musical community D’Chambers Music wants to change that. The group, founded and directed by Diah Ekawati, a lecturer at the University of Indonesia, aims to revive traditional sounds and introduce them to young adults. “Many youngsters do not realize that traditional music is good; it 58

translates into a rich history – from the Portuguese, Dutch, Arabic, Indian and even the Chinese,” Diah explains. The group consists of a choir of 20, a pianist and several dancers who perform in traditional outfits – and most of these young people are keen to teach their peers how to appreciate traditional music. The group rehearses at least once a week and has traveled to other cities, including Denpasar, Yogyakarta and Semarang, to perform their distinctive renditions of traditional tunes. Their modern arrangements of songs such as “Bengawan Solo” and “Dayung Sampan” breathe new life into the melodies to create enchanting, fresh compositions. “Indonesia’s traditional music

has a thick Malay underlayer,” Diah points out. “But if you listen carefully, bits and pieces of European techniques can be heard hidden between the notes. It is very beautiful.” So the next time you hear the sounds of gamelan and angklung, don’t just turn on your MP3 player for the chart-toppers – why not sit back and take a journey to the nation’s musical past? +Tuscany Leau

What to do

1 First, make the base for the shank button. Smooth out the piece of fabric with the outer side facing down. Fold in each end by 0.5 cm and glue them down. Then fold the fabric in half lengthwise.

4 Now that you have the base for your ring, the next step is to sew the shank button on to the middle of the base. Take the time to stitch the shank button on properly and securely – if you don’t, your ring could unravel.

2 Stitch the sides of the folded fabric together, along the top edge. Be sure to leave a 1 cm gap between stitches.

5

3 Once you’ve stitched along the whole length of the fabric, gently pull the end of the thread until a slight tug between the fabric and thread causes the fabric to curve into a flower-like circle. Adjust the fabric into a perfect circle. Where the two ends meet to close the circle, stitch them together and then knot the end of the thread several times.

When the shank button is securely in place, use the glue gun to stick the fabric and the ring shank together. Press against the shank to make sure it bonds firmly with the fabric. Then leave it to dry.

Doing Lia Levina chats with Hamzah Izzulhaq about the youngster’s financial endeavors and plans.

W

hile most 20-yearolds are still struggling to decide whether to take biology or chemistry, Hamzah Izzulhaq has his future mapped out – perhaps only to be expected given the total net worth of his business ventures have already put him on the list of Indonesia’s top young entrepreneurs. CV Hamasa Indonesia, the holding company Hamzah built from scratch, oversees four licensed ventures he owns and makes more money than many people twice his age could ever do. And even though we’re talking about his extraordinary financial success and business plans, Hamzah looks like an ordinary guy. Which, despite his businesses’ monthly turnover of more than Rp 300 million, he insists he is. 64

The Business Bug Hamzah had never planned such success, he says. But his knack for sales revealed itself when he was little. “I got into a lot of trouble in elementary school. I would sell firecrackers to my friends, then they would set the crackers off on school grounds, which did not go down well with the principal. But I didn’t care; all I knew was I was getting a 7,000-rupiah profit for each cracker sold,” Hamzah jokes. He took this “strictly business” attitude into high school, where his interest in commerce only grew. He continued to sell things, such as mobile phone vouchers, text books and snacks. He started to expand by diving into motivational books about successful entrepreneurs and he joined the Community of Motivators and Entrepreneurs to cultivate his money-making talents. As somebody who is the same age as Hamzah, I can only imagine what that kind of success so young can do to the ego. But during our

interview, not once did the selfmade millionaire reveal even a hint of condescension or arrogance. Growing up with friends who were not as well-off as he had taught him humility, he says. “I come from a pretty well-off family, but many of my friends were not as fortunate. It didn’t matter to me what their background was, though. Often I would even join them at the traffic lights to sell newspapers and sing for money,” Hamzah admits. A Little Guidance After a string of odd jobs selling stuff here and there, Hamzah was introduced to Ari Poniyati, one of the founders of the tutoring institute Bintang Solusi Mandiri. Sensing Hamzah’s potential, Ari took the budding entrepreneur under his wing and offered him a head position at one of the tutoring branches. With only Rp 5 million in his savings and little experience, Hamzah accepted the offer. He

