Hello! My first memory of anything to do with art was the constant doodling of Power Rangers battling monsters on the backs of my kindergarten assignment sheets. I probably should of been more focused on the task at hand, but I take it as a good sign to when my knack for creating and love for fantasy began. I learned to rely on my pens and pencils as I grew up to convey what could not be in the real world and still do to this day. With a fine art background, I express my creativity through drawing. It manages to find its place in everything I do, especially in graphic design. My work has a focus on using illustrations and carefully chosen typography to compliment each other to make design that is both expressive and playful. The subject matter of my work aligns with the fantastic due my personal perspective on art. It is merely a nod to reality and does not have to correspond to the confines of it, so why should I? Things that are not seen in the ordinary fuel me to create a place for them in the real world through design and illustration. This portfolio chronicles that process and my lifelong interest with the imaginative.

Mash is fun and quirky restaurant that is centered around an equally fun and quirky vegetable, the infamous potato. This home-style restaurant centered specifically for families with young children ages 5-10, strives to put a potato in about everything it makes, which includes both its cuisine and branding. Illustrations of various foods are used as both patterns and accents to create a welcoming and friendly environment for the entire family. In designing for Mash, I illustrated a set of characters that were used throughout the restaurant collateral and served as the central design element. The different characters were incorporated into patterns that cover the interior walls and appear on the menus and drink cups. Buttons were also made that feature the characters to be used as give aways for kids to have. T-shirts are also available for purchase that incorporate the illustrations in unique ways. A color palette of brown and a bright redorange accentuates the fun atmosphere. The font Acknowledgment is used to give the branding a Midwest feel and is contrasted with various weights of Futura.

December Nights is a weekend event that occurs in Balboa Park during the holiday season. It is a huge celebration where all museums are free along with holiday performances and multiple vendor booths. I was tasked to design a double sided poster with a graphic in the front and an event infograph on the back. Combining what was unique about Balboa Park along with the spirit of the holidays was the challenge at hand. I decided for the front of the poster to illustrate what Balboa Park is known for, and that is its multiple museums and unique architecture. I developed a set of illustrations that depicted the various locales in Balboa Park with a classic holiday color palette of green, red, and gold. To further push the holiday aspect, I formed the illustrations into the shape of a Christmas Tree. An infograph was designed that also utilized the illustrations that gave event information along with a park map. Other collateral included a vendor badge and a hot drink cup. Special gift wrap was also made that used the illustrations in a pattern that would be sold on site.

Spectral Magazine is a publication for all things horrific in a more refined manner than the average paranormal magazine. When looking at other similar subject magazines, most were a bit kitschy. I wanted to design a magazine that would contain stories that could be every bit possible. The target for this magazine are paranormal aficionados ages 30-50 that are aware of truly horrific happenings. I used a limited color palette of grays, red, and dark green along with black and white photos for an eerie feel. The covers were hand drawn illustrations of human figures looking like they were escaping out of their confined spaces out into the real world. The fonts News Gothic and Aldine were used for their stern appearances to compliment the fearful tone.

Basic Graphic Design

Imaginate is a set of conceptually driven toys that is based on the act of using found objects for play instead of having to go to the store for purchase. The idea stems from my own childhood experiences where I would use random objects and transform them and myself to whatever I saw fit. When children are able to create their own worlds with what they find, their imagination is fueled and nurtured. I decided to create packaging for these various items that would show different scenes of how they could be transformed. The objects that are packaged include a cardboard tube, a wooden stick, and a tennis shoe string. To nurture the notion that these ordinary items can transport children to different worlds and go on epic adventures is illustrated directly on the packaging. Each toy has a different scene with a character utilizing the respective toy surrounded in a fantastic environment. A custom unicase and inline typeface I created called Wonkee was used to complement the playful illustrations. Each toy comes with a manual that shows different roles you can be with each specific toy. A mobile app game was made so children can play as the central characters from each toy as they travel to different worlds and let their imaginations run wild.

Arthur’s Chocolates are throwback in terms of style but with modern and creative flavor combinations. This brand of chocolate product target audience is upper class and higher end consumers. Unique flavors come together such as mint and coconut to attract attention from its demographic. The overall look of the brand uses stylistic elements from mid-century confections but is kept modern with its illustrations. The combination of the past and present makes Arthur’s stand out amongst other chocolates. This product line includes a brownie and hot chocolate mix along with a set of chocolate bars. To keep up with the retro appearance, I used repeating diamond and stripe patterns that were heavily used in the 1950’s. The typography choices of Sign Painter and Bree Serif were used to emulate the script and slab serifs that were utilized in candies and chocolates of the past. The color palette chosen was kept soft with light pastels for a sweet feeling. Brown was used as a neutral color in all of the products in addition to being a unifying factor. For a modern appearance, vector graphics were illustrated to represent the product flavors. The illustrations are made to stand out even further by having a gradient shading that contrasts with the flat colors and shapes of the rest of the packaging.

