Personal Project

LIFESTYLE FOOTWEAR Footwear design is my passion. I spend most of my free time designing lifestyle footwear. To fulfill my need for creating my footwear, I bought several lasts and materials and crate custom shoes as I am inspired. I like to focus on material, construction methods and functionality.

Sketching I wanted to limit myself with regards to tools. I felt this would help drive the creativity of the design because I would be pushed to think of the posibillities of each insturment.

Handcrafted Leather Goods What I have seen trending is handcrafted leather good from vegtable tanned leather. I wanted to apply this technique to a minimal running shoe.

Contraints I wanted to limit myself with regards to tools. I felt this would help drive the creativity of the design because I would be pushed to think of the posibillities of each insturment.

Made by Hand You really appreciate quality construction after cutting patterns out of think leather and punching hundreds of holes. Molding and lasting the leather is also a laborious task

Functionality The vegtable tanned leather is thick and would cut all air flow. I used perforated panels to accomodate airflow and allow the foot to comfortable and dry.

Personal Project

2-Day Shoe Design I have recently been working on deconstructing a shoe and applying a new upper. The upper is based on styles I have noticed to be trending. However, I wanted to use the materials and handcraft style appropriately for footwear. I feel that exploring trends and style can produce innovative and inspiring designs. My design process will be shown as well as my final design.

Drawing Inspiration To get inspiration I started with details I already liked about footwear on the market. I also wanted to take elements of simplicity from art and modern scuplture.

Simple Geometry Over two days I spent time applying the idea of simple geometry to the shoe. I felt the guidelines were broad enough to be creative, yet tight enough to develop an aesthetic.

Dialing In Once I was happy with several designs I took them into illustrator and started dialing in the linework. Each rough sketch took 15 minutes.

Sprout Kids Furniture

Redesigning the Line My sophomore I landed an interndhip working for Sprout Kids Funriture. It was my first internship, I did not have many expectations. After several weaks the owner, approached me wanting to upgrade his aesthetic to match the regions where the furniture was being sold. It was a duanting task, but the results speak for themselves.

The Original Table and Chairs The original table and chairs matched the company’s first name “Gypsy”. I wanted to update the furniture to resemble Sprout and their new values.

Inspiration

Simplify Making the line feel more modern was a matter of simplifying the linework. Straight lines and deliberate shapes updated the look. It also easily allowed application through the line.

Modeling Once designs were decided on, I need to find the right deminsions that would look proportionally correct and function well for kids.

Cardboard and Full Prototyping After coming up with the appropriate dimensions and applying through Solidworks, we decided to make full size prototypes out of cardboard. Once we agreed on the life size models, we made the pieces out of MDF.

Results Upon releasing the new line of furniture, sales have increased dramatically. Sprout finished quater 3 2015 averaging $10,000 weekly and experienced a record high $14,000 going into quater 4.

Miche Fashion Company

Accessories Design I spent 18 months as an Accessories designer for Miche Fashion company. I have a passion for soft goods. In most cases, I was designing specifically for women. Understanding their needs was my task with every design. The first two bags are my favorite. Each bag has a small story for it’s purpose, whether that is function or trend.

SOLD OUT This bag was the fourth bag I sent out as an intern. I never believed that one of my first bags would sell out within the first two weeks - 1600 bags total.

Design Inside and Out What I have seen trending is handcrafted leather good from vegtable tanned leather. I wanted to apply this technique to a minimal running shoe.

Elegant Details I try to touch every piece of the bag. I feel small details show customers that every inch of the product was under consideration.

For Today’s Kid Books are a thing of the past and every kid carries a phone. I made this bag thinner to match the times and keep the bag light on kid’s shoulders. The bag is finished with gender nuetral colors and striped interior.

Sold Out This nuetral colored bag sold out of its inventory in two weeks. With a small customer base, this bag achieved what only four bags achieved in the company’s history.

Same Dimensions Different Bag When I got to Miche, I learned that each bag needed to fit the same template. I also learned I could manipulate that template in a myriad of ways.

Process When designing bags for Miche, I started with trend reasearcha dn analysis. I moved from there tp sketching and rendering. Finally, I made detailed tech packs for the overseas factories. In the process of making the tech pack I also sourced materials.

Prints and Materials Separare from designing bags I had to design several prints per release. The following pages show the prints I developed and how they were manufactured for the bags. At the end of this section are two backpacks that used to experiement on materials and construction that Miche hadn’t done before.

Dainty Floral This bag is one of my favorites in terms design of proportion and color. The materials and print work together to make this bag unique and appealing to its target age range of 16-19.

Real Flower Print This print used photographs of real flowers and their roots. The tech pack called for up to 15 colors to create. The print is fully repeating making each bag unique.

Experimenting For these bags, I sourced several interesting weaves and wanted to apply them. I shot the bags with girls who I think fit the trend I was aiming for. A girl who is more into fashion and a girl who is into a more heritage style.