sought a loan from his parents and negotiated a deal with Ari to cover his shortfall in capital. Hamzah’s journey to success was harder than it sounds. The unexperienced high school student had no clue how to run a business and faced a lot of challenges in the beginning: “I was in charge yet I did not understand how to lead a business meeting, how to calculate profits or whether the system was running efficiently. But that was the consequence of the responsibility I had taken on. I learned the ropes on my own and finally got the hang of things.” So what is the key to his success? “These days, it seems like everyone wants to be a successful entrepreneur, but only a handful of them actually do the work,” Hamzah says. “If you want something, don’t just sit around wishing for it, take action!”

Hamzah Uncut Some interesting facts about the budding businessman: Do you still recall your first big splurge? I do! I took all my friends out and treated them at a nice restaurant. Do you play any sports? Yes, I play soccer and badminton. What is your guilty pleasure? To be honest, I think I spend too much time online. When I’m busy tweeting I often lose track of time. The perfect date would be … Strolling along the beach or enjoying the perfect view from a mountain top. Any celebrity crushes? I like Kartika Putri [the presenter/ model]. I think she’s very attractive. 65

University Life

D

erry Rosdiana Yulistya is a 20-year-old graduate from the Bandung Health Polytechnic (Politeknik Kesehatan Bandung). In July, she joined the ranks of countless other fresh graduates, leaving campus behind and stepping into the real world for the first time. “When I graduated, I was really happy and relieved to see three years of my life finally pay off!” she says. For many new college graduates, entering the workforce is an exciting time. After all, this is what they have spent years studying for. But in an increasingly competitive job market, finding employment may be harder than expected. Reisya Kharisma, now a customer service and marketing representative at Bank Artha Graha, reveals that securing her first job was tough. “When I graduated in 2011, I must have sent out applications to more than 10 companies; only three called back,” she says. “Trying to find a job was very exhausting. I had to take all sorts of tests and interviews, including physical and psychological examinations. The process was incredibly lengthy and involved multiple stages. Not to mention having to wait weeks before the results are announced.” And if you think your peers studying overseas have it made, well, it is no picnic over there either. “I started job searching fervently

before I even graduated, and I must have applied for more than 100 jobs, most of which I never heard back from,” says Shari Stelzer, who graduated from a US university with a degree in environmental engineering. “It’s very hard to deal with so much rejection.” Entering adulthood can be a shock for many. As we grow up, we are forced to deal with our own real-life problems. Sure, we have our family and friends to help us cope with it all. But the reality is that we are responsible for our future and we need to take control of our own life. If you are gearing up for your last semester of college, here are some essential steps to take leading up to your graduation and departure into the world.

1. Get an internship Given the intense competition in the workforce, you need all the advantage you can get – experience will give you that. It is mandatory at most universities for students to undertake an internship to

graduate, but for those of you who are not obliged to do so, I highly recommend you do it anyway. Not only will it give you a sneak peek into your chosen career, but also any references you obtain will show potential employers that you are ready to work.

2. Network, network and network I know it is hard enough to juggle all those college assignments without having extracurricular activities to worry about, but the friends you make in college will someday be people you may want to know. Having a pool of connections will also help you track down vacancies through friends when you are looking for a job.

3. Brush up on your English In today’s global environment, being fluent in English is vital, especially if you aim to work at an international company. Learning another language in addition to English, such as Chinese or Spanish, will give you an extra edge.

n a world where we remain dependent on our trusty electronics, it is worrying to think what would happen if there were no energy source to power them all. Natural resources are finite, so if we keep using them at our current rate, they will run out; this is where renewable energy comes in. The 2013 Green Competition, held by Biogas Rumah or BIRU, aims to encourage young Indonesians to express their thoughts and concerns about energy conservation and to raise awareness of the importance of using renewable resources. After going through more than 200 submissions from participants aged between 15 and 24 years competing in three categories – Feature Writing, Photo Story and Campaign-Kit Design – the committee revealed the winners on August 26 at an award ceremony in Tebet.

