JACOB BRAGHINI INDUSTRIAL DESIGN PORTFOLIO

DESIGN IS LIFE My name is Jake, design is who I am. I hope through my portfolio, my love for design shows. My hope is that my portfolio shows my ability to thrive in any design situation and my desire is to create meaningful and carefully considered products. I like to push myself. I want to challenge the way things are. My favorite part of design is collaborating and arriving at a solution that feels right. I have found that in every company I work for, I have been able to offer something to progress the products for good. When I’m not designing, I’m playing basketball. When I’m not playing basketball, I’m eating good food. When I’m not doing either, I’m most likely sleeping. My favorite color is blue. Currently, I design exhibits for Storhaus in Provo, Utah and fashion accessories for Miche LLC in South Jordan, Utah, but I am looking to get my first big start.

SENIOR PROJECT

Handmade shoes. I spent 5-6 months trying to learn a craft. I wanted this project to push me. To this point in the design program I hadn’t made anything that felt like a real product. I wanted to achieve this.

Senior Project

Hand Made Shoes When deciding on a senior project, I wanted to pick something that took me out of my comfort zone and I wanted something that would force me to make things because having something is more impressive than drawing something. I also love shoes and what finally weighed in on my decision was watching a video in an anthropology class. A Peruvian man, in a small poor town, was making shoes by hand and was doing well for himself. I had a dream to make shoes, if he was doing it, why not me?

TAPE PATTERNS About the only thing I knew about shoes was that I needed something called a last and I needed to use tape to make the patterns.

CLOTH PROTOTYPES I had a bunch of spare cotton/ poly cloth to make my first prototypes. This tested my patternes and my abilities to sew.

LEATHER, I HARDLY KNOW HER Starting into leather was a duanting task as I had never worked with leather in my life, nor did I know the right leather to work with. And who knew you had to mold it?

GETTING BETTER, WELTS. It’s interesting to see the progression when I look back. Some things took months to develop because I had to teach myself and get over the fear of doing something.

GET SMARTER, WITH LASERS. I created my own welt pattern. I felt doing this would keep the sole of the shoe straight and elimante some of the guess work of welting.

THE FINAL STRETCH Though my skills, weren’t as polished as I would like, the time was up and I had to present what I had learned.

Senior Show What I worked 7 months for a chance to show my work to the public. I presented my designs as if I set up my own custom shoe shop.

What there is to learn.

ICEBURG! I’ll be the first to admit that I still have a lot to learn about footwear and footwear production. This shoe I did a day before the senior show. I never finished it, but I was proud of the pull I did of the upper. It was the was the end of what I considered a successful project.

Intership 2012-13

KIDS FURNITURE My first internship. I came into the intership not knowing what was going to happen. I was a sophomore. However, what I experienced was beyond normal. I was able to redesign the entire line of kids furniture to that point and drive a new aesthetic for the brand.

A NEW AESTHETIC The profile view of the furniture was everything. I focused on trying to simply the look and make a language to follow.

DIALING IN Once we decided on a direction we took it into Solidworks and worked to make sure it was exactly what we wanted, down to the last radius.

PROTOTYPING AND PRODUCTION

Intership 2013

SHOE CONSULTANCY This internship taught me skills vital for the footwear industry, that’s what will be shown here. Before interning at Modaliti I only had a love for shoes into a passion for designing them and the intrigue of the design problems they present.

ARMY BOOT UPPERS I learned some dated methods of ideation that helped to SHOW TEXTURE AND MATERIAL CHANGE.

BRAND IDENTITY I was referred to VolleyMetrics by a friend. She recognized my love for sports and for building teams and connected me with VolleyMetrics. Growing quickly in their market, they were struggling with an identity and needed someone to help them establish themselves graphically amongst their competitors. VolleyMetrics records volleyball games. After the game, they give detailed play-by-play analytics and video breakdown back to coaches and players.

THE ORIGINAL LOGO What does this logo say to people looking into this company? To me it looked like a 1998 dial-up internet company. It was time to bring them into 2014.

A LOGO TO MATCH THE MAN, THE SILVER MEDALIST. Guiseppe Vinci, isn’t just another guy. He is a painted athletetic Coach. He was part of the staff that brought USA women a silver medal.

BALL PATH

The natural bounce of a ball only seemed right. when deciding the logo. This way, the logo could be used across all sports.

Personal Project

LET’S BE HONEST On going project on honesty. The word honesty intrigued me in school. The word honesty can mean and be so many different things. This project shows one way I chose to represent it. The contents were featured in Salt Lake Desing Week.

“HONESTY IS THE FIRST CHAPTER IN THE BOOK OF WISDOM.” -Thomas Jefferson

DISHONESTY At the grocery store I saw this box and looked at it carefully. I wondered why the box was styled as it was. Clearly the box was dishonest as to the appearance of the product. This prompted the thought HOW WOULD I DESIGN OTHER FOOD PRODUCTS BEING COMPLETELY HONEST? PROVIDE ACTUAL IMAGES OF FOOD, DIMENSIONS AND AMOUNT OF CONTENTS.