National Geographic publishers created this textbook series to reach fifth grade, ESL students working to grow their skills in language, literacy and content. The covers of these books differentiate themselves from competitors like McGraw-Hill and Kaplan through their use of whimsical illustrations and clever word clouds. The concept of exploration and the excitement of reaching a destination is conveyed through different forms of transportation. These include hot air balloons, scooters, sailboats, trams and rockets with trails of inventive text to tickle the imagination of the reader. To solve this design problem I created a set of playful images using strong graphic shapes focused on the forward momentum of each mode of transport. A vibrant palette of warm reds, tangy orange, zippy yellow with lively blue appeals to the 10-11 year old audience. I crafted words into concrete shapes using different scales of Neutraface and Sentinel to complement the masthead. Additional branded applications include a parallax website that folds out to engage both children and parents alike through a fun adventure.

ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE IN A NEW LANGUAGE The main benefit a person gains when committing to learn English or any language is the ability to communicate with the language itself and create connections with a wider range of the world’s overall population.

TWO THE BRAIN CHANGES IN ELECTRICAL ACTIVITY Before this study it was believed this change in brain functioning only occurred when students had obtained a high level of language ability in the new language, this study revealed this change may occur at the earliest stages of language learning.

THREE SUPERIOR MEMORY FUNCTION Language learning showed an increase in memory capacities, this was strong in short-term memory. This is a benefit because it allows the brain to keep information in the brain for longer durations while thinking processes are activated.

FOUR INCREASED PROBLEM-SOLVING A person benefits from language learning by gaining increased problem-solving in all of the following areas: abstract thinking skills, concept formation, strengthened capacity to identify, and the ability to focus on a task.

FIVE INCREASED ABILITY IN DIGITAL LITERACY The culmination of these advantages results in an increased ability in digital literacy. Because of these quickened mental abilities individuals which are multilingual have a noticeable ability to stay up to date with modern technologies.

Sora Airlines is an international airline based in Tokyo, Japan. “Sora is the Japanese word for sky and aims to provide customers reliable, fast, and affordable trips in and out of Japan. The theme of Sora Airlines is general Japanese culture that is based off prolific elements of the country that are used to familiarize travelers before even arriving. The target audience are travelers ranging from the ages of 20-40. Sora Airlines’ main message is about fun, cool, and affordable traveling that is highlighted with the modern branding system. Flat, geometric shapes, and a contrasting palette of warm and cool colors are used in its identity markers. The logo is a geometric paper crane as it represents flight while being a nod to the paper folding art of origami. Illustrations of a geishas, ninjas, and a cherry blossoms were created and used throughout the various airline pieces. The tickets depict scenes of night and day to differentiate between first and economy class to remove any sort of hierarchy. A mural covering up an entire airport wall was illustrated that depicts a calming Japanese country scene to attract customers to go and visit Japan. Passengers also receive a paper crane folding guide so that they can practice their folding skills during their downtime.

Portfolio Building

The Catcher in The Rye by J.D. Salinger has been one of my favorite novels since high school due to the main character, Holden Caulfield for his honest sentiments and constant introspection. I read Salinger’s other popular books, Franny and Zooey and Nine Stories and they too became favorites. All three books exhibit various forms of human turmoil, both from circumstance and of just simply existing. I wanted to pay homage to Salinger through my own craft of illustration by redesigning the covers of his novels. In order to adequately portray many layers of deep seated issues the characters in these novels possess, conceptual image seemed to be the best solution in tackling this assignment. I decided the best technique to portray the most meaning in the simplest way was to depict the climactic scenes from each novel. I chose Holden standing in the field of rye, Franny and Zooey in their respective resting spots, and the beach scene from A Perfect Day for Bananafish. In doing so, potential customers would be able to recognize them immediately because of their sense of familiarity with the particular scenes. I chose a restricted color palette where navy blue and gray were the predominant colors to fit the serious tones of each novel and with pops of yellow, red, and a lighter shade of blue where detail was needed. I used the font Telegrafico for its clean lines and angles that complimented the minimal imagery I was depicting.

Fantastical Features is a series of plays from The Old Globe Theatre in Balboa Park that run for the season. Big Fish, Elf, and Matilda were the plays I chose due to their whimsical natures. The theme and overall aesthetic revolved around magic shows which seemed fitting for the overall fantasy qualities that connects the plays together. The magic theme also directly appeals to children, who are the main targets for this play season. Our task was to create a mailing brochure that would attract potential customers to purchase season tickets. I designed the brochure to emulate a magic trick with its big reveal. I did so by illustrating the front to be a red curtain that folds out once to the season name and then folds out again to all of the five panels in one motion. The colors I chose were black and red as they are the usual colors of a magician’s uniform and added gold for some refinement and added contrast with the black. I used and modified the script font Savoye for the season logo and decorated it with multiple curls and sparkles for a glowing effect. Additional collateral that was created included play tickets and a paper doll spread that children would receive at each show. A set design for Big Fish was illustrated that the theatre crew could use for visual assistance when setting up.