“It is important for youth to know that in the future they will be the ones to take care of our environment,” Robert de Groot, Program Manager of Indonesia Domestic Biogas, said in his opening speech. This was followed by a panel discussion titled “Youth Voice in Renewable Energy: Act Now, It is Your Future”, with the four panelists including 2013 Ashoka Young Change-maker Adjie Wicaksana and Speak!’s very own Anggi Nurqonita, as the 10th Eco-generation Regional Ambassador to Indonesia UNEPTUNZA. “To be such a change maker is both hard and easy,” Anggi, who actively works to raise awareness about environmental issues, said during the discussion. “It’s difficult because you have to stand out from the crowd. But if you are already proactive or have the initiative to make a difference, everything will be a lot easier.” Adjie, who founded the Research and Community Development Center, talked about the community’s work building selfsustaining villages in rural areas. Throughout the panel discussion,

it was made clear that Indonesia’s incredible resources for renewable energy must be preserved, and it is our responsibility as the country’s future to make sure they are. Following the discussion, it was time to give out the awards, to the following winners. + Karen Priyanka and Lia Levina

Helpful Hints

Want to help save the Earth but not sure where to start? Here is some advice from our young panelists. “There are many things young people can do to help the environment. You don’t need to go overboard with grand schemes to save the world; start small. Turn off the lights when you’re not using them, or recycle your plastic bags and bottles. It may not seem like much, but think of it this way: if more than one person does these simple gestures everyday, imagine what an impact we will have on the environment together.” Anggi, 17, 2013 Speaker, 10th Ecogeneration Regional Ambassador to Indonesia UNEP-TUNZA

“I think the best way to encourage youth with the ability and desire to make a difference is to have them read more. You gain so much knowledge and insight through reading. It is also important to get connected with like-minded people and join a community. Discover an issue you are passionate about, gather people with the same vision and make some changes.” Adjie, 24, founder and director of the Research and Community Development Center, 2013 Ashoka Young Change-makers 69

Binus International School Simprug Independence Day Celebration

“The last few Independence Days fell during Ramadhan fasting month, so we couldn’t have any games. But this year is different! And it’s been so much fun to get together with my classmates to cheer on other students and teachers involved in the games.” Carissa, 14, Grade 10

Binus International students gathered at the school’s gymnasium to celebrate Indonesia’s Independence Day by holding several competitions, including classic Aug. 17 games such as tug-of-war and gunny races between younger and upper-classmen. Andika Wiranata is a 20-year-old Indonesian studentat Swiss-German University. Andika shares his experiences doing a six-month mandatory internship in Germany.

Why did you decide to go into hotel and tourism management? I think there are plenty of job opportunities in the [hotel and tourism] industry compared with other fields. Another aspect that interested me was the interaction 74

with people from different places and backgrounds, which makes it an exciting field. Can you tell us a bit about your internship in Germany? Students must do two internships: one in Jakarta and one abroad. I chose Germany and was accepted at the Rugard Strandhotel. The hotel is on Rugen, the country’s biggest island. I worked in the hotel’s F&B department and gained first-hand experience in food service. Getting paid for the internship was a bonus. [laughs] Did you attend any classes while you were there? Yes, I spent the first month sitting in on lectures at a German university, which was really

great. The professors were very knowledgeable, but strict on attendance. If you’re late, don’t expect them to let you into class. Was it hard to adjust to life there? Not really, but the weather was an extreme change for me; to make matters worse, I arrived during winter so you can imagine how cold it was. I got used to it, though. The locals were nice and, most importantly, there was no traffic! And how did you let off steam during the weekends? Well, I spent most weekends at work but on my days off I would go to the beach and play volleyball, or visit neighboring cities to do some sightseeing. + Lia Levina
